Some folks consider this song and "You Really Got Me" as proto-punk, or just early intentional distorted sound. Ray Davies and The Kinks had a true punk attitude, before punk was even a thing.
Also both are considered to be one of the first "rock" songs .
The who also was pre punk
Great song by The Kinks
This song came out in *1 9 6 4 !* America 1st heard about The Beatles in January of that year, completely blowing away American youth with the new sounds. By the end of that year, The Kinks came out with "You Really Got Me" and then this one by the end of the year. No one had ever heard anything like their sound. While no one disputes the Beatles influence on music throughout the 1960's, it's arguable that The Kinks had an even greater impact. What you're hearing in ADAAOTN (& YRGM) is the 1st "Garage Band" sound that became everything Rock & Roll was known for thereafter. And just so you know, the song was less than 3 minutes long because ALL songs heard on the radio at that time, including the Beatles', was less than 3 minutes long. Short & sweet was all they had. If anyone had said back then that popular music played on the radio would be 5 minutes & longer by the end of the 1960's would have laughed hysterically at your silliness!
The Kinks had that garage band sound down pat.
I guess they would, since they were one of the bands that created it. After The Kinks, garage bands have tried to sound like they did.
@@MrDiddyDee No doubt. I wasn’t trying to put them down.✌🏻
From 1965, The Kinks may have been the first Rock Band to use what came to be known as a "Fuzz Tone" on a guitar. After they used it, it began popping up in songs by many Bands. It gave the guitar a "gritty" sound.
I believe Ray Davies experimented at home and cut his speakers with a knife.
@@edprzydatek8398: The story I heard is that it was Dave Davies, Ray's brother and the bands guitarist, that by accident smashed his speaker prior to this recording.
Oh yea British Invasion of the 60's they rocked!!
The Kinks catalog is quite substantial and very diverse. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1990. The long list of major artists who have covered their songs is absolutely amazing and their influence on modern music can't be overstated. Ray Davies is also in the Song Writers Hall of Fame and was knighted for his contribution to music. You Really Got Me is one of the few songs with a special Grammy for changing music forever and Waterloo Sunset is #7 on the Rolling Stone list of most beautiful pop songs of all time. You Really Got Me and All Day and All of the Night are standard length songs for the radio when they were produced. The Kinks have many deeper tracks. The Kinks were screwed by being banned from touring the US for 4 years at the height of their career. They nevertheless came back in the 70s and 80s and were once again a major act. Ray Davies wrote a hit West End musical about their journey which culminated in 2 sold out shows at Madison Square Garden. The musical won 4 Olivier's which is the British equivalent of the Tony.
Hey Chod! Now you're talking! THE KINKS!!!🔈🔉🔊🔊🔊🔊🔊🔊
PUNK Rock's first band. This is the sound they wanted. Raw.
What a jam! Never gets old.
Probably no other group ushered in the so-called modern (hard) rock sound more than the Kinks.
Happy to hear you say that because the music was much rawer at the time that's why it made it easier for us to play it and the garage and get a similar tone
We danced to this at every party and dance we went to in the late 60's...love it still. 💞💞
Dave Davies was solely responsible for the signature distorted power chord sound on the Kinks' first hit, "You Really Got Me". He achieved the sound by using a razor blade to slit the speaker cone on his Elpico amplifier, which he then ran through a larger Vox as a "pre-amp". This sound was one of the first mainstream appearances of distortion, which was to have a major influence on many later musicians, especially in heavy metal and punk rock.
Very catchy guitar riff.
A real sixties band. Great. I grew up in the sixties. The Kinks have great music. 💕💕💕🎸🎸👍👍
Oh and it was recorded with an intentionally damaged speaker. On the guitar. Gives it a unique sound
The original punk rockers!
This came out in AM Radio days... Had to keep songs 3 minutes or so to get that airplay. Studio execs knew this, and demanded it.
Love this song. Love The Kinks.
One of their classics is Celluloid Heroes. A great song about Hollywood.
My favourite Kink's song is the very laidback 'Sunny Afternoon'.
700 songs in their catalog- around the dial - I need you - holiday “live” - Artificial man - big sky - to the bone - dreams - alcohol “live” - pictures in the sand - rock n roll fantasy….etc
Great early rock band! They had a distinct and fabulous sound.
If the story is true the guitar sound was because he used an amp with a busted speaker to get that distortion. That is the stuff that can't be recreated. The short songs is because it had to fit on a 45 for radio play.
The kinks - i wanna fly like superman
Love the Kinks. I have been after you to do a reaction to one of my top 3 bans. They are called Fischer-Z. You can start with Remember Russia (1979) and dig through their 40 years of amazing, amazing songs. This band is pure class. Thx, Manny.
If you haven't done them yet "You Really Got Me" (covered by Van Halen) or "Waiting For You". totally different vibes, both from this time.
