My problem with the Intrepid isn't that it's not better than the Avenger, it's that without the sale it's more expensive than the Avenger and Cutter for a starter package, both of which can outperform it at different duties. It doesn't feel like a jack of all trades upgrade, it feels like a jack of all trades downgrade for a price increase.
Exactly this, like if it was prices more like the cutter it would have made sense, cause it’s a competitor to that one and not the titan, as it’s being priced as.
@@AlexeiX1 Yeah, here's the lineup I've come up with talking to people: -The Avenger does combat a lot better, transport a little better thanks to having a unified hold instead of the sleds, and personal amenities worse. -The Cutter does combat worse, transport a lot better thanks to the big box that can hold vehicles, and personal amenities the same. -BOTH have a smaller target footprint, even if the Avenger does start to get close the Intrepid is a bullseye if it gets in trouble. The Intrepid, in a category supposed to give you a little bit of everything, is mostly limited to box and light cargo transport, and a transport to get you to FPS missions, and even for them the other two do better since their unified cargo makes it easier to stash loot and the more convenient vehicle storage, especially for the Cutter, means they both still do it better even with the Avenger's limited amenities.
@@fairq6063 … You’re comparing a torpedo boat to a cruise ship. Like… They just aren’t comparable. It’s not like this, where the Avenger, Cutter, and Intrepid all fulfill the exact same role as a small cargo starter ship. They should be comparable, not identical, but close enough to one another that the decision between them is up to personal preference, rather than one being more expensive for the same thing.
A good starter ship needs to provide the player with the most varied means as possible to engage in game loops and make that early cash. It will never be all the gameloops, but if it can cover 2 or 3 its good enough. Usually that would mean the two game loops that are core - combat and cargo transport - as these two skills usually link to other loops in the future.
We need a starter for "mechanical proffesion" jobs/gameplay. Like salvaging, and in the future repair/crafting. I wouldn't mind a space pickup truck with a welder in the bed. We don't even have a starter mining ship yet, which i think would be helpful.
The problem with starters is that they HAVE to be priced well, because not many people are going to buy them with in-game currency ( not that I don't, i love small solo ships ). But in general terms, a starter should be a platform to earn money to get to the next level, be it something more specialized, or a do it all like the Cutlass. as you mentionned in the video, the Intrepid doesn't stand out, it's a good ship, but only if it's offered at a good price, which currently, it isn't
This, right here. Currently, the Intrepid currently has nothing practical on offer that isn’t done better by the cheaper Avenger Titan, save for the engineering panel. If it was the price of the Avenger or the Cutter, it’d be fine, good even, but it costs more, even though you’re getting less.
It's not a starter though. It's an advanced starter. People who have Auroras and Mustangs are 100% going to be upgrading in game. It stands out as a box runner/shuttle. You put 8 SCU in a Titan and you can't use the back door. You put 8 SCU in this and you won't even notice. The fact is the Avenger is just at a way better price point than almost everything right now and you shouldn't be comparing ships based on that because we all know that is going to change as soon as it is reworked.
@@TheSigmaWolves I would like the Nomad if the cargo hold was enclosed. An exposed cargo hold is just asking for your boxes to be destroyed when someone's on your ass or for them to burn-up in atmospheric re-entry. I don't care about the fictional shield tech of SC, those boxes should not be safe during re-entry.
You don't have to "beat" the Avenger, but you have to not be worse at everything and cost more. The Cutter isn't better than the Avenger at anything, but it's a much better option than the Intrepid. There's nothing basically "wrong" about the Intrepid now that it has an s4, but it's at least $10 too expensive. That nice interior isn't going to do anything for you for a couple years, by which time you likely will have moved on. And if you haven't? A 300 series would have been a better choice.
I started off with the cutlass and picked up the cutter, figured it be easier to land etc to run box missions as I figured out how this game works. Well, unfortunately the cutter always seems to glitch out the packages..sticking to the ceiling and just flat falling out the ship. From what I’ve read something to do with how low to the ground/deck. Some kind of wierd game physics. Cutlass, not one time has this happened, rented the titan from IAE ran 8 missions or so not one glitch in even this buggy patch. Matter of fact I came across a deserted cutter and a package sitting on the deck inside a hab on micro tech. For a noob like me the Titan is great. The Intrepid seems more of a niche hawker, box mission starter, curious if it will glitch the packages.
I really like, that your ship review is basically also a feature based video. It's diversifying the opinion pool around this ship, offers some new perspectives and raises some interesting questions regarding game play. Keep it up :)
The Avenger Titan is so good because it’s literally just a middleweight fighter with a bed and walkable cargohold effectively tacked on. The problem with the Intrepid is that it is worse than the Avenger Titan in nearly every way, but costs more. It has worse pitch/yaw/roll rate, is slower in every metric, has half the shield HP, deals much less DPS, has fewer missiles, and is physically larger. They have the same 8SCU of cargo, but the Intrepid’s method of holding said cargo is jankier, and ultimately less practical. None of the non-aesthetics criticisms I’ve seen have been demanding power creep. People just want a given starter ship to actually be competitive with its peers. And if it’s destined to be *worse* than its competition in so many ways, it should cost less. It’s brutally simple. And in classic Star Citizen fashion, a lot of the Intrepid’s balance issues demand remodeling. Want a bigger shield? Too bad, they’re going to have to rework the interior to accommodate it.
This might be "fixed" when the titan gets a rework and gets a wet tissue shield and it's guns swapped out for transmitters that broadcast foul language to it's attackers It happened to the cutty, and I don't think it will be the last
@@gunslingerspartan What happened to the cutty? As far as I can tell, all of its weapons, shields, and handling is that same it has been since the original rework way back... I mean I think s2 shields got nerfed, but that hits everyone.
Intrepid has a lot more fuel. You can jump to Pyro with it, while you can't with the Titan. That's already a deal-breaker for some gameplays. And camper-wise, the amenities are nice.
@@pxkqd Quantum fuel is a nice bonus, but then why not cutter for cheaper and same amenities? $15 to $25 (depending on cutter variant) is a lot of bougie money for the same stat line. I mean aesthetics matter, but at a certain point price has to come with performance. This is an excellent choice for $50. $65 is kinda crazy.
