Wow, this is such a delicate, personal and subtly nuanced version of this aria compared to the more intense Covent Garden. Both staggering and miraculous.
I hope you will also post Teresa Brewer singing "Gonna Get Along Without You Now" from this episode, and Teresa on many other episodes as well! :) Incidentally, this episode appears to be the only Ed Sullivan show that Maria Callas was on.
Apparently, there were plans to have her appear in extended scenes from other operas as well. But the ratings weren't good for this one, so those plans were scrapped.
Yes, it makes her presence so vivid... You definitely can see she's almost blind and all of her facial features are overemphasized by the bad lighting. Great video.
Not as beautiful as Rosa Ponselle but excellent physical acting and she got better physical acting in her later performances though her vocal technique got bad and waned.
Her career after 1960 was indeed unfortunate, but there was a perfect storm of circumstances that led to her vocal decline. It was never a trouble free voice technically...even in the beginning, her sudden weight loss, encountering Onassis, her finally taking a break from her hectic schedule...and probably not practicing, her very early menopause, and a debilitating muscle disease all made it inevitable.
2:32 “…de la Madonna il manto “, what a beautiful musical phrasing just wow
This is opera!

She must have scared the Ozzie and Harriet audience especially during the stabbing
Immediately followed by Topo Gigot. 🤷♀️
She's looking directly into the camera

beauty is subjective
