Great review again thanks Tom. I ordered mine in May....eagerly awaiting🙏. About that touch screen - is it easy to dim for night driving? I assume it dims automatically? With many cars with their screens so high and prominant I find them way too bright and distracting at night, and as this one's so big I'm hoping it won't blind me! Cheers. P.S. Here in Australia we should be calling the front boot a froot, not a frunk😁!
It’s Sept 2023 and I am just seeing this review. I just bought a used 2021 Long Range and it drives like a new car. So here is a short review three years later. The car is a simple pleasure to drive. I enjoy the acceleration and the ease and comfort of the ride. The technology makes the experience top notch, whether you are driving it or away from it. If you buy one take the time to study all of its features and get well acquainted with the app. Tesla does a wonderful job of not doing anything superfluously. Everything seems to have a purpose, and the driving experience is elegant, intuitive, and seamless. I would’ve loved to have bought a performance, but honestly, the practicality of lower insurance and going easier on the tires (I hear that the performance model goes through them fast.) made the long range a no-brainer. Plus I put a lot of miles on my car and drive long distances often. On that note, I have not experienced range anxiety because I charge at home as needed, and there are ample charging stations everywhere here in California. This car is a fantastic daily ride. I like its size, footprint, handling, and easy maneuverability. I also like the safety and stability of AWD, especially in wet or snowy conditions. The only big qualm I have is they should have given it a hatchback like the Model S has. Finally, I paid under $24k for mine. There been critical comments about the resale value of Teslas. But that’s a huge advantage if you’re buying a used Tesla. The battery life and longevity are not issues. People are reporting that they have the plenty of life left after 200k miles of use. There is so much more to say, but I will leave it at that.
You don't even give it a second thought looking up and to the left to look out the rear view mirror because that's how you've always done it. You will get use to looking slightly to the left to see the speedometer over time.
This was a thorough and balanced review - many thanks. We jumped in to order in October 2021 and received a refreshed Model 3 LR in February 2022. This model had the updated AMD Ryzen board running the dashboard screen, 12 volt lithium battery (auxiliary) and double glass for reduced noise. As a Tesla fan for six years, Tesla shareholder and having spent many hours test driving the model S, X and 3, I was still hugely impressed at how good a daily driver this car is. We had a 2016 VW Tiguan that cost $46K that we traded in for the Tesla. The model 3 LR was a little under twice the cost.... BUT the Tesla is 20 times the driving experience. I am not kidding.
My wife is about to order one she had my approval as i have been watching anything that is EV love it even my makita 36v whipper snipper beats my honda gx35 and with fuel prices charging this with our solar energy too is a win win.

How things can change in a few months - from September 1 the M3 LR will cost $76k D/A in NSW due to price cuts and the stamp duty exemption for EV’s under $78k. The SR+ will be $59.5k D/A as it will also be eligible for a $3k rebate from the NSW government.
@@jonathanbaker2215 In NSW, you get an additional $3k rebate for EVs under $68k as well as free stamp duty for EVs under $78k - Tesla doesn’t show these on their website
Superchargers are not most convenient. Charging at home is by far what most people do and the most convenient. Never having to think about charging except for road trips, that is the way to go. Battery low in the evening? Plug in and start fresh next day, every day.
I drive a BMW M2 and I was indifferent to the Tesla brand. Until my wife bought a Model 3 long range. It has exactly the same performance as my car and is much more comfortable. Secretly, I look for reasons to join her on jaunts around town.
Good impartial review of the model 3. Here in the UK I have a SR+ and road tax is £0, insurance is £210 and electricity for 14,000, at 5p/kw, is £200/year. So basically a very cheap car to run indeed and if your a company car driver there are big tax saving too. I have to say it's the best car I've ever owned and it will take some years before other company's catch up given the super-charger network!
All these amazing benefits will be for the initial users... A few years down the line governments will be introducing all sorts of taxes/payment schemes, whatever it may be to recoup lost revenue. Governments are not going to wave goodbye to petrol and diesel related revenues. Just not going to happen.
I reckon there's a case for the Standard Range+ as being the sweet spot. It still goes like stink with a high 13s quarter mile, is $20k cheaper than the long-range and weighs a fair bit less at 1650kg
@@MrBenHaynes Disagree. In the UK price difference isn’t that much. AWD is more planted and far superior in winter conditions. You get longer range. 0-60 faster. Better sound system. I would say the long-range is the sweet spot of the three. Longer range then the performance, and only a bit slower.

