@@KutWrite The closure was due to neighbors complaining of noise specifically the jets. It was my understanding that it was the voices of the few who did the complaining. The original runway was 4,973' and they had Gulfstreams, Challengers, and the like coming in regularly along with a lot of GA traffic. In the mid 80's SMO was the busiest single runway airport in the US. During my private training days in the early 80's I can remember being number 15 in sequence for takeoff and number 12 in the pattern for landing. I was regularly turning base 6-7 miles from the airport. I remember turning left base pointing at the Hollywood sign which is around a 10 mile left base. I loved it. Anyway, recently they shorten the runway to 3,500' to get rid of the larger jets. They introduced landing fees. They didn't renew flight school leases and schools moved or closed. The city of SM stop taking federal funding so they could begin the process of closing the airport. As it stands 2028 is it. I've been coming to this airport for over 50 years and it is going to be a very said day to see the last plane takeoff.
Brings back memories. Got my commercial and instrument cards flying out of - and working - there. At the time, it had a big "No Jets" sign on the approach end of the runway.

I got sent home from school with a note when I was 6, it said your kid can't see, needs glasses. By 8, I was wearing "coke bottle" glasses! I struggled with it, got picked on. I was almost 40 before good technology came along, my glasses look more normal now. But, that comes with a price. $700/pair, $1500 for clear&sun glass. You learn fast to keep really good track of them, and treat them right!! I get cataract surgery in both this fall. A newer company, Flying Eyes, makes great glasses also. Very light, and bows are super thin, they slide under the head set and you don't even know they are there! That's from a "wish I wasn't" an expert on them LOL Sitting around the hanger we've talked about light jets vs turbo props. In the perfect world, it would be cool to just replace engines with newer ones on older jets. Newer, larger Citations seem to get much better fuel economy. I had never looked before, makes sense though. Of course if your buying a jet it shouldn't matter that much 8) This one looks really sweet!! Thanks Rich!! Hope things are well with you!! 8) --gary
Thanks for the message Gary. I have a pair of Flying Eyes, but the tint was a little too strong and not able to see the avionics as well as I want. I’ll report on the progressives when I get them. Thanks for watching!
You mentioned the altitude off the IZZZO over HRRBR transitioning to PHRED for the THRNE3. The altitude cap of FL320 is an LOA altitude between ZAB and ZLA for all the basin and valley airports off the P50 terminal area. FL340 is the LOA altitude over PHRED for enroute aircraft, FL360 over EMLLD. LAX arrivals off P50 airports are also capped at FL320, as are KSAN terminal arrivals. KSAN terminal enroute arrivals are descended to FL340. I'm a controller who works at ZAB (126.45 and 135.15).
Watching your videos I’m so amazed at your skills flying so many different types of airplanes. You are a true aviator. Btw, in a couple weeks I’m flying from F70 to KAVX for a buffalo burger 😃🤙🏻
Rich, if you’ve never worn progressive’s, it’ll take a week or so to become acclimated, so be patient. I wanted to throw mine in the trash after first couple days but glad I hung in there. Appreciate your videos!
Dang Rich! If I knew you were in the valley I’d have taken you out to lunch! I’m opposite end of the valley, KGEU is the closest to me, but the drive would’ve been worth it to meet the legend!
Great video beautiful airplane. Looks like a pleasure to fly. Really sips fuel up high. What was your roc up to fl320 in that heat. Wish I could afford one. Just have to plug along in my pa32. Thanks.
Interesting video Rich. I was wondering if in a future "relaxed" type flight like this, you might give us a look at whatever type of quick-donning oxygen mask is most common in single-pilot Citations. At FL320 you have at least a minute of useful consciousness (TOC), but a pilot in a Citation cruising along (perhaps even solo) at 410 has what, 12 or 15 seconds of TOC available?
Quick question if I my, why would a pilot chose an in airplane type rating over one done in a sim for the Mustang? In my experience of bigger aircraft you can do so much more and so much safer training in a sim and you can concentrate on the important areas with the ability to almost instantaneously reposition.
I think pros and cons to both. We can normally do an in aircraft type rating in a week where sim courses are 2 weeks. I’m a proponent for sim training and do it twice a year a FlightSafety, but I see some real advantages in the airplane as well. Most people who do in aircraft type rating go to sim recurrent for first 61.58.
@@FlyingwithRich Thanks. Have you handled a foreign registered aircraft that had to have a US “N” number assigned? Repaint the tail to accomplish that? I’ve always admired the Mustang. A nice mid-point between high performance pistons and the other Citations. Cheers.

I got my private at SMO in the 80's at the fame Gunnell Aviation. Airport scheduled to close in 2028 what a shame. Love your videos!
I wondered what happened to the closure.
I guess the real estate tycoons have more juice at city hall than those hangaring their jets there.

Yes, Monday - Wednesday.
