I can't believe we spent nearly a year trying to arrange you to review my FJ and we never managed to get our schedules synced... and now I've sold it 😂
I have a colleague that owns tons of cars, at any given time he will have at least 7, Lamborghinis, Ferraris, Astons, GTRs etc and over the years you always see them come and go except for the FJ Cruiser, he has had that forever. I don't love it or hate it, but it is an interesting vehicle.
Had one in the UAE for a few years way back around 2015 or so, great cars, mega 4.0 unburstable engine, we took the rear seats out to make more cargo room for cool boxes, tents, recovery kits etc. Best used as a 2 seater really, rear isn't all that. You can still get them brand new 0km for 37,000GBP here too.
FJ Cruiser owner here. I don't think the interior can be hosed as there aren't any drainage holes under the floor mat, not to mention the sound proofing materials underneath.
I have a neighbor in my apartment complex that has the sky blue paintjob on his; he's had it new from factory and keeps it in near showroom condition, even though he dailies the car. Still looks great!
After owning an FJ for nine years from new - the good - Drove so well, decent power, comfortable and stable, very practical loadspace. The Bad - it's a rust bucket - virtually no rust protection underneath on anything - body, chassis, suspension, exhaust and skid plates. Reliability - in the first 2 years complete brake failure. 3 years, clutch disk failure - this is with virtually no off-road. at 60K miles had to replace calipers on the first brake job as they were so rusty they couldn't be restored. Brittle paint - stone chips on all panels to an unbelievable degree. Windshield - picks up stone chips and frame flex will crack the windshield - which involves replacing the trim above the windshield - which glass places don't carry. Still I loved it and was sorry to see it go. Held value better than anything. I still want another one........
Can confirm the rust issues. I live in the Northeast US and mine is completely rusty underneath. I have owned mine since new with 178k miles on mine and haven't had any problems other than 1 dead alternator and a seized caliper (due to rust). I did have both my window motors die on me but thats because I had left the windows down in a Florida monsoon and the doors filled up full of water. I have had my windshield replaced but they didn't have to replace the top trim... not sure why your windshield place had to do that. Mine is an 08 - maybe they changed something in the later years? Either way - I've had it for 17 years now and I've gotten quote bored with it. I pretty much only use it in the winter now to go to the dump and run errands around town. The H1 and the Wife's new Defender are much more interesting, entertaining vehicles.
We got them here in south africa. Sadly they weren't super popular. Fuel isn't cheap here and the 4.0 needed an equivalent diesel option but sadly that never happened. Would have sold a lot more here then. Awesome car
In the US car magazine reviews when new the main criticism was outward visibility. Pill box size windows and that huge C pillar. In my semiretired job I’ve driven several and have the same complaint.
I back into all parking spaces because it's too difficult to back out. Some had a back-up camera, but the screen was pathetically small and integrated into the rear-view mirror.
Technically they were cancelled in 14, but kept building then for the UAE, without any major further development. I.e. the 22 is the same as the 2014 one that was cancelled in USA.
FJs were made from 2007-2014 for the American market. I bought mine when they came out in 2007 and have been daily driving it since. Currently on 260k miles. I paid $39,500 (USD) for mine in 2007. Still love it. (Automatic, selectable 4-wheel drive)
How? How did you pay $39,000 in 2007? I bought my manual in August 2007 for $25,000 with Tow package, rock rails and sun roof - lower spec stereo but even so....(NJ)
@ maybe it was $29,500. Sorry, it’s been a while. I just remember explicitly the x9,500. It has the upgraded stereo and tow package. I also bought it Memorial Day weekend 2006 (they released early in ‘06 as an ‘07 model). So, i likely paid some dealer Early-Adopter gouging fees. I didn’t care, though, as i knew I’d put hundreds of thousands of miles on it. Been worth every penny.
Saw these badboys everwhere when I was in Saudi Arabia last month for the Dakar Rally. The police force have a ton of them, and the locals seem to like them too
I saw a lot of these when I worked in the Middle-east over 10 years ago and a colleague had one. I seem to recall he said that there was a lot wind noise on the motorway due to the flat, upright windscreen.
