The Kinks were extremely influential and may have been the best British Invasion band outside the Beetles. This is their second hit, modeled after their first, You Really Got Me. The guitar sound was absolutely revolutionary for the time. You Really Got Me has a Grammy for impacting music forever and It's widely regarded as the first hard rock / heavy metal song. They were still teenagers when these songs came out. The song Waterloo Sunset is the 7th most beautiful song in pop music history according to Rolling Stone. A number of prominent artists think it's the most beautiful.
The Kinks were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1990. Ray Davies is in the Songwriters Hall of Fame and was eventually knighted by Prince Charles for his contribution to music and is considered a national treasure in Great Britain. The Kinks have a very interesting story too complicated to tell here but basically they fell from stardom when they were banned from playing in America because they were badly managed and poorly behaved. That's why they are less well known than their contemporaries the Rolling Stones and the Who. They clawed their way back to the top and again became a major act in the late 70s, which really never happens. They stopped performing in the 90s due to declining ticket sales and other factors.
It's worth noting that the very long list of major artists who have covered their songs is absolutely amazing. Van Halen and the Pretenders both had their first hits with Kinks songs.

The Kinks song "You really got me" is one of the first recordings of distorted guitar that led to Rock and Metal. Also please react to Waterloo sunset by them.

If someone wants to argue The Kinks ARE the godfathers of Metal, they have adequate reasons with their first two big hits. But Ray Davies, the brother doing the most compositions, delivered a very diverse musical collection of songs. I'd suggest you listen to five numbers, all in their first 12 months: this ALL DAY, plus their first hit YOU REALLY GOT ME, then their 3rd hit, TIRED OF WAITING, then 1965's A WELL-RESPECTED MAN and finally, 1966's SUNNY AFTERNOON. Past the first two songs, every other 'hit' was pretty diverse in comparison. After those five - all are 3 min songs - you can decide for yourself. Eventually, you'll run into LOLA, too.

The Kinks had a distinctive style and sound that influenced follow on bands. They were probably one of the first to move to a Punk Rock sound.

Van Halen's first single was a Kinks song, You Really Got Me. There is a story that the guitarist, Dave Davies slashed his amp speaker with a blade to get the fuzzy guitar sound. They were part of the the British Invasion in the 60s. I personally like some of their later hits, Low Budget, Destroyer, Father Christmas.

FYI, this and "You Really Got Me" are probably their biggest hard rock hits. They have many other songs that people will recommend but are a totally different, more mellow style. However, "Lola" is a must for anyone!

The Kinks are considered by some, including me, to be the first Punk Rock band. Lead Singer and Songwriter Ray Davies has a real punk attitude, which is what punk is all about. Attitude. A sort of companion song to this one is "You Really Got Me", famously covered by Van Halen. I saw The Kinks in concert in 1979 and it was one of the best concert experiences ever, and I've seen over 500, so I have a basis for comparison. Their catalog is deep and wide, "Lola", "(Wish I Could Fly Like) Superman", "Low Budget", "Muswell Hillbillies", "National Health", the list continues....

For foundational songs, by the way this band kept rocking far past 1971, they had a great resurgence in the 1980s with quality material.
"Lola", live version from the live album One for the Road, also You Really Got Me, Where Have All the Good Times Gone, Low Budget, Misfits, Hardway, especially from this live album
Other foundational cuts: Destroyer, Muswell Hillbillies, Tired of Waiting, Well Respected Man, Sleepwalker, Jukebox Music, Superman, Celluloid Heroes, Around the Dial, Come Dancing, I could go on and on but for someone starting out you could not go wrong with these suggestions.

It is possible that Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin plays guitar on this song. Ray Davies of the Kinks says"I remember Page coming to one of our sessions when we were recording "All Day and All of the Night".

Bro! This is my favorite British Invasion band. You had the Beatles (arguably best band ever), The Rolling Stones (arguably the best band ever), The Who, a great band, the Dave Clark Five, good band and the Kinks. The kinks are The Godfather’s of a grunge and metal! You can never go wrong diving into there library! Two different eras with them. The mid 60’s stuff and the 70’s stuff, they has some good stuff in early 80’s

😂😂 All day and all night, leads to separate vacations and new relationships. The Kinks have the distinction of being part of the "British Invasion, " Additionally, although Iggy Pop is known as the godfather of punk, it really gets it's start with the Kinks and Jimmy Page. Page; known for guitar work with Led Zeppelin, was a studio musician back then and played guitar on All Day and All Night, along with You Really Got Me (covered by Van Halen in the 80's). Kinks have an oddly diverse catalog that also includes hits like Sunny Afternoon, Well Respected Man, and if you like kinky, Lo!a.

Ray never needed to disparage brother Dave's shabby guitarwork - Dave's work does that on it's own. And Jimmy Page was never that awful. Neil Young, yes... in fact, Dave and Neil could easily win the worst-popular-lead-guitarists of all-time. Neil is a surprisingly effective acoustic guitarist, though, but simply can't be trusted to play strings about the 5th fret.
