      @@irehman7 Quick question. For the Copperfield illusion; Is it possible that at feet level there is a black slip they pull over themselves that stretches' the entire length runway behind them. I'm not sure but it looks like there at the back of the platform is a spring panel that let's them take the necessary step down to the runway, This is when they enter under the black slip cover. I think a key frame during the illusion is seen under the platform right after they disappear, it's black for a second and then returns to normal .

    Thank you for covering David Copperfield's Portal trick. Your explanation of the green screen and prerecorded beach scene is very clear and easy to understand. Your reveal of the platform escape made me so happy, with including the G-force math and examples of how that pulley system has been used in other special effects. That really helped me wrap my mind around how fast that escape happens.

      all the editing could be done months in advance as well. with only the texture maps for the initials and the polaroid changed for the final render shown on the screen. you don't need to track the hand in realtime or track the polariod image in real time if the beach was filmed months before and there's only marker bits on it. basically if he just put his hand in a scanner with the skin flat on it to get the texture(glue some marker lines on the flatbed scanner itself to get the hand in same position every time) , it would go into the already prepared script that would replace the texture map and run a render of the video. the actual render part of the video doesn't need much cpu even if its a bespoke script/program that does that part, easily* doable on those resolutions even on a 2002 computer.
      I say easily but I mean for like a competent realtime multimedia programmer, don't need to be a john carmack to do it - all the heavy work calculations can be done in advance.

      Agreed. I saw this trick live and I just couldn't believe my eyes. In another trick, he was on essentially what looked like a high dive that protruded somewhat over the crowd and a sheet came down over him and fell away to the floor and he was gone. In maybe 2 seconds.

    So you're mostly right about the dynamo bucket of fish trick. I'll give you a hint as to the actual method: Look at how stationary the bottom edge of the bucket is when dumping out the large number of fish and how its perfectly stabilized while the rest of the bucket pivots around it. Also in the footage you can see his body covers that corner for several of the shots but when it doesn't there's clearly some video masking that's poorly done.

    I absolutely love your videos, I have learned a lot from them, for which I thank you.
    Ref: 49:20 During the 90's and 2000's I performed fire 'tricks' including escapology with explosives and body burning with fire sticks and what was basically fire lighter fluid, I never had any professional fire suits like in these type of performances, I did do it for real though and have the scars to prove it, even did it live on TV (nice burn on my leg made people squeal a bit lol) and taught someone to eat fire (not blow) backstage and they performed with me for the end of the show and she really was a volunteer from the audience and bloody lovely she was too 🙂.
    I also put fire shows together with up to 60 performers for some big raves around the UK, with tower lorries, flame throwers, lots of pyros, fire pits and so on, so loved those times, now live on my boat on a nice quiet canal in Yorkshire, UK.
    Oh Yeah, I also ate fire for the then Queen Liz and our now King Charles for his 50th Birthday at Buckingham Palace, he had seen me at an event (no not a rave, was at the Royal Albert Hall) and got me booked for his Birthday.

    Love your videos but I think using the flying apparatus for David's ONE appearance is much too complex to be used as the solution. I've see this live on multiple occasions and the platform and hanging cloth are visible for quite some time before the show starts and they even have audience members come up to inspect it. I think it's much simpler than using the flying mechanism. If you look closely at the assistants lifting the platform, the ones on the left purposefully lean into the support cones, while the assistants on the right are a standing away from the cones. My theory is that the assistants on the left are standing close the cones to block the view behind them. When the curtain cloth comes down, Copperfield is able to climb up on the platform, behind the left-back assistant where he is hidden from view. In the live version, it looked to me that he was using BA to get in position behind his assistants. I couldn't see him get into position, but the stage was lit exactly as I would expect for BA use.

  • @lennyteske1864

    Here is my thing with the portal. The people on the stage just seemed too comfortable. They did not seem nervous and the little kid, if he were truly picked, would be so nervous and didn't need anything further explained. For instance, there is a good chance the kid would say "You want me to draw here, or would have drawn too small or would have been giggling, maybe wouldn't have stood in the right spot. When taking the video, if you have ever tried to take a picture of a group of people, no one can figure out where to stand, how to stand, etc... These people didn't need directions, just stood perfect. They all just seemed too comfortable and just did not seem random. Also, when the guy signed on the arm, the letters looked too perfect. When you draw on skin, the marker would not have been so perfect looking. It would have faded a little at the ends. Especially on skin. If you take a marker and draw on someone's arm the way he did, it doesn't even come close to looking like that. Now, I'm not saying I have it figured out, those are just my observations. Another fantastic job though with the video. Top notch!

