- 2016 Yamaha Super Tenere ES Motorcycle Review - This is one of the most comfortable bikes out there including cruisers. The upright seating position, wide bars, incredibly comfortable seat and generous leg position allows for long distance riding while the potent engine and customizable frame and add-ons give you endless use possibilities. The ES stands for Electronic Suspension, giving many different combinations of ride quality including traction control and ride modes to suit all conditions. The transmission is butter smooth and the clutch especially lends itself to ease of use with the lightest pull of any bike I have ridden.

I'm on my second Super Tenere. I had a 2013 basic model and a 2015 ES. I got rid of my Goldwing to buy a Super Tenere and as you wrote in the "intro" it allows for long distance riding . I've done 800 mile days with it at age 68. Now in my 70th year, I have added a set of highway pegs to the crash bars to be able to flex the knees a bit but I love it for continental cruising and motorcycle camping. Have twin panniers, a top case and with one rain proof bag strapped on behind me, I'm good for two weeks out. TCS and ABS. And FYI, I'm 5' 10 with 34" in seam. Wind screen comments are spot-on... Also, they should throw in a set of wind deflectors that basically lie parallel with the ground on either side of the fuel tank, close to the wind screen as the wind comes in from beneath without them. Fully loaded on the interstate for long days, set the cruise at 75 mph and just go.. I'd give it a 10 our of 10... IF, IF, IF it had self-canceling turn signals!! C'mon Yamaha!! So I'd call it a 9.468 our of 10.
Watched your review again, I think my next bike. I will trade "character" for no drama any day of the week. I think this bike is so underrated by professional reviewers that's it's unreal. Just because it's not 160hp. I mean I hardly see 75 mph in my travels. I think this bike will be perfect for me. My dimensions are nearly identical to yours. Besides the farkle support for this bike is immense.
very good in depth review like i’m reading a book with no pictures
Bryan thanks for this review. I just purchased this bike to replace my 2011 FJR. I found a great deal on a 2016 ES with only 220 miles. It has so many features and options at an affordable price point and is an ideal alternative to the FJR. Love the Electronic Suspension since I commute during the week and 2-up tour on the weekends. Transitioning is only a button press away. I only have a couple hundred miles on it so far, but I am very happy with this bike. It is a fun ride and I give you partial credit for making the move.
Additional credit: Thanks for all the honest reviews on various bikes and also for the excellent how-tos. I watched several of them prior to doing repairs and adjustments on the FJR.
Great review.
I just sold my 2014 Vstrom 1000 and bought a 2019 Yamaha Super Tenere ES.
My Vstrom was an amazing machine. The only reason I sold it was because I wanted cruise control, electronic suspension, LED lights, a larger tank (23L) and shaft drive.
I hope it ends up being as good as my Vstrom
Ride safe
Best Super Ten review I've seen. Concise, factual, and insightful. Much appreciated.
Fantastic review. I like the way you conduct your reviews. Thorough yet not overly so. Well done
I like your reviews. Impressed that you can give an on the fly review, and still ride safely.
Bryan-this, as well as your other reviews have been a valuable source for me. I realize you posted this a while ago, however I wanted you to know you were very instrumental in helping me finalize my decision to invest in a new Yamaha Super Tenere ES this past August. Thank you and I’m looking forward to you continuing to share reviews with all of us!
+Stephen Romano cool! Good choice!
Bryan, thanks for the review. I am trading in my 2014 FJR1300ES for the 2016 Super Tenere ES this week. I love the FJR, just too bent over for my taste. The ST10 seems to have that upright position and all of the controls that I am used to on the FJR. Great trade in value for the FJR. No regrets. The FJR is just one fantastic bike for the price.
+Shawn Kuse You will love it if that's what you need for sure! Super comfy!
How do you like the ST10 so far? Thank you
I have both an FJR and a Super Tenere and much prefer the Super Tenere for its much greater comfort, ability to tackle a variety of terrain, and for being a very interesting bike to ride at any speed
This will be my next bike to add to my collection !! That I can ride to and from work and in the rain !!
Finally answers for my questions ! Thanks, man!
I ride a 2016 s 10. Your review is spot on!
Excellent review, you just gained a new subscriber. Picking up my 2021 this weekend.
Love the look of this Super tenere
I want an S10. And I bet a lot of those vibes you were feeling was from it being a brand new bike. Still not broken in.