Back to the rocking 60's love it ❤️❤️💓
They have so many great songs. Apparently this song is a important writing wise its deceptively simple. But hugely influential
Just think how many guitar players were inspired by that riff and tone.
Back in their day most songs were radio friendly short songs of the 1960s. In the 1970s FM radio started up and they wanted to attract more listeners with stereo sound (as stereo recording was also just starting) and more groups were developing longer songs, which FM starting to broadcast. There was, back then, a real competition between AM and FM for listeners. There were some longer songs in the 1960s and earlier, but most often didn’t get the AM radio play, which is how they attracted listeners to buy their records.
Love The Kinks! They are possibly the most underrated influential band of all time. Now that is quite the statement. They most definitely can be considered the most important band to emerge in the 2nd half to the 20th century. One must realize how revolutionary Dave Davies distorted fuzz guitar sound was. Just think if he never took that razor blade to that speaker cone and got that dirty sound, how different would the music world be?
Remember guys this is 1964, no one has heard such an aggressive sound created by that distorted guitar before. Especially in a hit song before the Kinks " You Really Got Me" followed by "All of the Day and All of the Night". Bruce Springsteen said that it was the toughest sound he and his friends ever heard. He said it was what inspired him to learn guitar. His fellow bandmate Steven Van Zant said that sound was the equivalent of going from Black & White TV to Color or like a UFO landing in central park. Eddie & Alex Van Halen echo similar sentiments.
It is easy nowadays to dismiss the importance of distortion was to music in particular to Rock/Metal and Punk music. Everyone has grown accustomed to hearing distorted guitars in music, one may find it hard to fathom how powerful that sound was to virgin ears. It becomes virtually impossible that The Kinks musical DNA is not present in nearly every Rock, Metal, and Punk band that followed. It's time this band received their deserved recognition.
When I was growing up in this age, we called this a garage band. That is because everybody started their own band after hearing this!! Totally cool :) My brother and his buddies started one...such fun memories!
Whether the guitar distortion was created accidentally by dropping the amp or intentionally by puncturing the amps speaker depends on whether Ray Davies or Dave Davies is telling the truth.
Either way, they didn't fix it or get another amp, so they knew it was an good sound for what they were doing.
Guitar distortion wasn't anywhere near being new when the Kinks came out. Musicians were overdriveing small amps in the mid 40s to get a distorted sound.
In 1951 the guitarist in Ike Turner's band intentionally used an amp with a speaker that was accidentally damaged in "Rocket 88" because he liked the sound.
After that was when some guitarists started purposely damaging their speakers to get that sound. And when Link Wray did it and used it in his 1958 hit "Rumble" it became even more popular.
I started learning guitar in 1959 and by '61 I was jamming with a lot of musicians older than myself and met one who used a pencil to punch holes in his speaker cone to get that sound. I liked the sound, but at 13 years old I felt pretty lucky to even have a small amp and I wasn't about to do any irreversible damage to it just to get that one sound :)
This was The British Invasion which radically changed Rock Music.
"This Time Tomorrow" is another fantastic Kinks song....
This is a great iconic KINKS song. Thank you for revisiting British Invasion Groups. London 1963-1972 is the Renaissance of Rock - IMO. So much creativity, talent (many of these fine musician were self taught) and innovation. A truly magical time and place.
PLEASE, PLEASE - if you want raw, energetic R&B try this one from 1965/66
ruclips.net/video/viHnnex6OJQ/видео.html Whatcha Gonna Do About It Small Faces
This was their first single released when they still sounded like that Red hot little Mod R&B band that pack the clubs around London. Jimi Hendricks said this was his favorite guitar solo with the droning airplane sounds, Jimi LOVED "those little cats with the big sound"!
So much fuzzy guitar tone! This song was absolutely groundbreaking. It not only influenced countless artists who followed but also entire genres of music. Please check out their song “Destroyer!”
What an smash song from The Kinks! 1964 in den Charts and No. 2 in UK. Thank you!
Oh wow, The Kinks. Great band, so many fantastic tunes. Sir Ray Davies - an true English poet !! Impossible to chose a favourite Kinks song, but please delve into their music. You won't be sorry..
Davies is a very old Welsh surname though 😏
Love The Kinks, definitely part of the soundtrack of my life. When they go into the punk kind of discordance in this song, my husband and I usually say, “Everybody solo!” at the same time. Marriage.
Saw them in concert! They were great in concert too! They jammed out!
The best way to listen to this song is through a transistor radio.
Two of theirs I really, really like are "Set Me Free," a kind of dreamy, possessive ballad, and "Till the End of the Day," an all out rocker which, although not as iconic as "You Really Got Me," or "All Day and All Night," might be their best rocker. Both are worth checking out!
