Paid $1170 for the Katana. 4070/i7 katana. Specs are good but there are alot of downsides to it related to its construction. First off it gets alot of critique about the build quality and its definatley justified. The keyboard does not feel good and they layout is wierd. The entire unit feels somewhat sticky including the touchpad which isnt a good thing. It get alot of critique about the screen aswell and its partially justified. The screen works as it should and you forget about that its not very good after using it for a while. The whole unit feels flimsly, there is alot of flex in it and standing och a flat surface its even a bit wobbly and alot of people say it tends to break around the hinges and I can definatley see why that would happen. Another thing that often gets critiqued is the cooling. Thats not justified, cooling works fine even when running demanding applications. Compared to my TUF there isnt really a noticable difference. I paid $970 for a 4060/i7 ASUS TUF and it feels infinitely better to use. In terms of actual performance there appears to be only a very minor advantage to the Katana sometimes. In 3d mark the average difference is is as low as 4 fps. And in terms of actual gaming performance they both run Cyberpunk 2077 on maximum settings perfectly fine. In fact the TUF even appears to have a slight advantage and I'm not sure why. The game also looks better on the TUF because of the better screen. I think looking around for a good deal on a TUF or spending a little extra for a similiarly spec TUF is a better option. There are also some other advantages to the TUF that makes it better for productivity such as a significantly improved battery life. Given you probably intend to use the laptop for a couple of years I would get a similiarly priced TUF instead. Its just alot nicer. However if you intend to use it as a desktop replacement where you wont even touch it and use an external monitor the Katana could arguably be the better choice.
sadly, the temps are not what was shown in this video, mine tend on the high side for some reason, even idle temp on cpu package sits around 60c, spikes to 75 or 80. gpu sits high too, i just got this damn thing and may have to send it back...

Hey, would it be worth it to buy it now in 2024? I want to buy a gaming laptop and this one is the cheapest where I live (thailand) with a 4070. It's priced at 1000 USD, what do you think I should do? The other option at the same price would be a Gigabyte Aorus with a 4060 and a 13th gen i7. Thanks
Could go either way, but in general--if it was my money right now, I'd go for RTX 4000 series since I really think Frame Generation will be featured in so many games. If all you play is e-sports games though, you can skip frame generation since it won't be used in those games. As I say in this video though, the Katana 15's display is not good, so I'd recommend other units over this one unless you're going to focus on using an external display potentially.
@@ahmedzain5720 I'd go for the Legion honestly with the 3070Ti unless you care about frame generation for an extra $400 or so. If a bunch of games had it you could make the argument, the 3070Ti Legion for $1400 from B&H Photo on sale right now is definitely the best bang for buck option
Kinda punching in the dark here to see if you'd respond and or know of this issue: With the same model of laptop I have up-to-date drivers (NVIDIA and BIOS) I am experiencing a black screen during gaming which turns all of my external and regular display off (and just the laptop display when no external displays are connected) and am forced to restart my laptop by holding the power button. On a laptop wether it's 100w or 140w tgp doesn't seem to matter, at 100w there's some cap that doesn't improve almost at all. Though 105w tgp probs mean 15w boost so 90w really and then there's a bit of a difference between 100w and 90w.

I own a MSI GS 63VR with a GTX 1060 which I bought used on eBay in 2017. It has the same crappy display this thing appears to have. I'm almost sure it's the same panel haha. The keyboard on this model appears to be almost the same type as the laptop I have from 2017. The point being not much has changed. I've used my old laptop with an external display because the built in screen is unbearable. I can't believe I'm considering buying and going through this again. But that horsepower for the price.

@@GizmoSlipTech If you're mostly using an external monitor because your screen is so garbage, just get a desktop lol. I never understand that argument. sadly, the temps are not what was shown in this video, mine tend on the high side for some reason, even idle temp on cpu package sits around 60c, spikes to 75 or 80. gpu sits high too, i just got this damn thing and may have to send it back...
@@HazardWolfCorpI was thinking of getting that same model, do u have any updates?
@@mbaalali9251 It has been a good laptop so far, though it does run hot, the CPU specifically, but otherwise it is good, the 4060 seems to handle most games quite well shockingly.