The stock seat is anything but comfy. After 110 miles I have a seriously sore butt. I bought a custom seat to solve that problem and the stock windshield provides little protection. Apart from that, the bike is awesome. It is a great handling bike, the engine is a gem with tons of torque and top end. The shaft drive is a bonus if one is planning on long trips with no need to clean and lube chains. It is also cost effective at maintaining. I had a RT before and it costs about half that to maintain.
good commentary like i’m listening to a basketball game on the radio 😂 i dont have to watch the video
this will most likely be my next bike. thanks for the review!
Great review!! I just bought the 2016 SE black just like in your video and did 500Km on it so far! coming from a GS800 that I did 100.000Km in a few years it was a great improvement!
You need to do this review stuff full time and for a living...excellent review!
Affordability, reliability, versatility, capability, and style= the Super Tenere. There is nothing else out there that ticks all those boxes or looks as good.
Best bang for your buck in the large adventure bike segment.👍👍
I have a 2012 Tenere, wish I had some of the features the new ones have along with the gear change. But I like my tach & speedo more.
Well done. You covered everything needed. Cool. You got my like. ..:)
Thanks for highlighting the light clutch. 2-0 to the FJR.
I’ll be getting this after COVID so that I can ride to Thailand again. I had a GS & a Diavel. Gs isn’t as comfortable as the Diavel at 200kmh.
I’m hoping the Tenere would be better due to it’s heavier weight.
that had to have been one of your best reviews ever. Funny cause I'm too short to ever ride that bike. But I do love my fzo7. Keep riding !
How tall are you?
I'm five seven, there many bikes that are out of reach. All the advs, etc. And my wallet Lol..
+Chuck Lome well there are some small adventurers but yes they are all quite expensive
It's weird how their "ride by wire" throttle has what looks like regular old throttle cables! Great review by the way, keep 'em coming!
Not really. The sensor is in with the throttle bodies not in the grip.
+TwoWheelObsession Ah, that's weird I would think it would be the other way around, thanks for the clarification!
Grrrrrr..... Thanks heaps, not....lol
After watching your review of the Healtech quickshifter, I upgraded my 2008 FJR1300 with one and I'm absolutely in love with my bike again.
Until, I came across this review, hearing your feedback on the effortless clutch.
As I ride more commute and have opportunity to ride some adventure trails with mates (something I clearly can't do on my FJR) I've been thinking of venturing to the dark side (as it were) to an adventure bike.
Given all my mates ride BMW's, Im still finding it hard to rule out the Yamaha Super Tenure.
Would be really cool to get a review by you riding this on some basis offroad trails.
Thanks for the review, and G'day from Perth, Western Australia.
Excellent Review !!! Great job giving the important points like seat height in relation to inseam, vibration, rpm at certain gears. This info helps riders decide on buying or not if they can't take a test ride. No annoying jokes or background music also 👏👏👏
Great review of an obviously fun bike with comfort clearly well thought out. I did like the FJR's menu system but the Beemer's menu system is as easy as the FJR's after a couple of rides. I remember the Triumph Trophy's menu system similar to the Beemer's being very complicated but that may have been because we owned the very basic Pan European then. Enjoyable video as usual Bryan.
Great job!! I'm very interested in this bike and can't wait to ride one. If any luck, next spring we could have our first adventure tour in the fam!! ✌️
I’m test riding one of these this weekend
Thanks for the review my fellow rider, doing a great job as always!
I was reading thru the other comments and i too would like you to test ride some of the steeds in the Triumph stable if the oportunity presents itself to you.
i have been eyeballing a lot of these long legged tourers lately. Currently i own a 2K3 SV1KN but im getting tired of fighting the wind, having cold hands during(S.Florida) "winter" rides and not having any storage for my gear and else. I have look a lot to sport tourers but these long legged wonders are looking better and better by the year even when some of them are a HORRID EYE SORE and cost as much as small new car. 😁. Love the S.Ten tho, LOOK MA', no stupid beak!!! LOL.
KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK! 👍✌
Very thorough review! 👍
Bryan, have you ever ridden the newer Honda Valkyrie?? just got one in addition to my FJR and I must say you can't beat that mighty gold wing engine on a cruiser, give it a try, ride safe
I’ve found my Yamaha to be so very reliable, unlike the BMW’s I’ve owned. Needless to say I’m never going back. Get the optional touring Windshield Yamaha offers and your Whining about the Windshield is over. Basically, once it’s broken in you can get on the road, set the cruise anywhere and just go. I generally set it between 75-100mph depending on where I’m at and turn up the music on my SENA and just go until I need fuel or am at my destination.