If they either stuck a size 5 on there or added at least a chin turret with 2 size 1's or 2's it would sort of make sense as a small explorer due to the amenities aboard or a smuggling ship. As of now it should sit maybe at the $50-55 dollar mark or so, not the same or more as the Avenger.
I'd like to see a series of videos "all things necessary for beginners". what should they know before buying a game package. what professions are there already, how fleshed out are they, what's currently on the way and what other professions could come into the game. what starter ships pair best with which profession, how can you progress through each profession, what are your next steps when upgrading from starter ship to intermediate ship through in game play without cheesing your way through by doing drug runs or alike. what planets should you go to and why, what game loops are there and stuff like that.
@tillonoma6155 That would be awesome. And even for those that just casually have been on and off for a few years could use videos like that as a where is the current state of the game. And then maybe a synopsis each patch to say these are still good where these are having a rough time.
It can't beat the Titan in any metric performance wise, but it's more cozy, the interior is better. It should have been at worse priced the same, but it's not
@@QuotidianStupidity I would hope so. If they rearranged the cabinets opposite the bed, it seems a simple toilet would fit no problem. The Avenger suffers from what Tomato was talking about with regard to the Aurora and Mustang being made for a different game. All 3 are very old designs from the game's infancy.
People are forgetting that even for those of us with large fleets, we're still going to need soloable ships so everyone is going to need some sort of starter when things reset. I love my intrepid, fast, gets in and out of atmo, i can log, and use it to grind merc bunker rep
I am glad you love it. I am always on the hunt for a runabout. Medipisces is my usual. But the avenger, beta, 100, 300, and aurora all do the same thing for less real world money while also being smaller or faster or with more DPS or better shields or all of the above. But the internal aesthetics are nice. The one gun aiming is nice. But not $65 nice, and the reaction people have to this ship is based on disappointment for what could've been instead. I think a lot of people were very excited for this.
@@johnboyd9713 I hate it purely for its exterior look. Its a block. It has none of Crusader's sleek flowing lines. It doesn't have the gentle curve down the centre that all Crusader ships have. This thing should fly like a brick in the atmosphere and handle like a barge. Might be fine in Space, but in atmo its tiny engines and blocky profile should see even an Aurora out-run it. It looks like the aborted love child of an unholy union between a C1, Ion and Star Runner.
@@TypicalDutchSaysHi I would argue it barely even follows the established crusader design language with how blocky it is. everything is sharp angles and straight lines, barely any curves to speak of
@@TypicalDutchSaysHi For real money, without an overhaul, definitely not. MAybe if the in-game price is REALLY good I'd change my tune and buy it in game
I truly believe that the intrepid was purpose made for packers delivery runs. It's a very quick ship able to get around pretty swiftly, Is is great handling inside the atmosphere. And has 8 slots for boxesThere can be access from the outside of the ship. As well as the inside. It's not meant to be a combat ship it's meant to be a speedy run about and I think it handles it pretty well now that I've had a chance to fly it a little bit. And in my opinion package delivery is the best thing that a new player can do to get his feet wet in the universe because it teaches you a lot of the basic systems in the game. Piloting landing take off. Different environments that you have to go through how Access bases. And of course how to use your quantum travel system to quickly get around. The fact that gun is an afterthought is probably because it was an after thought
for 5 bucks more you get the 325a... a beautiful looking and very capable ship with great speed, fire power, a bit of cargo and beautiful interior that can even be customized.
Avenger Titan and Cutter can fit the construction grav cart for base building. The Intrepid cannot. The Titan and cutter are now base building starters. That furthers the gap significantly IMO
IMO. I think the interior is awesome, especially for a "mid" starter, CIG knocked it out of the park with this one! Exterior is subjective, and I have several Crusader ships which I love, if they centered the pilots area like the Ares or Star Runner, this would have been an all around home run! I would still recommend people looking for a good starter to consider the Intrepid. Just my 2 cents.
I bought the starter package with aurora in 2016. Later i bought the mustang explorer out of boardem but melted it for the titan. I have not bought a ship with real money since then and I've done pretty well making money with the titan where I can. Since I run bunkers mostly I now use the pisces with its med bed which cuts down times flying back to a station to heal tier 3 wounds. Doesn't take a lot of Uec to invest in ships that make the game enjoyable. Yes the titan is the goat👍
I think the presence of the engineering console implies that the Intrepid might be much harder to fully kill once we get more disable centric combat mechanics over destruction centric combat. During the IAE Day 1 video one of the devs (I forget which) also said that small, fighter sized ships would be more likely to just explode. Since then I've been wondering if the presence of a full engineering console might be where they draw that line. Also, a bit of a reach, but the trailer for the Intrepid is about a family buying their son his first ship, that kind of also carries the implication that the Intrepid is seen as a safe ship to get new pilots through stupid decisions ect. Just my 2c.
In regards to the weapon, since it is a S4 mount it can mount the C-788 which currently has a range of 6525 meters, also since it's a singe mount it's not trying to deal with convergence across multiple weapons so it should be fairly consistent aim wise when trying to target infantry and objects on the ground.
IMO this is a great starter ship, it's a jack of all trades master of none. it's great for 1scu box missions aka the starter cargo hauling missions. it's decent for VLRT-LRT bounty hunting. it's a starter ship and I think people forget it's a ship for new players starting the game to use for the starter missions. it's supposed to be a ship you move on from but give you a nice new player feeling.
It's not underpowered, it's overpriced. As a $45 cutter competitor it would be great. But at $65 it's competing with ships with 50% more cargo AND more combat capability.
@@rakaydosdraj8405 This ship - like all the others will be available with in game credits. If Price was the only consideration, Nobody would ever fly a Titan, Suylen, Nomad, Cutter or Cutty Black ..The Mustang and Aurora are cheaper
@@lights4bre890 Can confirm... as the Suylen's launch with IAE last year was what got me into the game, and it's still my favorite ship to fly, as a starter. Coming from Elite and used to odd controls from my mangled creations in KSP, the Suylen is a starter if you want something unique, and it delivers. If I was going by cost alone, it'd just be an Aurora.
