The absolute best side by side comparison between the two. I drove both and noticed the lowered height of the P. The LR has plenty of grunt and while the P is a faster car, the LR is no slouch, has enough power for an everyday car. Thank you for putting this excellent dish l video together!! Loved it.

Great vid! My MYLR is going to be delivered in two weeks. Too early for your review, Tesla now offers a Acceleration Boost upgrade for the LR. That will be the first download after I take delivery. Increases the 0-60 time to 4.2 or 4.3 depending on which reviewer you follow. 4.2 is plenty fast for me. The extra range is too valuable to give up in exchange for the YP. Plus, my wife really disliked the Performance test ride as it was pretty stiff and rough on our 70ish bodies. Thanks again. Great video. Thanks. Yep, the AC works great. I live in Los Angeles and I've never touched the glass top without it being really hot, even when the AC is keeping it cool inside. But yeah, the roof window seems ...maybe superfluous. Seems odd for a company like Tesla to install a permanently on hot plate inside their car.
I'm an old guy, never even considered racing (though I knew a Class 3 driver, amazing road handling abilities so definitely a good skill to have even within the speed limit) and I'd been driving a Prius V. So getting in the Y was like Super-Car Time! I was at a light and a new Corvette pulled up next to me; I couldn't help but think, "Should I let this guy know if it was speed he wanted... you bought the wrong car buddy...."? Fortunately I behaved myself. Later I looked it all up on the net. My Long Range Model Y gets 0-60 in 4.8 seconds, his Corvette does that in 2.7 seconds. So I would've experienced a nice roar, a blur and then being pulled over by the cops. My son's Audi 4.3, same as the Performance Y.
So, not a supercar, but still pretty amazing.
If I have anything at all to say to you guys about how wheels look compared to how they drive. In terms of performance, it's either function or it's just bunk. In high school all the rich kids got new Mustangs. I got my dads 9 year old Ford F-100 pick-up, rusting out (the bed was held up with a 2x4 frame I made), but the same 289 V8 engine and the Mustangs. I wasn't afraid to actually drive it, and I had a lot of clearance. I slammed it around in the gravel parking lot, spun up mud. I didn't even realize I was subverting the prissy car order until another kid told me that until I made pick up trucks look cool he hadn't driven his to school. For me form didn't follow function, function was the only consideration. (Shelby never said, which of these two is cooler looking, he only said, which one is faster?) I also bought the Y for all wheel drive. I snow camped in my Prius and loved it. But the Prius has the control and traction of a marble on glass in snow. The Y should do much better.
Performance and Range. I did a 200 mile round trip to Santa Barbara, dropped the range about 246 miles. I was a bit zippy, and a bunch of 75 mph, so those range numbers are based on driving the Y more like you'd drive a Prius.
Your side to side comparison is the first time I thought the Performance model was significantly different from the Long Range. Tesla has an offer that for an extra $2k my 4.8 sec 0-60 could be 4.3. Zero interest - until I saw your video. It is significant and looks like a lot of fun.

  • @gt88sd
    @gt88sd Год назад +3

All good points. I was literally ready to by long range but made a last second decision for performance.
The price differential was 3k in my case for the respective cars in inventory markdown at the time (long range grey with 18” wheels)
One aspect I didn’t see noted is future resale value.
I would imagine the performance will command a much better resale value?

When I was test driving, I found the ride comfort to be very different in the driver's seat vs front passenger seat vs back seat, declining in quality in that order. I have test driven the MYLR19, MYLR20, and MYP and ended up ordering the MYLR19 for the ride comfort. I have a loop that goes around my community that has everything from straight smooth roads to bumpy roads, turns, railroad tracks, and potholes. IMO, when you're buying a family car, especially for a new family, the back seat ride needs to be smooth or the baby won't be sleeping ever.
I love the look and power of the MYP and I had given thought to ordering it then adding the UP Luxury Coilover Suspension Kit, but didn't want to take a $10k leap of faith. On the rare chance the opportunity came up, I'd be interested in a back seat ride quality comparison between a stock MYLR19 and an MYP with the UP Luxury Coilover Suspension Kit.