Down in South America we still had the old FJ's assembled (by law) in local factories. They were just bolted together, so we home mechanics could keep them going forever. This FJ, however, got all posh for local use. We all wanted one but the new price was crippling. The old Jeep Wagoneer woodie stayed in the fold.
It always fascinates me that such cars get criticized by journalists for not having “modern electronics” like android auto and apple car play. I would rather have this old stereo no touch screen and physical buttons for all driving related functions and AC. Don’t you think this is the peak of anterior design. I wish more manufacturers would go back to that.
Canada bought a fair number of these. I still see them around. My understanding is they're based on the Prado chassis? If so, that's a good thing. I never got on with the truncated windows, tho. And apparently the rear seats can't see almost anything because the b pillars are huge-- it's like sitting in a pit. Neat car, tho.
I was in a 4X4 club based in San Diego, Ca. for almost 30 years. We accepted all 4X4 vehicles but it was 90%+ Jeeps. We did have a few members with the old FJ40's. We jokingly told them that the "FJ" stood for Foreign Jeep. 😅
The J does stand for Jeep. The american army put out a order for local units when based in japan. Toyota didnt get the contract. But had the design done so made it. The fj and bj was the name of engine then the jeep shotend to J.
It apparently sold well enough here in the Philippines to warrant it receiving 11 of the 1000 Final edition units that was produced for the middle east market.
IIRC Toyota's truck division Hino had a hand in making these. Like most, if not all, Toyota products in N/A they didn't come with a diesel option which is a shame because those 4L V6 are thirsty. The prices for these are taking off as these are much more of a collector vehicle now.
Toyota never made an FJ Cruiser with a diesel. It was shame that they did not sell it with the Toyota 2.4 or 2.8 diesel engine. Much more practical and reliable than a Range Rover/Land Rover
@paultease5095 to be honest if you've driven the FJ Petrol with the gorgeous V6 1GR engine - you'd never want a diesel, it fabulous and not as terrible on fuel as you think!
They were also released on the South African market, they weren`t all that popular but you do see them now and again being used as mommy wagons on school runs...
i had no idea they were still making these up until 2022! we only got this for a few years here in the us, so i assumed since it flopped in its intended market it would've also been discontinued elsewhere
An off-road mate has one over here in Oz. As is usually the case over here, it’s kitted out with a lift kit, snorkel, winch etc. pretty good off-road as it’s based on the three-door Prado chassis. Only major issues are the lack of space and cripplingly small fuel tank. Over here it also has the faintest whiff of hairdresser car about it.
I live in Bali, we have a lot of 1970s FJ40, Land Rover Series, Jeep CJ and older Willy’s. I own all except the FJ40. This design appeals to those who remember the FJ40, an excellent hardtop utility with 6 cylinder engine and plenty of room for travelling on rough roads. As the FJ40 was rare in UK in period, it would not have sold that well as a new homage.
These are fun vehicles, and with last forever when maintenance is done. The FJ, 4runner, Prado, and Lexus GX share a lot of genetics. I prefer the V8 in the Lexus.
Er Jay, that was the wrong term for where you went. That was unsealed road not mild off road. That looked like one of our minor roads here in Oz. They were not popular in Australia. The 40 series is still very sort after as they are built like a tank and can take a lot of real off road. Great video though, that is a very beautiful area. Bit of a giggle mate.
My ex supervisor had one of those, which he bought new. He traded it in after a month, complaining the capacity was too small (smaller than it looks from the outside). Ahead of its time, I suppose. Most SUVs here in the USA have painfully little room inside given how big they are on the outside. I wish SUVs would just go away, already.
Despite my brothers 2016 Camry taking up more space. My buddies 2011 Highlander is far more spacious and practical than the Camry. With a significantly more versatile interior and even a third row. So no. I dont really expect SUVs to go away. Their arent any alternatives to them besides a minivan. A lifted wagon might work but automakers have already axed the sedans they are based on and if not already invest billions into their CUVs so why try to aim consumers at something else? Probably will be sticking to SUVs and CUVs for the rest of my life. There really is no practical alternative. I had a Camry once myself and just had a Corolla rental. Far to low and trying to have sporty proportions for a comfortable daily driver. Maybe as a 2nd car.