@@lights4bre890 it's not price by itself that's a factor, it's price to performance. the intrepid is a little bit more expensive than the titan while being worse than the titan in most ways
Great review and I wholly agree. I prefer the focussed starter ships - be it cargo, combat, or some other specific advantage. The Intrepid is a better home than most ships - and I think that's going to become pretty important eventually.
As an illustration of how new players will find a ship, I was a watching a Loud Guns (or maybe it was SMB) video trying to decide if I wanted to buy SC when I saw a Cutter (with what I now know was the Noble paint) fly past in some stock footage and I instantly fell in love.
The Space Penguin! 😍Remember when it could take down a Hammerhead? I like the Intrepid. It's a roleplay ship, more than the Titan. I would have been interested if they had stuck two S3 weapons side by side. But the "do it all" and practicality of the Titan is just so superior for the current gameplay! And I mean come on...how cute is the space Penguin??? 😍
I've been flying this thing for days now an I really, really like it. I've been a Crusader fan for a while, and while I still think the shield needs an upgrade to S2 (as you said) I feel like it hits a good position. I like the places for the equipment, the on-board storage above the bed, and the prospect of the engineering that is all missing from the Avenger Titan. It should absolutely not be priced higher than the Avenger, but I like the ship for what it is.
Great points! My first ship long long ago was the 315p. It's fast, has panoramic view, and has plenty of cargo for a starter. I knew I wasn't into combat to start with, so that was fine, but definitely limiting or impossible there once I did want to try combat. So great points about emotions playing into the starter vessel more than anything - the discovery / explorer ship is what I chose, though the gameplay in that area seems extremely limited at the moment.
Three things should define the value of a Starter: Flexibility, Versatility, and Capability. Flexibility is a ship's ability to adapt to changing situations. Versatility is a ship's ability to fulfill multiple roles. Capability is a ship's ability to excel in a given role. The Intrepid is sadly worse in every category compared to the Avenger Titan, with the exception of extended living. At least until they add the arbitrary and artificial demands of "engineering" gameplay by making stuff fail randomly or break down on timescales that are far too short, utilizing disposable fuses that make no sense, and forcing players to engage in gameloops that should be optional or incidental. But more pointedly, the Intrepid feels like a better overall version of the Mustang Beta, a nice one-person camper with some capabilities. It will never outshine the Avenger in its current state, but it is a fair alternative if you aren't looking at doing combat, and it should likely be a long-range or exploration-focused alternative. The Titan isn't a ship someone should necessarily be living out of, while the Intrepid most certainly is.
Great video. I operate on the thought that I need to be excited to use my ships to have fun in the game. Actual performance is genuinely less of a concern. If you enjoy something, you'll make it work. This little crosseyed pancake is a great ship for me to do small things in.
It seems like a ship a new spaceman would actually buy to get going. You get a flying studio apartment, with 8 SCU of storage space, and the lone S4 gun, while not ideal, is adequate to defend yourself early on. I ran some VLRT/LRT missions with it stock, and a regular combat pilot from other games will be successful on the lower risk side of things with this, and the cargo space is enough to catch a bonus. One thing I noticed that was irksome, and I'm sure a bug, is that it currently has quadrant shields. Obviously if you only have one S1 SG, it should be a bubble. However, it does also double as a small shuttle, you can move two additional players without worrying about G effects, so if I'm trying to crew a Polaris because a couple gunners got shot in their turrets, I could potentially dispatch an Intrepid to bring them aboard.
New players should pick the titan, because it goes beyond being a starter. I still use it very often, because it is extremely versatile and the firepower it offers allows you to do jobs that the intrepid just can't do.
A good starter is determined byt the owners desire to fly the ship after its been replaced. The cutter is the only one of the starters that i consistently head back to. When you realise the 315p is the same price, and carries 12 scu, has 2 guns, and good atmo flight, and it doesn't break the lore of the game........
The titan is great to work a planet and it's moons. Maybe cross a small system like Stanton. The intrepid will be better if you want to venture further. I think it compares more to the cutter lineup and is a step up from that. Since they have longer range than the titans and nomads.
I think CIG priced the Intrepid too high (its functionally on par with the Rambler). Ships at the ~US$50 price point do most things marginally ok, but are nothing to write home about. Ships at the ~US$60 price point tend to do something well or start to have specialized roles (medi-bed, mining drills, etc). With current available gameplay, it is a disappointing starter ship at its price range. While future gameplay MIGHT make it more relevant, we are buying it in the present; so if CIG does make it more relevant later, they can increase its sales price then.
I love the attention to detail inside the Intrepid, but it would have been better as a "mini-MSR". Rear hatch for cargo, walkthrough to the cockpit, pilot controlled turret at the top, and some living\enginnering space. Didn't need to be large. My biggest issue with the Intrepid was trying to hit anything with that offset gun. It was different with the larger variants when engaging a large ship, but I found dog-fighting a Mustang was challenging because the aim was off center.
People tend to value roleplay elements or some hypothetical mechanics that will hypothetically come in some hypothetical future patch (like the need for suit lockers or a kitchen). 100 series is the best starter ship here and now - beautiful, fast, agile, cheap, has a bed, has enough space to carry several boxes for a delivery mission.
I think some ships like the mustangs/aurora/reliants possibly the titan may need MK2 versions to do a gold pass on them. The mustangs/aurora simply don't have enough internal volume to add what appears to be the desired level of starter stuff they are moving towards. I think we can look at the cutter, sulyen, intrepid for what they want starters to be going forward and the mustang and aurora are simply not capable of getting there. The titans/reliants are going to need a lot of work to add components/suit lockers and other starter type amenities. Probably can do it with the existing hulls but it is going to cost them a fair bit of cargo space to accomplish. I sort of expect there to be a "starter" pices that is basically like the medical pices but with a living quarter instead of the med bed/medical stuff. Basically like a tiny rambler small living area 2 scu or so of cargo since it won't need the quarantine air lock thing.
