This is my First time hearing Birgit Sing Vissi D'arte ... I have not the Words her range and depth are Beautifull .... I have just became her newest fan .... Thank God I found Opera late in life but I am making up for it ... Bravo Birgit 💙🙏
The purity of that top note. She doesnt rise to the note like callas did. She takes a small breath then hits it dead centre . The purity takes my breath away. She is the greatest female opera singer ever. The only one to top her was male and he was ofcourse enrico caruso.
I remember seeing her in the audience of Franco Zefferelli's Turandot at the Met. She received a standing ovation from the audience during intermissiom, as she entered the house, and she outshined Elizabeth Taylor who was sitting a few rows ahead of her with Zefferelli. Eva Marton who was singing Turandot had roses thrown to her at the curtain call. She picked them up and threw them at Brigit Nilsson saying "You deserve all the roses". Marton was a class act!
This video is so perfect for everyone to see how she sings with all her body and and mind, every muscle she uses perfectly as how it suppose to be to produce perfect sound. Even that i am not a singer can feel how well she uses her body as instrument.
You're quite right. This is perfect performance. And she sings it as a prayer, which it is - something private between her and God. "I've never done anything wrong, I've been charitable, I've followed the faith, why do you reward me thus?"
wow, how beautifully she sings it. she really feels it. can I see a tiny tear in her eyes? and how modest she is, she passes on the applause that is dedicated to her to the conductor and the orchestra! what a woman!!! 🥰 ❤🎉
So beautiful!!!! Today we can't get one soprano to sing this piece this well never mind this beautifully. The crowd would go nuts today to hear something so incredible today!
I’m italian, i’m opera fan and i work in opera house since 1985: never heard such a voice and such a perfect pronunciation (she was swedish and didn't speak a word of Italian ... but she sang italian heavenly) Her TURANDOT is masterpiece
Her voice is such a beautiful instrument firmly under control. Like a high- powered race car with a master driver. Stunning. Love this and Callas' performance of this great aria.
Where other singers summon every ounce of strength and reserve in order to belt out the high note at the end as if it were some sort of clarion call, Nilsson effortlessly delivers a sublime climax, made all the more poignant and effective by her restraint.
Greatest natural phenomenon singer in history__ Grateful to have seen/heard her live 15 times__ Those who didn’t can’t possibly know what they missed_______ Goddess ______________________________
Never was it better, or more truly, said. To hear her voice was a peak experience in one's life. She was phenomenal-- meaning not one among others, but one and one alone.
The Placidity the prayer, the stillness, the focus, the humility, the surrender, the pleading, the truth the emotion, the effect on us all. Perfection.
OMG what a talent! The godlike gift is only realized a few times in a generation. Lucky for us this rare recording can give the public a glimmer of her incredible voice.
Almost made me cry. I am her biggest fan. She is great abd one of the best sopranos I have heard. Sadly Neveer saw her live because Iwas a Child. But have many records of live recordings and is amazing, specially Turandot, Salomé, Isolde, Brunhilde and Elektra.
I am her greatest fan__ wanna fight?? And should we also fight the millions of others who claim to be her greatest fan?? A goddess__ I saw/heard her live 15 times__ those who didn’t deserve our live and sympathy__ stupendous , the greatest natural vocal phenomenon in history ________________________________|
Incredible voice and technique. What's even more incredible is that she does not place technique ahead of interpretation and complete surrender in the journey and expression of the great composition. This is how it should ALWAYS be done.
There is nothing in music so wonderful, so redeeming when in opera context the climatic phrase exceeds your expectations. Miss Nilson, still enthralled at age 15 from performance at Cincinnati May Festival .
Con man furtiva quante miserie conobbi, aiutai... Nell'ora del dolore perchè, perchè, Signore, perchè me ne rimuneri così? wrong button, Anyway, in Gothenburg, she drowned the orchestra and filled the entire stadium, it was simply overwhelming, she said in an interview that it took her 10 years to find the voice, and an other 10 years to tame it, to a point where she felt totally satisfied, she waited until her late 30ties, in 1959 before she made her Metropolitan debut, and the rest is history, she sang a number of parts before that, around the Opera houses in Europe, it is a mystery how she could produce such power and precision, she discovered her own technic, and kept it as a secret. I don't think there will be a soprano voice like that again, my favorite is the Turandot recording from 1959 with Jussie Bjoerling , made in Rome , two of the best voices coming together.

I can’t remember which Ethel video specifically, but this one is a lot of fun.....Ethel self-mocking her own belting: ruclips.net/video/DgLtRLgVcQg/видео.html
On paper, Birgit Nilsson, known for Wagnerian and Strauss roles doesn't look great for singing Tosca, but when you take the time to listen, the voice is there for Tosca. I don't know if she has the acting skills for the role, but the legitimate dramatic soprano voice of hers is probably something that will never be matched in history
Her technical mastery would have allowed her to tackle most of Puccini (there's a recording of Fanciulla del West), but I think she wouldn't have been at ease with the raw passion of the characters.
Take it from me, I saw her Tosca several times and she was incredible in the role, just as she is here. No OVERACTING, no oversinging. Just an honest portrayal that captivated the moment she came on stage ,
Often forgotten Birgit Nilsson had one of the best and riches soprano voices of the last century, she is missed
You can say A LOT of things about Birgit Nilsson, but that she is often forgotten is definitely not one of them.
Surely very much Remembered. She had no rivals in her time and there has been no one to approach her since.
Can we talk about that gorgeous pianissimo after the Bb? o.O
Beautiful pianissimo❤and diminuendo
Beautiful !
We can, indeed.
In my humble opinion, she possessed one of the most exciting voices that was ever heard.
Agree !!
Agreed...and we don't need to be all that humble!!

She's so famous for having a powerful voice that it's easy to forget how beautiful her voice was. I love this rendition!
this song has nothing to do with power and volume. It's about sentimental feelings
@@corec1991 That is Bagabonda said. Pay attention!
@@corec1991 Aria, not song.
That pianissimo is absolutely gorgeous and totally unexpected from a voice of this size
If perfection in singing exists this is it.
Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious👋
She was really into this performance. What a superior voice, great poise, carefull and artistic delivery. And she brought this every time.
She definitely did!

I was there also and witnessed the ovation ....If I remember correctly she was with Christa Ludwig.
What a voice!!!...the weight, ....the warmth....the strength...the perfect intonation....

A voice lesson to be studied again and again.
This is the standard for this aria, all others fall short.