I bought a Long Range Y with FSD. After purchase I’ve added original spoiler ($300 from eBay), then added caliper covers ($160 Chinese version- super sick), wrapped with matte PPF (did it myself) and added lower graphics. Car looks super good. I’m now waiting for Tesla release $2k speed boost for the Y as they did for the M3. Also, $3k “discount” is not a discount, but a permanent price reduction. If you want to have more range with a performance model, you can simply switch your 21” heavy wheels for the 19” non performance wheels.

I feel the gap in power lessens when you add the Accel Boost, so I agree, range+20"+Accel Boost+Bit more comfy > Performance with 21"s. As for the one pedal driving, you gotta give it that little extra stop power to keep your rotors clean.
Using the brakes only on rusty rotors will dramatically mess up your brake pads - I've seen some nasty hardly used rotors at the superchargers, you also won't stop as fast as you could in a emergency situation.

@@xoXneoncookiezXox to flip the argument on its head: given that roughly 10K people die each day (globally) from air pollution and air pollution causes (mostly not in the USA, but some still do), not being an advocate for clean air is the passive way of being in favor of childhood asthma, COPD exacerbations, unnecessary hospitalizations and all of the associated costs to all of us, some strokes, heart attacks, and maybe even cancers, etcetera. Best video so far of the true differences between the two. Changed my mind about a long range. Now I want the performance. If that is too steep I might get the M3 Performance. Then there is also a possibility of getting the long range with the performance upgrade, if they ever make that available for the Model Y.

We opted for the LR due to range and cost. If Tesla had sold the Performance without the Performance Upgrade at a lower price between the price of the LR and Performance (like they should have), then we would have probably gotten it. I'm hoping Tesla will offer an acceleration upgrade on the LR in the future.

  • @AjitMD

The Model Y LR makes the most sense because of the longer range, higher ground clearance important with our pothole filled roads, comfort, lower maintenance of tires, rims. The Model Y Performance tires last may be 15,000 miles, need to filed often; rims are susceptible to road rash and cracking which are expensive. Set of MYP tires cost $1,800. Model Y LR tires can last 40,000 miles.

Thanks for the comparison between the two Model Y Tesla's. Amazing how much pickup and speeds these two cars have. Even though the "Performance" model has quicker off the line speed, I guess the top end of the "Performance" model is supposed to be 155 mph vs the "Long Range" model is 135 mph. Both models are very fast in my opinion.
For me, the "Long Range" model would be ideal for me since I am retired and just do driving around town or short single charge trips.
Any of you guys know which is faster, The "Performance" model Y or the Tesla Plaid S model. They both seem to have the same specs for speed. Not sure what you get with the Plaid S model to make it so expensive >100,000 dollars for it.
    Take care.

  • @bujin5455

Great comparison. But I think the wheel selection shouldn't have been as glossed over. What wheel you choose has more to it than simply how comfortable it is, and how efficient it is. A smaller wheel, with a tire that has larger sidewalls, will be more protected against pot holes. It'll be less likely to break the bead of the tire, less likely to damage the wheel. It'll allow for you to let some tire pressure out, to improve winter grip, while providing more safety to the wheel. It'll also be a better choice if you want to do any off road driving. So if you're looking for a payment princess, and you live around good streets, knock yourself out. But if you have terrible streets around you, and you want to go camping out in the woods, maybe think about how much side wall you want your tires to have.

Thanks, this has been extremely helpful. I have had a Performance model S for 3 years and of course ordering a performance Y will speed up your delivery time. I want to have a tow hitch on the back.. I don't see that the height is an issue with a bike rack on the back. I think I am going with the Long Range and wait a little. I think the replacement cost of the tires and the potential of me curbing those beautiful wheels is high. So, Model Y long range it is. I already ordered a few weeks ago, but thought about upgrading due to delivery estimates.

