This was exactly the video I was looking for. You did a great job! Thank you
Earned my sub with this. Thank you for the comparison!
Great vid! My MYLR is going to be delivered in two weeks. Too early for your review, Tesla now offers a Acceleration Boost upgrade for the LR. That will be the first download after I take delivery. Increases the 0-60 time to 4.2 or 4.3 depending on which reviewer you follow. 4.2 is plenty fast for me. The extra range is too valuable to give up in exchange for the YP. Plus, my wife really disliked the Performance test ride as it was pretty stiff and rough on our 70ish bodies. Thanks again. Fun vid!
The absolute best side by side comparison between the two. I drove both and noticed the lowered height of the P. The LR has plenty of grunt and while the P is a faster car, the LR is no slouch, has enough power for an everyday car. Thank you for putting this excellent dish l video together!! Loved it.
$2k software acceleration boost upgrade is worth it for long range for me coz LR has 7 seats
honestly even RWD is fast enough
When your passenger hits the water bottle you need to floor it. Never gets old.
Gjeebs all love from Slovenia
Love it! Thanks for the support!
Excellent, detailed video. You are one of the most thorough Tesla owners I’ve watched on You Tube. Your detailed explanations of the various features, differences, etc, etc, are helping me make my decision to buy a Model Y. Thanks so much and keep it up.

Great video man! Ordered my Y performance and you guys are hyping me up! 🤙🏾
Congrats man!
Great job guys! I ordered my Model Y already still waiting on it. This is a great video. Keep doing what you’re doing!
Plenty on the way!
You guys are awesome. Thanks for the video. Can't wait for the Model Y to arrive in Europe!
Great video, as always! You guys make a great commentary duo.
Haha, we have been buddies for a long time
Not a Tesla owner yet but find your videos very useful - loved the slo mo sequence.
This is the exact video I’ve been looking for for weeks. Such a good side by side comparison of the two helping me decide between the Long Range or the Performance. I’ve been leaning towards LR and I think this solidified my decision. Thank you!
Glad it helped! I figured a lot of people were wondering the same thing
I’m also debating. Financially the LR makes sense - especially for the value. But then again, I keep thinking to myself that I only live once and when will I ever own a family car what can accelerate 0-60 in 3.5s...
@@Wasabi9111 My thought is this: I bought the LR, I'd love the P, but the cost difference in both the upgrade and wheels I just couldn't justify. In 5-8 years when I plan to upgrade, the EV market will be completely different, and acceleration + range will be so much better for cheaper.
@@dkononen you’re right - especially how quickly the tech is advancing!
@@Wasabi9111 there's also a new $2000 upgrade which makes the LR 0-60 from 4.8 to 4.3 seconds. Have you considered getting that upgrade?
Actually very informative video, the stuff about tinting was something I was looking into.
I wanted to quickly reach out and inform you that we currently have some

For what it's worth, the Geminis look way better without the caps, so you can get a better look and still get better performance and comfort - or even go 3rd party and for the same price as the larger rims, have two sets of wheels for the same price and set one up with summer/performance tires.
Thanks for the video. Helped me in clearing few of my doubts in choosing between Long range and the Performance Y

Really enjoy this video. Good on capturing different angles of the model Y
Glad you liked it!
Excellent review. Thanks for sharing!
The Performance Model Y is something special -- test drove it to compare to my Model 3 SR+ and it was night and day in terms of 0-60
Hey Gjeebs, thanks for this video. Can you comment on how the long range would keep up with the performance at higher speeds like 30-100mph or 50-100mph. how much farther ahead would the performance model be or would it be very close? thanks..
Used your referral link to order my Model Y. Thanks for this video. It helped me decide on getting a LR Model Y instead of the performance. I appreciate the 1,000 miles of supercharging I got using your link. 5-9 weeks for delivery. Looking forward to my first Tesla.
How long did it actually take for the car to arrive? I just ordered my model y performance today. It gave me the same window of time just want to see what others are getting. Tia
@@123cops It took 9 weeks to arrive. Seemed longer though.
Perfect video comparison, I would take the long range dual motor but all the little bits make the performance tempting. The sun shade is a must have or I drive round squinting and frowning, really glad they have them!
Enjoyed the competition from stop to speed. Would love to see a rolling run from 55 mph to say 80 mph. This would simulate passing time on a back country road.
Yet another awesome Model Y video. Thank you for convincing me that my first Tesla doesn't have to be a performance model Y. :-)
It's really hard to not try justifying going for the bling one. I'm doing everything to convince myself that I don't need the performance.
Guys there's 2k$ performance upgrade software official from tesla that makes long range quicker from 4.8 to 4.2 seconds.
@@dmitriibob oooh I thought that was just for the model 3 for some reason! Thanks for this
That just means get the performance
Thanks. I'm looking to buy Model Y, this clarifies which one to pick...
Great video for what it was. An honest comparison by car guys. I love the videos and commentary with the difference in acceleration of the performance. I have driven both and wow the performance is out of this world. The long range is still stupid fast. In Michigan though pot holes swallow cars in all seasons so I might have to settle on long range and pray they release a $2000 performance pack unlock or something like they did with the 3. I don't need the brakes or the suspension. I just want that occasional straight line buh--bye!!
Very good comparison. Great job
Awesome comparison! Keep up the good work!
I wanted to quickly reach out and inform you that we currently have some

