Billy Stewart and his music is a staple in every Chicano household !! There are 5 generations in my family that can listen to his music and know every word,..from my 98 yr old grandfather to my 5 yr old grandson!❤
So true! I grew up in Southern California and grew up listening to this song so it brings back a lot of memories along with The Town I Live In Is Lonely by Thee Midniters
@@lucindagoodwin3139I grew up there too singing under those street lamps and he was definitely an inspiration. We could never get that background harmony the way they did.
@ggvno. I just thought I'd mention, that his version of Summertime (From the show Porgy and Bess) is featured in the movie: Once Upon A Time In Hollywood, from 2019.
Awesome! 😎 this song has blared from about almost every Low Rider car that ever existed, and still does at every car show. Talk about memories 🥲 thank you so much, recommend "I do love you". Thanks again Peace! 🙏
A smooooth style from Billy Stewart, thanks for reacting to this one! This song was released on Chicago's famous Chess label, and was popular in both the L.A. Chicano Low Rider scene, as well as the Carolina Beach scene (a slow dance favorite), and of course in Chicago and other big cities. Sadly, Billy died in a car accident in 1970. As others have stated, his biggest and best remembered tune was his version of the old jazz standard "Summertime," a truly unique version of the song.
Billy Stewart is one of my favorites from back then. His version of Summertime is incredible. Love this song! Exciting you did this one! Have you done any Stylistics? Betcha My Golly Wow is a good place to start with them. Incredibly smooth and catchy.
A straight-up legend who never got his just do!!! His voice was second to none! You just have to do his song "I Do Love You" That song will show you a singing style that you will never witness again by nobody except maybe Jackie Wilson. GQ also did a great cover of that song.
Billy Stewart is one of my favorite 60's r&b/soul artists. This song and "I Do Love You", both released in 1965, were r&b hits. In 1979 the band GQ released a cover of "I Do Love You" and in 1980 "Sitting in the Park" and both of them charted. Funnily enough what originally put me on to Stewart and this song was rapper Slick Rick's 1994 album Behind Bars which featured a song called "Sittin In My Car" which sampled Stewart'. It hit #11 on the rap singles chart. No doubt when Stewart released this song he never could have envisioned its legacy. Sadly he didn't get to see it as he was tragically killed in a car crash in 1970. Great reaction Jay & Amber!
Oh My Goodness!!! Billy went off!!! Soul music++++++ Good reactions!!! I like Amber's reaction.....about the background vocal being "Sweet Angelic Smooth ..all of the above" crcks me up...very very true.....then J saying "Hold on a minute" meaning the vocal was getting to him so deep he was ready to EXPLODE and had to take a minute to compose himself....lol....Love it!!! Great reactions!!! lol
You HAVE to play "Summertime" by Billy Stewart. When I moved to San Jose (population was only 60 k at the time and I heard him on the radio along with The Lovin' Spoonful's, "Summer in the City" both songs every day the summer of 1966. WHAT MEMORIES!!! P.S. Billy does some magic with his tongue !
SUMMERTIME! Billy Stewart had a big hit with his rendition of the is classic song. I can't imagine how you missed it. Sitting in the Park has always reminded me of the band War and their ballad SUMMER ( A completely different song with the same name)oddly enough. I suspect War were big fans of Billy Stewart.
He had a great voice, other tracks by him: "Summertime" (the long version), "I Do Love You", "I'm No Romeo", "No Girl", "Secret Love", "Cross My Heart". There are many more but these are good ones to start with.