@@mbaalali9251 dunno why i just saw your message now, my apologies, ive had the laptop for a while now and its frankly kinda....alright, its not mindblowing and yeah the temps get super high for the cpu, i am actually waiting on an MSI alpha 17 with the 4070 and ryzen 7945hx to come in as my replacement.
Which is the best msi gaming laptop for gaming in all the things, can someone tell me
Hey, I found a msi katana with 4060 and i9 13gen, and asus tuf with 4070 and i7 13th gen. For the same price. What should I buy at this point ?
Asus tuf has a bigger battery and higher display quality,so I thought tuf is better ..
Give me an idea plss?
4070 for gaming but it will depend on usage and the other parts
Is the Katana better or the Lenovo Legion slim with same spec better?
Thanks for the video, i stil wanna know if the laptop makes loud noise under heay presure, thanks in advance!
I got this thing for 1300€. Big decider was the 4070 with its frame generation. All other choices either had a way worse GPU or insanely higher price... so I call this a steal.. even if it has some thermal issues, I'll just put a cooling pad under it.
From the UK think I may buy this as well, BTW what were your thoughts on the display
sadly really not good... but absolutely good enough. However if you want to use it as your main station for playing games at home just get a additional monitor. It even has HDMI 2.1 in case you get one of them 4K HDR thingies @@reubenwizard
Unfortunately the display is meh. But I have several monitors. The pixel response time is 33ms which is bad. ☮️
Thanks
I just got it brand new for 700 eur here in the nl
Hey bro. Im not sure if i should go for this laptop or a legion 5 3070ti w way better build quality and display. What do you think?
In my opinion, MSI has better motherboard and hardware quality, but inferior hinges and build quality in general.
@@Strozerg yes exactly. So which one would you prefer? Build quality/display or good hardware with not so good display?
Could go either way, but in general--if it was my money right now, I'd go for RTX 4000 series since I really think Frame Generation will be featured in so many games. If all you play is e-sports games though, you can skip frame generation since it won't be used in those games.
As I say in this video though, the Katana 15's display is not good, so I'd recommend other units over this one unless you're going to focus on using an external display potentially.
@@GizmoSlipTech thank you soo much bro. I really appreciate your work!! MAD RESPECT
Hey I see there's a qhd version being released in November in Aus. Curious if you have tried the one with the better screen?
if i found it at 1252.17, you recommended? or a asus rog strix g16, in the same price
What impressed me the most about this laptop is that for a laptop the fans don’t get that loud. I mean I hear it but it’s no way near annoying.
You can have a second SSD if you buy a support bar.
This place and the connection was thinking for hard drive first. That's why this area looks empty
Wich is better, this laptop of video, or katana 15 b13 with i7-13 and rtx 4060?
Hello , which is the 4060 laptop with great display that you would recommend
Thanks for review, do you know is this laptop support Oculus Rift S ?
Kinda punching in the dark here to see if you'd respond and or know of this issue:
With the same model of laptop I have up-to-date drivers (NVIDIA and BIOS)
I am experiencing a black screen during gaming which turns all of my external and regular display off (and just the laptop display when no external displays are connected) and am forced to restart my laptop by holding the power button.
There are multiple forums/threads opened about this issue however no one seems to have found a resolution from which I've found - do you happen to know? or anyone else in the comments, help would be much appreciated!
I did not have this issue. Maybe try switching mux setting? Sounds like driver crashing maybe? Contact MSI support
Which is better msi 15 katana version? the rtx 4070 with intel i7-12650h or the one with rtx 4060 with i7-13620h???
4070
On a laptop wether it's 100w or 140w tgp doesn't seem to matter, at 100w there's some cap that doesn't improve almost at all. Though 105w tgp probs mean 15w boost so 90w really and then there's a bit of a difference between 100w and 90w.
How to know the W of a laptop?
@br0stone105 Very difficult to know. You have to look at r views and videos. Laptop wattages are one of the shadiest practices in the PC hardware industry
It costs 1099€ rn on amazon black friday sale
Should i get asus rog strix i7 13650hx with 4060 or msi katana 4070 i7 13620h , i need it for video editing and gaming
that's so crazy i have the same question 1 years later with between Msi katana 4070 /i713620h 32go ddr5/1to ssd (version with a qhd screen 15.6") or the rog strix G16 4060 140TGP/ 16go ddr5/I7 13650HX for gaming mostly
you got a subscriber oyt of me great work.
