By Environmentarian.au - B2B biz and web dev for you. Morally conscious, creatively sustainable. Cutting and testing hempcrete in various ways has been on my list for a while. Will Brain gave this panel section while back and I made the time to cut it, bash it, chisel it and film the process. I needed some smaller portions to use as part of a talk to 5th year students at the School of Architect...

This is an urgent and exciting prospect- food, building, clothing, negative carbon and so much more. How do we get all this information together and make things happen.
Thanks for the comment Annie! It's happening. If you can contribute to hembuilding.au we'll be able to do more... hempbuilding.au/help-hbd-help-the-planet/
is there a video on the complete build? I want to know if strip foundations are enough or its necessary to make it a slab. Would buy a course if available, thanks.
Hi mate, this house was a retrofit and there is a longer video with much more info. It's the Queenslander one. Yes, strip foundations will work but a slab has more thermal mass to regulate the internal temperatures. I'd like to build a structure on piers. Once the walls were complete use the fix form panels onto underside of floor bearers and fill the cavity with hempcrete insulation. This would provide both insulation and thermal mass without the need for truck loads of concrete. What do you think?
I run the Hemp Building Directory at www.hempbuilding.au where there is a bunch more info...
Thanks Jeremy, particularly for the details on internal wall finishing.
No worries. Glad you liked it and I appreciate the specific comment!
Brilliant video John and Jeremy. So clear on the many advantages and positive realities of iHemp. A real resource for anyone wanting to get into knowing what it is all about. Could help to drive a lot of well informed positive engagement with the hemp industry. Perhaps some follow up videos of how people are responding to this?
Thanks for the comment Tony. All this Education and Advocacy work I do takes a lot of time. I am a single dad with all the expenses that comes with that living in Redfern, Sydney. I am a very hard worker but none of this content or my work with hempbuilding.au contributes to income. If you'd like to sponsor a video do reach out for a chat! Just a few $100 would help towards making another video even tough they are worth more like a few $1000... or just head to the Hemp Building Directory to drop a little contribution. Thanks again! hempbuilding.au/help-hbd-help-the-planet/
iHemp - I like that term.
Great work and some impressive developments I hadn't heard of yet, just adding more to the list of benefits.

Window treatments - do hemp buildings need external roller shutters to keep winter heat in / summer heat out? Did this build have any a/c, ceiling fans, heating etc?
No A/c needed. I will make sure to be explicit about fans, A/C, heating etc in my next video. It was the middle of winter, mild in Australia, so we did put on a tiny electric heater for about 1/2hr after evening showers...
So what were the internal temps - minimum & maximum compared to externals during your winter stay?
Hi Susan, that would have been a good thing to measure! I'll pop that on my to do list for the next time I stay in a hempcrete house ie pack a thermometer and take some readings and different times of the day... I con only say for now that it was warm in the house when we arrived late at night. The slab was exuding heat into our feet. On the second day it was cloudy the whole day, but warmth still penetrated an we kept the windows close to trap it in.

The bathroom mosaic is an interpretation of Hokusai's "Great Wave off Kanazawa". Over a year, the house produces more electricity than it uses.
Thanks Kirstie for this extra info! Good to know :)
Keep em coming, people need to see to believe and the more you can show, the more people will make the choice to build with a more durable medium for longevity, resilience, and health.
Thanks for the comment buddy! I'll do my best to keep em coming but I gotta hustle to pay rent and look after my daughter solo so I can only do what I can... If you feel like contributing hit this link :) hempbuilding.au/help-hbd-help-the-planet/ Thanks so much either way...

Loving the grand designs style of this video.
Thanks Amelia!
Great video, and interesting to see bigger forms being used. How do you do our curves? With moulding or once the form is removed? Thanks
Thanks! Create the form you want with molding first. 1/4 cut PVC pipes can work well. If going off form hempceret that one must be diligent with the packing and tamping but if it's rendered then you can refine the cures with render layers...