Curious what you’d think about the acceleration boost vs the performance in terms of how close the performance feels and also the difference in performance between the regular MYLR without it
Nice video. Do you know if the headlights are led matrix for the USA version ? I’m shooting for the performance version and I’m wondering if they now come with upgraded headlights. Thanks!
Awesome video! 🙌🏼
Are the Performance wheels more expensive to replace?
Thanks 😊
Yes they are
Thanks great information!
I purchased the MY LR for the same reasons that you mentioned: longer range, better ride quality. And I used the savings for not getting the performance model to pay for the full self-driving option.
Smart!
I did the exact same! @Roger Li
@@leviolson Yeah, also I’m planning to keep the car for a long time (10+ years). The cost of FSD will be reasonable over time. Who knows, if the FSD’s value increases the way Elon Musk claims, the initial expense would be worthwhile.
I've read that the factory tint is UV and IR protected. Also the double pane absorbs it. I'm still gonna tint when I get my MYP and my wife's MY LR. Still going through your old content while the MYs are being built. Keep up the great content!
My 2017 MX's external A/C Fan/Compressor was very loud in the Texas heat, so much it was audible in the cabin under 30MPH , then replaced by road noise. Also over 65 MPH the wind noise made normal conversation challenging. Is MY's A/C system adequate in cooling? Noise level? Outside noise soundproofing?
Great video. Thanks. Yep, the AC works great. I live in Los Angeles and I've never touched the glass top without it being really hot, even when the AC is keeping it cool inside. But yeah, the roof window seems ...maybe superfluous. Seems odd for a company like Tesla to install a permanently on hot plate inside their car.
I'm an old guy, never even considered racing (though I knew a Class 3 driver, amazing road handling abilities so definitely a good skill to have even within the speed limit) and I'd been driving a Prius V. So getting in the Y was like Super-Car Time! I was at a light and a new Corvette pulled up next to me; I couldn't help but think, "Should I let this guy know if it was speed he wanted... you bought the wrong car buddy...."? Fortunately I behaved myself. Later I looked it all up on the net. My Long Range Model Y gets 0-60 in 4.8 seconds, his Corvette does that in 2.7 seconds. So I would've experienced a nice roar, a blur and then being pulled over by the cops. My son's Audi 4.3, same as the Performance Y.
So, not a supercar, but still pretty amazing.
If I have anything at all to say to you guys about how wheels look compared to how they drive. In terms of performance, it's either function or it's just bunk. In high school all the rich kids got new Mustangs. I got my dads 9 year old Ford F-100 pick-up, rusting out (the bed was held up with a 2x4 frame I made), but the same 289 V8 engine and the Mustangs. I wasn't afraid to actually drive it, and I had a lot of clearance. I slammed it around in the gravel parking lot, spun up mud. I didn't even realize I was subverting the prissy car order until another kid told me that until I made pick up trucks look cool he hadn't driven his to school. For me form didn't follow function, function was the only consideration. (Shelby never said, which of these two is cooler looking, he only said, which one is faster?) I also bought the Y for all wheel drive. I snow camped in my Prius and loved it. But the Prius has the control and traction of a marble on glass in snow. The Y should do much better.
Performance and Range. I did a 200 mile round trip to Santa Barbara, dropped the range about 246 miles. I was a bit zippy, and a bunch of 75 mph, so those range numbers are based on driving the Y more like you'd drive a Prius.
Your side to side comparison is the first time I thought the Performance model was significantly different from the Long Range. Tesla has an offer that for an extra $2k my 4.8 sec 0-60 could be 4.3. Zero interest - until I saw your video. It is significant and looks like a lot of fun.
k
Thank you so much of the side by side review. Wow, didn't realize how much a diff performance was in acceleration. The fact that you both smile every time you punch it never gets old. I live in a major city with lots of bumps/potholes. I heard 20/21" wheels are prone to flats on bad pavement so I will be getting the 19" wheels for smoother ride. That's more important to me than 0-60 acceleration. Arizona has lots of open roads so performance might be better in that situation.
@6:00 love that its playing classical music with a tupac album thumbnail
Great comparison, do you think they will add track mode to the performance Model Y?
Who did you get the sunscreen from? Great review. My Long range come on September 20
I have it linked in the description
Great review guys! Spot on. Same realizations about EVs for us over the years. Also... 2 years, family of 4 and no issues with Jean transfer, or other stains on our white seats - still gorgeous - we love our white on white Model 3.
Good to hear!
Thanks, yesterday I ordered a MY LR white/white
Really enjoyed the comparison. I prefer my standard range with inductions 🤘
excellent review. Thanks guys