@@MrBenHaynes Agree. Depends on usage. It’s just that I’ve seen quite a few YT videos of people with the SR saying they regretted not getting the LR. In fact I originally ordered the SR but changed to LR. In UK LR About 15% more expensive than the SR, whereas the performance is 50% more expensive than the SR. Significant differences between the SR and the LR. Not so significant between the LR and performance and in fact the LR has better range than the performance. So that was my reasoning in my case. But yes, say for city use etc. in a hot country SR completely sufficient.
You must mention the Height from the ground Is minimal. I had a major problem with my Tesla 3 until shown getting over my driveway as the loan car I was given to use overnight scraped as I came over my entrance driveway. This was a big issue for me until I was shown how to drive the car at 45 degrees over the higher part of the drive to eliminate the scraping. Also minimising the brightness on the screen and less use of climate control unless necessary add miles to the battery efficiency. As a composer of music, the Soundsystem is exceptional.
Thank you for your clear and comprehensive (well mostly) reviews. Could I suggest including ground clearance and height from ground of both front seats. Your older fans find entering and exiting ground hugging cars increasingly difficult.

I think if everything is controlled bu the screen there is a potential where it fails and you can't do anything. The HUD for the driver would be a good idea
The Model 3 (and MY) should have a HUD which displays on the windscreen (not a piece of clear plastic as is fitted to some cars). For the first time, I have a HUD in my current car and it is a tremendous safety item. A recent test drive of a M3 drove home to me how important the inclusion of a HUD would be.
The new small driver's display from the Model S facelift, which may or may not start deliveries soon (we just don't know), would be a good addition for the Model 3.
Who will be the first to drive a Model Y with number plates "MY MY"?, whilst listening to Troye Sivan (My My My!) or if you're a little older Johnny Gill (my my my). I'm more a 90's guy so Johnny blows my hair back (or what's left of it) 😆
Good review, but the warranty is valid for 8 years or 192,000 kms not 240,000 as stated in the video. Also the price of long range is $82k and not $77k mentioned in the video.
I'm planning early (hopefully) for a day in the next few years when my current car dies. I am fairly committed to Tesla Model 3 long range, but secretly hoping another model will be released before I take the plunge (really want that extra display in front of steering wheel - had thought myself before Tom mentioned it, that it is really needed). Also really hoping for government subsidies (I'm in QLD) and maybe even price point reduction due to more competition! Anyone have any idea when a next release might happen? I know the latest has just come out..... Maybe 2024?
Hey guys, a qucik question for the comment section and chasing cars, would you consider the model 3 or a BMW M135i, I know two cars are vastly different to be compared with one another, but their prices are quite similar and so is the 0-100 time, so just curious, cheers
M135i isn’t great. 128ti is an interesting option. Given the choice of what you’ve written I’d go a Model 3 SR+ or a BMW 330i if you don’t care if it’s EV or not
ET5 to dominate the entire entry-to-mid luxury sedan segment no doubt ! If you look at the quality (no gap between panels and no mismatched colors like Tesla cars), interior design and materials used, build quality, craftmanship, utility, range (topping Model 3's long range 334 miles) even in base model of ET5 already provide 341 miles (550 km) per full charge) not to mention highest trim's 1,000 km per full charge that is a whopping 621 miles!, service quality (where Tesla let you wait for months for available parts), upgradable batteries (where Tesla let you have your depleting batteries), exclusive NIO Houses and Places that let you enjoy exclusivity and enjoy time off from other things (which Tesla does not provide any Tesla clubs - you wish), and many other goodies of being an owner of a NIO. This is just no-brainer. I just don't see why Tesla will continue to dominate now that NIO's ET5 has said its "Hello World !"
