Think he paid his own tickets to review Ferraris in Italy? Doug Demuro is on record always paying for his own flights and lodging when joining a press launch. Does Jay live to that standard, or even beyond?
He should've bought one of those "magic" heaters YT often advertise that heats a room in seconds for pennies. When you buy them you find they are just mini heaters you can find anywhere but cost a fortune to run. Ask for your money back and they'll offer you a 75% refund PLUS you get to keep the product. The 25% they keep is enough to make it a profitable scam 🤷♂

@@McBeamer94Exactly! Notice how they'll purposely look for problems on French cars that aren't even worth mentioning, yet are completely shoved under the carpet on German and Chinese cars
@@ztzz1079but also tons of car companies have manufacturing plants in China too (eg VW/Audi, GM, Toyota, Honda, BMW and Mercedes etc etc) so why single out Tesla?
Any company that tries to short circuit the old practice of actually building a reputation over several years with this sort of thing, immediately results in my dismissing them.
So does VW. They were buying ADAC rating for years, for example. I'm a former journalist. VW would regularly threaten to stop advertising if their car review wasn't positive (for ANY of their brands). They demanded they review articles before publication - and demanded alternations for anything negative threatening to stop advertising. They threatend to stop advertising if a rival car got 5-stars... They would stop providing your with test cars, stop inviting you to pressers, car launches... In some European countries, every single VW group car test in any media is advertorial.
I actually don’t believe this. VW group cars have naturally been at the top of their game for 40 years now, and their brands. Paid-for or not; people buy them. And lots of them. If the reviews were false than word-of-mouth would have seen them fail years ago.
VW is well known for that, but so do quite a few other car brands. Launch events held in European winter somewhere in the southern hemisphere, 5 star hotels, other programs, paid for by the PR team, of course don't have any influence on journalists.
It is a fairly common practice, not by the OEMs but rather their nationwide distributor. There is a Polish youtuber who got on wrong terms with Ford for showing a squeky boot. Chinese cars are paying social media inflencers to promote their lower end to mediocre cars as "disruptive" groundbraking etc. They hope that the consumer get overwhelmed with information, and not see through the lies.
I worked on car magazines for 12 years back in the 80s-90s and this is nothing new Jay. It's been going on forever - publishers make their money from advertisers. There is no "cover price" anymore with online stuff too so they are even more reliant on ad (or sponsor) revenue now. You have to play nice with the big ad spenders or they take their money elsewhere.
That email sounds like it's aimed at loud and over-excited Gen Z "influencers". It also sounds like Chinese business practice is being exported with their cars. 🤨
@@JayEmmOnCars You have to joking, less so here when car reviewers are given paid vacations to Spain for example to review a new car? It's extremely common.
@@kristoffer3000 that's a perk and certainly intended to make the reviewers see the brand and car more favourably but it's not actually paying money into their account to do film and edit prescribed videos
@@kristoffer3000they don’t tell the reviewers what to say though. And it doesn’t always go well. This Jaecoo contract is saying what to say and do. There’s a huge difference.
Who pays his flight tickets and lodging when spending time in Italy living the Ferrari live, I wonder. Would I consider that "hard unpaid work", even if I used my own cameras and editing time? Has anyone but Doug Demuro refused tickets and lodging and gotten his own on press events where the other journalists were well pampered?
If it’s paid, then it’s simply a commercial advert. And it must be shown as such on any social media, and that it’s not an impartial review. Well done James for showing some integrity, it’s why I like your channel.
I had to laugh, as soon as this video finished, I had a pop-up link to Johnny Smith (from the late Brake Show) taking part in the event you mentioned in this video... Very disappointing to say the least. Keep up the good and transparent work Jay
Jay, I follow a lot of automotive channels, you are the only person to tackle some of the moral problems involved in our enthusiasm for motoring, I take my hat off to you. Real journalism.
Me too. I think Jay is a bit more on his high horse than he needs to be. To the point of projecting. I think it's not a great look to consider so one-sided when his previous video I saw was him driving a Ferrari in Italy. Would Ferrari need to pay me for that content? No. Do I need them to cover travel, lovely hotels and expenses - well, most journos can't refuse that. Some in fact, can.
As James referenced for himself, he is like the old top gear style of review. Opinions which are of interest for car people, not just for how many hobnobs can you fit in the glovebox. That's why I like this and listen to James' experience and thoughts on cars he has driven. I haven't driven them!. Long live the integrity of channels like JayEmm. As James implied, morals are affordable when there's no need just to survive.
Well said James. Very few RUclipsrs are open and honest about who is prepared to pay them and what they want in return. Motto is take the reviews as a guide, and then check out the product for yourself. It is easy enough to sus out the reviewers that are only on here for the money. As soon as i see "Buy Me a Coffee" the alarm bells start to ring, then i reach for the mute button.
Far too many on Utube who proudly spec their new car, usually BMW or the like, take delivery & drive it for a year blowing sunshine up the arse of the manufacturers only to then hand it back. Not true ownership, just paid promotion. Same crap is starting to creep into bike world too. You are a ray of sunshine amongst all the bullshit, keep up the great work 👍😎
Sadly that sounds like Mat Watson. He can do brilliant reviews, where he seems to answer every question I might have on a car, but he also does a lot of stupid crap to appeal to the lowest common denominator and some very obvious paid content advertisements for companies, which irritate the hell out of me. But then he makes way more in a month than I do in probably a few years, so who's the real idiot (apart from those who watch his lowest common denominator crap)?
I watched Jonny’s video a few days before, and immediately thought something was off about, well I actually thought it was crap and not up to his usual standards. I’m not going to stop watching his stuff, but what you have said in your video explained it very well. Thanks.

