I heard this song for the first time about 20 years ago on a PBS special and I was blown away. I went and bought Billy Stewart's greatest hits album and I love it. I wish more people were exposed to him because he's fantastic with a sound all his own. So, thanks for playing "Summertime" which is perfect for the summertime.

Summertime was written by the great American Classical/Jazz composer George Gershwin-who included it in his opera Porgy and Bess-he insisted the whole cast was black to make the first opera featuring all black performers. It first came out in 1935.

Billy was so great. Died too young. He was driving with three of his bandmates in his new Thunderbird across a long bridge over the Neuse River in North Carolina. For some unknown reason the car ran off the bridge into the river and all four of them were killed. We will never know what happened.
My brother and his friends used to go and listen live to Billy Stewart at Myrtle Beach, SC.
Billy killed it! I love his unique artistic style. My favorite version of Summertime. BJ is really feeling it as it should be.

I grew up listening to oldies in ELA and Billy Stewart was very popular back then. *Strange feelings* and *Cross my heart*, as well as *I do love you* & *Sitting in the Park* were played all the time- for years. Oldies don't get Old 😊

Porgy & Bess was a 'black' opera (Porgy & Bess). Yes, the original version in the opera & sang by others is a slow song. He was one of the singers to re-arrange the song into a 45 dance song.

While I love everything Billy Stewart released in the 60's, I think the best version of this Gershwin tune is the Ella Fitzgerald/Louis Armstrong version. Check it out!

Billy Stewart has a style of singing his songs. If you hear Sitting In The Park and I Do Love You you will hear it. Billy amped up his style and put this funky jazz on it. This version is so hot. still! It's a show tune.

It's a show tune from Porgy and Bess, that had an all Black cast, back in the early 60s I believe.
That's an oldie; first recording goes way back to the ? 1930's ? This one, Billy's recording, is from the 1960's. Been covered a number of times since the 30's; Ella did one. You might also enjoy SUBLIME's cover of it.

This is such a great vocal performance by Billy Stewart and it was so cool seeing how you guys really got it. And it sounds like a live in the studio type of track.......just dynamite!!
I think Summertime is considered to be a vintage jazz/blues standard from way back but you won't find a version that resembles this one.
Summertime falls squarely in the center of what is known as the Great American Songbook. It would be easier to list who DIDN'T sing this song in the 40s and 50s. Everyone took a whack at it. Everyone. But Stewart put a unique spin on it that set his version far apart from any others. Perhaps that is why his was on the charts as a major pop hit.

Asia and BJ, I love ALL of the versions of this song!❤ But I do remember this version coming across the radio airways when I was a very little girl and liked it right away...(mom used to say I danced off of anything music 😅). Al Jarreau has a great version of it, too, on his cd called "Tenderness". Great reaction.
