As an aspiring screenwriter this is the gold mine of interviews. Alex Garland is brilliant. These questions are great.

I have such respect for Alex, it's so great that he doesn't take all the credit despite writing and directing, he values everyone who works on each film he makes. Amazing man.

The way he writes scripts is just like how I right, it was kind of cool to find out an amazing writer also does that. Gives me hope mine could be as good as his one day

Good interview. Alex is kind enough to really reveal his worries and objectives.
50 or 15 million budget ? And avoiding big names. Clever. But still, big names like Cruise, Dicaprio or Damon or Pit would, if pressed, accept a lower fee (and more percentage of revenue) if they really wanted to be part of the movie. So that is not a reason. (And all 4 are certainly very assertive to talk themselves into this project if they 'd gotten the smell of it..)
But the fact that big names bring in an uneasy audience expectancy is very well recognized by Alex.
6:20 What does he mean by "have great charisma , but not else in terms of ' chops' ??" What are chops ?

I disagree with Alex Garland on the idea of the power pyramid within filmmaking not existing. I think someone who is a worthwhile writer-director is someone who realizes that they themselves take ownership of what others provide by simply being the one who says yes and no. I think someone who abdicates this position in any way will automatically make an inferior product. The reason for this is something that this movie comments on. That being the utter isolation of an individual apart from others. A painting painted by two people cannot help but be incongruent. Considering how great the ideas are in this film; I think they could have resulted in a far better movie. Some of the scenes in it seem to make it obvious that focus was missing.

I enjoy the movie great deal, its really contemporary, and that's its main quality i think..... BUT... its pretty self explanatory on the actors thing: stars have egos up theirs arse, and are all wanna be's on shity hollywood crap movies, and they think they'r great because they dont have to prove anything to anyone anymore, to make a buck... or a million bucks... they just have to show their prosthesis white teeth on camera....and not be in great movies like this one...