I'd say the Mustangs/Auroras are pretty much perfect for the roles they inhabit. That being, "Citizen's first light fighter". Where they both have different strengths and weaknesses considering the Mustang is supposed to be the direct competitor to the Aurora, being more maneuverable in exchange for less survivability (Auroras are supposed to be armored space bricks), and having greater firepower in exchange for extended mission capabilities (No bed). However, the Auroras will also have the disadvantage of not having a cargo hold on all models unlike the Mustangs (Only the CL will keep the 6SCU grid, which can be attached to the other models but you have to buy it separately). Although on the upside, the Aurora's dedicated VTOL fans will allow it to hover over a location for an extended period of time with either very little or no fuel burn, as opposed to the Mustang which will have to use it's MAVs to hover, resulting in constant overheating and premature wear. And as far as I am aware, the Aurora's doors are still supposed to double as universal docking ports, though we'll have to wait on ship-to-ship docking to see how that plays out, it's something. This all leads me to believe that the Aurora will be more of a scout used on extended patrols that can fight if it has to, while the Mustang will be the opposite, being a fighter that can be used as a scout on shorter patrols. That being said however, the Reliants definitely need some love, I see what they were going for, being effectively a Kei truck kind of thing, but those two big engines should definately be able to give her some good speed and acceleration. Maybe give it a retractable tractor beam like the Zeus CL has, or a weapon rack on one of the walls of the cargo hold. Something basic that enhances the ship, without overdoing it.
@@vokundodinok5992 I can see keeping mustangs and aurora as intro light fighters but they don't really fit what appears to be the role of starter ships and are too small to really retrofit into it. Over time it looks like their starters basically can dabble in most basic game play loops/has some cargo space/living quarter with bed/suit locker/weapon locker. Keeping mustangs as a cheap easily available option to flex into if once you get started you want something more combat oriented. Basically if you look at the most recent starters the cutter, sulyen, intrepid it is pretty clear the direction they are moving for starters going forward.
When I see comments about people loving the Intrepid, I get it. I still don't like how it looks, but I can understand why it exists. For me, the ship that finally drove me into this rabbit hole was the original Cutter, and this was *after* I had seen The Pilot's video on the Avenger Titan a few times. I can imagine the Intrepid doing the same for Crusader fans and some people who can appreciate its benefits while deciding that coping with its weaknesses is a good compromise.
While you mentioned it briefly by calling it a long range ship, one thing I'm not seeing anyone talking about with the Intrepid is its QT fuel capacity. It has a higher QT fuel capacity than any other ship in the $45-$70 price range (standalone price). This is going to be important in larger systems with fewer available fuel stops.
I agree with what you're saying, but the Cutter Rambler at $50 standalone has 1.5 scu of QT fuel, which is more than the Intrepid at $65. Also, keep in mind CIG likes to tweak QT fuel values for ships all the time, and since an increased fuel capacity isn't mentioned in the description we don't really know how much it will have in the future.
I think one solution for the older starter ships could just be to update them, but in a way that is more interactive and only available for lower tier (starter class ships). In a way that means you need to fly the standard ship to a specific place in the universe for it to be upgraded with the necessary components, using in game money only. Let's take the 100 series, maybe I can get it upgraded to have 1 level better shields and guns, perhaps the cargo hold on a 135c could be extended to the whole rear of the ship, combining that with the small internal space that already exists. Theres a lot of possibilities for customisation which could be labelled as some kind of black market mod shop, deep in space where the authorites kind of just leave it alone. This could help keep starters relevant for longer and can allow for more individualism among the PU.
ITs obvious the intrepid is an entry level smuggler and its hold will be shielded like the MSR in the future. This will also give it its own niche. Besides that its interior is easily the nicest we ve seen in a starter. For FPS looting, boxes are very good to drop down and instantly loot bodies. Getting alot of mileage out of mine with an all stealth component build, it drops off radar easily.
i was hoping for a "ha ha jk" then credits roll two seconds into the vid. the walkaround demo of starter ships for new players is genius though, would have the same euphoria you get from picking out a new car off the lot
I just tried to impulse CCU my 9 year old Reliant Kore for the Intrepid because of the Interior and cargo capacity. Impossible too do of course because they are both priced the same. But it really is a solid example of how far the game has come.. from a no frills 2 seater B-wing cargo scarab to best looking house on VTOL thrusters in the verse
In a vacuum, the Intrepid is exactly what I picture when you say Starter Ship. It's got 1 of each component (including weapon), all the basic amenities and a well-thought out compact layout. The problem is ofcourse that legacy starters exist. And while I agree with the point that the great Avenger doesn't have these ameneties in the interior, I feel like they still could've done something extra with the Intrepid. An extra S1 shield for a ship that size is pretty much mandatory. Weapon aside, I feel like the cargo capacity is too low. They could widen the starboard cargo lift (reducing the bench's size in the living quarters) for 12 SCU max, of better yet, make is so that we can stack boxes 2 high (which looks like it would be possible if not for the cargo hatch) for 16 SCU (or 24 when implementing both changes). This will be an excellent cargo capacity for a ship this size, without necessarily classing it as a hauler specific starter.
My initial reaction to the intrepid's exterior was ambivalence at best, but the more I look at it, the more it's grown on me. I'm probably going to pick one up as another runabout option to go along with my Nomad. As a side note, the Q&A says that the Intrepid is not _designed_ to hold ground vehicles, that is not the same thing as saying it _can't_ hold them. That said, I personally will not try to cram something into the ship's cargo bay, both for the potential physics-related drama and for the fact that I prefer to have my cargo space be actually available.
The Titan was my "first love." The first ship I flew that really clicked when I started playing. It's the first ship I buy in game -- at least it was before it cost 1.5 million. I've twice upgraded a ship to the Titan and twice upgraded to something else shortly thereafter. I admittedly am a sucker for that new ship smell. The Titan is the best starter, specs wise. But there's just something so spartan and boring living in it. When I tried out the Intrepid it was love at first sight. It's zippy and damn that interior is nice. Every ship doesn't have to be the meta. Yes the Intrepid is expensive, but you are paying for that fine interior -- the best in any starter. That said, it definitely needed that size 4 weapon, and honestly I think it would benefit from a second shield. I like that we have choices. People who want to min-max can buy the titan. People who want to enjoy the game for the space ships, we have options. It's kind of like when you talk about jobs. Some jobs pay better and have better benefits. But if they have shitty work-life balance, is it worth it? The Intrepid has better work-life balance than the Titan.