I had one of these for 3 years in Canada. Cement Grey Trails Team 2013. Sold it for the same price I bought it for. Should have kept it. Loved that thing. So ugly and fun.
When I lived in Dubai, I looked at buying one of these. However, when I sat inside, the sight lines were so bad I could not see buying it. Went with the Prado. Now back in the US, I have a 1975 FJ40 that I love.
I saw this in auz some years back 2014 and would loved to be able to have bought one to bring back to blity as it was something i thought would go down a treat here why were they not imported i couldn’t understand that it’s unique
Move to Australia 🇦🇺. We got them. Basically a rebodied Prado with only a 4.0L v6 petrol. Smart people bought the Prado diesel. As the petrol had a rubbish fuel range.

is that a CSFG White Crow case you have for that wall PC? I'm almost sure it is one.
Wall cases are cool. wish I had a use for a powerful computer worth showing off like that. My newest computer is a Dell 7060 micro with an 8th Gen i5 and it's plenty for me. Last PC I built was over 20 years ago! Wow
There is always a problem with decent off-roaders, especially those with ladder frames. To be good off-road they need off-road tyres. To then take the off-roader on to tarmac with off-road tyres, in any emergency, you will be caught short. Land Rover did some tests showing on tarmac, the difference between on-road tyres and off-road tyres. The difference was scary, with one test the vehicle stopping in almost half the distance with normal road tyres and steering limits were also a joke for the off-road tyres. So off-roaders are between a rock and a hard place. To be good off road, you need off-road tyres. To be remotely safe on-road, you need normal road tyres. Any 4x4 with road tyres will flounder off-road and it is the same the other way round. Fools will argue otherwise, but laws of physics will disagree with whatever opinion they choose to offer. Then add in the problems with ladder frames and safety in a crash. It really is not a good prospect and one I would never put my family in.
Live in America. I own a 2011 FJ Trail Teams. Just hit 100k miles. I love it!! Best car I have ever owned and will keep it the rest of my life. They really are that tough, simple and dependable. And yes, surprisingly, they are very comfortable to drive for what they are. For those not familiar... The Trail Teams were a limited production FJ. Each year Toyota would pick a color and produce just 2500 of that model year (although they did very the production numbers after the 2008 financial collapse). They would color match the roof, blackout the trimmings and rims, and use TRD suspension, rims and a few other not really important items. There is no diesel variant in the US, which would be awesome!! And the mirror camera, while better than nothing... Sucks. LOL Also... Fun Fact... The Six Speed Manual versions are full time 4 wheel drive. The automatics are part time. They also have rear lockers. Not sure if that was an option or standard equip, but mine has it!! it's a beast off road. They were built in Japan on the same production line as Toyotas commercial trucks. So they are over-built. That's why they are so tough and last so long.
These things hold their value way too well here in the US. My buddy had one. It was tan and for some reason only 2wd. He ABUSED that thing. Had over 250k miles on it. It only died when he drunkly pulled i to his driveway and hit a rock bending the frame and wheels. Things like this are why we love SUVs here lol. Except they are quire unaffordable so you have to buy the unibody CUVs. I do wish Toyota made a cheaper two door SUV. I like my 2016 4Runner but something a but smaller would be neat. They keep making 50k plus body on frame SUVs here. Really need a 30k or under body on frame SUV back. Or maybe unibody if it was boxy and practical. Not all bubbly and curvey you know? Automakers seem less likely to try new things these days and must play it safe with how unstable the auto industry is atm.
I think UK “car people” do know these. I’ve seen a handful over the years.

I see them quite a lot in The Netherlands actually. They sold them here. Also in Germany as far as I know. I also have a bright blue one in my street and in the next street there is a yellow one. Also, Toyota 100% never did a diesel variant of the FJ Cruiser. It only had one engine choice. A 4 liter V6. I don't like the brown wrap on this one though. I don't really like matte finishes on cars. Also your friend "Folkert", is he Dutch? Cause I am and I know at least 2 Folkerts.
I am not one of the 40% but the engine is so anemic that it could barely cruise at 130kph on the highway. Nice looking but interior space is lacking a fair bit. I like the special door for the rear passengers. In Asia, Japanese versions imported as "recond cars" are popular in the past decade. Those had Japanese characters on the switches....And its nav system is also in Japanese...