As you are wearing a Scooby doo shirt i kinda of hoped the ending of the video would have been ...... Jay pulls off his rubber mask to reveal you actually are Xi Jinping saying " and i would have got away with it , if it wasn't for you meddling RUclips kids"
The world is going mad, and the grifters are not even trying to be covert any more. Good on you Jay! Best wishes from George PS Loved your Andorra videos!
Just seen the Late Brake Show on this, or at least the first five minutes, when it became clear that poor Jonny has been suckered. I immediately unsubscribed and blocked his channel for RUclips notifications. I cannot afford to help content creators financially, but I can choose what is worth my attention watching their output and sometimes replying if interesting points come from it.
What a breath of fresh air in the modern world we live in to have someone with integrity. Well done in making the stand. My experience from an OEM perspective is pre You Tube, but many journo’s were lazy and happy to attend events and largely print the press release provided. I might add that to the best of my knowledge (I was not the top guy..) the OEM did not pay journo’s beyond expenses, trips and some goodies.
I had a chuckle at 'Jaguar'. Thanks as always for interesting content, James. It feels like companies like this really lack that car passion, it is just money! As an expat in Japan I feel that passion here. Have a good one, mate!
JON! What the feck are you doing here?! Amazed Jaecoo thought a bloke who just makes videos about roads in a 20-year-old Saab was a candidate for their challenge...
Refreshing transparency and honesty - though we never doubted you. This video casts a shadow over some of the other RUclipsrs who we'd hoped were above this kind of advertorial subterfuge - and now we know what to look for. Thank you James.
It's not a matter of the length of the ads. I use adblocker because I'm sick and tired of the insulting, z3xualized, and generally degrading nature of the ads. And for every channel I do follow that might have the decency to try and prune their ads, there's another 19 that just don't give a dam. It's the same reason why I completely gave up watching TV, and why I stopped bothering with streaming services altogether once they started cramming ads in.
@@FallingPicturesProductions I pay for YT premium because YT is my Netflix. I watch a lot, and I feel it's only fair to pay for that. I realise that the content creators get a pittance compared to Google, but it's something. I Patreon one channel and will probably do more when I'm a bit more properly employed. We're in a golden age when we can watch EXACTLY what we want, and the algorithm finds us more stuff that we like. Every time I've watched commercial TV I feel my intelligence being insulted by idiotic ads and moronic content. Paying for YT allows me to see what I love, and pays the creators to make it.
JayEmm I like your content and respect your opinions. You're approach here is nothing less than I would expect of you. Thank you for confirming my judgement on all counts.
Back in the 80's George Bishop in CAR Magazine had a column that did used to mention in great detail the food & drink on offer, big difference was he did it in a very clever and entertaining way and also knew what he was talking about regarding the car.
I give a fair few presentations about my area of expertise - it's absolutely expected that I'm going to get fed and watered....sometimes it's proper lavish. Nothing is free. My time isn't free, even when I give it for free - I could do something else and be earning a few £££ and these lights/water/heating etc need paying for. I can't be charitable if I need to find coppers to have a loaf on the table. JM will be making a profit from this video just because that's how RUclips works, and damn right too. Not only do his lights need paying for but it's important content, probably more important than his usual 'this is me driving around in some geezer's PAJ, it's a hard life' etc. But that's how it works - you can make proper content on the back of your reputation and still play nice with the suppliers. I dislike being stabbed in the back by those that shill on the shoulders of a hard earned reputation. Reputations are hard earned but easy to lose. Johnny.