The Intrepid having an engineering console isn't discussed nearly enough. We don't know enough about engineering gameplay and how significant it is, but being able to do engineering anywhere on the fly, instead of having to go to a station/LZ, can potentially be a HUGE benefit. Also, we're too used to discussing ship performance at prime performance, but as the game progresses features like degradation, repair, insurance, etc will be added and early convenience features like hangars immediately repairing ship to full health and being able to reclaim ships any time, and resets every patch, etc are also going away. Our way of judging ship value is also going to change then. And I agree there's more to ships than stats.
Great video as always. And I personally like the intrepid, though I won't get one since I already have ships that would serve its purpose. Would be a good choice for a new player who likes the crusader style. Also, one discrepancy I would like to point out in the video, and this is probably just me misunderstanding your statement; the 135c doesn't have an onboard refinery, but instead the Origins AIR system, which technically is an onboard refinery in a sense, in reality its just a powerful fuel scoop, and the AIR system is actually used across all 100i variants.
In my opinion a starter ship needs to enable the player to try most available basic gameloops, they clearly don’t have to be equally good at each - they should lean in different directions, being better or worse in some aspects of the game, while offering advantages in others. So you can experience quite everything as a new starting player, while already being able to decide a direction you maybe want to lean on a little bit in when you start.
I know they don't want multi-role but a starter ship being a multi-role is SO important because it allows newer players to test out different things and it gives CIG less work they don't need to make 15 different starter ships all specialized into one thing it's redundant when it's just a STARTER
I too would like to see it have a S2 shield. And even though they gave it a single S4 weapon, it's more for show than effectiveness. Coupled with only 2 S1 missiles are a little meager as well. Could have stayed at like 4 S1 missiles and shifted the cockpit over to center and gave it just 2 S3 on either side and I would've been pleased. I still bought this ship and love most of its capabilities, and would still like to see Crusader make a proper light to medium fighter as well.
having a 100i as a cargo hauler is a very nice because i kept leaving my doors open and my ship gets hijacked and i can just claim it from a platinum bay terminal lol
The best part about this ship IMO is that it's worth $65 and with the iae sale the game package is $68 and comes with LTI. I was able to buy this for 68, and upgrade to the Nomad for 15 for a total of $83 for a Nomad game package with lifetime insurance, now that's value 😊
This starter package gave me a few good things: Another character slot when 1.0 is out An LTI token i can build another CCU chain on 20.000 UEC Starting money for that additional character slot So all in all worth the money for me 😊
The Titan is a great ship. That's very much agreed upon. However, I think people are completely ignoring that they're aiming for a good deal of realism with how much of the game functions. I can't be the only person who looks for a starter/daily as I do a car, but also maybe as an apartment. Can it get me where I'm going? Can I carry some stuff in it? Does it look nice? Titan checks out. Okay, now... Can I live in it? Can I carry weapons? Armor? Travel a bit? Wash up? Intrepid checks those extra boxes. Plus, you can't tell me Crusader engines aren't one of the best sounds. To me, the Titan looks nice, and it's a great little "Git-r-done" multi-role. You can even carry a Pulse, which is awesome. But it's not a livable ship. You get in, do a job, and go home. The Intrepid can do pretty much all the same things, just maybe not so much combat. The big difference is, you get in, do the job, and... You are home. Makes me wonder how many people have some ugly car in real life just because it serves the specific function they use it for... Forgot the price argument. Intrepid is new. It's had the newer functions added to it, which requires more work to get it all sorted out. Titan... Please. PLEASE give me an actual button to open the ramp and not just a floating F.
I like the "idea" behind the Intrepid, but for a starter... plus vs minus: YES: - box missions (check) - light trade (check) - light hauling (check) - runabout for hand mining, hand salvage, cave missons, etc. (check) BUT: - runabout for bunkers (only if you do the "protect site" ones bc you can't blow up turrets or have a vehicle) - mercenary ship missions like ERT (not really unless very skilled pilot) - bounty ship missions or certifications (not really unless very skilled pilot) - PvP (not really unless very skilled pilot vs poor pilot in another Intrepid) The main issue with the Intrepid is that it either needs another shield OR it needs another gun (2s3 specialized mount perhaps?) *BUT NOT BOTH because it has such an upgraded interior. Especially for the pledge price. Canuck :)
upgraded from the titan because i wanted a refreshing experience with a ship, give it a couple more guns maybe on the wings or they could deploy from the top or bottom idk, i also agree the shields need to be upsized by one, either way im going to be buy another titan when the prison cells are available for purchase in game for bounty hunting
im still an FNG, but heres my opinion on the Interprid. Its like a Cutter+ What do i mean by that? its all in one package for newbies that has all the amenities your going to need that are absent from old ships. It separated cargo from living quarters via split tank cargo. Its essentially a cutter in a bigger frame and maybe its me being bad, but it feels more stable when manuvering and less prone to rocking like a cutter in VTOL mode. I like it, i hate it, i look at my cutter and cant help compare it. The biggest *buyers remorse for cutter* included issue with Interprid is how clean it feels. A Cutter for example feels like your first car and heck you may have stashed a moonshine bottle in the netting from daymar. This feels corporate like an assigned work vehicle.....or new car.
They really should give it about 2 more feet of clearance for cargo. Having flown a Titan for years, I really like having this. For a guy like me that mostly runs bunker missions, it's a great ship to just roam around doing those.
Nomad ❤ = 3 size 3 weapons + 26 or 24 scu of cargo + can load ROC to mine + jumps long distances + bed and kitchen and toilet For a starter ship it's the best from my point of view
It's a good ship... it's size makes people compare it to smallish medium ships... but compared to starters, it's very good in terms of capacity and amenities, if not weapons :)
It's like Crusader took the hab of the Cutter Rambler and cargo space of the Avenger Titan and made an in-between. But I agree with most people, the price point shouldn't be that high. That doesn't make sense. It's a proper starter starter and should be priced as such.
