I love my introduction to band-maid. My daughter was playing them. And I'm sitting there playing my game I just hear this phenomenal music. I was like who the hell is that. I'm telling you when she flipped that screen around and I saw was a bunch of girls playing and little maid outfits I was floored. I've been a fan for a few years now and I know a lot of people have an issue with picking their favorite memory but for me it's simple all of them. They're all masters of their craft. It doesn't hurt that they're all beautiful. I've not heard a bad song from them yet.

It's amazing how far Miku has come in just a few years. From just holding the guitar as a prop in "Thrill" to this! And kudos to Kanami for rewriting the rythym guitar sections of their old songs to match Miku's increased skill.
You've gotten a number of recommendations to check out "Play"-Live, which I second. One thing you should know is that it was originally an instrumental. Miku was so delighted with it (especially MISA's dominating bass line) that she wanted on their next album. Unfortunately, their label back then refused to do pure instrumentals. So Miku wrote some almost comically simple lyrics for it and got in, anyway.

    • @cembor
      @cembor 4 года назад +5

Great call out. Yeah, since Miku has improved SOOOO MUCH the older songs played now are more rich with Miku's fleshed out rhythm parts. One thing I picked up on from this concert video, seeing them live 5x now, and finally the Shinka concert blu-ray.

After seeing that video for the second time in a few days now I wanna give some - albeit belated - input, as well:
The aggression and attack of the tremolo picking in the pre-chorus makes the tapping sound so much smoother than it already is. They are really good at using such dynamics to enhance the feel of different sections and/or parts in their songs.
The octave lead in the second chorus is actually a third guitar coming in. You can still faintly hear the regular rhythm guitar Miku's playing and actually see her sitting on a chord, while the octaves are moving around. No idea whether she didn't feel up to the part or there's another reason, but I don't care either way. There are some samples sprinkled in their live songs here and there, anyway, so it's just a little fun fact, if you will.
In any case, thank you for getting me hooked on the force of nature that is Band-Maid with their appropriatly Iron Maiden-ish font.
    cheers!

They clearly have this thing of making the songs as dense as possible. Solos are short, transitions are abrupt, songs often end abruptly. Even the pauses between songs in live shows tend to be short or non-existent. That drum solo is in the studio version - she just plays it exactly like that, because that's how it was written to maintain the pace of the song. That's how they roll.

Awesome to see you finally do this. Glad I sent you that DM on Twitter. :)
Yes, they do play with a click track. You mention pedals. Kanami recently did an interview with Eventide on her pedal setup. Not as elaborate as some but still quite elaborate and really gives her that unique signature sound of hers.
    www.eventideaudio.com/blog/emilyjrittenhouse/pedals-pros-kanami-tono-band-maid
Interesting that you bring up Miku's solo. This was really the first time any of had seen a showcase for her really. Now. contrast that little solo she had there against the live version of World Domination you have already done and take both of those and consider that when she formed the band in 2013 she did not know how to play guitar. Watching her progression as a player has been awesome considering her teacher is Kanami. She's turned into a legit rhythm guitarist herself now.
And you mention Misa... what is there to be said about her that probably hasn't already been said. Probably one of the best bassists playing in any band right now, anywhere (and my favorite in the band).
After seeing this song all of the Band Maid fans really started calling out to the band for a real drum solo from Akane and they heard us and answered with the live version of Freedom... which I don't think you've seen yet... and boy, get ready to get your face melted on that one. :)

I've heard that there exist people who whine about Miku (Gt/Vo) not being a good enough guitarist to fit with such a great instrumental power trio. Besides all the other various reasons why those people are wrong, they're wrong because her spot-on rhythm work is exactly what holds these amazing compositions and performances together. It's been more and more substantial and confident over the years. This song spotlights that particularly well - Miku runs forward on a rhythm solo, and then everyone else wraps around that. My favourite moment.

