"Come Dancing" is a terrific song. I live near the site of an amusement park that was around for 100 years and is now a gated community. 😝 The song is about an old English dance hall where his sister used to go on a Saturday. Then it was a bowling alley and a parking lot. He (Ray Davies) wonders if his sister would still come dancing. (His sister died young and unexpectedly). It's so nostalgic and a great song with a big band feel. The Kinks were very underappreciated IMO. They also did a lot of social commentary like "Dedicated Follower of fashion" about Carnaby Street, "Dead End Street" about poverty, "Lola" about a transvestite and the beautiful "Waterloo Sunset". Please do some more Kinks. They started as a sort of early grunge band but varied their styles a lot.
BTW Ray Davies was stabbed trying to pursue a purse snatcher when in the US. He did survive.

Which leads me to a reminder of my two choices Harri, we're nearly at the end of the month, don't ignore them (spot the link).

"You Really Got Me" was also the lead single off of Van Halen's 1978 debut album. It finishes off the mind-blowing guitar solo Eruption. Van Halen also covered "Where Have All the Good Times Gone". The Kinks were very influential back then even if they get overlooked a bit these day. The lead single off The Pretenders 1980 debut album was a cover of "Stop Your Sobbing". Chrissie Hynde had a child with Ray Davies back in 1983. When you're ready for more from The Kinks, check out "Waterloo Sunset", "Victoria", "Tired of Waiting for You", "I'm Not Like Everybody Else", "A Well Respected Man", "Sunny Afternoon", "Father Christmas", and "Come Dancing" among many many others.

And that is our boys... Everybody say "I don't know any song of The KinKs". Then they hear You Really Got Me, Lola, All Day And All Of The Night, Dead End Street, Sunny Afternoon, Celluloid Heroes, Tired Of Waiting, Come Dancing, Low Budget, Alcohol, Waterloo Sunset or Destroyer and allways say: I know that song.... wow ,is that The KinKs as well? And don't be mistaken, if you saw ever a KinKs concert live, then you knew that the 'quiet' Ray Davies on his own could match easily all the other guys you talked about. There was just a huge hiatus in their performance in the USA since they were banned there for about 4 years because of a punch-out with a union guy and unprofessional performance. Where others acted they were the bad guys of music, they allways stayed themselves, raw, energetic, and real. God Save The KinKs!

The Kinks' catalog is just absurd. Even the mediocre albums had at least one or two stone cold classics that anyone else would kill to have written. And Dave Davies had the misfortune, if you can call it that, of being a first class songwriter in a band with one of the all-time greats. His contributions - guitar work and songwriting - can't be overstated. They had a remarkable career.
Fast-forward to the late 70s and give "A Rock n' Roll Fantasy" a listen. It's a fascinating look at a chapter in their career when they were thinking of packing it in.

One of my favorite songs by The Kinks is “Destroyer.” It’s a riff-driven song like this one, but came out much later in 1981. “Destroyer” also very overtly pays homage to their earlier songs “Lola” and “All Day and All of the Night.” In fact, because of the storyline you could call it “Lola, Part II.”

Such a raw sounding track, which must have inspired so many kids to pick up an instrument and start jamming in the garage! My favourite part of all is that early, unintended bass note at 0:17......you get the raspiness of the guitar intro, then the drums kick in, and then that bass fart hangs there for a second before the vocal.......love how rough and ready it all sounds, proper 60's 4 track recording!

While they remained popular in the UK, except for a stretch in the mid-70s when musical tastes turned toward disco, the real reason for their seemingly less than deserved adulation may have been their 4 year ban from performing in the USA (1965-1969). The musician's union in the States made them after-thoughts in the American market, unable to tour behind their record releases in that period right after the success of "You Really Got Me." The whole sordid affair was caused by their American promoter not paying them upfront for their concert dates after the group's hard-drinking and rowdy behavior made them late for a number of appearances. Add to that a couple of onstage brawls between Ray and Dave Davies and ticket sales began to decline. When the promoter (a woman named Betty Kaye) refused to pay them in advance going forward, they sabotaged their own concerts by shortening sets and, once in Sacramento before an almost empty house, playing an interminable version of "You Really Got Me" for most of a half-hour. Kaye filed a complaint with the American Federation of Musicians and they banned them for four years. It wasn't until "Lola" came out in 1970 that The Kinks regained some of the momentum they had lost on the American Top 40 chart.

The Kinks were banned from playing the USA for four years by the American Federation of Musicians (1965-69) at the height of the British Invasion for drinking and fighting onstage and off and for, when they hadn’t been paid according to their contract, intentionally playing short sets and/or one long song for the entire gig or not playing altogether. Nirvana did the same sort of onstage protest, but the Kinks were English and this was 1965, way before punk. That’s why they aren’t as well-known in the USA as the Beatles, Rolling Stones, Who,…

Nice speculation at the end about why the Kinks don't get as much attention as they deserve. I think you're right that their unpretentious down-to-earth attitude helps explain it. They certainly didn't have the personal flamboyance of those other groups you cited.
Speaking of underrated groups, you should give a listen to the Kinks' mid-1960s peer Dave Berry, singer of those haunting slow-motion songs "This Strange Effect" and "The Crying Game."

In terms of stage presence, I think Ray Davies was (and is) pretty charismatic, as was his brother Dave; the other two maybe not so much. But that's no different to say a band like the Animals , where Eric Burden and (originally) Alan Price (on keyboards) stood out more than the others.
In the UK in the early to mid-sixties, after the top tier of the Beatles and the Rolling Stones, the next tier down included the Kinks along with those other fantastic bands, the Animals and the Who. Then in the third tier there were really good pop groups including Herman's Hermits, the Dave Clark Five, the Searchers, Gerry and the Pacemakers and many others.
That's how I remember it anyway, in terms of the relative size and enthusiasm of their following/ fan bases. (Others may remember it slightly differently.) The higher they were up the scale, the more developed and original they were as musicians, AND their net looks and charisma score tended to be higher too, which obviously attracted the girls in particular. And, then of course, there was the quality of the song-writing and arrangements/production... If you got the mixture of all those ingredients just right, you were higher in the pecking order.
I don't think the Kinks were underrated, particularly, except in the US of course, where they were unfortunately banned from performing for most of the key years of the sixties, so unable to promote themselves. That was a real downer for their career and did put them at a real disadvantage.
I do think Ray's song-writing is absolutely brilliant - I'd rate him immediately behind Lennon-McCartney and Jagger-Richards - and does deserve more recognition. If you listen to a whole album of his best songs they really are stunningly good; well worth exploring. If you haven't heard Waterloo Sunset yet, that really is a must - maybe go for the official/studio version first. :-)

Great rant about attention grabbin' supies vs "average people" pop!
(Though lotsa stars pretend to be the "Ray from the block" in different ways, from Jarvis to Bruce to Cash. And Janis to Aretha to Ciccone.)
