    I recently used multiband compression successfully for the first time after watching your videos. I had a frustrating buildup where the sub bass coming in was making everything else sound a little quieter because I was using regular compression on the instrument bus. Using multiband fixed it! Thank you :)

  • @NoahHornberger
    @NoahHornberger 5 лет назад +3

    thanks for the great demo .you can also fix one-offs like those cello bumps by creating a strong EQ / compression fix and only activating it for the quick passage with automation. If you have enough recorderd material it can also be possible to crossfade parts of other clean notes into the bad one to replace it in the mix. Surgical edits are usually challenging but kind of fun when you find a solution and no one will know

    The vocal example where you described a singer moving back & forth really struck a chord with me. One of my band mates, who continued to record with me after the band broke up, sometimes rocked back & forth when he sang. He did that when he sand sitting on the floor. I told him there's no way to fix the volume changes in the vocals. This was before I started using a DAW. I was using an external multi-channel recorder. Compressors are amazing for this reason, as well as isolating things in a DAW & doing volume changes that way.

    Good tips. I've not tried multiband compression yet. I'm using the F6-RTA on specific frequencies on individual sections (1st/2nd vlns, violas, cellos, double bass) as there are certain notes that are just louder and more resonant and overpowering than others. I also like the API-2500 compressor on strings because it has HPF/LPF and L/R link controls.

    tbh, in your first example, your first choice shouldn't be either eq or any compression. Especially with the way you described how much you like the sound and performance already. And I would agree...it already sounds great. Instead, volume automation is the cleanest, most natural choice. Maybe if these plucks were occurring all throughout the mix and was feeling lazy, then I would go back to considering compression, which can be though of as automatic volume automation. When you were describing the vocal, is the best example of that exact situation. But even then, for vocals, I recommend manual volume automation first before reaching for compression for a cleaner, more natural sounding performance. That being said, I do feel your final example is exactly the situation where multiband compression makes more sense because plucky guitars in general sound great through multiband compression without volume automation because of the nature of the sound (plucky). It's easier to tame plucks from strumming while keeping a natural sound with compression vs. sustained sounds like cellos, vocals, etc. I'm happy you mentioned dynamic EQ as well, it's absolutely a great option (I prefer it to multiband compression in most cases). I actually went over that myself in terms of sidechaining in FL yesterday.

    Love your tutorials, bruh. Very detailed and clean cut. A suggestion (or request) is to use a different genre/style. Specifically if I was to ask, Modern Hip-Hop like: Young Thug, Uzi, Gunna, etc. Not sure if you’re into those styles or artists, but if you’re lookin’ to gain more traction to this channel, I 100% guarantee that will do the tricc. I say this with confidence bc like I said, love your tutorials, but they just don’t work for my style because I don’t use the same style of music (which obviously requires different mixing approach).