I'm going to buy this bike. Got a great deal on a 2015 regular model but it has cruise control that all that maters and i have never had a ADV bike. Had the 2014 FJR but stopped riding for medical reasons now I'm ready to go again. TwoWheels.. Does it have enough power... I have been riding for 23 years and dirt riding is what i miss. I know just farm roads are good enough for me but I'll be riding against the Cross County that my friend has.. He knows I ride everything and love motorcycles and I sat on one nut test rides are a no no in Reno NV.. I'm your size and this review just sold me.. I have a video of my FJR on RUclips. Thanks for the review.. Keep it up.. Would you buy this bike??
I am 59 and have had about 50 bikes over the years, cbr1000rr, vtr1000 allthe way down to my first 400four super sport, the Super Tenere 1200 is the best ever, be it Safety, ergonomics, durability, handling, only when you young and stupid do you ever have to go over 200kph, i have done my share of playing over 300kph, so except for hyper speed it does it all perfectly and in my opinion the best motorcycle ever even better than my other bike i still have the truimph wich is also a awesome bike👍 2010 with out bells and whistles
Great review I’ve seen it 3 times . I found a Tenere ES for 12999 near me . I am contemplating selling or trading my 12 V Strom 650 with about 8000 mi. mechanically excellent all service done . . Could u spare some advice to a Nieghbor in Ocala . Thanks so much for all this wealth of videos you’ve produced .
How does it compare to your fjr as a touring bike?
Very nice...Ok, so which one? The Super Tenere ES or the 1200 GSA??
Nice in-depth review providing a lot of information NOT found in brochures or a spec sheet. I have to take issue with your remark about "bang for the buck", however. I was *this* close to buying a 2016 Super Tenere ES for around $16,000 from my local Yam dealer. A friend suggested I look at the KTM 1190 Adventure and initially I thought it would be way out of my price range... Imagine my surprise when I discovered that the KTM was just $600 more than the Super Ten!!! I like the looks of the Yamaha but it's competition is just too strong at the upper range price point. In my opinion the base Super Tenere should cost around $12k, the ES model around $13k to be competitive. There's just no comparison between the KTM and Yamaha at a near-identical price point, IMO.
Love your videos. You have ridden the Tenere and the GSA. Your opinion which one would you but if money was not the prime consideration?
Brilliant review
Great review of a good bike.whereabouts are you anyway.
Informative rider review, liked your impression if the Tenera I run a Versys 1.0 comfy bike done Czech and Germany always looking though. Can you try the new Triumph Explorer would be interested in your review. BTW is your can mounted on your helmet chin?
As good, if not better, than any large adventure bike on the planet.Better, imo,on value for money alone.Shaft drive is a plus as well.👍👍
Bryan Thanks for the review on Tenere. I was looking at left over red and black15 model. ? Have you done a review on the Kawasaki concours 14? I know they are different beast. I just like to know if you have?
Great review overall. Really. But you did not mention anything about the ES (electronic suspension). I've ridden three non-ES Super Tenere bikes and I found the handling on curvy roads to be decent, but not incredible. I wonder if the ES on firmer settings would make this big bike handle a bit sharper on aggressive curvy roads?
Great review as usual.
I'm curious what do you think it would feel like cruising the interstate at 80mph? What rpm would it feel "too wound up", "too buzzy" ? (assuming you could tell on this short run) Also, I noticed you passed a bus, any wind buffing from that? Does it feel as planted as the FJR??
Thanks
It starts to get buzzy at 110-115mph.
Great review, very informative.
Nicely done review. It was unclear in the video does this baby have a gear indicator?
+Rich Vogel yes
Excellent review, thanks.
cheers
tony
Great video 🏍😎
Great review buddy ! One question though: Would this bike be good for someone who got his license last year ?A rookie in other words. I'm not a crazy driver I like to use the engine on a bike but never to a point where I feel out of control.
I really like this bike and being a bigger guy (6'2 210+ pounds) it seems like it would fit me.
I just started out riding a bike a few months ago and started right away on a the S10. I am 6'2 as well and ride with the seat in the higher position now but started out with the lower position which gave more stability. I had some issues at the beginning and even dropped the bike 3 times due to stupid maneuvers from my end as an absolute beginner. But that only happened while standing still and I have engine guards (get them even if you are an experienced driver). In my opinion it is a fantastic bike to start out. Very strong, very tall, but also very forgiving, stable and flickable. I can drive 8 to 10 hours a day without any pain. I would recommend however to buy a larger windshield. The original one is simply to small in our case. I have the Givi Airflow, but in the US get other brands as well. And if you go with the ES version you get all the creature comfort you can dream of, with the exception of a heated seat that the Triumph Explorer now offers and certainly the much higher prized GS. But then: Everyone has a GS so why should we :-)? And when it comes to security. The ABS, brakes (Brembo), riding modes (start with T for Touring) and the traction control (saved my butt once when my rear wheel washed out during pouring rain) are excellent. I am no expert on bikes, but the S10 is a dream bike and not as overbred as other bikes of this type. I love it.
