I used to work for the Highways Dept in South Australia. All the Regional Engineers in the outback areas drove Toyota Landcruisers as Departmental cars, as outback roads (apart from the major highways) tended to be unsealed and prone to flash flooding at times. When Range Rovers became available, all the RE's put in for one as they fancied driving in a bit of luxury. Twelve months later the RE's were back in Landcruisers as the Range Rovers had disintegrated into little piles of nuts and bolts.

Owned a 2003 model Landcruiser from 2006 - 2019. Had the 3rd row so all six of us could get in. Went all around the UK and over to France. The most capable and reliable car I have ever owned. I shed a tear when I had to sell him, but he's still MOTd and taxed with a new owner. Loved the review, thank you!

In Canada, we have used Toyota Land Cruisers for Decades, there are very few examples of older models still in existence, because they usually get driven into the Ground, and finally become unroadworthy. 500,000 miles is Average on those here. Nice to see they are available there.

Not wishing to be height-ist, but that must have been a challenge to climb in for Miss HubNut! Unless she too is "like a gazelle"!!!
Went to Iceland a couple of years ago expecting to see dozens of these type of vehicles, and, of course, most people drive perfectly ordinary cars on tarmac roads. Did see some amazing Tundra trucks at tourist destinations though. Cheers

They’ve dropped the V8 diesel on current versions. I’ve got a spare engine, auto transmission and transfer box that would fit that, not far away. My engine is the 1HD FT-E with 200hp, rather more than when fitted at the factory to 70 series which may have been indirect injection non turbo at some stage of production.

Anyone remember channel 4 in the 90's when they used to show the Icelandic EXTREME hill climb championships ?? usually there would be in the course at least one section whereby they had to negotiate a small lake going flat out to try and get the big paddle tyres to skim the surface of the water , and hopefully reach the other side before foreward motion ran out and downward motion took over !! 700 hp plus on a class one vehicle , that's throbbidge

What a brilliant car. You cold say it has plenty presence and very practical off road on a farm but still useful on it.. I can imagine one of these all 'blinged out' driving the kids to school in a very affluent part of a city somewhere but getting the kids into a booster seats could have some comedic value as well.

The next review should be a comparison against the smart fourtwo single (short) person camper conversion with the front passenger seat removed. It has been done & They are just as hilarious.
The review item I missed for the land cruiser was the race between first gear low ratio idle & a pedestrian (like the farmers feeding the sheep jumping out of the running tractor & walking behind shovelling the animal feed out the back as the tractor slowly traverses the field all by itself)

In Australia these are popular in the outback as "tray backs". In fact in language a car is referred to as a Toyota as the British used to referred to a vacuum cleaner as a Hoover. However all is not perfect when the V8 diesel came in they kept the low gearing which makes long distance travel painful with very poor fuel consumption. One of the other problems is a very poor ride on rough roads. In Australia its almost impossible to modify a vehicle so desired lift kit and bigger wheels is a no no.

A Landcruiser is the obvious choice for a farmer in Wales (or anywhere, in fact) but those wheels are ... Icelandic. A few years ago I somehow ended up watching Icelandic off-road motoring competitions. The hill climbing involves going up scree that increases in angle until it goes past the vertical, into overhang. Sometimes they get over it, more often they fall back down the hill (these are purpose designed buggies). But the thing that really got me is the official Icelandic way of crossing a pool: back up, hurtle towards the water and aquaplane to the other side.
After this, I realised that Bjork's* initial success at home was due to her girl-next-door charm.
    * sorry, don't know how to do an umlaut.

Good grief Penfold. That's a chunky bit of kit. Wouldn't fancy trying to push start that if the battery got a bit iffy. Having said that, if it ever met a stray boulder in the middle of a country (mountain?) lane, I wouldn't give much for the boulder's chances of survival. 😄

I was in Iceland last year and got a ride in one of the big brothers to this, based on a Sprinter van but with completely reworked chassis and suspension. Also had a tire inflation/deflation system - it could run at 5psi to go over 2m thick snow. You can see it briefly in a video I did here: ruclips.net/video/w-zjy7E5w4w/видео.htmlsi=sJ9Bk8nbJOu80xTJ&t=362