This was covered by r&b group GQ in the 70s along with his song I Do Love You. GQ also did some disco like the song Disco Nights. You should also checkout Booker T and the MGs. Another r&b instrumental group from the 60s. Booker T. Jones played the organ and he was backed by some of the most famous session musicians of that time and beyond. Check out their song Green Onions and Time Is Tight. Some 60s soul for female friday - Barbara lynn (she plays guitar on this) - you’ll lose a good thing; Shirelles - will you love me tomorrow, baby it’s you, dedicated to the one I love, soldier boy, mama said; Erma franklin (Aretha's sister [was covered by Janis Joplin) - peace of my heart; Gloria jones - tainted love (covered in the 80s by soft cell); Irma Thomas - time is on my side (covered by the Rolling Stones); Doris troy - just one look
OMG Billy Stewart's Sitting In The Park is my ALL TIME Favorite soul song. Here in NYC it was a staple for street corner vocal groups for many years and still is. Billy puts so much feeling into this beautiful song and his vocal style is one of a kind. I thankfully own many of his Chess 45's. This us what I wrote about his song "Strange Feeling" which you would LOVE too. A song so filled with beauty it takes your breath away and transports you to another world. From the opening chorus sounding like a heavenly choir to Stewart's first line, "I have lived my life in a sad world." only 25 seconds have elapsed, but if there is a more transcendental opening half minute in a soul song, I would like to hear it. No one sang like Billy. You might think his style of scatting and repeating words would obscure the deepest feelings in a song, but amazingly, it does just the opposite. What a beautiful man he was! If you like this song I would recommend you listen to some of his other hits: Reap What You Sow, I Do Love You, Count Me Out, Sitting In the Park (my all time favorite soul song), Summertime, Secret Love, Look Back and Smile, No Girl (the latter two are the same song with different lyrics and both are tremendous) This is the longest version I have found of this sublime song. The one on his greatest hits album, I Do Love You, cuts out over 25 seconds and even the one on the original Chess 45 is lacking a few seconds at the end. Tragically, Billy died in a car accident in Jan. 1970. He was only 32 years old.
We lost Billy Stewart at a very early age but he is a legend in R & B music!! Someone has said it already, you must hear his rendition of, "Summertime!"
I remember the name Billy Stewart, but don't recall this song. It's Really Beautiful... with beautiful Harmony!! And I really love the 'production' of it.... voices so Clear Pure & Beautiful with a slight bit of tasteful Echo. Fantastic!! What a Great Song to React to, You Guys! Thanks! :)
Still love this Classic Oldie but Goodie. Sadly later generations will never experience what it felt to slow dance to this song. I DO LOVE YOU and SUMMERTIME are also great. 👍👍👍
Doo Wop Classic!!!! This is the type of song my dad and his friends would sing when they were hanging out, imagining they were a group!! The Whispers have a nice cover version, but this is pure gold!!
Definitely check out Billy Stewart's version of "Summertime" -- the full five minute version. And for more "souldies" also check out Brenton Wood (aka Alfred Smith) "I Like The Way You Love Me", "I Think You've Got Your Fools Mixed Up", and "Gimme Little Sign" along with many others.
Great " Lowrider Oldie" from the 60s other great songs from Billy Stewart are " I Do Love You" and his awesome rendition of " Summertime" Great reaction 😊❤
Yes I suggested that along with others who suggested it awhile ago and forgot about that suggestion. Thanks for bringing that back. I suggested it along with Little Anthony and the Imperials "Tears On My Pillow", "Goin' Out of My Head" and "Hurts So Bad". I also suggested "La-La Means I Love You", "Didn't I (Blow Your Mind This Time) and "Hey Love" by The Delfonics from the later 60's. I also remember suggesting "Our Day Will Come" by Ruby and the Romantics for a 60's suggestion and "Smokey Joe's Cafe" by The Robins for a 50's suggestion.
Grew up listening to him in the 60s. Billy's music was romantic, soulful, and melodic...with a touch of sadness. His music brings back soooo many good memories!
Great voice great song! would love your reaction to The Defonics "Didn't I Blow your mind this Time Didn't I"Philly soul. Plus the Stylistics " You Make Me Feel Brand New". please!!!
Amber and Jay, I'm so glad ya'll finally got to hear Billy Stewart! And I really enjoyed your reaction. I suggested him a long time ago because of his unique singing style and voice, I knew you'd love him. As others have mentioned you should react to his songs Summertime and I Do Love You. You'll absolutely love them!❤
“Stone in Love with You” - The Stylistics (1972). Singer Russell Thompkins Jr.'s falsetto is perhaps the purest ever on record. This was the most anticipated slow song played at our 7th grade dances. Enjoy! Jerry.
Been listening to you guys for so long now. You are speaking to me as I grew up listening to this music. 74 yrs old and this is my music. I had this album and Billy Stewart and this song was one of my favorites! Amber, you are truly an old soul and touch my heart with your reactions to the 60's and 70's music! And Jay, yes, Barry Gibb was one of the best. Try Cross My Heart by Billy Stewart!