One of my neighbours just bought an Omoda and one evening I was stood at my door and the light was just right to show the absolutely appalling build quality. The first thing I noticed was the fit of the petrol cap, it was so bad you could fit your fingers in to pull it open, so I looked closer and it was shocking the bonnet for example is designed to sit flush with the top of the wing and it was on one side but on the other side it sat so proud that if it had to fit inside the wings as most cars do the bonnet wouldn’t be able to close. There’s already stories of things like the welds on the rear axle failing, I reckon in three years time most will be absolutely knackered.
Great stuff, James. I really admire how motivated you are to set the record straight despite the time and effort required ("not a five minute job!"). Keep it up. And 80,000 views is 3 days :- testament to how much people value your opinion. 👍 PS: I have a similar heater - the only way it makes any difference is if I literally sit on top of it, but not recommended from an H & S point of view!
The Jaecoo 7 seems like a reasonably good car, but I knew as soon as these videos came out I knew something was up. It was so odd seeing creators usually firmly in the super car space suddenly doing a U Turn and making a video about a Chinese family SUV. Thank you for exposing the fakery. Yes, these videos are not reviews, they are adverts. Jaecoo have just launched their website and it’s full of spelling mistakes. Oops. Buy a Dacia Bigster, not a Jaecoo.
It doesn't look like a car to me. It looks similar to a Range Rover: a big SUV. I find things like the new Renault 5 or the more car-like BYD models more appealing.
James.......I've watched you for a while. I'm not sure why I didn't do it sooner but on the basis of your integrity, I've just subscribed! Brilliant mate......absolutely brilliant!
Have watched your content pretty much since the beginning and the way you've grown, in terms of presentation skills, production quality and subscriber numbers is veru commendable. What though is even more commendable, is that you've stayed true to yourself and maintained your integrity. Well done bud, always responsible, educational and thoroughly entertaining vids 👍
Love your honesty Jay Emm, which is one of the reasons I watch your channel. I'm a huge hi-fi nut and the amount of channels I've unsubscribed from due to paid reviews is crazy. Apart from your honesty you have a likable, natural and inoffensive personality and that goes a long way for me.
A lot of listeners seem fixated on a sum of £5k; however, this is to be spent on boosting instagram posts and content on the Jaecoo -- this isn't the figure for the youtuber as an income. The recipient is invited to state their rates and expenses, but that figure is clearly down to negotiation -- what's clear is that the video is a targetted campaign at a group of consumers that are interested in cars. No one who watches these would think that it's anything other than a Jaecoo promo, given the Top Gear style checkpoints and the interaction with the other participating youtubers. ps I'm not a China sponsored bot!
Serpentza and Laowhy went to live in China for over a decade and even they admit that the Chinese would rather be seen on a 25 yo GM or VW ancient relic of a car rather than the newest piece of Chinese engineering, as the only difference between the safety of the Chinese car and the older foreign cars is that the older cars never had them while the new Chinese cars only have them nominaly (they don't actually work on the moment of an impact).
I bought a cheap Chinese crap cordless vacuum for keeping the car interior clean a few months ago. A week later I received an unsolicited postcard from the manufacturer, INSTRUCTING me to go onto to the Amazon website, write a glowing review of the product (which in all honesty is crap), give it FIVE stars and they will send me a voucher for £10 !! Amazon passing on my personal details to some random Chinese sweat shop was bad enough, but then the same manufacturer instructing me to give a biased review for ten dorrar? 🙄🤬
I had a similar experience to this for a product on Amazon which had almost all 5 star reviews. I got the "bribe" with the product asking for a 5 star review in return for a gift. I didn't do it, but I tried to explain in my 3 star review the reason there were so many 5 stars, to warn customers but Amazon blocked my review
I had this from a company selling rechargeable batteries. I had measured them to be delivering 20% less capacity than advertised, and was going to let it go but then received one of these "offers". At which point I gave them both barrels in a review.
You exactly tell why i am a subscriber, i value you're honesty and the knowledge you do not get paid by car producers, the old fashioned way off journalisme too me is very important.
Good vid. Yes, this has been going on for decades in the paper press. As you showed- advertisements from car manufactures enable said magazine to PAY their writers salaries. Jeremy Clarkson wrote a great article about a press launch in Italy when during the presentation, all the journos had been given free laptops. This was the early '80 so would have cost a fortune. Nothing was overtly said by the manufacturer but it was certainly a "sweetener". Car gets good reviews as a result. That translates to hundreds and thousands or even millions in sales. Job done. Cost of all those laptops- no biggie!