Is Hemp the same as Marijuana?
Hi Levi, Marijuana was a word created to demonise all forms of cannabis. Hemp is in the cannabis family. It has been used for 1000s of years by humans for all kinds of things. The seeds are super food with high protein, omega 3&6. The fibre has 1000s of uses from clothes (the first jeans were made from hemp) to paper (the declaration of independence was first made from hemp) to rope and sails (the English Navy ruled the world thanks to hemp) and building materials from the Romans to modern day highly efficient hempcrete passive houses.
I've always said it takes a community to raise a family; This seems like a really good passion project for all involved.
Can I have one, please?
Hi guys this all sounds good but what about fixing out, doors skirtings, jams, architraves, cupboards etc, how do you secure these to the walls without it all falling off, also do you need to have the roof on when packing out the walls with hempcrete? And what about the external walls, can one use stone blocks or bricks as an external finish?
- That is quite a few question....thanks! I'd be happy to arrange a zoom or similar meeting so we can have a chat and I can address some of these. Head to environmentarian.au/ to book in :) - Regarding shelving I have this video which may be helpful ruclips.net/video/wiKZo7Z7uoE/видео.html - And also check out www.hempbiulding.au that has plenty of free info..
Beautiful!
Ok experiment with a concrete additive. Do the bugs like it and dies it decompose over time.
Hi, great work! The hemp is really amazing. Maybe I got this wrong but I heard sand shouldn't be used in this mix or maybe it is when you only use hemp + lime as a plaster rather than building a wall? Thanks a mill.
Hi Julien, thanks for the comment and glad you like the videos. I've seen issues with sand mixed in walls and other walls that perform better due to the extra thermal mass. But I think 'no sand. is now best practice...
@@JeremyThomas_Environmentarian Thanks a mill for your thorough answer! All the best.
That was good. Thanks...😊
No worries. Glad you enjoyed it..
Beautiful house!
I love this! I have been researching hemp homes because my current home has mold. Can you tell me what would happen if a builder would use moldy wood for the framework? Would that eventually spread like it does in a stick built home? I know it's happening a lot more with regular stick built homes causing homeowners to get very sick.
Using moldy wood would likely just cause the mold to spread through again, since mold only really needs a lack of sunlight and trapped moisture to grow on natural product surfaces like wood. If you're dealing with mold on the inside of your home and you can't move, I'd recommend getting dehumidifiers for the worst rooms since mold grows better in dark and humid conditions. If you can afford it, get an inspector or plumber to comb through your place for any leaking pipes since a leaking pipe will leech water in to very hard to reach areas, giving mold a safe starting point to grow out from. That's all I know though, try contacting a local building company and see what they have for advice.
Hi Jeremy, is the linked video meant to be private?

Thanks for the input :)
Hi Jeremy. I'm with you on all aspects of hemp and other uses of this magnificent god given material. But please, don't torpedo your message by using that " ESG" rubbish. It is a wall street Black rock idea to control direction, people, money, councils & governments for their own ends. ESG us not a positive thing for anyone except Larry Fink & Bill Gates. Black rock invented, implemented & run the ESG scheme / fraud. Don't dance with these demons.
Thanks Mr J Doe, for your interesting thought provoking comment. It prompted me to dig a little deeper to compliment my knowledge gained through an ESG course I completed at RMIT. Have you done something similar? The content focused on SSI (Sustainability and Social Impact) which was the name for the course a few years ago, and ESG (Environmental Social Governance). The idea behind ESG is so that companies can develop their own ESG approaches relevant to their industries. This way they have targets to hit based on various metrics from appropriate 3rd party assessors. I feel it's better to have approaches and metrics in place than none at all. The building industry in Australia uses NATHER/BASIX, Greenstar and others. Another acronym is PPP (People, Planet Profit) but I feel ESG works better. Perhaps to make change on a grass toots level one needs to dance with demons...?