Good Reason performance w performance pkg is staggered as in mine, maybe not so for performance wo the pkg
Really interesting video. What about the audio system? Is there any upgrade for the Performance version? Thank you.
sound systems are the same
I just ordered a model y performance . . Thanks for the video, I was wondering the difference between the ride of the two.
All good points. I was literally ready to by long range but made a last second decision for performance.
The price differential was 3k in my case for the respective cars in inventory markdown at the time (long range grey with 18” wheels)
One aspect I didn’t see noted is future resale value.
I would imagine the performance will command a much better resale value?
Best video so far of the true differences between the two. Changed my mind about a long range. Now I want the performance. If that is too steep I might get the M3 Performance. Then there is also a possibility of getting the long range with the performance upgrade, if they ever make that available for the Model Y.
Great vid!
My Model 3 is a Long Range Dual Motor (non-performance), just like your Y. My Tesla App has an "upgrade" section that allows me to buy an "acceleration boost" for 2 grand. It changes the 0-60 from 4.4s to 3.9s. Has Tesla unlocked that feature for the Model Y? If so, that may be a fun thing to upgrade to.
Not yet. Apparently it is coming.
When I was test driving, I found the ride comfort to be very different in the driver's seat vs front passenger seat vs back seat, declining in quality in that order. I have test driven the MYLR19, MYLR20, and MYP and ended up ordering the MYLR19 for the ride comfort. I have a loop that goes around my community that has everything from straight smooth roads to bumpy roads, turns, railroad tracks, and potholes. IMO, when you're buying a family car, especially for a new family, the back seat ride needs to be smooth or the baby won't be sleeping ever.
I love the look and power of the MYP and I had given thought to ordering it then adding the UP Luxury Coilover Suspension Kit, but didn't want to take a $10k leap of faith. On the rare chance the opportunity came up, I'd be interested in a back seat ride quality comparison between a stock MYLR19 and an MYP with the UP Luxury Coilover Suspension Kit.
Interesting. So the 2019 model had better ride comfort than the 2020 model? I would suspect they would have improved the ride comfort for a new model but perhaps not?
@@Tanax13 no sorry that was the wheel size. 19" wheels were the most comfortable. 20s and 21s declined in comfort
@@Hossy923 Oh, right! Of course, that makes way more sense :D
I bought a Long Range Y with FSD. After purchase I’ve added original spoiler ($300 from eBay), then added caliper covers ($160 Chinese version- super sick), wrapped with matte PPF (did it myself) and added lower graphics. Car looks super good. I’m now waiting for Tesla release $2k speed boost for the Y as they did for the M3. Also, $3k “discount” is not a discount, but a permanent price reduction. If you want to have more range with a performance model, you can simply switch your 21” heavy wheels for the 19” non performance wheels.
Lol, then you can simly visit hell while you are driving. Changing wheels if you have performance it is a safety issue
You did a gr8 review. Thank you very much! I am at the same dilemma YP vs YLR. Question, once you are running at 60-70 mph in a highway, will you notice a difference when speeding to pass a car, or the difference is just noticeable when accelerating from a complete stop? I only could test the 0-60 part, I could not go into a highway. The difference between the 3.5 and 4.8 sec is stunning, Wondering what happens when you are already running at 60-70 mph and you accelerate
When I am at highway speeds I easily overtake other cars the performance just does it quicker. I think you would be happy in either
Stop listening to Gjeebs about LR and P getting close after 60 miles /h
The difference is stunning like you said even after 60-70 mph
Are you going to get the Tesla Model Y Acceleration Boost Upgrade that was just released?
Thanks for a great video! I was undecided which one to get. I drive 34 miles to work, so the long range will be just fine for me.