I had the same decision making dilemma's a few months ago... ended up changing my LR to the Performance and sooo happy I did, delivery is today! I'm still not convinced the performance is worth the additional cost, but aesthetically I love the look of the low profile vs the standard height. I too think the replacement tire costs will suck as will the day "my wife borrows my car and curbs the hell out my rims" lol. Good luck on your decision though!

My opinion about the wheels: You may not notice as much difference between the ride between those 2 because of the wheels you chose for the LR. I test drove the LR with standard wheels and then the performance. There was a clear difference in the ride for me. I did not like the ride of the performance. Oddly, the difference in acceleration was not as subjectively apparent to me as the ride quality. The higher ground clearance is important to me for where I live. It does bug me that the better LED headlights are currently not available for the LR.

The only way I see an MYP taking an NSX is if the Acura didn't launch. Anyways, what was said at @3:18, I'm pretty certain most buyers don't care about the color of their brakes, let alone what's printed on them; at least not enough to affect their buying decision. If that's the case, it only makes sense for Tesla to save that $.10 it would otherwise have cost to label the caliper. Ten cents per caliper, two per car (only fronts), hundreds of thousands of cars per year, over eight years for a typical model life cycle... that makes for substantial savings, just by not having "Tesla" on the brake caliper.

The regenerative braking system has nothing to do with the actual brakes and pads. The regen is not an actual brake, it’s a motor that runs in reverse based on the energy of the wheel spinning. My point being, the upgraded brakes DO matter. They actually provide the real stopping power you would need.

Awesome video. You can't get the "stealth" Performance Y anymore, as Tesla took away that option. Now when you order a Performance, you have to take the larger wheels, brakes, suspension whether you wanted it or not. Surprisingly some Y Performance owners are downsizing the tires, if nothing else because 19 or 20 inch tires are a little cheaper than 21 inch ones, especially since the 21's are staggered setup, with the rears being slightly wider.

Great comparison of the two models.
I test drove a LR 3 several times before I got my Performance 3, and the differences are similar to what you show here.
However, on the Model 3, you also get track mode, which unlocks the handling in way most do not expect. But, you have to stop and put the car in park to activate track mode. Once it's on, you loose ALL cruise control functionality, which is annoying. That being said, it really comes down to whether you want acceleration and handling improvements, or lower cost, longer range, and more comfort. It's a really great and simple way that Tesla has packaged the two versions. That being said, I really wish they'd offer 18" or 19" wheels on the Performance 3, and 19" or 20" wheels on the Performance Y.

It's pretty interesting how much importance is placed on looks, like sure, the 19's have a better ride, but the 21's just look so much better. When I drive the car, it's more about the ride than looks. Believe me, I've been down the looks rabbit hole. I had the lowered civic with rolled fenders, low profile tires like rubber bands, headers, cold air intake, electronic valve timing control, short shifter, at least 75 additional psychological horsepower. Then I got wise, and realized all this stuff only got my 0-60 about 1/2 second quicker. OK, time for some real power. Installed the Jackson Supercharger, and had some real power. I could have ripped off the headers, intake, etc, but now I had a fast car that looked cool under the hood. Then the epiphany: to go faster, get a faster car.
Several V6 Acuras later, I got a Performance Model 3, loved the 20 inch wheels, but potholes forced me to get the stealth. 0-60 in a little over 3 seconds will rearrange my anatomy. It cured being deprived of horsepower as a kid. 2018, 4 years, no problems, no gas, no service, just electrons and wiper fluid. I'd really like some 20's with red calipers, but the 20s would pop every week in this area. It looks like your average model 3, but it has track mode, and the Performance Ys assume it's pretty average. A performance Y with increased range is really tempting. Watching what's coming out of Austin and Berlin.
