Obviously you aren’t considering that people do have a budget by giving it to the Golf, a car which cost way too much when compared spec to spec to the Toyota or Hyundai. You complained about the Hyundais fuel consumption but gave the victory to the golf. A car which NEEDS premium fuel. Which ends up costing a good $20-$30 extra than regular unleaded and ends up being more expensive in the end anyway.
very good points, and no mention of how much more powerful the i30 N-line is (40kw more on 91ron) and the golf uses very similar fuel usage to the golf (but 98 ron)! Yet the voice over says how juicy the i30 is, but not the golf!?
I am of course biased as I have an N-line to pick up from the dealer next week, and looking forward to it. I chose cost, , equipment (especially cooled seats in the Premium model) handling, some performance gains with still pretty good fuel use over slightly better refinement. I still find it a bit funny Im replacing an older golf with a Hyundai, but they have had very good reviews and come on a long way over the years.
Compared to the new golf on road cost, I've saved about $7k too!

I'm in the market for a car right now so have been looking at many reviews.... The Toyota Hybrid is by far the best and gets almost 1100km on one tank of 91-fuel.
@@kienfung3045 these car of the year things always feel like they are. One point they kept banging on about the old Cerato or i30 circa 2010 despite it being a fairly ordinary car.
Drive is so out of touch with the average consumers on so many points, fuel, servicing, etc, and of course they pick the highest priced unit, because they don't have to pay for it

Let’s buy a car that requires Premium Unleaded in the era when standard unleaded is getting as high as $2.30 a litre, or even higher. 🤦♂️

Drive are always biased as, almost zero credibility. Check out Car Expert or Chasing cars if you want a proper balanced view. The fact you would recommend a car that uses premium unleaded when fuel prices are through the roof.... Clearly you guys have no understanding of the market.
Chasing Cars is ok but they use the kind of flowery motoring journo language that CarExpert set out to avoid even in their intro. Paul is very systematic and I like that, these Channel 9 network car of the year things are a joke, even Wheels has more basis in fact and that is saying something.

Most of VW fans or Car reviewers blame the new VW infotainment system and touch system.

Yeah, this is a promotion rather than a neutral review, the car review biz is full of spin and back door advertising deals. How about looking at value for money, running costs, prices etc. You've set the parameters you want, to get the VW the win. Plenty of other reviews have marked the Golf touch screen for all controls a deal breaker. The VW needs premium fuel, and costs more to service. No mention of those here...
But does it come with a jack and crank for the spare wheel?
Test drive vw golf is a must to understand why the driving experience is great (in highway and passing lane). Hybrid system add on, the cost of replacement of Hybrid battery fm dealer (not after market) and generator replacement if required in long-term.
Premium petrol you will see an increase in range from using the more efficiently burning fuel, this can be a gain depends on each manufacturer.
Preferably knobs for volume and aircon controls at least.
I’ve had a Golf for 7 years and it’s worth it’s weight in gold. Worth every penny and cannot wait to upgrade.

What prices?
We have a r line, it is so refined for a small car, hit sport mode and it becomes quite sporty and fun driving it hard. Realistically , VW are in a level of its own sitting in between mainstream and entry level luxury brands, my partners car, I drive an M2 comp and have owned other luxury brands so have experience to back up my automotive experience.
You guys need to really reconsider the variables in this test. The Hyundai is using Michelin tyres, of course it's going to have excellent handling. Doesn't take a couple of judges to figure that one out. If you want it to be fair, at least give the same tyres/fuel/anything else for each vehicle. Otherwise, you guys are going to end up being biased and unfair.

What about Mazda 3?
A good car no doubt, but not one of the three at the top. Cerato is another one that missed by a whisker.

@@Drivecomau So somehow the Mazda3 got second place ahead of the i30 last year, and despite being a more refined and better equipped car than the i30 somehow it has vanished from at least getting 3rd place in 2022 even though the i30 didn’t get updated to make it any more competitive?

Volkswagen Golf deserves a so-called twin-charger (supercharged-turbo), Toyota Corolla needs a 1.2 turbo run on E10 unleaded from CH-R and Hyundai i30 the N-line turbo could run on E10 unleaded instead of regular.

At least Wheels car of the years goes by better stats. This is a huge joke by Drive, just get some people to ramble car words and hope they fool the general public to go against better judgment and buy an unreliable VW. May as well say “Sponsored by VW”
In the US, Golf is the worst car to buy unless you want to visit the mechanic every other week. I would go with the Toyota and then the Hyundai.

Australians know what’s good for them and that’s the car that doesn’t cost a bomb to service and repair when it inevitably has some issue and isn’t woefully underequipped for the price. There’s a reason the Corolla, i30, Cerato and Mazda3 on the more premium side like the VW claims to be all outsell this. Unlike these “reviewers” the buying public are using their own hard earned cash hence make more intelligent decisions as reflected by our sales charts.