Awesome video, will probably settle for LRawd because of the range factor.

Heard tinting the roof may possibly cause it to crack in extreme sun/heat (i live in Orlando), is that true?
Is there a difference in materials from the black seats to the upgraded white? I thought the 1k upgrade was just the color.
Great informative video
Glad it was helpful!
Could you talk about the tire wearing for both size of wheels?
If you get the 3rd row in the y non performance, do both rows of seats lay down completely flat? Thanks

@ Gjeebs / Great review, you mentioned you got $3000 off, what type of promotion is that?
I believe he's referring to the $3000 price cut that Tesla had on the Model Y's a couple month ago
Im going to be cranking out!
Nice vid! What is the roof sunshade, seems no longer on Amazon. Do they all have clips?

Hey Arizona. If you are going to do a comparison you need to now the pistons on brakes for each vehicle.
Both LR and performance use Brembo brakes, performance uses a larger 4 pot piston and grippier pads.
Since the seats and the overall car is modular, would replacing a bumper after 8 years be cheaper than PPF?
We opted for the LR due to range and cost. If Tesla had sold the Performance without the Performance Upgrade at a lower price between the price of the LR and Performance (like they should have), then we would have probably gotten it. I'm hoping Tesla will offer an acceleration upgrade on the LR in the future.
Yes, Tesla seems to have deliberately neutered 0-10MPH, probably for component wear/stress. The Model S hits much harder in that zone (chest thump). After 10MPH in the 3/Y you feel a second-level pull, where the G-forces are enough to give some vertigo. Good video. )
Enjoying your channel. Unfortunately Model Y is still not available in New Zealand, and no one has an idea when they will be.
In the UK their are rules on tinting Windows so need to check that out.
What the difference in the long range upgrade for $2,000 as far as speed compared to the performance, I would like to see that!! It’s all software so is it worth the $2,000? I have the the long range...
Great review! Do you have experience with the acceleration upgrade for the long range version? How does it compare to the performance? Does it reduce the reach?
I've driven a Y with it and you can tell a difference but it's minor. I personally don't think it's worth it but that's up to you. Very cool software can make your car faster
Difference of autonomy in "normal and real" use? Thanks
Great video !! Let’s see some races!!
Great review! Just curious, if you didn't have a family and kids would you opt for the model 3 over the model Y?
I don’t have kids. My wife wanted a car that sat higher that was the main factor
What is the exact real time range difference with long range and performance on average? Is it like 50 kilometers?
Awesome videos! Long question/comment about the extreme heat since you're in Phoenix. We're looking forward to purchasing a model Y too but we're in TX (obviously get a ton of intense heat too). We'd be charging in our garage and we don't have AC in there. Needless to say, it gets HOT in the garage, especially in summers (as it does in AZ). I saw your video installing the NEMA 14-50 and maybe that's where this comment belongs, but since you're talking about heat here I figured this would work. I couldn't tell from your garage setup if you have AC or any sort of ventilation (but from the looks of it it seems similar to mine). Would you mind please sharing if the Tesla automatically stays on and is running pretty frequently in your garage, just trying to keep the temp down for the battery or interior, and if you have any sort of ventilation? Do you just leave your garage door open all day? Night? I could be completely wrong but I'm imagining some weird loop at night where the Tesla is plugged in charging in the garage, the garage is so hot that the Tesla kicks on the cooling, and since the battery is using energy to cool itself it just makes the environment slightly hotter. Not sure if that even makes sense. But it's this weird loop I'm concerned about since our garage doesn't have AC or any ventilation other than just leaving the garage door open or cracked. Not only incredibly hot in there in the day, also sometimes even very warm throughout the summer nights. I know a lot of people in TX own Teslas but I have no clue what their garage setup is (maybe they have AC in the garage or some superior ventilation system) so I thought I'd reach out. Thanks in advance!
Mine has no AC just two vents. It gets very hot but there are no charging issues so far. You should be fine
@@Gjeebs Great, thanks! We may look at the cost for venting it. Thank you.
@@jeffreygardner7512 Before I moved to an apartment that gave me free Tesla charging in a vented garage, I thought it would be a fun project to build a water cooling setup for my Tesla Charger, as long as I didn't kill myself
