  • This was the last stop of a working holiday hemp tour of Northern NSW Australia that I undertook in October 2022, in part for my birthday.
It shows and talks about the external walls of 2 hempcrete structures. The granny flat built first that the couple lived in. And the house they are building now. I wonder if the windows are in and what else they have achieved....I certainly look forward to returning one day to present the finished build.
The highlights reel for the tour is found here:

Kirstie Wulf form Shelter Building design specialises in sustainable building design. The couple just posted that the rendering is done and the house thanks to it's orientation, eaves and insulation (hempcrete) stays at a stable temperature all year around for living with no active heating/cooling required. The owner has said I am welcome to go for another visit now that it is finish so I'll do another video in a few months to show the finished house 🙂🙂

The finished house video is a kind of next level production wise and can be found here: ruclips.net/video/EHQR6Ha69kc/видео.html Enjoy!

What are the insulation qualities....would it be a good fit for Alaska? And its temperature/humidity/weather fluctuations?

Different climates have different thickness walls. So in Australia in NSW which is in a ‘central’ Australian climate zone 250mm walls are standard. In Tasmania which is further south so much colder standard is 350mm walls. So you tailor the thickness of the walls to suit the R value you need. Can go up to 450mm or more and down to 100mm but that’s not common.

Thanks for sharing Jeremy. Was this main house tamped around a timber stick frame or is it solid hempcrete with structural posts only to support the roof mass ?

Walls are tamped around a structural stick frame. There is an earlier video which shows some of this. And my latest video shows the finished house.

    Cost for each block?

Hi Jeremy. I was just wondering about the costs of this kind of construction? Is it comparable to traditional brick veneer / or weatherboard? Thanks in advance.

      Hi John,
Everything is relative in a build.
Having a good hempcrete contractor team doing the build is currently more expensive as the contractors are few and far between for now. Theres a good business in it for anyone keen. So many opt for the home builder approach which can keep costs comparable (and of course there are the many benefits that will save you money over the years). And whilst hempcreting is relatively easy, one will need to work on a few jobs first then have a good carpenter and mixer/baker. The team leader (you perhaps) can then run the job with any number of extra general hands/labourers as long as there is a short (1/2 hour is normally fine) training session for any new hands joining the bucketing and tamping process...
The following video works as a bit of a 'how to'...

How long is hempcrete supposed to last?

There is a "historic hemp house in Nagano (Japan) was built in 1698." .... which is in great condition apparently...

Can you cast hempcrete against an existing stick frame, with exterior sheathing in place?

    • @JeremyThomas_Environmentarian
      @JeremyThomas_Environmentarian  Год назад +1

      Hi Cheryl,
Thanks for connecting and your question.
Take a look at this video regarding retrofitting hempcrete with existing stick frames. All external an internal cladding was removed and proper plywood for work was used.
      ruclips.net/video/y3unDgTUyRA/видео.html
During this process one of the for ply boards didn't have enough fixings so we got bulging. we removed the board, scrapped back the bulge, re attached the board and re filled and tamped.
Lesson being that when you tamp down hempcrete the combination of the weight of the material and pressure of the tamping is significant and if the formwork is not adequate the finish will not be great. Perhaps ok of lime rendering everything any way...
So it depends on the exterior sheathing but in general this sheathing, panelling, cladding etc is not designed to have 100s of KGs of pressure from the hempcrete and tamping and probably wouldn't hold up and you'd get bugling or even a blow out. Once the hempcrete is set, which only takes a day or so, then the chance of this happening is minimal.
So perhaps you could temporarily reinforce the external sheathing with bracing or similar for the day or so it takes for the hempcrete to do the initial set then remove the bracing and hope there are no blow outs.
Test it on a small section and let us know how you go!