My favorite live song is probably "Take Me Higher" (the 2017 Studio Coast show is the one you want, so here's a link, though it's got some extra graphics added by the person/channel who uploaded it ruclips.net/video/wDVBzo0Q7_w/видео.html). "Don't You Tell ME" is also great, with I think the 2018 Zepp Tokyo performance standing out. "Daydreaming" is probably their best power ballad. "The Dragon Cries" is a newer one lot of people really like, maybe because it's all in (iffy) English, but it's not my favorite. Unsurprisingly considering who produced it, it's pretty old school. Lastly, "Play" from 2017 Studio Coast is the song that hooked me into this band, and it did it within the first 20 seconds of the song. That said, I ADORE the new version from this February's Shibuya show. New lead in with Miku getting a little more of a spotlight than normal, then they hammer into the main song, it's just GREAT. It's the song you can still hear ringing when the "Domination" live video starts up. For whatever reason, BAND-MAID seldom take more than 15 seconds between songs, even on headlining shows. It's kind of exhausting, I don't know how they do that. OH, and the BAND-MAIKO music videos are great, such a great fun gimmick for their fans. Sorry for the epistle.

Really the thing about Band Maid's music is that most of their songs could stand alone as instrumentals mainly due to Kanami's amazing writing and playing...There is always so much musical information going on in everything they do....Pretty sure they do have a click in their monitors as they have some backing tracks and also some video cues...

  • @gregs_music_corner

I've listened to onset so many times, and it never dawned on me that they must play to a click because of the delay..
That would also explain how they pull off all those pre-recorded synths.
As usual, great , constructive comments.

Hi Chase, awesome reaction! I am a fan of yours. Only watch your reaction and 1,2 other. Love UTA and Band Maid so much. Play the Piano and Guitar for more than 20 years myself. I know Akane and MISA are phenomenal but please you have to react to PUZZLE LIVE and see how Kanami plays basically an entire solo thru out the entire song. It's so freaking awesome. She reminds me of Slash, Buckethead, Santana... and I think she is really underrated as a Guitarist. Please give it a try! Also if you like Ballads try Daydreaming and also one of my favourist the non-fiction days. So many good songs from Band Maid and I am sooo happy you will react to more songs from them. Love you analysis and reaction. Keep up the awesome work. You are great. Cheers Lupo

Nice to hear from someone who has a clue. Band-Maid is the most improbable, misunderstood even by a good number of Japanese,
talented, charismatic, compelling and entertaining rock band anywhere in the world for my money. You made some great points that l have yet to read from any other reviewer. Wait til you learn the full story on how this band came to be. Also check out the band's side project of Band-Maiko. Gion-cho is Miku's shout out to her old 'hood. Thank you for helping to support the band. They will be doing a crowdless concert on the 23rd of July here on RUclips. Sacramento loves Band-Maid.

There is doubtless a click, at least at the start, because they play to a computer which contains the backing tracks programmed by Kanami. This is most evident in the Accidents video when things don't go as planned. But they can and have played without the computer. It was delayed, at least once, with their baggage. They just moved some songs around in the set list. They were more concerned with the sneakers they had bought in L.A. than the computer.

I think what I like most about watching your reactions is not just your wry sense of humour or your great turns of phrase (ie, when reacting to Thrill and Misa's solo: "Hang on there, girl, with your bass self" - classic!) but the fact that I learn so much from your explanations and analysis. I love listening to the music but its nice to get educated about what is going on technically to give me those sounds I love. It really enhances the song as it gives me a deeper sense of their skills at songwriting, playing and on stage presence and overall abilities, so thanks for that, man. I see your YT reactions are getting posted on various Facebook Band-Maid sites so hopefully that'll garner you some more subscribers. More Babymetal is always greeted warmly too but, in the meantime, here's a beautiful acoustic version of BandMaid's Thrill you might like - Flamenco/Andalusian style: ruclips.net/video/wkfKOQR_Qmg/видео.html

Since you mentioned the lighting, I played in bands in the '80's and I had to look at the neck enough that fortunately we never had any fancy light shows, just some lights with colored sheets. How do these musicians handle the flashing, the periods of straight-up dark? I mean, I can see that they still look at the fretboard. Did you ever deal with that?
