There's no denying Sailor Moon's impact on the magical girl transformation sequences. No matter how many magical girl series I watch, I never get tired of the transformations.
Sailor Moon literally redefined the genre. Before it, magical girl shows were focused on lighter escapades and slice of life stories. Sailor Moon brought in Sentai elements and the idea of magical girls as superheroes fighting against evil. It was so popular and successful that it became the archetypal example, and now the "traditional" style of magical girl show is pretty rare. I love this video, but I have to say: Madoka's Rebellion transformation (the one you used in the video for Madoka Magica) was probably one of the less creative and interesting ones in the series I personally think that Mami's transformation from the movie and Kyokou's transformation in the Magia Record game is done much better from a visual and narrative point of view, and I do recommend checking them out because they're just really cool lol

Kyoko's transformation in the game is probably my favorite transformation sequence ever. It makes her transformation in the movie look drab in comparison lol

Madoka’s Rebellion transformation is great, but the little details in the transformation only make sense when you’ve watched Madoka Magica and Rebellion.
I agree. Although, I think personally the most interesting transformation in the movie belongs to Nagisa Momoe; hers is just bonkers and really showcases the uniqueness of the mixed-media elements in PMMM’s animation as well as just how abstract their transformations can get.

I wouldn't call utena or anthy Magical Girls... But revolutionary girl utena is such a good show that if you have never watched YOU HAVE TO Srl Is one of the best things ever
id argue that utena falls into a similar camp as madoka magica personally. both are deconstructions of the magical girl genre in very different ways. ive always seen it as madoka is a deconstruction of what it means to be a magical girl while utena deconstructs the tropes within magical girl shows (like sailor moon). sorry for the long comment ive just spent WAY to much time thinking about utena lol
@@river1764 Utena's more a deconstruction of shoujo romances like Rose of Versailles... and fairytales of course. (It's hardly a coincidence that the castle is upside-down...)
@@sumirenatsuda7630 it still has elements of magical girl shows though. obviously they do have a transformation, but also utena is also actively fighting the 'evil' in the world. also pretty sure it has inspiration from sailor moon and was originally meant to capitalize on sailor moons success.

@@anirudhsukigakirei9397 The ending of Utena is excellent, the lack of closure which keeps you thinking and asking yourself what the message was actually makes it stronger rather than weaker. Utena was never a story that you were meant to settle into and close in a satisfactory way, it's a story you're supposed to take with you and think about long after you've seen it. When I first finished Utena, I was 14 years old and I was horrified. "She couldn't become a prince? She was just a girl? Does this mean all girls should just accept their place in society, that misogyny is actually good and just?" And I kept seeking out other people's opinions, and what they said about it wasn't just revealing to me re: the series, but about the world as a whole. For a girl to take the traditional role of a man, she must first accept that that role is okay for any person to play to begin with. A decade later, I'm a man. I'm 24 and I've transitioned, or I'm on an ongoing journey of transition, and this show remains my favourite show of all time, its messages are imo life-changing and 'revolutionary', true to the title. It's a framework for viewing gender and other social systems, power dynamics, abuse and trauma, mental prisons, etc, that you can spend your whole life puzzling out and always discover new angles to explore. The ending plays into that perfectly, it leaves the puzzle open to you.
Honestly surprised Precure didn’t even show up a single time in this video! I was expecting to see at least the original duo of Cure Black and Cure White because duo transformations are uncommon for magical girl transformations, and would’ve added contrast to the other animes shown in the video. Plus, in your video there wasn’t any transformations between 2004 and 2011, and that gap of time would have been perfectly filled with at least 1 Precure one to show that magical girl shows weren’t just dormant for those 7 years (especially since 2004 is when Precure first aired). 😊

Symphogear have some nice transformations, that capture the fighting style and even some individuality of each character, like hibiki doing a classical kata, tsubasa sword focus, Chriss gun kata (with a small homage to grenadier of all animes).
Honestly, the older ones, especially Sailor Moon and Utena were the best! They were simple but wonderful, something that SM Crystal and Eternal apparently didn't understand.

sailor moon is the most dynamic.
Madoka is the most weird on.
And Nanoha is the most questionable on (it shows the most details, by not including the shining body much, but, come one, how did they even managed tha,t with her age?^^).
I can never get over how acrobatic Usagi is in her genshin sequence 😂
Idk, while Sailor Moon is definitely the most iconic, both Madoka and Precure have gotten really creative with transformations. Especially with Magia Record where they really went ham on a lot of transformations
Don't forget these magical girls
- Magical Fairy Persia (1984)
- Akazukin Chacha (1994)
- Wedding peach (1995)

I'm Surprised That You Left Out The Biggest Magical Girl Franchise Ever Precure But It's Understandable. You Were Showcasing The Thematic Evolution Of The Genre And Not The Genre Itself
Thank you for understanding! I focused on showing the changes in the genre rather than listing every magical girl series, but it's a great point! In my next video, I’ll try to include all of them :)

It's sadly how sometimes racism works, some people like or even love other's culture and creations yet discriminate against the people, which is really gross
I'm really sorry you experienced that. Your country and people are great!
Its sad how everyone ignores racism when its not against black people
I'm so sorry you had to experience something like that. There are many of us in America who truly love and appreciate Japan and Japanese people. Please don't think that all foreigners are disrespectful. Some people in this world are simply racist and close minded 🙁 I lived in Japan for several years when I was a kid, but I live in the United States now. Japan will always hold a special place in my heart because it is so nostalgic for me. I can't wait to visit your beautiful country again someday!
@@akiradkcn People barely even do anything when it comes to racism against black people. They just talk for points online but are still racist outside. Black people deal with racism from all other races while at the same time also becoming scapegoats through comments like this. The only reason people even *pretend* to take racism against black people seriously is because of how much they've fought dor equality iver the centuries
I live japan and japanese people. 2001 Kara 2007 made nihon ni sundeimashita. Those who don't like japan are a small group, but they might be louder. Most people live their lives quietly.

