"Marriage, also called matrimony or wedlock, is a socially or ritually recognised union between spouses that establishes rights and obligations between those spouses, as well as between them and any resulting biological or adopted children and affinity (in-laws and other family through marriage). The definition of marriage varies around the world not only between cultures and between religions, but also throughout the history of any given culture and religion, evolving to both expand and constrict in who and what is encompassed, but typically it is principally an institution in which interpersonal relationships, usually sexual, are acknowledged or sanctioned. In some cultures, marriage is recommended or considered to be compulsory before pursuing any sexual activity. When defined broadly, marriage is considered a cultural universal. A marriage ceremony is known as a wedding." - wikipedia

I don't think its some blind trust thing because he has a certificate. What the counselor was saying seemed to make a lot of sense. If the couples are willing to put in work, why shouldn't they be compatible? The obviously care about each other and are willing (and should be able) to do it. He did mention that if they aren't putting in the work it might be time. For the most part though, what he said made logical sense.
Letting that one lady impact your opinion in another therapist is like doing what you're complaining she was doing. Letting something from the past overtake your perception of current reality without thinking.

This age-old dilemma has been tentatively solved pending further testing. The male is supposed to ask the female "Guess where I'm taking you to eat?!" Hopefully she responds with some specific eatery. The male then says, "You got it! Darn! You're so good at figuring me out." Then the male takes her to eat there.

I especially like his thoughts on counselling spanning over 2 years is ridiculous. A counsellor is paid well, but I would rather pay more for a shorter period of time with one interested in getting results. The old cliche of lying on a couch talking about your problems is old school. I think most modern men know how to grow a pair and make changes instead of droning on about problems without looking for a solution. That applies to couples too. Good marriages have open communication. If you can't get the dialogue going at home, get it going with help of a counsellor, but don't leave the meter running! Let the counsellor know your story, but get real world homework to do when you leave the office. Good therapists want to solve your issues, not just leave "the meter running" for years.

I’m married and have two small children and work in the social work field with many therapist friends. All of this is great, useful information. My husband and I do not go to therapy, but these are all things we work on together. I firmly believe love, after its initial “honeymoon phase” is a choice. You have to wake up every day and choose to love the other person and choose to put effort into your relationship. I feel movies have given a false representation as to what “Love” is, like it’s a magical cure all and can magically get you through anything thrown your way. When in reality, you have to put in so much work. This was one of my favorite “chatting with” episodes. Nicely done.

Andrew!!! this is another one of my fave interviews! I just commented on how I loved the expert on narcissism one as well. This video was so incredibly insightful. I've grown up to realize that relationships are constant work, work and effort that HAS to come from both parties involved. I truly believe that through hard work and commitment that couples can overcome almost anything- I won't say "everything" because sometimes that's not true. This therapist was so insightful. Premarital counseling is great. My husband and I did it. It's been two years and just this past weekend we were having a disagreement over something important and we looked back together on what the counselor said and it helped us work it out in a healthy, non confrontational manner. We rarely have arguments and I attribute that partly to getting a solid foundation on conflict resolution before marriage.

The trust he is talking about is control. Free-flowing love is full of trust. Trust in life that this love will last exactly how it should last. Trust in yourself that you will find love again. Trust in the other that she/he also knows how to love. Free-flowing love is the only one with real trust. His trust is that of a prison. "Are the walls around me solid enough so I won't be able to move? Are the walls around my parter strong enough so she/he won't be able to move?" His trust is against spontaneity or discovery. It's a dead trust, not an alive thing. It is attachment, dependance, control, expectation and last but not least: fear. His trust is in relationship with fear, not with love. It is a negative trust. Two birds encaging one another.
Really awesome series. Your questions are dead on, you truly are seeking answers.

The eye contact phenomenon really blew my mind. I love deep conversation, and I hate eye contact. There's apparently a connection there. How intriguing.