Billy Stewart was one of the best!! You should listen to his songs, "Fat Boy," "Summertime," "I Do Love You," and many more!! If you do "Summertime" you will hear a unique noise coming from his voice that no one else does. Both of you will absolutely fall in love with him!! He's a great artist. He was very popular at our favorite beach, "Myrtle Beach," in South Carolina. Our state dance is the "shag." We do a lot of dancing with beach music. His music was and still is very big in the Carolinas. I still have an 8-track tape of his!! I love listening to Billy!! He had a lot of great hits. Explore them sometimes.
He's got another hit similar ,that even bigger..I Do Love You...That scat was Billy...Which leads To another song Cross My Heart that I Love Her..Then he kicks it up With his other big hit, his scat jazzy cover of Summertime will blow you away with vocalize range .Then his cover of Secret Love . scat is just as awesome ..Thanks for finaly reacting to one truly great vocalist..of his generation. He passed away unfortunately just his star was beginning to rise..To health issuses...RIP ..Billy love your music!..Peace & Love you two!
This is one of the finest Chicano style oldies to ever come out back in the day, this gentleman caught the field and spirit like no other. so glad to see that you two kids really dig on this fine Style of soul music.
So happy you chose to listen to the great Billy Stewart. I grew up on these songs (I’m 75 yo). Do yourself a favor and create a “station” on Pandora with the artist Chairman Of The Board (or The Band of Oz, The Embers or The Catalina’s). This is the beach music sound that we danced to (called the Shag) . Go for a drive with this playing. Better yet, Jay sits on the back porch with a glass of Makers Mark and sips while you watch Amber dancing (trying to shag). The smile will be endless. I promise!
Of all the songs of the sixty’s you have done there is one great singer that you have missed. Gene Pitney recorded 16 top 40 songs in the US between 1961 and 1068. He was even bigger in the UK. His genre was pop and country but he also recorded some Blue Eyed Soul music. One of his I think you will like because it tells a story is The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance which is from the movie of the same name and I think you should react to the movie as well. Some of my other favorites are Half Heaven Half Heartache, 24 Hours From Tulsa,Town Without Pity and many more. When the Beatles hit big in the US I was probably the only girl gaga for Gene Pitney over the Fab 4. He also wrote hit songs for other singers like Roy Orbison, Bobby Vee and Ricky Nelson. The Rolling Stones liked Gene so much Mick Jagger and Keith Richards wrote a song for him called That Girl Belongs To Yesterday. Please react to his music. I think you will like it. Also he includes horns in a lot of his songs.
The big man Billy Stewart is pure soul. I was in high school in Passaic, NJ when this song was a hit. It propels me back to such good times in the in late 1960's.
EVERY TIME I WATCH YOU GUYS GROOVE TO THESE SENSATIONAL OLD SCHOOL ARTISTS AND SONGS I HAVE A CONSTANT SMILE FROM EAR TO EAR! I’ve commented before how REFRESHING it is to see your generation RECOGNIZING some of the GREATEST MUSIC EVER RECORDED from MY generation 🎶 You’re THE BEST! AND…if you could give a listen to my TOP TWO FAVORITE OLD SCHOOL R&B SONGS…I’d be overjoyed ☺️ THE INTRUDERS…TOGETHER 🎶🎶 THE MARVELETTES…FOREVER (aka Darling Forever) LOVE YOU GUYS ♥️
Great song! I thank my late uncle Eli who introduced me to this type of music when I was just a kid in the middle 70s, he used to play "No Girl", "Secret Love", "Look Back and Smile", "Moon River", "I Do Love You", "Summertime", just to name a few. Guys, may I suggest you to try "What Does It Take (To Win Your Love)" by Jr. Walker & The All Stars. Cheers from Brazil .
Ah what a a killer cut way before I was born sounds so good the voice back ground vocals and fab musicians what a great love song it hearts many thsnks
You should definitely react to his song, Summertime. The musical arrangement and his vocal style are dynamic and dramatic. After that, I think you'll be able to better articulate what's so unique about his vocal style. A straight up masterpiece!
Well well it's about time you guys get to listen to one of the greatest musicians singer song writer and soul artists of all time. No one before him, no one during his time and no one after his tragic passing in 1970 and no one since has sounded like Mr Stewart. He took the art form of scat and put in to his own unique style of singing he influenced many many of soul groups and artists of the 60s &70s and even into the 80sThis is only the tip of the iceberg. Even if you don't get a chance to react on your channel to his music. Then on your own time Please check out more of his huge catalog music. I do suggest his live version of summer time recorded at the nixon theater. It will literally blow you away ❤️✌️
The UK legend, Georgie Fame released a fantastic cover of this great old track a year after it's original release, & hit No12 in the UK charts. A lot of his music was based around 'Blue-Beat' from Jamaica, & set him up for a loooooong career!! He's still performing, in the 2020's!!!