Thanks buddy!
Hey how did it feel when you got back to your bike and the hard clutch? Unfortunately the new 6 speed FJR has exactly the same gearbox as the old one, only that they managed to fit an extra gear into the very same space!! Great review, the ST is up there in my wish list for that great present from me to me when I retire in the near future. Happy riding.
I have the lighter pull slipper clutch installed on my 14, and that's not true, it's 100% new, all new design and gears. While it's not super slick like others, the 16+ is a bit smoother.
Now I must have been pissed when I read that somewhere, or maybe that applied to the normal gearbox, whatever, loved your video lol
hi Bryan, I am a huge fan of both channels and I am new to the Motorcycle world and I really enjoy your vids, as a beginner do you think the Kawasaki Vulcan is a good beginner bike? thanks and can't wait to see some new stuff in the channel.
+Tyler Jones Thanks for watching! There's nothing about it that stands out bad, that say's it wouldn't be. Yo just need to ride one or at least sit on one to make sure it fits you well. If it's one thing I've learned from rising 50+ bikes so far, it's that things will surprise you - both ways.
+TwoWheelObsession thanks Bryan, are you aware of anyways to learn more about riding? like can you take courses on how to ride bikes?
+Tyler Jones IMO every new rider at the very least needs to take an MSF course www.msf-usa.org/
+TwoWheelObsession cool, what do you know about the Kawasaki Versys?
+TwoWheelObsession cool, what do you know about the Kawasaki Versys?
hi, greeting from Asia. i vote Kawasaki Versys 1000 for next review, please :). as always great vlog. love it
+Indra Djaya Putra Hello from Tampa :) Thanks for watching!
Hi Brain. For your long trip, would you comfotr wise chosse the fjr or this one ?
Stay safe. Greetings from germany =)
Btw love your passion for bikes especially for the fjr.
+Fabian W. For me, the FJR. While the ST has a better seating position strictly comfort-wise, the FJR has much less vibration. Apples and oranges though fro most uses. The FJR doesn't go off road at all.
I don't understand why you fine folks don't countersteer from side to side on a demo ride. I like to know how a bike handles and when/where the foot pegs scrape. Yes, I let the guy/gal behind me know I'm a loose canon. Excellent video btw.
+Sky King Because that sort of weaving in your lane is expressly prohibited on demo rides. When you do one, you'll get to her all the rules before the ride ;)
+TwoWheelObsession I've been on many demo rides. Don't be afraid to ask your sales guy/gal to tell the demo folks that you're close to buying and you want to know how the bike handles. Many times they will take you out by yourself and let you put the bike through it's paces.
OK prescient it love your show
where you from? That was 4th street and Gandy in St pete
That was fun, thanks!
This review was enough for me to just close the deal on a brand new left over 2016 in black the same as this one. Up here in Canada they come with the aluminum panniers standard. Was not sure if they came with them down there. In American $ I got it for 12.5 k out the door.
Great video; I've been waiting on this one for some time. I too would like to see a 2016 Triumph Explorer 1200 review; keep up the great work!
I am sure this is answered somewhere in a video - but, what is the mesh jacket you are wearing?
+jaffe Yep :) ruclips.net/video/sZMw9jEYQlI/видео.html
Is that the oil filter sticking out at the front of the bike just behind the front tire? If so I hope it comes with a skid plate.
+RedNeck Biker109 There are many available. The bike comes for street use out of the box. You can customize it any way you need past that.
I don't know if you said but what size was that Yamaha
+Todd Price 1200cc inline twin
Great review as always, thanks!
When you put on a Two brothers pipe then it sounds like a Sportster
Nagyon jó!
AHHHHHHHHHHH They have a sale on it 10,500$ off the price right now in my country but I have license restrictions here and can't ride it even if I buy it... Not untill I upgrade my license! This is so unfair its such a STEAL right now!
Here in Italy it's close too... it's 11,000 euro I am reallly thinking on buying it it's the last one the only thing that I am afraid of it's that electronic acceleration if it breaks down you are kind of doomed
xchalibur77 it won't screw up. It's a Yamaha. Search for Reliability issues on the Super Tenere and you'll be surprised about what the owners complain about ahahah
Btw it has the old two cables method running from the accelerator to the throttle body.
great bike, but that speedometer/tachometer messed up whole bike. So old fashion
