"Gusty Garden Galaxy" (Super Mario Galaxy) LIVE Jazz Cover // J-MUSIC Pocket Band

- Our live cover of "Gusty Garden Galaxy/Wind Garden" from Super Mario Galaxy, originally composed by Mahito Yokota. This arrangement by Patrick Bartley. Recorded live at Black Cat LES in New York City on March 1, 2020.
We're very happy that our initial foray into the Super Mario Galaxy musical universe is the beautiful "Gusty Garden Galaxy", known as "Wind Garden" in Japan. I (Pat) admittedly never got to play this game, because I didn't own a Wii (I know, comments incoming), but we knew just how much this music meant to the Mario and VGM community in general, so we had to do some music from it. The biggest challenge with making this arrangement was somehow reducing an entire lush orchestral sound to just six instruments, but the easiest and most satisfying part was being able to witness the magic of these guys putting everything they've got into it! We hope you enjoy this take on an already gorgeous composition; and if this game is nostalgic for you, we hope you can relive some of those moments here as well.

Only a bit in, and I'm already blown away by Max's blending and sitting under the sax's sound (starting at 0:55). Absolutely STELLAR blending on Max's end; it's not every day that I actually have to focus on the trumpet to be able to hear it!
was gonna comment the same thing; i actually had to try and pick out the trumpets sound, compared to my experience playing that’s completely new

These guys are criminally under watched
Bruh this is crazy. Sax and accordion go so well together. Also the dynamic control and ability to just rip through solos without absolutely blaring is legit Coltrane reincarnated. As a drummer myself, I couldn't help but be impressed at how the drummer was so good at just staying out of the way. Nothing flashy, but kept time exquisitely with the bass and helped really set up the band for each next moment. My favourite type of drummer. Beautiful beautiful beautiful.

if you want smaller parts i think insaneinethrain's cover with both the gusty garden medley and its small part in video game medley movement 1 are both insane, as well as the part in freddegredde's mario medley sounds amazing as well =)

There's a difficult balance trying to make a song cover both faithful to the original while having your own twist to make it interesting, but you guys seem to manage it every time!

I had the good fortune to attend this session in person and loved everything about it. But I find myself returning to this piece in particular, which is as close to perfection as I can imagine. Can’t wait until you’re able to get together again and grace us with more of your music.