The Weekend Driver 😳
Subbed after that 3s intro lol
I took a few friends for some quick rides in my '21 3 Performance and 2 of them yelled some expletives, the 3rd literally screamed all the way up to 80MPH haha! Wish I'd been recording.
ALmost....alllmost got the 21' M3P as well but decided I could just boost it as I got more intuned with the car and wanted to sit up higher with more space for stuff as I love the look of the hatch and top glass. Maybe I'll get one of those soon too!? lol
I’m so curious about handling /comfort say compared to an X3 X5
CANT WAIT TO BUY ONE. Tesla will def be my first car.
Ok I had LRY and now own MYP. The #1 aspect is the suspension and cornering. You can add acceleration boost to LRY which gets you to 4.2. But the handling and cornering and steering is night and day. Not sure why that obvious difference was not highlighted but if you’re on the fence and you like to drive? Get the MYP. Hands down a more capable vehicle.
Update: traded MYP and kept LRY. Overall softer ride and longer range made the choice. The 21” wheels are too stiff on long rides. I replaced and instead got 20” Uberturbine from M3P.
Have you stayed with the 21" wheels?
My main concern is popping tires on a pothole during a long road trip.
@@Nelson_Ocampo so actually no. I decided to go with LRY and mounted 20” M3P Uberturbine wheels. The 20” wheels allow for 255/45/20 Tires which add comfort. Best decision I’ve made so far.
Yeah, that's what I would end up doing...just get the Boost and be done with it for a few years until they come out with something even more special.. plus Air Suspension?? lol In fact, coming from a BMW X3, I think my MYLR handles and corners just admirably for a vehicle its size and far less jarring on bad roads with my 20"s Good stuff!
Thanks, this has been extremely helpful. I have had a Performance model S for 3 years and of course ordering a performance Y will speed up your delivery time. I want to have a tow hitch on the back.. I don't see that the height is an issue with a bike rack on the back. I think I am going with the Long Range and wait a little. I think the replacement cost of the tires and the potential of me curbing those beautiful wheels is high. So, Model Y long range it is. I already ordered a few weeks ago, but thought about upgrading due to delivery estimates.
I had the same decision making dilemma's a few months ago... ended up changing my LR to the Performance and sooo happy I did, delivery is today! I'm still not convinced the performance is worth the additional cost, but aesthetically I love the look of the low profile vs the standard height. I too think the replacement tire costs will suck as will the day "my wife borrows my car and curbs the hell out my rims" lol. Good luck on your decision though!
Thank you for this video really well done! No offense, but I thought the performance pulled away a lot harder than that. So what would the difference be with the acceleration boost option and the long range? Would the performance version still have another 25 or 50 horse? It seems like a lot of money for 50 hp, on the other hand, you can’t argue how easy it is to add! I don’t agree that there’s a huge transformational difference in looks with the slightly larger wheels, but we’ll see the Gemini 19s do not look great at all. What’s wrong with the turbine style 19 and more comfort range, and curb rash protection? 😱
Thanks for your referral code!
You got it! Enjoy your Tesla!
Are you happy with the white exterior color? I hear Tesla has had difficulty matching the white color on the exterior panels. What do you know about the newer white Y’s color quality?
I wouldn’t say it’s Lexus or Mercedes quality paint work but it’s not bad. In different light you might be able to tell there is a slight difference between the panel that is plastic in the panel that is metal. You have to really look closely and the average person would never notice. In the past Tesla had a lot of problems with this but they have recently fixed the issue in the factory from what I can tell
could you measure the ground clearance of the two of them?
I just ordered my LR model Y I’ll come in the end of June. Thank you so much for your information.
About to head to Tesla now to trade in my 2021 MYLR 7 Seater in for a 2022 MYP, shoulda got the P from the start!
Just want to know your thoughts about the full self-driving option. This added feature now cost $12K. Do you think practicality this would be really useful for a regular driver for the price? Or is this feature just cool to have but does not really get used a lot on a day to day basis?
I have it and honestly barely use it, It’s cool to have and it can be useful but I don’t think it’s needed for the price