I bet tbh it fools a fair few. Maybe not the people in these rooms, but so many people know absolutely nothing about cars and when choosing car rely on reviews.
To me, when they started the e-mail with "dear Jay" the alarm bells were ringing. Any company that can't even work out your name clearly doesn't watch your content.
James, been watching your videos for past 3+ years. Reason- you and your mentioned Doug Demuro are unique, very well informed, original and most importantly- honest. Not bought. You and Demuro also both displayed your appreciation, a heartfelt appreciation for your viewers, thanking them on many occasions for allowing you to follow your passion. That means a lot. Please stay true to yourself. This video is a very good representation of how things should be done and the fact that there are very few of you who actually do it that way. Thanks a lot. Cheers
As a car journalist I quit my job when it was getting out of hand. After several reviews where we actually measured e.g. the luggage space and found -20% compared to the brochure we were no longer able to get VW's. Or Renaults or any other brand. Basically a journalist can nowadays only write a good review or he will never be provided any press car or invites to press launches etc. It's disgusting and ruins the business. Update: remember we rolled the Dacia Duster. They then did a recall, installed ESP on all card and we didn't get a single Renault group product for 5 years. Or the Astra we found a software bug in. We were sued to not write about how we crashed it, so Opel could quickly recall it and manage publicity. The FIAT which didn't pass our suspension tests and was classed a danger on the road by Koni's expert. The Alfa which would sometimes shoot forward unexpectedly. The Borgward which wouldn't shut down anymore. Fuel tank differences of up to 18 Litres compared to brochure. Power is almost standard 5% less. The business has gone to sh!t. But the worst is that journalists don't get the chance to say this anymore.
Well explained, James. Useful to hear the brand mention and trace this back the State ownership of the manufacturer, and see which PR agency is working for them - duly noted! I work in the marketing space and have a long career working with agencies and the media. I absolutely agree with the principles you uphold, and that a brand reputation needs to be earned, and done so credibly. Transparency, professionalism and best sustainable business practice are key aspects I always look for. Interesting to hear your thoughts on editorial integrity of RUclipsrs V magazines etc....food for thought.
I am in no way a defender of BYD normally but in this case it has nothing to do with them. Jaecoo is owned by the company I consider the worst of all major Chinese manufacturers. Chery. That's right the company that started copying a DaeWoo that was sold as a Chevrolet in some places (get it Chery/Chevy... ). That was not even a copy of a top of the line Daewoo but rather the bottom. The Chery car was called the QQ. It somehow managed to copy every bit but do it that much worse (like you could interchange say a door but find the QQ one was lighter because they had used thinner steel...).In general I would say the shit city called WuHu (in AnHui) that Chery is from is a leader in problems with quality and QC. Blaming BYD for this is like blaming GM for a Ford product. Chery and BYD are both Chinese but that's it. They are not even from the same city (BYD is ShenZhen based) and they are competitors.
I'm 60. I've worked in magazines since I was 14. I've always held that the job of a magazine is to deliver readers to advertisers. You have to be honest with the readers first to have the title that advertisers are interested in.
James, why not try one of those small, revolutionary “technological miracle” plug-in heaters that pop up on RUclips with annoying regularity, just to confirm that they are also crap?
But an eletrical resistive heater is always 100% efficient. Other than not catching on fire, there is nothing one heater can do better than the other. It takes power from the wall and turns it into heat. Maybe with a light bulb or a computer, all energy use that gets turned into waste heat is considered bad, but with a heater that's all it needs to do.
They’ll cut your electricity bill by 92% and heat any room in 30 seconds. It’s clear they’ve found a way to break the laws of thermodynamics. Nothing dodgy at all.
You mean the text to speech ads claiming they were invented by two British engineers? I always laugh at those because a heater is one of the few devices that can be 100% efficient (all energy going towards heating instead of some being wasted on sound, light etc), and plug in electric heaters are one of the most expensive ways to heat a room
James, thanks for highlighting this, it puts a very different spin on the video that Jonny Smith has just released! How can you possibly rely on the reviews independence when they are so obviously manipulated in this way? Plus, the request to have final editorial control of the content is a really concerning.
Your channel has slowly become my favorite. I love the random car topics you discuss and you're a very engaging speaker. Keep it up, (and that heater sucks)

