Really enjoyed this one, I had forgotten about this movie, I never saw it but now I want to, never knew it was based on a real story. I remember this was a heavily talked about movie, Tom cruise was taken more seriously here . I think the shogun are an amazing story by themselves, once again fact is sometimes better than fiction. Thank you as always for the lunchtime treat, I definitely want to see this movie now!

Very interesting and enjoyable! I hadn't watched the film/movie, partly because I'd assumed it was a "Tom Cruise" vehicle. I'd imagined it loosely based on a successful novel. So your video has made "The Last Samurai" much more interesting, and put it on my 'worth watching' list! I hope the film/movie distributor pays you accordingly 🤔. I liked your portrayal of the French militaries attitude to Brunet. It's satisfying and amusing that Brunet was operating with a status independent of the French military, yet he was (discretely) welcomed back. It reminded me of the start of every episode of the TV series "Mission Impossible" after the mission was described on audio tape, it'd say: _"As always, should you or any of your IM Force be caught or killed, the Secretary will disavow any knowledge of your actions"._ Pretty much the official position of the French military to Brunet. I wonder if Tom Cruise derives as much joy from irony as I, when he is the link creating the joke?
    Best Wishes. ☮
Your 'appropriate dress' code is always a pleasing detail. I am very impressed with your 'Napoleonic Hussars' jacket. However, and I mean no harm, but I was instantly reminded of the similar 'Michael Jackson jacket'. I imagine MJ's 'stylist' choose, or made, it to look like a historical 'Napoleonic Hussars' uniform jacket. I can't find a YT link, so I'll post this instead:
the lead singer of this cover pays homage to the jacket in this video covering an MJ song ①:
_Dirty Loops & Cory Wong - "Thriller"_ ruclips.net/video/m34byl2BT1o/видео.html He appears in the first 20 seconds, so you don't need to bear the music for long (though the horn section are superb, and the video is technically very sneaky; the horn section and guitarist recorded their video and audio in the USA _after_ the bassist, drummer and singer/keyboard player recorded their parts in Sweden).
① the song was written by Rod Temperton, a British song writer.

Thank you! Very nice parrallel with Mission Impossible. I'd recommend The Last Samurai, it's a beautiful film, quite poetic and Tom Cruise isn't too over the top. My hussar jacket is actually very similar to the one worn by Jimi Hendrix, so you had the right idea :) I've just listened to the video, it's very nice with a very pleasant groovy touch. Perfect to start the weekend! All the best from Lyon

Very much enjoyed this film back around 2004, but it was great to hear your breakdown of how things came about during this era. I notice that you often employ military objects and dress during your videos, are you a collector of memorabilia?

Thank you! I'm not a collector, but I like to buy myself an item from time to time and it makes me feel more immersed in the subject I'm talking about

It's one of my favourite historical movies. I don't know what they thought on him, probably they must have had a tremendous respect for him, the same he had for they. Thank you bro!

Van Gogh should have been jealous of Brunet who loved painting Japan In water-colours. (a tip from Tokyo)

Wow what a great story and video! Brunet looked every bit the Hollywood action hero. It seems only France would tolerate...no embrace an insubordinate officer in a "matter of honor" like this. Their willingness to get behind a giant fiction and lie on his behalf to the world is appaling and admirable at the same time. I wonder if this a good illustration of why France after Napoleon would do some of the other quixotic and unrealistic things it did in it's foreign policy. I'm thinking about Mexico here. Just contrive some game of thrones fantasy and just dive right in? i'm sorry I was unaware of Brunet when I visited Père Lachaise in the early 80's. I would have gladly raised a glass of champagne in his honor. instead it was more smoking hashish in honor of Jim Morrison of the Doors. Ahh wasted youth.

I think your experience at Père Lachaise was the best possible! After Napoleon, France was chasing a prestige it had lost and trying to re-establish itself as a great power, hence adventures as lopsided as the expedition to Mexico. Thank you very much, I'm glad you enjoyed the video!