@@liberfarb They have them installed but don't work. Audi, BMW etc. A oncoming car will see a dipped beam, but you will have full beam. It only dips part of the high beam. Tesla can't do that. Absolutely brilliant to drive with, and definitely worth getting as a option.
VW Beatle and Mini have had a centre speedo since the late 1940's, do they now need a speedo in front of the steering wheel? Seriously, you quickly adapt to the speedo location.
Looking up in Plugshare there is a 6 Stall Supercharger at Eaton Fair Shopping Centre, 2 Recreation Dr, Eaton WA 6232, Australia north of Hungry Jack's. Also RAC Electric Highway has some fast chargers into South West WA Most cost effective charging is at home from solar or cheapest off peak power. Also note some of the Model 3 from China have LiFeP04 batteries which can be charged to 100 % regularly . Original batteries should only be charged to 100% just before you are going to drive.
I have had test drive tesla model 3 performance and the bmw 3 series the only think the tesla is superior is the performance. Interior had crackles, the ride very busy and in high way a lot of noise, not good isolation. Between long range and performance, long range is better and is fast, see carwow video, in Europe 10 thousand euros diference not worth. Drive pleasure is not only about speed and 0-100km/h
If you don't care about the environment then would you get the Tesla Model 3 or a BMW 3 series when spending similar money? (or perhaps spending on a lower spec BMW to make it equivalent given fueling and servicing costs are lower on a Tesla - e.g. A$80k on a BMW, A$90k on a Tesla). I feel that Tom didn't say that explicitly but hinted that the fossil fuel options still win as he would only say that Tesla beats other EVs.
I like the retro style of the Ionic 5, but the Missus likes the modern EV 6. Either way, the 350kw charge rate capacity and Vehicle to Home/Load/Grid capability will be AWESOME. Going to be a lot of obsolescence in the near future. Must be patient. Can I wait for solid state?
There is so much I do like about Tesla vehicles. However, there a a few things I wish they had, or did I better. 1) I wish they all had HUD displays. 2) The fit and finish has always seemed a bit too cheap to me. 3) I feel Tesla gouge too much on pricing. (E.g. that extra $10k self driving package that doesn’t work yet)
I purchased the the performance, which I much prefer over the M340i. Mind blowing performance, the adjusted AWD system, very quick steering, airy cabin (mine is also fitted with the optional white interior), the FSD (which is more about what it will become soon rather what it is now) the ongoing updates... the BMW just feels so 20th century in comparison. You only mention the BMW and Audi to highlight where you feel the Tesla lags and its a shame, as it surpasses them in so many ways. It is much much faster, it is quicker around the bends (feel is subjective), it has better view out, it has soft plastic even on lower part of the door and console that they dont (neither the expensive etron). A disappointing lukewarm review, with an ongoing insinuation that you are just better off buying a German car.
This is actually a positive review, but we don’t need to provide security by labouring every obvious area the ICE rival is worse - sometimes it was stated (Tesla infotainment is vastly superior), and sometimes it is simply clear on the facts (the M3LR makes vastly more power than a 330i, it doesn’t need to be meted out in chapter and verse - they’re numbers). Ultimately, we make balanced reviews that provide fact, and educated opinion for the subjective elements, rather than uncritical reports designed to provide post-purchase validation. I’m sure you’re enjoying the Model 3 Performance and you should, because it’s a great car, but there certainly are areas where it remains bested by traditional rivals. Handling balance and steering feel are just two.