Hello my friend, I am thinking of buying a new gaming laptop, which one do you recommend between:
1.- Lenovo Legion 5 Pro 16" 165Hz QHD 500 nits Gaming Laptop, AMD Ryzen 9-6900HX, 32GB DDR5 RAM 1TB SSD, RTX 3070 Ti 8GB GDDR6
2.- MSI Katana 15 15.6" 144Hz FHD, Intel Core i7-13620H, RTX 4070, 16GB DDR5, 1TB NVMe SSD

3070 over 4070? @@pandaki9449
How is this compared to TUF 15, with same RTX 4070 but 12th gen i7?
quick question can you change the rgb and turn it fully off
The problem is when you get under this price range he gets hard to find a 1 TB SSD so minium come with 512 S ssd and 8 gb ram
Just got this for $1080 on prime day think it’s totally worth it at this price
Been offered this with the i9 13900H by my insurance company to replace damaged Medion Erazer P30 with a i512500H and RTX 3060. Think its a decent offer guys?
M2.Slot missing the screw its a design error. You have to contact the support to obtain the adapter.
hi how do you keep CPU running less than 75° playing Red dead & co ? on my katana 15 it on average 78/85 °c (I bought it yesterday)
How much wattage can the gpu go?
I wonder if I should buy this one or strix g17 4060 which provide much higher quality of display😅
Which is better? This MSI, or ACER Nitro 16 Ryzen 7 RTX 4070?
It is kind of you to respect the MSI Katana, but I am an MSI laptop fan and I can tell you the Katana and/or any GF series laptop is the #1 laptop with the most issues in the MSI forums, please do not encourage anyone to purchase this laptop, it is very high on the laptop problem list, it is a minimal quality built laptop, any other laptop from MSI is much, much better than this laptop!
Since my budget is low, I will buy a katana. Can I use it for 5 years without deterioration?
@@barbarossa6056 no, hinge (part between screen and keyboard will explode in 0-36 months no exemption)
@@MeguvexHow are you so sure?
was planning on saving up money for this laptop but hearing that the display isnt great put me off. Could u reccomend any similar laptops which is in the budget of around a grand, just want one to play esport games (overwatch, apex etx) on a nice display and frames!
Buy msi katana 15 b13vgk 2000us
is it worth buying if I have a good 4K monitor?
I own a MSI GS 63VR with a GTX 1060 which I bought used on eBay in 2017. It has the same crappy display this thing appears to have. I'm almost sure it's the same panel haha. The keyboard on this model appears to be almost the same type as the laptop I have from 2017. The point being not much has changed. I've used my old laptop with an external display because the built in screen is unbearable. I can't believe I'm considering buying and going through this again. But that horsepower for the price.
what’s better? this or the msi crosshair 16
I got over 12000 when I upgraded the ram to 32 GB (2x16gb) Corsair vengeance with your overvlock preset. Cheers man. The temps went high on the none overclocked CPU so re pasted with mx4 but GPU overclocked never went over 70c
Was upgrading the ram simple or difficult?
@@chimaoduoza3793 Not at all, unscrew all the screws underneath, back just clicks off very easily and ram is right there
I honestly hate the way modern laptops are now for their storage media because i am using an 8tb 2.5" SSD in my main system and thought about selling my desktop for a very good gaming laptop but since all modern types i have been seeing only opt for M.2 devices it turns me away which come on you can also see they always have an empty spot to fit one in but no sata connection to plug one in.
Theoretically, it should be possible to connect a SATA SSD to an M.2 port using an adapter...
Can I buy this and connect it to a better screen instead? I'd like to use it when I'm travelling as well.
Of couse, but when traveling you would probably be forced to use laptop screen.
Why this laptop gpu never goes to 100w? Is it something wrong?
Whatre you think is better helios 300 i9 rtx 3090 or the Msi i7 rtx 4060
3090
Guys please help I cant decide between a rtx 4060 (75w) for $1385 or rtx 3070 ti (140w) for $2045. I feel like can offer a kinda same performance but on 40s you get frame gen etc.
Check my laptop list deals. Links on it to Legion 5 with 3070 ti for $1499. Link to list in description
Or potentially the Zephyrus G16 is also a better option imo.
