If you look early on RDJ was improvising as well: but also Ben stiller did the same: almost taking turns with RDJ being the "serious" or base contrast while the others popped.

The Temptations, The Four Tops, The Five Satins, The Barons, Gene Chandler and RDJ could have danced with anyone one of them. They would have asked Jack to leave the stage. He got away with it here because it wasn't a serious take.

I love how Ben has little to no rhythm but doing his best, Jack dances too hard with slightly better rhythm than Ben and is having a great time, and Robert Downery Jr. has the cool dude swagger and rhythm thing going on lol.

We don't know that all of them knew the song before they rehearsed the performance. They probably _did_ know it as it is a popular song, but seeing them perform it doesn't prove they had a lot of respect for Gladys. Just a silly statement that assumes a bit too much.

I was really surprised at how smooth Robert Downey Jr was in his dancing. He could have been a real PIP if that acting thing had not worked out for him.
He played Chaplin. Chaplin was called "the fucking dancer" by one of his contemporaries. Chaplin was a master at rhythm and body movement, so if RDJ could play Chaplin it's because he has that in him.

Jack Black’s pure energy and obvious love of music is just so dang infectious that as the performance goes on, it starts to positively affect Stiller and RDJ - Stiller gradually starts to let loose a bit more and gave some fun with it, and RDJ breaks his natural coolest dude onstage vibe to smirk and try suppressing a laugh at Jack’s antics. No way you can be that close to the sun of Jack Black up onstage and not feel the warmth of those rays of pure excitement and joy! Loved and needed this!
Oh, and can we talk about how Gladys is older than all of them but looks their age or even a smidge younger…? Forever gorgeous!