@@chasingcars yup we will disagree. The Tesla is superior in handling, than the BMW, as for the A4/S4 it isn’t that great handling wise and feels way more FWD, because they are more. Lower center of gravity, larger engine on the rear axle, not great but ultra direct steering. I think evo magazine put it best, it is a different experience but just as good if not better. I agree with them. Something tells me all the media persons will change their tune when it is now Tesla...
There’s no bias against Tesla here, and we simply have different interpretations of what makes superior handling. Personally I back my own view and make no apology for that. Have a good night!
This review is really back to front. Why not start out by talking about what this car is like to drive, ie, is it a nice experience, what is the acceleration like, how does it handle. Instead we get all this blah about everything else. Good to know, but later, a lot later please. Very weird!!!!!
I'm guessing that fiddling with that screen whilst rolling is nearly as dangerous as doing it with your phone. Operating it almost requires a new sort of licence. Imagine an 80 year old driving along........and trying to figure the thing out!!
@@chasingcars Yeah.......I just think for some people, it may present as a challenge. I still drive a car without a screen and haven't come that far yet so am yet to experience it in practice, only to say:- whilst driving it has to be as quick and user friendly as possible so not to distract the driver for longer than is safe.😃👍
JD Power has Tesla, namely the model 3, as the most unreliable brand/car for 2020 with 250 problems per 100 cars. It's not the most perfect study but it is considered industry standard. Tesla has been put on notice by Chinese regulators for quality issues, consistent problems with German authorities and mass recall's in the United States over display issues. This could very well be one of the most risky purchases available in the Australian car market. Am questioning why quality issues were not brought up in this review.
Tesla quality issues are well documented, and I’m pretty sure I did talk about the various rattles and finish issues this test car had. As for JD Power, we’re not allowed to just use other companies’ data in our content for free, of course.
About the only thing comparable between this and an Audi e-tron or the Mercedes EQC is that they are all EV’s! If anything a Model X would be their competitors and the Model X is more expensive and questionable as to its quality.
That being said cheaper than a combustion engiine over 5 yrs if you have 10kw solar power on your roof and save hundreds each year on maintenance. not to mention if petrol keeps going up ;-)
EV's are taking over :( 508km range is not sufficient for the class of car it is, and its (petrol driven) competitors in the same class are more suited to our country Australia. Guess this Tesla looks pretty cool, pity it misses out on crucial basic driving features we've had in petrol driven cars for 100's of years.
Years away before that happens!🥱 Hybrids are taking more of a foothold over EV’s & obviously more suited to Australia’s vastness. Even the so called ICE are becoming more efficient & probably due to the EV’s slowly appearing a little more frequently.
Battery technology is rapidly developing the range will come. That said, the majority of cars in Australia don't usually drive very far. You're not going to run out of juice, especially if you're able to charge at home.
@@asjeot That's correct as when I found Australians are willing to buy a 2.0 NA petrol car, I realised that most Australians don't usually drive very far.
@@asjeot That’s a city centric comment re Aussies not driving far. For those that travel interstate often, unless covid rules, the range needs to be more like 800km+! Having said that I believe the so called Ford “Mustang” Mach E has such a range.
EVs are the future, no doubt. But they just don't appeal to me one bit. Has no soul nor character. Feels like you're driving a microwave. Will stick to my internal combustion engines as long as I can, until we have no choice 😅