Sailor Moon did it best. Hands down. The most beautiful, choreographed and memorable transformations. Other ones are kind of all over the place.
*Precure enters the chat*
@@ThatOneMDFan It came years after Sailormoon and it's transformation sequences were heavily inspired from it.
Magical girls you just gotta love them
yes!
@@kimlingtoro indeeders yes !
So Minky Momo is older than Sailor Moon? Wow. I used to watched Minky Momo on TV back then.
I love this video, but I have to say: Madoka's Rebellion transformation (the one you used in the video for Madoka Magica) was probably one of the less creative and interesting ones in the series
I personally think that Mami's transformation from the movie and Kyokou's transformation in the Magia Record game is done much better from a visual and narrative point of view, and I do recommend checking them out because they're just really cool lol
You should check out the Blue Reflection Ray Anime. And play the Blue Reflection, Second Light and Sun games. I highly recommend this magical girl series.
Kyoko's transformation in the game is probably my favorite transformation sequence ever. It makes her transformation in the movie look drab in comparison lol
@@Commenter839 7:14 I recommend you to check out the Blue Reflection Ray Anime. And play the Blue Reflection, Second Light and Sun games. Please try them. It's a fun Magical Girl series.
Princess Tutu is amazing for a lot of reasons but the blissfully short transformation sequence is still one of them.
There's also anime called Saint Tail, Tokyo Mew Mew, Kamikaze Kaito Jeanne and Full Moon o Sagashite.
In this video, I looked at how magical girl anime has changed over the decades, showing up to 3 series from each one. The date for the Madoka Magica transformation is incorrect; that's from the 2013 movie not the 2011 anime :)

I wouldn't call utena or anthy Magical Girls...
But revolutionary girl utena is such a good show that if you have never watched YOU HAVE TO
Srl Is one of the best things ever
Utena can transform into a car bro
id argue that utena falls into a similar camp as madoka magica personally. both are deconstructions of the magical girl genre in very different ways. ive always seen it as madoka is a deconstruction of what it means to be a magical girl while utena deconstructs the tropes within magical girl shows (like sailor moon). sorry for the long comment ive just spent WAY to much time thinking about utena lol
@@river1764 Utena *thinks* she's fighting the 'evil' in the world...through most of the series, anyway.
I'm pretty sure you're right that it was originally meant to be more like a magical girl show and capitalize on Sailor Moon's success. I'm sure I've read that somewhere. The concept shifted though. I seem to recall that the idea of the duels and Anthy didn't come up until later, although I could be misremembering that.
i'm eagerly awaiting the final project. i love magical girls
the ojamajo doremi series is a classic for me and i'm excited to see it soon
I think the best one is Sailor Moon transformations. In 2024 when he specific transformation lost the copyright thing, others started using a very similar transformation style. Suicide Squad, Fairy Tail, etc. There all great, but you can easily see where they got the inspiration from.
Yes! The classic 2D transformations felt so magical, and the new 3D style in Sailor Moon Crystal just doesn’t capture the same charm
Nada que ver bro, ni sailor moon fue el primero xd

Awesome video!
is this my sign to watch utena
Absolutely, watchi it now!
Warning: It has a sh!t ending.
@@anirudhsukigakirei9397 that’s one of the most befuddling takes i’ve ever seen
Thank you for pointing it out 😊
Where's Precure?

The transformation in Kamikaze Kaitou Jeanne D'Arc is still my one favorite. It really stood out compared to all other transformations always using the light effect to make the outfit appear
In the next one you should include Yuuki Yuuna!
Sailor Moon's transformation is still #1 and best of the best.
I remember watching the original Cardcaptors back in 2002 and I did started to like this series from Nelvana I just wished it's finally released onto SDBD Blu-Ray at last just like Beyblade, Shaman King, Sonic X, Dinosaur King, Saber Riders and the Star Sheriff and Ultimate Muscle.
Totally! Cardcaptors deserves a proper SDBD Blu-ray release like those other classics
Symphogear have some nice transformations, that capture the fighting style and even some individuality of each character, like hibiki doing a classical kata, tsubasa sword focus, Chriss gun kata (with a small homage to grenadier of all animes).

That Cardcaptor Sakura clip wasn't a transformation, but a finisher.
I wasn’t sure if I should include it or not either 🥲
Honestly, the older ones, especially Sailor Moon and Utena were the best! They were simple but wonderful, something that SM Crystal and Eternal apparently didn't understand.
The Precure series from Futari wa Precure through Wonderful Precure are the most transformations in Magical Girl history of all
One of my favorite transformations of all time is the original version of Mew Mint's. It just captures her character and love for dancing perfectly.