Not surprised considering they were cheating emissions for years before being caught
That's explains What Cars Vw bias throughout the 80s 90s and naughties then ....
Yes he covered that in the later part of the video
Jay mentions car magazines and paid ads ... Well worth watching the full video.
Prompted me to cancel my paid membership to The Late Brake Show. Ethics and non disclosure being the reason.
That email sounds like it's aimed at loud and over-excited Gen Z "influencers". It also sounds like Chinese business practice is being exported with their cars. 🤨
Yep, apparently it is very common practise in Asia to just pay people for this kind of thing. Less so here
@@JayEmmOnCars You have to joking, less so here when car reviewers are given paid vacations to Spain for example to review a new car?
It's extremely common.
@@kristoffer3000 that's a perk and certainly intended to make the reviewers see the brand and car more favourably but it's not actually paying money into their account to do film and edit prescribed videos
@@Hali88 If the Chinese did it you'd be crying.

This is one of the reasons I have so much respect for you my good friend!

Came to the comments to see the reaction to that incredible shirt, surprised to see people have stayed on topic.
I want that shirt.
@ You and me both!
I believe there needs to be a merch line of these shirts!!!
I think most people here are immune to James’ shite now. 😁
@ I've 'Googled' but can't find the shirt. I reckon James has all his shirts custom made....
Geoff sent me, now I’m here… I came, I saw, I appreciate ‘Tegridy’… subscribed 👍
If it’s paid, then it’s simply a commercial advert. And it must be shown as such on any social media, and that it’s not an impartial review. Well done James for showing some integrity, it’s why I like your channel.
The goal of the campaign is merely to generate awareness for the brand. That is why it’s geared less for a review. Like you said, it’s an ad.
I had to laugh, as soon as this video finished, I had a pop-up link to Johnny Smith (from the late Brake Show) taking part in the event you mentioned in this video... Very disappointing to say the least. Keep up the good and transparent work Jay
I came here, vice-versa. What a coincidence! 😄😄
ohhh shittttttttt , thats disappointing.
just checked the video, of course archie and SOL are there with them

Jay, I follow a lot of automotive channels, you are the only person to tackle some of the moral problems involved in our enthusiasm for motoring, I take my hat off to you. Real journalism.
Came here from the late brake show "review" of the exact Jaecoo car in the email.
Was the "review" (ADVERTORIAL) real or edited to their standards of we pay you to say what we want you to say?
@@WhiteDieselShed Hard to say.
Having worked the PR for a big automotive brand for well over 9 years now, it was really interesting to hear this.
Well said James.
Very few RUclipsrs are open and honest about who is prepared to pay them and what they
want in return.
Motto is take the reviews as a guide, and then check out the product for yourself.
It is easy enough to sus out the reviewers that are only on here for the money.
As soon as i see "Buy Me a Coffee" the alarm bells start to ring, then i reach for the mute button.
Good on you for standing by your principles, can't wait for the extended test drive and 0-60 times of the electric heater
Also Joe Achilles, but at least in his case it’s too obvious. He’s never said a bad word about BMW
I watched Jonny’s video a few days before, and immediately thought something was off about, well I actually thought it was crap and not up to his usual standards. I’m not going to stop watching his stuff, but what you have said in your video explained it very well. Thanks.
Your honesty and integrity shines through. Long may you stay real.

