No soprano had a more exciting, thrilling voice so full of pathos and power than this at this time in her life and prior to 1954. ❤ And, yes, beautiful this voice is!!!

I know nothing of opera but listening to this voice just draws me into her incredible gift. I can’t imagine having that incredible vocal range. Simply beautiful
The size of this voice by 1949 is RIDICULOUS! Which individual that calls themselves a human being is capable of so much natural UNFORCED volume? How does that even work?
To say “I’m not a fan” means to say that you don’t have the gift of soul to recognize great artistry. I don’t know much about musical technique but this voice raises the hairs on the back of my neck and brings unbidden tears. Callas, the greatest opera soprano ever and Kathleen Ferrier the greatest contralto.
This is Callas phrasing in Bellini's music, with all the nuances, shadows, rubato required by this music! Listen to the micro agogica in her last coloratura of the cantilena ! Chopin was inspired by Bellini music; Wagner also wanted his singers oat Bayreuth Theater to be coached by Manuel Garcia in "belcanto" way of singing the music for the premiere. Her voice might not be as Ponselle's but Callas phrasing in Bellini is unique indeed ! ♥
My goodness, this is incredible. The size of the voice and the absolute steadiness of tone combined with all her musical precision. I have never heard her sounding this good. (At the time one would celebrate the successor of Ponselle.)
La voz de María Callas era perfecta en sus primeros años de carrera. Era como escuchar las gotas del agua más pura y cristalina. Verdaderamente una belleza única!
When someone asked Tullio Serafin what he actually thought of Callas' voice, the great maestro shook his head and mused, "Which voice? Norma? Violetta?"
I think we've been told over and over again that it wasn't beautiful that we haven't been able to truly hear her voice without this haze of years of criticism. Beauty is indeed subjective, and what was one considered beautiful may not be today, and vice versa. During the Renaissance, heavier women were deemed desirable and skinny women were unattractive. So it is with other standards of "beauty."
I guess if you compare the timbre of her voice to someone like Leontyne Price it's not conventionally beautiful. Dramatic and full of colour - yes. But 'beautiful'? No.
Some have ears, but can't hear. Silly to let them bother you. My aunt, may she r.i.p., worshipped Liberace, but can't stand Richter, complaining that he 'plays like a farmer digging for potatoes". I only smiled and nod my head each time.
@@baritonebynightYeah, like the old clichë goes. But the point was that Callas' voice was never even THAT unusual or strange in comparison to other voices in her category & even just in general for it to merit being exceptionalized & seen in that regard. So perhaps the subjectivity has really been less about the perception of "beauty" than the other stuff within those people who actually couldn't even aspire to her standards if they wanted to. And you know they SOOOO want to! Bad. Though, they won't explicitly admit to it. So what does one do to feel better about not being able to reach the distant stars? It's another ancient tactic that's not too far from the ad hominem: THE SOUR GRAPES.