My dude didn't know we share just another hobby: putting too many hours into making white and black extreme coputer parts look like they want to be put up against a wall together!
We have a mixed view of these in the US. Ugly, horrifically overpriced used, bad on fuel, tiny inside, really poor visibility, can't tow that much, but they are quite capable off-road. But then again, so is the 4Runner. These ended up being just for the people that wanted to feel that they were different (but actually aren't since they are buying a Toyota), and were willing to pay more than the car is worth to attempt to appear that way.
"shades of baby humvee" lol... as someone who owns a Hummer H1 and a FJ Cruiser - there's nothing about the FJ Cruiser that is in anyway like the humvee. Also, the FJ Cruiser is great but just extremely boring. They also rust away if you look at it hard enough.
Britain does not really need off road vehicles unless the pot holes keep getting worse, which is pretty likely 😂😢😮❤ 95% don’t see anything other than a gravel driveway there are many better vehicles than an FJ.
Just a heads up, I think you would like to turn off the AI dub option for your video. Kinda make the watching experience uncomfortable. Not to be disparaging towards those who cannot watch in EN, but AI dubbing is... uncomfortable. Subtitles would be better but I know from personal experience that it is a faff to make...
I can't believe we spent nearly a year trying to arrange you to review my FJ and we never managed to get our schedules synced... and now I've sold it 😂

Saw loads while working in the Middle East. When I got back to the UK I started looking for one in the classifieds but 😢😢😢 nowt
Sucks. LOL
Also...
I had one, never again. 2 words, gas guzzler.
Yep. Had a lease back in the day because it was cheaper...it was not cheap at all:)
I must admit I would prefer a defender, but I would definitely have a Toyota land cruiser and Toyota century saloon V12.
The front reminds me of a 1997 SsanYong Korando.
Err No! The Koorando copied the FJ!
So cool Britain never got it? Ha! I’ll trade you that POS for your TVRs and Caterhams! Mike (from Canada).
Correct. We weren’t allowed it !!!! And yes Xmas gone and yes March soon. Thank you we’ve ground out January
brilliant dune buggies
Would have one in a snap if it did a better mpg!
Shame they never sold them RHD in the UK, I think they would have sold a few
Jay, if you had 10 grand ish and wanted either a sporty or comfortable *interesting* vehicle, what would you look at first?
A car designed for the American bro. They look very cool, but we're never designed for the UK or European market.
My dude didn't know we share just another hobby: putting too many hours into making white and black extreme coputer parts look like they want to be put up against a wall together!
Toyota nearly made the same mistake again with the CHR only the other way around that was ment to be for Europe only .
To be fair, you can save money by buying a Prado- the FJ was based on Prado underpinnings.
The FJ Cruiser used the 150 series Prado chassis, just with a factory chopped shorter wheelbase to improve break over angle clearance.
Is that FJ Cruiser wrapped *brown* ? Why???
If I send a self addressed envelope can i get a factsheet?
James, can we talk about your sick wall-mounted PC in your office?
There's a whole video about it
Many police cars in Saudi Arabia are FJs makes me slow down every time I see one which is annoying because there are too many
We have a mixed view of these in the US. Ugly, horrifically overpriced used, bad on fuel, tiny inside, really poor visibility, can't tow that much, but they are quite capable off-road. But then again, so is the 4Runner. These ended up being just for the people that wanted to feel that they were different (but actually aren't since they are buying a Toyota), and were willing to pay more than the car is worth to attempt to appear that way.
it is simply a 4-Runner with a much less conveniently laid out body
"shades of baby humvee" lol... as someone who owns a Hummer H1 and a FJ Cruiser - there's nothing about the FJ Cruiser that is in anyway like the humvee. Also, the FJ Cruiser is great but just extremely boring. They also rust away if you look at it hard enough.
I once (just now) wrote a haiku about these...
The FJ Cruiser,
Both hip _and_ a bruiser,
Buy one now, loser.
Can you not turn the AI dub off?
Are you not able to click the gear, click audio track, and click English?
Who was here before the name change?
