Andrew did a light gut of the rear only about 150lbs lighter which results in about .15s faster. Others that did a full gut 300-400lbs lighter are running .3-.4s faster into the high 8's
To me, that's unbelievable. I don't think it can be done with 500 lb of weight reduction alone. Best time out of a plaid without any weight reduction is about 9.2, 9.1. The plaid in the video literally shaved off over 4 tens. To put that in perspective, that would put like 5 car lengths to a 1,500 hp Bugatti Chiron! which does the 1/4 in 9.2 - 9.4.
which weighs >4300 lbs + driver -> ~ 4800 lbs stock + driver =>this plaid has much weight reduction - internal seating etc. removed - not 5 passenger - just the driver
Very low 4 sec 60-130 on this run, but this car is clearly very gutted. My factory weight S Plaid with the OEM 19" wheels goes 4.6 sec 60-130 on a decent run.
Tesla Model S Plaid - designed to get the kids to school on time! It's a nice family car. I'm hoping the Tesla Roadster 2 will have less storage room & be a quick car!😉
As a Plaid owner I would love this to be true, but "extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence" and this video is quite lacking. Again, I would love this to be true, don't shoot the messenger.

The difference is the amount of people who will own a Rimac will never exceed 150. Cost x Rarity make it essentially not a production vehicle. Even if you have the money you’ll never buy it. The plaid template is and will remain the go-to “quickest stock production car” for the foreseeable future. If a gutted plaid is only .2 seconds behind the Rimac, that means just taking the plaid power train and sticking it in a lighter chassis will put it over the Rimac even tho it has HALF the horsepower. And that’s because the plaid motor is beyond anything anyone else has at the moment.
@@CoreanKat exactly the 4680 cells can do 1500hp that’s going to power the roadster it’ll definitely weigh around what that gutted plaid is weighing around 4200lb so it’ll definitely be low 8s maybe even 7.9 at a prepped dragstrip
I love Tesla and I'm excited for electric cars but the obsession from non car and them crapping on gasoline car are on the same page at the people are are obsessed with supras
I’d love to see someone run 8s with a full interior. I have no interest in gutting my $100k car down to bare metal, but I’m all for weight reduction modifications and lightweight wheels / brakes.
This will happen soon as more people become familiar with the technology. I believe the existing battery packs are set up to supply upwards of 2000 amps at roughly 400V. The Plaid is pretty much designed to around 400V technology so that won't change. So more power would require more amperage. However, 2000 amps is likely right at the discharge C-rate limit for the existing cells (a limit that will increase with the 4680 cells). Those induction motors along with the 3-phase inverters could be modified to handle higher amperage but it would destroy the existing batteries. What is possible, and something we could see at drag strips in the near future, is a custom battery pack made from Lithium Titanate (LTO) cells using just enough cells for a 10kWh or 20kWh pack. LTO can dump at upwards of 20C which in a parallel configuration like 4P-170S using 40Ah cells could provide more than enough current to exceed 2000 amps. LTO cells have only 2.4V nominal cell voltage but have huge discharge capability and are virtually indestructible lasting for thousands of extremely high power (very fast) charge cycles. LTO does have a lower Energy Density so it will require more volume for any given capacity but could easily be made to work. LTO cells can even be used as super capacitors in certain applications.
@@Tron-Jockey what tends to be the energy density of LTO and can it handle as many cycles as lithium ion? From what I saw the 4680s give 20% more power for the volume.
@@miguellopez3392 oh the batteries new and old dominate in power density over a capacitor. But the caps will allow for higher C rates. Both charging and discharging. And also they weigh far far less
At this point capacitors will only hinder you. Poor energy density for their volume and not great ESR. The brief energy "spike" it would add is a fart in a windstorm. A rough calculation of a cap bank about the physical size of two regular car batteries (the 12V ones) would give around 15,000 Joules of energy. A quarter mile run for a stock Plaid will take about 5 MJ of power, so it would add 0.3% at best, assuming you could get all the energy of the cap out during the run. Plus, the voltage decay of a cap under discharge makes it drop below usable voltage very quickly (with a fair amount of energy still left) unless there is some sort of boost circuit, which would add weight and complexity.
That's a big claim! "fast in the world" should be backed up with proof as well as some context. How about a time slip, interior view, items removed, track owner confirmation, officially recognized event certificate. Not saying it didn't happen, just that such a claim shouldn't be made like an 8th grader saying "my dads car is the fastest car in town". My car is the stock twin to that and my best time is a 9.34 after more than 50 passes, so 8.77 seems like a reach.
Even a couple Dragy runs would tell a lot. Its really the trap speed that needs to be confirmed. If it really traps that fast, then the ETs are plausible.
Well you can see the trap speed and ET displayed on the track's public display in the video although the "1" in the 162.55 is obscured by a pole from the camera's perspective.
Oh, and this Plaid obviously has been gutted as that's all you can do to improve quarter mile times other than using light weight rims and the carbon ceramic brake kit. You can also use a light weight carbon fiber racing seat but the car won't be too happy about that.
@@logitech4873 no your braking power should match the vehicles power ie top speed and or acceleration.. Not many manufactures do this but the plaid should be recalled for breaking upgrades.

I have a question…how come you never see Tesla’s or any other EVs roll racing down in Texas…or any where else….just wondering…seems there are plenty of ice cars kicking ass at this…but no EVs….
The people that buy high-end EV’s tend not to be young street racers. They tend to be upper middle class white collar workers age 40+ and not interested in street racing, although they might punch it at a stop light from time to time. But with that said, there are a few RUclips channels featuring street races of Teslas vs ICE cars. I just watched one the other day of a roll race between a modded Audi TTRS vs. a Tesla Plaid.

The Rimac Nevera is the world's fastest 1/4 mile (8.58) seconds
The difference is the amount of people who will own a Rimac will never exceed 150. Cost x Rarity make it essentially not a production vehicle. Even if you have the money you’ll never buy it. The plaid template is and will remain the go-to “quickest stock production car” for the foreseeable future. If a gutted plaid is only .2 seconds behind the Rimac, that means just taking the plaid power train and sticking it in a lighter chassis will put it over the Rimac even tho it has HALF the horsepower. why don't they drop some battery weight for some capacitors in a "drag pack"
And also they weigh far far less
would probably work but only for a few runs if you make capacitars only
At this point capacitors will only hinder you.

The results were quite interesting.
Most EV owners are responsible and avoid endangering the lives of individuals and families using the road and obeying traffic laws, unlike street racers who don’t care about others or the rule of law.
That was the most boring 8 second pass I've ever seen

Watching an EV quietly make great times isn't as visceral... it's better tho.