I just don't see why Tesla will continue to dominate now that NIO's ET5 has said its "Hello World !"
glad you didn't call the front compartment FOOT 😄
*The car has New headlights and batteries have higher density.*
Matrix headlights that don't work as matrix headlights.
@@Robert-cu9bm Why Robert ?

They have them installed but don't work.
Audi, BMW etc. A oncoming car will see a dipped beam, but you will have full beam.
It only dips part of the high beam.
Tesla can't do that.
Absolutely brilliant to drive with, and definitely worth getting as a option.
@@Robert-cu9bm I dont understand why they havent done it on a Tesla . Even Skoda octavia has Matrix lights nowdays

I know, Tesla's have the most advanced tech they tell me.
They don't even have cross traffic alert.
VW Beatle and Mini have had a centre speedo since the late 1940's, do they now need a speedo in front of the steering wheel? Seriously, you quickly adapt to the speedo location.
Tesla ride quality is exceptionally rough compared to other EV (such as EQC, IONIC and BYD)
Sheesh did you go around in a circle route for the whole video??😂
Less cross hand turning would be much more safe
I need this in my life!
i agree technology is insane and in my country echen u have a tesla ur rich as loll
"...that being said" :-) Sorry, had to. Great review nonetheless.

Always good to have balance
Kou Tou Chan (pet phrase, or habitual words). Most people have one (or two).
Are there there sufficient supercharges In bunbury and Western Australia?
To be honest, I'm not familiar with the situation in WA. Quite plentiful on the East Coast, though.
Looking up in Plugshare there is a 6 Stall Supercharger at Eaton Fair Shopping Centre, 2 Recreation Dr, Eaton WA 6232, Australia north of Hungry Jack's.
Also RAC Electric Highway has some fast chargers into South West WA
Most cost effective charging is at home from solar or cheapest off peak power.
Quite fair.
Tom Baker driving down Baker St. Not sure if that was intentional 😂
Has the Model 3 ever faced a braking failure in Australia? Such failure must be electronic issues that caused the braking pedal is too hard to press.
I'm not aware
Conjunction limit exceeded
If you don't care about the environment then would you get the Tesla Model 3 or a BMW 3 series when spending similar money? (or perhaps spending on a lower spec BMW to make it equivalent given fueling and servicing costs are lower on a Tesla - e.g. A$80k on a BMW, A$90k on a Tesla). I feel that Tom didn't say that explicitly but hinted that the fossil fuel options still win as he would only say that Tesla beats other EVs.
I can hear the wind noise
Can’t wait to see the Kia EV 6
True.
@@MrBenHaynes you don’t have to ben . Just buy a Tesla now and get a solid state battery for your second pack at 150 k
When it is not Tesla
There’s no bias against Tesla here, and we simply have different interpretations of what makes superior handling. Personally I back my own view and make no apology for that. Have a good night!
@@chasingcars good night

Why is the wheel on the wrong side?

Yes "that being said" was said too many times...
OK
This review is really back to front. Why not start out by talking about what this car is like to drive, ie, is it a nice experience, what is the acceleration like, how does it handle. Instead we get all this blah about everything else. Good to know, but later, a lot later please. Very weird!!!!!
I'm guessing that fiddling with that screen whilst rolling is nearly as dangerous as doing it with your phone. Operating it almost requires a new sort of licence.
Imagine an 80 year old driving along........and trying to figure the thing out!!
To be honest the screen is really intuitive once you learn it. Is it any worse than the Germans burying commands in menu after menu? I don't think so.
@@chasingcars
Yeah.......I just think for some people, it may present as a challenge. I still drive a car without a screen and haven't come that far yet so am yet to experience it in practice, only to say:- whilst driving it has to be as quick and user friendly as possible so not to distract the driver for longer than is safe.😃👍
@@noelgibson5956 Make no mistake Noel, screens in cars ARE a distraction.
Since Australia has become so camera friendly speed camera friendly how hard is it to modulate your speed with no noise in a car
Still plenty of road noise.

make tesla model x
@@sjwright2 I.e. negative bias
About the only thing comparable between this and an Audi e-tron or the Mercedes EQC is that they are all EV’s! If anything a Model X would be their competitors and the Model X is more expensive and questionable as to its quality.

EV's are taking over :(
508km range is not sufficient for the class of car it is, and its (petrol driven) competitors in the same class are more suited to our country Australia.
Guess this Tesla looks pretty cool, pity it misses out on crucial basic driving features we've had in petrol driven cars for 100's of years.
Really looking forward to having the Volkswagen ID.4 in Australia which is a pretty hot sale car in America and Europe.