The problem is that the intrepid is a ship intended for uninformed buyers, because an informed buyer would never buy the ship. For a classy (and custom) interior (with the same core amenities) better dps, better cargo, more gameloops, and a utility hardpoint we have the 315p for 5$ less. For 5$ more we get the titan, with the same cargo space, 2 entrances, much better damage, and a cargo bay that can ferry a vehicle. For 10$ more you can get the nomad, better in EVERY way besides the vulnerable open air cargo. For 2 less scu you get the syulen, better dps, equal in combat due to size, but requires comfort with awkward landings. It's the worst in its category of enhanced starter ships in EVERY metric.
I consider the titan more for people who are into the space combat, for that it's a good starter ship. This startership is more for the people who want that home away from home, but in startership format, people who like to do infantry combat or go out and explore on foot (once that's a thing) especailly since you have a suit locker so you can bring a heavier piece of armor once you can't get into seats with heavy armor anymore. So in that sense yes it doesn't have directly the same firepower, but it has many other advantages the titan doesn't have. People seem to forget that the game is supposed to have activities for in space, on foot, in vehicles, non-combat, the titan isn't everything. Otherwise why would we have medical ships? Just don't die? You don't hear people say "just get an M2 instead of a hull-C" because it has more firepower and tankiness, don't understand why people try to make that argument here.
The entire notion of Control Surfaces as CIG have described are completely bonkers to me. There's no reason ships shouldn't be able to hover stably or fly slowly without specially-dedicated VTOL thrusters or control surfaces. In fact, the only valid purpose for control surfaces is for better control authority at high speeds - exactly the opposite of what they intend for them - allowing high-maneuverability fighter types to retain high maneuverability at high atmospheric speeds. Unfortunately, we also currently lack those high speeds in atmosphere, both in absolute due to drag modelling and in combat due to the dumpster fire of Master Modes.
I do rather enjoy this style of ship review/deep dive. Feels kinda like Morph's Architect Reviews series, but with an eye to features and player experience. Please keep em up 👍
This ship feels like you could stuff both cargo lanes with 4 scu boxes and just run bunkers+loot. Needs either more/bigger guns or a better shield for any ship combat though.
Ships should definitely have some "standard design features" to aim for IMO. Much like cars have to adhere to certain safeties and comforts, so should all (all) ships. Right now the ships can be easily divided into Tiers of usefulness, quality. They will have a long list of design updates for older ships, even if they deliberately limit their ability of making better designed ships now and the future.
Another crucial factor is whether it can be spawned at the Platinum Bay pads, planetside. Which, from memory, only the Pisces and Hull-A can right now?
I have been waiting for a Crusader starter for a while now and this is it. It is a premium starter, granted, but for me it's a home away from home that fits with my vibe a lot better than the Titan, which is just a combat platform with a bed and some cargo space. Yes, the ship is an acquired taste, and it looks a little weird. I could say the same thing about the Nomad, which I absolutely despise, but some people love. The shield is weak, and with less weapons than a Titan, I think we should get a larger generator or two if possible. There are issues with the interior as space is used quite poorly in the back... I'm thinking move the engineering terminal and components to one side and make that entire area a cargo bay that drops down with 10 SCUs instead of 8. That with the shield strength gives this little ship the tankiness to avoid pirates and the cargo to warrant actually running small loads. Even with a size four, it's better to run rather than fight. Gives the Intrepid a more robust blockade runner role that justifies the price tag. You don't want that? Go with the smaller cargo ships like the cutter that is a lot riskier to use.
I really dont think we should be worrying about new ships when there are still so many still sitting in concept, plus all the gold standards. Make a poll on if people prefer buying new ships at full price, that have nothing to fit into. Or have an 'Upgrade' option, at half the price, for bringing old models into their FULLY realised state!
I can't wait for more Alien starter ships Banu, and AOPA should be next. I agree with the older starter ships needing polish passes, but I beleive these newer starters are the foundation so that CIG can work on the older ships with ease.
the intrepid is probably my new fav starter looks wise its weird but its got a bed for logouts and its got a sink toilet and sink and shower for when hygiene comes into play a little kitchen for food prep and table to eat fridge and a weapons locker and storage and my favorite thing about it 1.2 scu of quantum fuel so it travels farther then most other smaller ships its got the same gas tank as a c1 for goodness sake and it has 8 scu of cargo and its only down side if ya can call it that is 1 size 4 gun with 2 size 1 missiles and 1 size 1 shield should have 2 size 1 shields but i digress. while under gunned if your looking for weapons in the first place starters are not the ships your looking for but 1 size 4 is nice enough for my style of play I'm more of a explorer type I am extra hyped for pyro and all ill be able to go and do but yea simply put the best starter in my opinion checks all my boxes for needs and wants
Thanks for the vid. Yes it costs a bit more than the Avenger, but the Avenger is fo another time. The Interpid has a sofisticated interieor, the Avenger doesn't and if the Avenger gets its Goldpass it will lose so of its charm, because most of the components will be in the Back, where you cant reach all of them if cargo is loaded. And don't forget, that the quantity of shild generators ared fix. Maybe the Interpid gains one, maybe the Avenger loses one. You never know.
2 thoughts: 1. even though the price is a bit high on the Nomad, I would still count it as a starter, because while it offers a lot of cargo space, it's not so much that I would consider it to be a viable profession starter for hauling, it's small enough for a single person to control it completely, and it's versatile enough to allow new players access to a number of game loops. 2. yes the Intrepid is better than people give it credit for and not every starter has to outshine earlier starters, but it happens to be so close in price to the Avenger that CIG has to put up with people comparing those two ships in particular. And if we compare those two, we can easily see that the Avenger is sturdier than the Intrepid, has more weapons with a higher total DPS output, is smaller and thus harder to hit, has the same 8 SCU of cargo capacity, has - due ot the cargo bay being a single area rather than seperated into two - more room for vehicles, and still provides a living space as well. The price tag in this case is just not reasonable. Those ships will compete with each other and if the Intrepid isn't better in anything else but style, then it needs a more combative price tag, otherwise it will get overlooked as a viable contender for the starter role. No one will argue that neither the Cutter, nor the Mustang or the Aurora come close to the Avenger, but since all of them are priced way lower than the Avenger, they are still viable to buy as game entry ships. The Intrepid is a viable ship for the warbond price, but not for the regular one unfortunately.