The timing is funny, I just seen the Late Brake Show video of said Jaecoo
I had a chuckle at 'Jaguar'. Thanks as always for interesting content, James. It feels like companies like this really lack that car passion, it is just money! As an expat in Japan I feel that passion here. Have a good one, mate!

Excellent, this is the reason i watch your channel unbiased real world reviews and ethics.
JayEmm I like your content and respect your opinions.
You're approach here is nothing less than I would expect of you.
Thank you for confirming my judgement on all counts.
Respect to you James for putting your head above the parapet and calling this out.
Johnny.
Great and very clear video! Usually "normal" people don't see this side of the medal and have someone like you that explain this clearly it's just amazing! I started now my RUclips channel and this info help me to understand the difference between what to do and what don't for be a nice and honest RUclipsrs
There’s already stories of things like the welds on the rear axle failing, I reckon in three years time most will be absolutely knackered.
this is the kind of thing people said in the 70's about Japanese cars. how did that go?
@kriskalpa this is the sort of lazy generalisation people make on the internet. I didn't say they wouldn't sell any did I?
Great stuff, James. I really admire how motivated you are to set the record straight despite the time and effort required ("not a five minute job!"). Keep it up. And 80,000 views is 3 days :- testament to how much people value your opinion. 👍
PS: I have a similar heater - the only way it makes any difference is if I literally sit on top of it, but not recommended from an H & S point of view!
Doug says don’t trust a seller with poor grammar. Ha.
No, he really said that in his latest video.
"their website" - Ironic...
@DivideBYZero69 hehe
It doesn't look like a car to me. It looks similar to a Range Rover: a big SUV. I find things like the new Renault 5 or the more car-like BYD models more appealing.

Very honest amd refreshing. As opposed to The Late Brake show. Sad as I rate him. But 5k is 5k.

He's maybe the only guy in the UK that principally enunciates his principles.
Running that heater has consumed all the profit from this video lol
What a great, informative and revealing video. Thanks for sharing this James.
Seeing their examples of head-on crashed chinese cars where not even a single airbag went off... chef's piss 👌
We watch you in the US and appreciate the fewer ads and UK insights. Integrity is less common these days. Well done, sir.

Wheels Magazine in Australia was once bold enough to refuse to award a Car of the Year. 3 times in fact: 1972, 1979 & 1986.

I don't believe theyre passing on your details.
I know with ebay, the email will come via them, so the seller doesn't get to see the email address.
Surely that violates GDPR regulations Amazon and the seller using your details like that.
Pretty common with Amazon in the US. I just throw the little review-me cards in the recycling. I don't do reviews. Not even for free 😅
JayEmm was already my favourite car You Tuber, position cemented. Stay warm!
Got exactly the same email !
I thought you might!
Spot on, as usual.
This sleezy "strategy" of manufacturers is fooling no one.
Did my bit of giving it a like of course :) oh, and commenting.
Yup. I get a lot addressed to "Mr JayEmm on Cars" or "Dear JayEmm on Cars team" or my favourite, "Good time of day"
Like "Jerry" from JerryRigEverything....
I'm sure it's BYD in china has a problem with quality control over there. They seem to also spontaneously burst into flames
It's not a quality control problem if they set their standards low enough.
@@naguoningwas talking about in general.

I'm 60. I've worked in magazines since I was 14. I've always held that the job of a magazine is to deliver readers to advertisers. You have to be honest with the readers first to have the title that advertisers are interested in.
Very interesting to hear this. Also inspired me to buy Dad a heater for the workshop too 😂
James, why not try one of those small, revolutionary “technological miracle” plug-in heaters that pop up on RUclips with annoying regularity, just to confirm that they are also crap?
“MY HUBBY WENT HARD ON ME ALL NIGHT WITH THIS ONE SIMPLE TRICK” etc, etc. Please confirm that these also work, James.
Those videos are probably made with a similar contract

Nice video. I tolerate ads and your paid promotions because Inrealize your videos are free to me. I thank you very much for creating content.