  • @radodjsessions

    Disappearance from the platform still remains a mystery to me. In the original recording, we can see earlier that people are sitting behind the platform, we can see their heads and at the end of platform there are two vertical metal pillars, that are quite close to each other. We need to keep in mind that there are two heavy adult men, and if they were pulled in, they would have to fit together between the pillars without hitting them to land behind the platform in a place where we can see the audience. There would have to be an airbag in the hole to eliminate the fall. People sitting on the side would clearly see them underneth the curtain and falling with the impact to the hole. This is the best explanation we have so far, but I think there is still some mystery left unsolved.

    • @irehman7
      @irehman7  Месяц назад +5

      If there were more videos on RUclips of David performing Portal on different stages, it would help pinpoint the exact method. For now, this is the most logical and safest way to perform it, based on practical methods used in stunts, aligned with the footage evidence.

      @@irehman7 This illusion is a part of XVII: Tornado of Fire ( ruclips.net/video/yjY0eSsH81Q/видео.html ). At 28:35 we can see the other trick with two disappearing girls. We can only see the front, but looks like the back must be visible to the audience sitting there. So maybe the whole part of this theater is filled up with fake audience, which would explain invisibility of the illusion with the portal later?

      @@irehman7 My concern is that their combined weight being lifted from the platform made it only move slightly, I don’t understand how it didn’t send it bouncing up and down. I know that the video is low resolution because I don’t think he has ever put this out in DVD, but it seems incredibly dangerous for them both to be pulled away at that speed, their mass together doesn’t seem like it matches what it should look like if they are strapped together being pulled through the air horizontally. It’s incredibly confusing as to how it is done. I wish I could have been in the audience. I bet all the people sitting on the sides are in on it, I think the camera’s view is the only place he wants people watching.

    • @andrewz4718
      @andrewz4718 21 час назад

      It would be too dangerous to perform without some form of protection but David would have had the resources to potentially have inflatable body protection that would have made it a lot safer. Its impossible to know how much the platform should have moved without their body weight without knowing exactly how it was constructed but we know they were there and we know they were hone and we can set the net movement and it isn't much.

    For the saw blade trick, I believe it's a much simpler explanation: The blade is actually behind her neck. Notice the angle of the camera is placed below the blade and table so we can't see them from above? This is to give the illusion that it's closer to her neck than it actually is. It's actually going behind her neck and there is a guard in place between her neck and where the blade is as an extra safety measure. It's just a simple illusion. 35:35

If the audience were convinced that they were seeing a live feed, how did David accomplish the transition between live and prerecord? I'm confident of my answer but it's irrelevant if I'm wrong about what was being displayed to the audience on the big screen.

    • @irehman7
      @irehman7  Месяц назад +2

      I mentioned in the explanation that there was no transition between live and pre recorded footage. The "live feed" was entire pre-recorded, which was playing on a green screen and allowed David and Michael to over lap on the green screen footage.

      @@irehman7 I had believed, and continue to believe, that the prerecorded hand-held camera footage is not "hand-held" at all. Bare with me. You can see evidence of my theory at 10:58 in your video, where the camera begins from pointing at the palm-tree canopy and spirals down and out for about 1.5 seconds. This is a camera mounted on a robotic arm. The movement of the prerecorded camera is entirely programed. This has to be so (or so I think) because of how both the studio camera and the beach camera both zoom in perfect sync with each other. I think this is all programed. Also the shaking of the beach camera is more pronounced than it would be if an actual cameraman was holding it. Additionally, when the beach camera is static for a long while, there is no shaking (as far as I can tell) and keep in mind how smoothly the camera rotated and spiraled from the treetop. This is not at all consistent with the amount of shaking we saw almost everywhere else.

      The hearts suit was force before the show started. Basically what the magician does is has the drummer before the show select any card and say that whichever card you select I'm not gonna see but you're gonna remember it and during the show when the time comes you're going to say your selection so for the drummer in his mind he knows he's saying the selection he made before the show where everyone else thinks it was made on spot.

    Regarding professional psychics, particularly those that claim to speak to the dead, I can't help but remember a TV program regarding them which included a member of a spiritualist church.
    His take on the matter was that if approached by some grieving relative, the reaction of him and his church would be to try and give comfort, not take money, and hope that they could get the person in distress back on their feet and ideally never see them again. Essentially the opposite of many "psychics".