Don’t get 4060 all these pcs have micro stutter and unstable frames it’s not good no one has figured out a fix either
@@brandongrimm7562 I have yet to find much evidence of your claims mate, must not be many cases.

Hello i bought this without knowing the screen is a bit bad , the quality not so much but the nits is the thing bothering me , its dim. I just got the computer and i think its got glitches , when i play music it sounds like the computer freezes for a milisecond and it translates to the music , it is driving me crazy ! Im thinkin of sending it back , or do you think it will correct it self with the auto updates ? Am i correctly thinking that when time passes they correct said glitches?? It also doesnt download the rgb app so im stuck with how it came. Tyvm for answering.
Hi, it’s been a while, I wanted to know if you managed to fix it or if you returned it? Also is it still dim if I’d plug it into a monitor?
@@JoshxMemesI had an issue that I couldn’t adjust the volume, but driver updates solved everything. The sound quality is very good. I listened to music and played metro exodus on it. No sound issues.
@@JoshxMemes I changed it for a legion 5 pro
How does this hold against Legion 5 pro with 4060 ?
Legion pro 5 has better display and chassis. Would probably recommend the Legion over this one unless this one is cheaper
well, what about legion 5 slim with 7840hs and 4060 ?
is 4070 here a dealbreaker ?@@GizmoSlipTech
Is this laptop compatible for VR gaming? It shows on the website but there is not Much information about it.
Basically every laptop is compatible with VR gaming, especially the wireless streaming VR. I have used quite a few laptops with the Quest 2 with Virtual Desktop streaming.
@@GizmoSlipTech i got a Oculus Rift S but i needed a adapter for it to connect with the display Port. hopefully it will work with this laptop.

I have this PC exactly did u do other settings in BIOS that i didnt see like changing tdp which is at 45 ?
I disagree with your conclusion. I would recommend a quality, discounted model from last year that this machine. $1500 isn't chump change, and you can get some quality machines for that kind of money. The 4070 in this machine isn't bringing enough over the 3070 for serious consideration. This machine has far too many compromises to make it worth recommending.
Hey, feel free to disagree with me, but you should rewatch my conclusion then, because I do recommend other laptops over this one. The only exception would be if they are mainly going to use an external monitor, then this one isn’t a bad option imo.
@@GizmoSlipTech We have a difference of opinion. You do recommend this machine for certain users. I wouldn't recommend it under any circumstances. That's why I said I disagreed.
@@darrell9616 Aww..I see. Perfectly valid opinion, though I don’t think the build quality is as bad as you are thinking it is. Honestly, feels not terrible in hand.
@@GizmoSlipTech You are right on the build quality. The terrible screenis more of a deal breaker for me TBH.Any of the Legions from last year are better from what I saw here. I've priced LCD panels in the past and it's interesting how much you can get, especially at volume, for an extra $20.
@@GizmoSlipTech If you're mostly using an external monitor because your screen is so garbage, just get a desktop lol. I never understand that argument. Your laptop isn't mobile if that's the use case plugged into a monitor. Hence why having a decent screen is one of the most important things on a laptop.
16GB DDR5 ram how many MHz ?
How much FBs can you get on Minecraft with an rtx 4050-4070 laptop with best settings and can you record on obs studio with 16gb ram? Or stream on it lemme know people and how much better is it from gtx 1650 laptop compared to 4070 I’m gonna upgrade next month 😂❤❤❤
Why is RDR 2 fps so low ?
Legion slim 5 with 4070 has 96 fps.
I wanna this but I'm worried about the other slot to nvme. It is so weird!
I find it almost criminal that they sell gen 13 + a 4060 and a gen 12 + a 4070.
The CPU is almost the same anyway
I mran its only 799 here in the nl so a pretty good deal
This is a killer machine it will do anything even for creators.
the GPU was probably limited to 105W because the 4050-4070 don't gain performance past 100W.
People say laptops are expensive but will pay the same price for an iPhone 🤣
How much fps on csgo2 pls told me 🙏🙏🙏😭
Katana 15 or Cyborg 15?
I hope you make review of the pulse 15 as well in comparison to this laptop. since it almost has the same specs.
I’ve never experienced more than 60 FPS with my monitor. Not that I could achieve it on most games with my GTX 1660 with the rubbish cooling