I saw them for the Low Budget tour. They had two fake palm trees and a sheet for a screen to project on. Low budget for sure. It was a great concert.
Radio length songs...50's 60's especially was about singles, radio play length. Even if you listen to the Beatles, all under 3. Albums started to become a focus, with album length songs in the later 60's and select the early 70's. But to get air play in the early-mid 60's it has to be short 2 1/2....or so
I 100% agree with your preference for hearing the original versions first!
The songs were short so the radio stations would play them.
ON A 45 RPM... EVEN EDDIE VAN HALEN MARVELED AT THE SOUND THAT THEY GOT.
Drummer Mick Avory tried out for the Stones when they were just starting 62,63.
Ray Davies...hot genius.
Much as I love their faster songs with the riffs I also love to hear their softer side like this song: Something Better Beginning…it has a dreamy quality that I really adore
It's like Garage Rock on steroids.
Early garage rock from 1964. A young studio musician, Jimmy Page played guitar on this track.
God bless you!
I am not remasterd either. 😂😂 Greetings from Holland. 🇳🇱🇳🇱🖐️🖐️
LIVING ON THE THIN LINE......... KINKS.... ITS ABOUT A COUNTRY IN DECLINE....deep
Chod, you should do an Original Audio vs. Remastered reaction.
They have done many great tunes that have been covered by other artists. Raw rock full of energy!
I’m not like everybody else - Live.
Both Ray and brother Dave made a huge contribution to rock and roll. They were blocked out by America for performing here for a while in the seven days cuz they wouldn't sign an agreement to be part of a union. Ray is a poet, equal to any other Englishmen.
I love your opinion about the way you react to the original recordings!👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
It may have been that each brother had the other's back, but the impression I always got from the band is that they will do damn well what they please, say what they want, and take it or leave it. Coulda been London, or the name, "Kinks" itself. A little kinky. Nirvana had some of that spirit, and their songs are necessarily musical masterpieces. In both cases, the words and meanings play a large part. Imagine critiquing Bob Dylan and disregarding all the lyrics. Some bands are poets first. Always good to know.
I agree that best to hear how it was heard before hearing the "improvements". Some are not really improvements. Kinks are raw. The first garage band to go global.
Cool guitar solo.
This is my favorite Kinks song.
"You Really Got Me" is my favorite Van Halen song. 😂
I always seem to mix up this song and "You Really Got Me".😅
Maybe you mean your favorite Van Halen cover of a Kinks classic. They also covered Where Have All the Good Times Gone.
@@bangmon1000 The record label made Ray write a song similar to YRGM for their next release. I think All Day and All of the Night is in some ways more refined but still very raw and edgy.
@@sjames1955 I was joking. Sarcasm. Hence, the emoji
@@sjames1955 Interesting. Glad there is a reason I am mixing them up. 😁
Love the Kinks, try watching a live vid, are bloody great live. 🌟
I appreciate your desire to listen too it authentically, what a lot of people seem to miss in my opinion is the medium , this music was mastered and designed to sound great coming out of a 4 inch speaker with a whizzer cone. Take the best current production you know of run it through a 4 watt amp into a single 6 inch speaker with whizzer cone the repeat with a track like this guess which will sound better. Like your attitude honesty and interesting choices. If you want too check out some lovely production Klaatu , lonliest of creatures, actually anything off of the Hope lp. Keep up the great work
The Kinks started out in the 1960s, but I remember them having hits in the1980s, such as, "Come Dancing" and Destroyer". Give those songs a listen. They are my personal favorites from them and "Father Christmas"

Yes. "Come Dancing" and "Don't Forget to Dance".
I like the album SLEEPWALKER . The Kinks made 24 studio albums and 6 live albums. not to mention solo albums. Thats a lot of music . Honestly speaking the only song that i dont like is lola. the radio stations burnt me out on it long ago.
I grew up with all the music from the British Invasion & The Mersybeat. The Kinks were huge & had a lot of hits. I especially love their music from the 60's & 70's. "You Really Got Me", "All Day & All Of The Night", "Set Me Free", "Tired Of Waiting for You", "A Well Respected Man", "Dedicated Follower Of Fashion", "Sunny Afternoon", "Dead End Street", "Waterloo Sunset", "Autumn Almanac", "Lola" etc.
Oh God I had this album....
Need to hear 'Celluloid Heroes' by The Kinks.
I'm with you. Hear what was successful at the time.
...and four years later The Doors ripped this song off with HELLO, I LOVE YOU - WON'T YOU TELL ME YOUR NAME. The Kinks figured they had better settle out-of-court, because they (Kinks) had already been banned by the musicians union, and The Doors were so popular they were considered 'untouchable' in the realm of copyright law. The Kinks really got a raw deal, starting with that union boycott, which limited their US exposure. Try and hit Ray Davies' (pronounced Davis) THE TOURIST, from his solo album Other People's Lives (2006). It's a gem. You'll hear the soft, AND the good old raw sound from the '60s.