    @farquoi Месяц назад +1

    Your explanation works 100%, but you're wrong about live tracking being impossible in 2001. It was impossible on a pc, but it was being on on SGI. Discreet Logic Flame had 3D tracking in 1998. All you need is to track a grid to squeeze that text a bit organically . Copperfield only needed to have four crosses to track on the arm and on the blank photo. Also, we did have HD cameras back then (HDCam is in 1997), but the low resolution actually works in the trick's favor here. What could have been done was the picture was sent to the beach and tracked locally there on the feed of the arm. Yes, we also had fast internet. But your solution is simpler, I think.

      Hey, I appreciate the input, but a few things to clarify. You're right that Discreet Logic Flame had 3D tracking back in 1998, but the issue here is more about real-time tracking during a live performance. While Flame was capable of impressive post-production work, real-time 3D tracking during a live show, especially on something like a moving arm, would have been nearly impossible in 2001. Most tracking done live would have required markers and much more precise control than what could be done at the time, especially with the tech limits on live broadcasts.
      Also, while HDCAM existed from 1997, it wasn't the go-to for live TV until years later. Copperfield's broadcasts were likely still using standard definition, and even if HD was used, live compositing and tracking would have faced huge technical hurdles, especially with 2001's bandwidth limitations. Fast internet was definitely a thing, but not fast enough to stream and manipulate high-res live video in real-time with tracking like you're suggesting.

      @@irehman7 various sgi apps did real-time tracking and video effects in the late 1990s. For Discreet, the software was called Discreet Logic Vapour and Frost. There were other but I only know the diacreet ones because I worked for Softimage in the 1990s

      I was suggesting that the video could have been composited in Hawaii and steamed lived from there. The only internet used would be to send the photo of the whiteboard and the harm drawing to Hawaii. But your solution - also real time, probably also on SGI - is more low tech and easier

  • @robbade3899

    A word about the Greenbox theory: This can't quite be right. You can clearly see that when the camera zooms on David's arm, the background does not remain static, but is also zoomed in. This speaks more for a back projection. A green box should have worked with live motion tracking, which is only very feasible even in large studios with post-production, and in 2006 this technique did not exist to my knowledge. Please take a closer look at this and check whether your theory is correct.
    It was also interesting that you could hear a microphone difference during the live show. The phrase "Close your eyes" is no longer spoken live by David, but is recorded by the tape, another sign that something must be going on behind the curtain and david isn't able to speak anymore.During the live show I noticed this very clearly, because there was a difference in tone in the microphone.
    I also saw the trick live in Munich in 2006 and I have to say that it was his best illusion so far.

    Thank you for the video.
    For me, magic tricks that use camera cuts are not magic tricks but cheating. I might as well watch The Incredible Burt Wonderstone.
    The camera technique in Copperfield's trick is something different, it's still live, but I don't like tricks like the pile of fish out of the bucket or the teleported lemon.

    look the compression on the video broadcast would be just put on as an after effect for the show to reduce the definition on purpose. BUT !!! you forget!!! all the EDITING can be done in advance! only the texture map needs to be switched.

    If I had seen the mentalist trick I would have known immediately how it was done. I cannot believe so-called mentalists are still relying on the code-word/phrase that I first read about 40 years ago, in a book written 15-20 years before, that took place in the 1800s. I thought it was neat when I read about it but thought more people would have known how this was done by now.

    Dynamo trick i think has to do more with video editing. If you pay attention to the motion the bucket is actually doing while hes shaking it , it seems to be attached to something at the bottom. Could be something like a wide tube coming from the other side behind him . When you shake a bucket like that even if empty , theres plenty of chance the whole bucket is gonna move up and down , his bucket only moves up and down on the rim, the bottom aint moving at all . Almost like resting on the edge o something. This could be confirmed by the ppls reaction there, really fake reactions needless to say. Since theres couple cuts and edited for continuity.. like you say, then is pretty obvious here gonna a cut before he starts pouring and right after hes done .

    Given that the appearance is pre-recorded it seems like there are alot of options for how to do it. Hole is plausible but doesn't seem like the only one. Even in 01 there was alot of camera trickery that was possible given they had plenty of time. But that's not really the amazing part of the trick. It's just a boring appearance -- though you are probably right that Copperfield just used standard methods rather than video editing it is possible.