Before we know it - just like all the other ships that are an outrage and an insult and the final straw --- this ship will be available for in game currency. If price was the only factor or even a Major factor --- nobody would ever buy or fly a Titan, Cutter, Nomad, Cutty Black or Suylen because the Mustang and the Aurora are cheaper .. why spend thousands of extra in game space bucks when i can buy a cheaper ship
@@lights4bre890 While true, this ship is still categorized as a starter and is thus intended to basically be "babies first space ship". It's what the community has dubed a "premium starter" in comparison to the regular starters which are the Aurora and the Mustang, and as such it's less of an upgrade option than the profession starters (Arrow/Gladius, Vulture, Prospector, Hull A, Spirit E1, Freelancer/Cutlass Black, etc.) Sure, some players might still choose to transition into these ships for one reason or the other, but generally you'll either buy a regular starter, or a premium one, and then have to choose which one to get. And in that category you'll have the Pisces vs the Cutter on the cheaper end, meaning you can go comfort vs size, the Avenger vs the Intrepid in the medium range, meaning you choose between "the best starter" and a slighly more expensive ship with slightly more comfortable living space, and the Syulen vs the Nomad, meaning you choose between Alien Tax and an extensive cargo loader with pretty high defense. Some people want their first ships to be slightly more viable for slightly longer and are willing to spend a bit more money on an easier start, but the way the Intrepid is set up currently, there's no reason for anyone to choose it over the Avenger after the Warbond option will be gone.
@@animusnocturnus7131 Then it will be self - levelling.. you wont see anybody flying the Intrepid - they will just fly cheaper or better ships. I wish this ship existed back when i was taking my 1st steps in a Aurora. There is no comparison.
@@lights4bre890 Are you sure you would have bought it at about twice the Auroras price? And yes, it'll probably not be a very popular ship down the line, unless changes to its stats and/or the way the game works and/or the price of other starter ships will make it way more useful for its price down the line. But that's exactly the point. It could be way more famous if the non-warbond price was about 10 bucks lower.
@@animusnocturnus7131 If price was everything - nobody would fly the cutter , nomad, suylen, 100i, cutty black, or titan .. Mustangs and Auroras cost less
I really hope the Aurora and Mustang line of ships will get some love... I'd love to keep an Aurora just as a backup boat, they look awesome, but they are bugged (cargo is useless) and also just neglected in general by CIG.
It'll be fine for a new players who wants to try all the things. As soon as they find something they want to do, this ship won't be able to do it and will be useless, even though it's twice the size of ships that can do far more.
I love it the way it is. All of the talk about it not being better than the Avenger is B.S. When the Cutter came out I didn't hear anyone complaining about it not being as good as an Avenger. The funny thing is, I love this design, but have a lot of problems with the Avenger. The Avenger looks like a mini shuttle that has been bent in every direction to create as much drag as possible, which drives me nuts. But I don't complain about that because I know many people like that about it. Having said that, I do own an Avenger as well, because it's fun to fly too. ;)
Personally i would have given the Intrepid two size 2 or 3 guns stacked vertically in the same space as the single instead, allowing to keep the asymmetry
What's funny is how many people seem to think every ship needs to be a meta, needs to be the best at something. That simply isn't how "multiple companies offering their versions of an offering into a vehicle category" ...just like how the car market works irl. Is every car on the market the best optimization of price for performance in a goal? Or is it 99% about what a person *likes?* Variety in how a person feels about the ship is *far* more important.
Compared to the 100i this feels more like a flying home instead of a space jet with a bed, it reminds me of a homey ship like the nomad, not everything is about space combat.
Same with the 890J and Polaris, Polaris is around 750 and 890J is 950, it’s more just preference and “luxury”
Exactly this, like if it was prices more like the cutter it would have made sense, cause it’s a competitor to that one and not the titan, as it’s being priced as.
@@AlexeiX1 Yeah, here's the lineup I've come up with talking to people:
-The Avenger does combat a lot better, transport a little better thanks to having a unified hold instead of the sleds, and personal amenities worse.
Then don't buy it
A good starter ship needs to provide the player with the most varied means as possible to engage in game loops and make that early cash. It will never be all the gameloops, but if it can cover 2 or 3 its good enough. Usually that would mean the two game loops that are core - combat and cargo transport - as these two skills usually link to other loops in the future.
Agreed
a titan is better in every way and cheaper
Intrepid is nice, but Cutter's still my top pick. Gotta love me the rusty camper van aesthetic.
We need a starter for "mechanical proffesion" jobs/gameplay. Like salvaging, and in the future repair/crafting. I wouldn't mind a space pickup truck with a welder in the bed. We don't even have a starter mining ship yet, which i think would be helpful.
@jaykay5838 so I guess you don't consider the Prospector a starter mining ship?
Nomad is the best for me
It's not a starter though.
You goobers don't Nomad? Sheesh... Consolidated Outland Nomad FTW. I love my Taurus, but I break out the Nomad when I'm feeling roguish.
SpaceTomatoe does not get enough credit for the epic music he chooses for these amazing videos.
This might be "fixed" when the titan gets a rework and gets a wet tissue shield and it's guns swapped out for transmitters that broadcast foul language to it's attackers
It happened to the cutty, and I don't think it will be the last
@@gunslingerspartan What happened to the cutty?
@@johnboyd9713 yeah but the s2 shields where pretty core to the cutty, now it just falls apart in combat
I love that there is more variety! And people who are flying it are saying great things.
It can't beat the Titan in any metric performance wise, but it's more cozy, the interior is better. It should have been at worse priced the same, but it's not
Except fuel and QT fuel
No toilet I think in the titan?
@@QuotidianStupidity yeah no toilet. It needs a gold pass for sure.
@@edwarddomenico9601 you think they will add one?
