    Information about this house
    ______________________________
    Concrete slab
There was going to be a similar amount of concrete to do piers versus concrete slab. The concrete slab creates fantastic thermal mass. It’s not a polish concrete but it’s sealed and has a nice finish that facilitates cleaning.
    Orientation and Eaves
The orientation and eaves of a structure are a very important design feature. This let’s in natural light and controls warmth from the sun naturally. In Summer when the sun is high in the sky it is blocked from entering the house. In winter when the sun is low in the sky it streams through the large north facing (Southern Hemisphere) windows to warm up the house and importantly the concrete slab which releases that heat back into the house long after the sun has set…
    Clerestory windows
Clearstory windows not only let in a lovely reflected light throughout the day but are also operable so as to be able to release any heat that may build up in summer.
Sealing of internal Hempcrete feature walls
Rockcoat Repel seals the walls naturally, is breathable, and retains the natural colours and organic grain which compliment the organic design pallet. It's kind of like off form concrete but more natural - hempcrete.
    Rendered Internal walls
The internal walls were finished with a natural clay render to make them a little bit more robust in the kids and guest bedrooms.
    Cooling tube for the pantry
The cooling tube draws air into it which is cooled by passing through the ground and then cools the pantry, right next to the kitchen. There is a vent at the top of the pantry that lets hot air out. So it's a cool dark place to store produce, always a few degrees cooler than the house with the pantry door closed to maintain this temperature naturally with no use of fossil fuels.
    Water tank
A massive water tank is specified inline with local regulations to provide water for the 4 bedroom household based on rainfall predictions. An additional 20 000 litres is stored so that the rural fire brigade has access to water on the property incase of bushfires.
    Human Waste
A worm septic tank captures and processes all the human waste with the treated liquid pumped to an absorption zone a specific distance from the house. This system is smaller than a traditional septic tank system and requires less maintenance.
    Solar Power - off grid
Off grid solar power system with batteries to power all modern appliances etc.
    Hemp
Australian hemp Masonry company supplied the hemp Hurd and binder

I'm doing a clay/lime plaster workshop in a couple of weeks. I'm in NZ. Hempcrete seems like the way to go. Yeah - more details on slab seal process that you have stated were more cost effective, would be great. Or even the process of a consented earthen floor would be cool to see.
    Keep making the videos!

Hi Jeremy, there's such an amazing content in all of your videos. Im a mechanical engineer from Argentina, I'm very interested in learning all about hempcrete and why not working on it!

A light commentary about the hempcrete building industry in Australia. Thank you. Can you please produce a video comparing apples to apples.
What’s the building square footage? How much does it cost to build per square foot?
Is this offset in the capacity of operating costs
I was surprised to learn that hempcrete was termite proof. Can you please explain in another video?

Hi David, I'd love to do this video you are suggesting. My next video will be regarding how people can sponsor me to do more videos as I can only afford to do this as a side job for now...

Did the owners have any issues with the hempcrete during \ after the build, or do anything unique during? I saw some houses sometimes get some cracking in the walls (which might be caused when new hempcrete is tamped onto too dry hempcrete). It's a great product, I plan to build with it soon!

So how much to build? Went to the website, nothing about price in the FAQ? How is that not an FAQ!?

    • @JeremyThomas_Environmentarian
      @JeremyThomas_Environmentarian  2 месяца назад +1

Good point and is certainly a FAQ. I'll do a post , and maybe even a video, on this one day. But cost is relative and one can consider architectural significance and long term savings in energy bills for a start...