Raw and simple
Now THAT'S Rock !
The Kinks were innovative for the time. Try '20th Century Man'...terrific tune, but not listed as one of their top songs. Live is good but the album cut is my favorite.
Muswell Hillbillies is just an awesome album.
Here is another thing to think about when doing the original versions, all music is produced. Which means there is a producer. When you listen to a remaster of a song, you are getting a new producer. I am all about the original versions myself.
I am sorry I am gonna rant a little bit about music for a second.
People talk about how today's music is not as good as it used to be, and I think it is because music is way over produced now. And, I think that happens with a lot of these remasters. People talk about dynamics in music, but they seem to neglect dynamics in producing the music. If you pay attention to most of the songs out today everything is at the same level. They tend to red line every instrument. This kills all the dynamics in producing, and you can really tell when you listen to an older song.
Music has two different dynamics. The actual music itself has its own dynamics, but the producing of the music and putting onto a format that can be played back has its own dynamics.
So to me, a remaster is almost spitting on the face of the original producer, even though, that producer is what helped make those songs what they are. Does that makes sense, or am I wrong?
given your liking for drummers, suggest a listen/watch of Feargal Sharkey's "A Good Heart" which features two women drummers and is also an excellent song. suggest the live vid
Chod...check out Wilson Pickett Funky Broadway! Funk supreme!!!
THE STRANGLERS DO A REALLY GOOD VERSION OF THIS SONG WITH A GREAT HORN SECTION THAT YOU SHOULD REVIEW.
The Kinks have a touch of comedy and sarcasm in a lot of there songs, they are not great musicians they just write fun songs. Well Respected Man, Dedicated Follower of Fashion, Sunny Afternoon, Come Dancing are some songs with a bit of humor in them.
Unfortunately The Kinks were one of the Bands who made huge money and huge strides in music and got screwed out of all their money by a couple different managers and record companies they ended up broke
They lost a lot of money but they are not broke. Although not nearly as wealthy as the Beatles and Stones, the Davies brothers are both millionaires.
@@sjames1955 a million isn't much nowadays average house price in decent areas are just shy of a million dollars
Bear in mind these songs were recorded quickly on primitive equipment to be played in mono on rubbish radio speakers or low quality record players. This is proto garage music and is raw and immediate. The original is the generally the best. Great idea to always play the original first.
You have to try I'm dancing the video is so funny and the story also!
IMO, It wouldn’t make sense for a song like this to be long. It’s some of the most extemporaneous, athletic, spunky music ever ;)
☮️💙💙💙🔥🔥😎
Thats the 60s ... Kinks were ahead of their time with that lead guitar riff in the middle of the song ........NOBODY AND MEAN NO BODY was doing that in the 60s well maybe Chuck Berry came close. It was punk way before punk.... Then everyone in the seventies was doing it ...I know cause I was there.
Funny I was playing the kinks a before but it was tired of waiting for you
Bobby Graham on drums.
If you want to hear it as it originally sounded you're going to have to get a transistor radio.
Best band in rock music right here. Say what you want about The Beatles but The Kinks have easy 30 classic tunes Ray Davies could right a song and have a real message with it. I am a die hard Who fan and for me The Kinks are the best. Ground breaking sound and heavily influential.
Would you check out the band Starwood? Songs- Burnin over you, and Simone. Great voices and not well known. I bought the album because I liked the cover. Was happy to find hey were really good.
SAW THEM LIVE KISAR STADIUM SF, WHAT A SHOW, CROWD=BUSINESSMEN, BIKERS, GAYS, BLACKS/WHITES
Rad
I fell in love with the original versions so I get you. That’s why I’m not a fan of live 70’s stuff, it doesn’t represent the song we all heard. The only exception to remasters is Yes “Roundabout”. The remastered version is the only way to go. 😁❤️
Live version on Shindig...
Possibly one of the first punk bands!
Then, political stuff like Dead End Street and melodic pieces like Waterloo Sunset.
How can you say they haven't grabbed you.
This is original. This predates Led Zeppelin by 5 years, but they were accused of having Jimmy Page play the guitar part. He didn’t. He does play with them on “I Gotta Move”. The Kinks invented the style. You can say that Glam and Punk even came from this years later. They aren’t as famous as some British Invasion bands because they were banned from playing the USA for five years from 1965 for drinking and fighting onstage. They are not one-dimensional. Try “She’s Got Everything”, “Days”, “Misfits”, “Victoria”, “I Gotta Move”, “See My Friends”, “Fancy”, “Tired of Waiting”, “I’ll Remember”, “Better Things” for a different side. ruclips.net/video/bKTZhyY5-VM/видео.html
I Need You another rifster in 65.
