Some more 70s soul groups to react to: The spinners - it’s a shame (the falsetto); The o’jays - for the love of money, I love music, backstabbers, stairway to heaven; Stylistics - people make the world go round, break up to make up, you are everything, i’m stone in love with you; Chi-lites - oh girl, (for god’s sake) give more power to the people; The undisputed truth - smiling faces sometimes. And some more Sly and The Family Stone - family affair, everyday people, everybody is a star, dance to the music, stand!, hot fun in the summertime, you can make it if you try, if you want me to stay, Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin).

I actually had tears in my eyes listening to this song again from the early 70's. Music was so great back then. I remember walking down 42nd Street in New York City in 1971 while this song was blasting from the speakers coming from the record stores along the street. Now we no longer have those great record stores nor the great music that just made you want to dance and be happy. The computer killed everything including the great live musicians that played on those records.

My absolute favorite male group form this era. My Detroit’s own Dramatics!
Fun fact, the term “What you see, is what you get” came from the Flip Wilson comedy show. Flip had a character ( he was dressed in drag😀) named Geraldine who would say very sassy “What you see, is what you get”!

I have not heard this song since I was a child. The phrase "What You See is Whay You Get" was affiliated mostly with comedian Flip Wilson when he was in drag playing "Geraldine" in his comedy sketches on his variety TV Show The Flip Wilson Show, which ran from 1970 to 1974. This is probably where these guys got the idea for a song. it was avery common phrase back then thanks to Flip Wilson. Wilson was damn funny, checked him out.

My all time FAVORITE band. Each member can (and does) sing lead.
Other Dramatics songs to check out: "Just Shopping," "Stop your Weeping," "Get Up and Get Down," and "Door to Your Heart."
Jay is a hip-hop head, so he may recognize the Dramatics "It Ain't Raining" sampled in Beanie Sigel's "Mom Praying."

Music In the 50s, 60s and 70s, and possibly sooner, is more impactful in such a deeper way and level.

Snoop Dogg announced these men as the fabulous Dramatics in his/their song "Doggy Dogg World". Ever heard the song "Now That We('ve) Found Love"? It was first recorded by The O'Jays in 1973. A Jamaican band called Third World released their version in 1978 as a reggae-disco song. American group Heavy D & the Boyz released their dance/house-cover of the song in 1991.

The recording studio STAX had a House Band, which became known as "Booker T. and The M.G.s" (Booker T. Jones, Donald 'Duck' Dunn, Steve Cropper and Al Jackson, Jr.) - you should be familiar with at least TIME IS TIGHT. There is a classic video on you tube Live in Oakland with them opening for CCR on 1/31/70 worthy of your reaction. Steve and Donald also became regulars in The Blues Bros. Band (film, album and touring). GREEN ONIONS was another staple instrumental of Booker T. and The M.G.s you should be familiar, recorded many times at various tempos, etc. - used in so many soundtracks, and covered by every band with an organ.

Love this group! There are so many cool groups in the early 70s. I love Sly and Family Stone.