@@AdrianDeVore You should check out Summertime, by Bobby Hatfield, of The Righteous Brothers. Close your eyes & you'll swear he's no white man, I guarantee!!
What a voice. Back in the day. You really had to have talent, and I don't mean talent in the studio, I mean true singers with no computerized music or anything else to help them. They exist simply on their talent. And that's why "back in the day" live concerts were so great.
This song and another Billy Stewart song, "I Do Love You" , was covered by a group called GQ in the late 70's timeframe. Both songs got a lot of airplay, at least locally in my hometown.
Absolute classic! That scatting voice was Billy! Also check out his classics I Do Love You and the show tune Summertime. When you play Summertime I really hope you get the longest version, so you can hear all his great voice could do. We lost him too soon...
" Night Breeze " by RONNIE LAWS from 1976 Romantic Soul and Rhythm and Blues all in this amazing Soulful song from start to finish Jay and Amber you'll love this awesome song with amazing harmonies.
Billy comes from a gospel and doo wop background. Which is why the vocals sound that way. Billy was a genius. Summertime, I Do Love You!! ANY SONG OF BILLY'S is worth checking out. RIP Billy😢. Gone way to soon.
Yes Jay, this song was a popular ballroom song. I was a kid but I remember my aunts and uncle doing a dance called the Strand and it was the coolest dance to see. It looked liked they were gliding across the floor.

My favorite Billy Stewart song is "Reap What You Sow."
Ah...the days when people sang beautifully.
“I do love you” is his other super hit.Other great songs as well.

Billy's "I Do Love You" is the truth!!
🎶 Billy Stewart "Strange Feeling' big time hit, along with ' Summertime" & "I Do Love You" 🎶
You should definitely react to his song, Summertime. The musical arrangement and his vocal style are dynamic and dramatic. After that, I think you'll be able to better articulate what's so unique about his vocal style. A straight up masterpiece!
I Do Love You was played over and over when I was 13 and my sister was 16 1/2. She never gave the record player a rest. Love ya Carol.
This is what we call 'low rider music' where I'm from. Love it!
Listen to all his music he was a legend.
"Summertime"! It's a MUST of his!
Remembering the Blvd. in Los Angeles, Ca. Low riders driving back and forth playing this song. Many memories.
Real soul music, not Motown pop, but SOUL! Sweet voice, harmonies and orchestration.
Wow, got some Los Angeles oldies going on! "I Do Love You" will warm your heart.
I loved listening to Mr. Billy Stewart when I was young and my favorites were “ I Do Love You” and “ Summertime “
What talent!!!❤❤❤ Billy!!
Now this is GOOD music !
This song is a Jamaican Anthem on Sundays Radio station.
Oldie But Goodie. Every lowrider in the hood had that Oldies But Goodies Vol 1 blaring on from an 8-track with Pep Boys 6" speakers.
I would recommend Yeah, Yeah by Georgie Fame and Summertime by The Zombies.

You should check out Summertime, by Bobby Hatfield, of The Righteous Brothers.
This was one of my first introductions to mellow soul.....been a fan ever since ❤
This song and another Billy Stewart song, "I Do Love You" , was covered by a group called GQ in the late 70's timeframe.
I remember this from high school. It brings back so many great memories until it hurts to listen to it today. 😢
" Night Breeze " by RONNIE LAWS from 1976 Romantic Soul and Rhythm and Blues all in this amazing Soulful song from start to finish Jay and Amber you'll love this awesome song with amazing harmonies.
CLUTCH! It will change everything you know about yourself 🎉
Billy comes from a gospel and doo wop background. Which is why the vocals sound that way. Billy was a genius. Summertime, I Do Love You!! ANY SONG OF BILLY'S is worth checking out. RIP Billy😢. Gone way to soon.
Billy Stewart's, I'm in Love
My cousin Bobby McClure covered this in 1980! ❤ Love this song!

My mom and dad were at Garfield high school up here in Seattle 1967 :)
I humbly suggest "Motown Mondays".
Yes Jay, this song was a popular ballroom song. I was a kid but I remember my aunts and uncle doing a dance called the Strand and it was the coolest dance to see. It looked liked they were gliding across the floor.
Oh yes!!! Love this song.