It’s pretty much the only downside it has
@@QuotidianStupidity I would hope so.
I don’t like the looks. I don’t like the price.
It will not join my crusader focused fleet.
How do we know it couldn’t fit in the cargo lifts in the back? It’s not like we have specifics for the grav cart yet
The construction grav cart when closed appears to have the same dimensions as a 2scu container, it should fit in the Intrepid.
This was a great departure from your normal content. You and Morph are my go-to Star Citizen channels
I will never consume anything other than cruz. I'm still mad that CR lied when he said food/drink would only ever be optional.
Just my 2c.
This video sums up everything that makes me genuinely really enjoy my intrepid as a daily driver.

Appreciate the Reliant footage. Always good to see it acknowledged among staters, even if it's a relic.
NO! Keep the cockpit and gun apart, i have no need of more guns placed in my field of vision and it's blinding muzzle flashes.
Good video, very professional!
I think the Intrepid was also planned as a starter to launch alongside engineering in 4.0 before the features were delayed
Not for me. It's a nice looking ship and does the job well but it's too clean.
@@NayrAnur it seems like it was designed with decoration in mind, to bad that’s not a thing on the ships.
The Avenger is also slated for modularity as it's Q&A stated many years ago.
The titan is great to work a planet and it's moons. Maybe cross a small system like Stanton. The intrepid will be better if you want to venture further. I think it compares more to the cutter lineup and is a step up from that. Since they have longer range than the titans and nomads.
I picked it up to practice engineering at a low cost when it's released. Will be a great trainer for introducing friends to the game.
And it looks like a boring ol real life jet plane that someone just claims can go into space. Yawn.
@@callsigngrimdoll intrepid looks like a cross of a plastic toy water gun and 2-headed ogre from WOW. That's better)
A very good review
The Aurora and Sylen have also stairs and the Cutter, Pisces, Titan and Reliant have a ramp..
I am leaning towards Cutter more and more. (325 driver)
People will only start talking about this if and when it starts to prove itself over time. I personally think it's a big deal.
100% agree. It is the best long range starter
That's also if they don't nerf it for next time they release a new starter ship...
I enjoyed this video and would appreciate more reviews like this.
Actually flying it makes a difference. I'm now tempted by it.
Nicely done.
The Intrepid is awesome. I'm very happy with mine.
What is your opinion on the nerfs of the 400i? And isn't the suylen and 300i a starter to?
Very well presented Tomato!
having a 100i as a cargo hauler is a very nice because i kept leaving my doors open and my ship gets hijacked and i can just claim it from a platinum bay terminal lol
The best part about this ship IMO is that it's worth $65 and with the iae sale the game package is $68 and comes with LTI.
I was able to buy this for 68, and upgrade to the Nomad for 15 for a total of $83 for a Nomad game package with lifetime insurance, now that's value 😊
This starter package gave me a few good things:
Another character slot when 1.0 is out
An LTI token i can build another CCU chain on
20.000 UEC Starting money for that additional character slot
So all in all worth the money for me 😊
The Titan is a great ship.
I like the "idea" behind the Intrepid, but for a starter... plus vs minus:
YES:
- box missions (check)
- light trade (check)
- light hauling (check)
- runabout for hand mining, hand salvage, cave missons, etc. (check)
BUT:
- runabout for bunkers (only if you do the "protect site" ones bc you can't blow up turrets or have a vehicle)
- mercenary ship missions like ERT (not really unless very skilled pilot)
- bounty ship missions or certifications (not really unless very skilled pilot)
- PvP (not really unless very skilled pilot vs poor pilot in another Intrepid)
The main issue with the Intrepid is that it either needs another shield OR it needs another gun (2s3 specialized mount perhaps?) *BUT NOT BOTH because it has such an upgraded interior.
Not my starter. But you brought up a good point about variety in a menu of starters. It is kind of cool in that way
All the ship needs is an additional s1 shield. I think it is an excellent all rounder!
im still an FNG, but heres my opinion on the Interprid. This feels corporate like an assigned work vehicle.....or new car.
sidenote: i have yet to lose a box from delivery missions in interprid, cutter i lose them even on magnetic grid
They really should give it about 2 more feet of clearance for cargo. Having flown a Titan for years, I really like having this. For a guy like me that mostly runs bunker missions, it's a great ship to just roam around doing those.
Nomad ❤ = 3 size 3 weapons + 26 or 24 scu of cargo + can load ROC to mine + jumps long distances + bed and kitchen and toilet
For a starter ship it's the best from my point of view
I honestly like it, I get it’s an acquired taste but I think it’s kinda pretty
Its a unique offering in its class, which is why it's my daily.
I think star citizen needs to utilize a radar graph when designing these ships so they can easily identify what kind of ship to make
I can't wait for more Alien starter ships Banu, and AOPA should be next.
2 thoughts:
1. even though the price is a bit high on the Nomad, I would still count it as a starter, because while it offers a lot of cargo space, it's not so much that I would consider it to be a viable profession starter for hauling, it's small enough for a single person to control it completely, and it's versatile enough to allow new players access to a number of game loops.
2. yes the Intrepid is better than people give it credit for and not every starter has to outshine earlier starters, but it happens to be so close in price to the Avenger that CIG has to put up with people comparing those two ships in particular.
It's what the community has dubed a "premium starter" in comparison to the regular starters which are the Aurora and the Mustang, and as such it's less of an upgrade option than the profession starters (Arrow/Gladius, Vulture, Prospector, Hull A, Spirit E1, Freelancer/Cutlass Black, etc.)
Sure, some players might still choose to transition into these ships for one reason or the other, but generally you'll either buy a regular starter, or a premium one, and then have to choose which one to get.
Great take, my thoughts exactly.
Having said that, I do own an Avenger as well, because it's fun to fly too. ;)
A starter ship? This is a finisher ship! A transporter of Gods! The golden God!
Or is it 99% about what a person *likes?*
Variety in how a person feels about the ship is *far* more important.
Compared to the 100i this feels more like a flying home instead of a space jet with a bed, it reminds me of a homey ship like the nomad, not everything is about space combat.
