Nice! It takes honesty to show those clutch drop, lunge, out takes 👍
been there, done that, but never showwed on camera yet ;-)
Good video, but you should have noted what (if anything) the gear transmission means for the PTO.
Love to see a new geared tractor!!
I never thought I would see a 9x3 transmission in a new tractor especially one of that size class.
I am glad Kubota offers more manual shifting tractors. It is a lot cheeper in the future to only change a clutch than change a clutch pack on a hydrostatic and yo also get higher PTO and Wheel HP on a manual trans.
Sweet, didn't know you get more hp especially for pto!
@@jimmielittle877 big time
I live about 4 hours away in VA and I would be willing to make the drive just to buy my tractor from Neil.
Always good to see Messicks videos pop up in my recommended.
Same here
Thanks for the overview. Ordered mine this week!
love the new kubota compact tractors and love your channel and tractor with tim’s channel as well my 2 best channels.
Grew up with a geared tractor nice to see this in the lineup !!
I have one already for few months, loved. Very powerful, quick up to I believe 18mph on last gear, don’t see any problem to work with loader, just have to get use to, but one think which I don’t like - to put on gear and start driving unfortunately you need to press and release clutch, in same time when clutch is pressed - PTO stop turning, so for example can’t work with stump grinder which you have to pull forward 2” then back up 2”, or I bought tractor with brush hog, again when you put on gear and start moving slowly - first few inches will not cut because PTO taking some time to speed up to 540rpm other then that - so happy, very good compact size tractor.
love the bloopers at the end !
I used to mow with a Case 1290 which was made in England by another company, can’t remember now as it was in the early 80’s. It had 4 ranges and a 3 speed stick. It was a blast to drive. With the foot throttle it was easy to speed match when shifting. I mowed lots of state ROW with it and a B106 Woods 72” mower.
The English tractor company was *_"David Brown"_* They were white & orange like a Case. Only ever seen 1 when I was about 14. But.....I'm nearly certain that's the company you are referring to.
I have a L3200 gear drive and a B2301 hydrostatic. The gear drive is great for discing or mowing a field. Select your gear, set your engine speed and go. You can concentrate on the task at hand. The B2301 is my designated loader tractor, where a Hydrostatic transmission is a much more practical application. Set your throttle and concentrate on the loader controls as well as the direction pedal. Nothing beats a Kubota.
So how about mowing a yard with the 3speed?
Interesting addition. If I'm not mistaken the gear transmission tractors also have lower maintenance costs. Well unless you need a clutch replaced.
The routine maintenance costs seem about the same as the manual lists changing the transmission fluid at 400 hrs for both the HST and gear drive units. As for repairs, I suspect having a clutch replaced would cost much less than having the HST pump replaced or rebuilt. Other than splitting the tractor, changing tractor clutches is fairly straight forward.
Good addition to the lineup, it should quite the cheap import salesman. Also great explanation of the difference in operating this transmission.
Love a standard transmission
Me too. Now.......How about a hand clutch, flat metal seat, narrow row crop front end and no ROPs? You know........Something the wife could mow the pond bank with.
Just push the wife in with bricks jb welded to her neck. Save the tractor!
@@raymond3803 I have a slightly used ji case you might be interested in. Even has a hand crank so you'll never be stranded.
@@mrsmith2876 My Dad had a Super C Farmall with a hand crank. Miserable piece of equipment
@@raymond3803 didn't say it wasn't, just reliable. Well moreso than the 6 volt starter.
Wooo hooo!! Double clutching! That brings back memories from my earlier days of long haul trucking! Hey can you “float” those gears by using throttle to break the torque to shift instead of the clutch?
If done correctly, yes, yes you can, do it all the time
Yeah but it's a bad idea on a tractor. Lots of reduction happening, so lots of gears spinning very fast and making good opportunities to chip some gears.
Wish that was available when I bought mine
It can also trim hundred or two off every service with less hydraulic stuff to leak.
Shame it isn't synced but it's not ultra necessary in this size class anyway.
In the beginning I would have my tractor repaired or serviced I would bring it to the the dealer and pay huge repair bills
Today I service and repair my tractor myself, I am able to tear my tractor apart to little pieces and put it back together.
Gosh I remember paying 225.00$ for a guy to a replace a simple hose, I was so dumb back in the days.
And it will trim THOUSANDS off if you ever need to have a hydrostatic transmission repaired. :-)
I recently bought a B2401 and so far my only complaint is it doesn't have a tilt steering wheel like the other B series do. This makes it hard to mount the tractor and slide your legs in under the steering wheel to access the seat. The dealer moved the seat back but it is still a pain to get into the seat. The seat is quite comfortable by the way.
Love the geared transmissions. Glad to see it come back. Until two years ago I had never owned a hydrostatic. I was sorry i traded my old kubota in. I'll probably never buy another hydrostatic tractor.
Dean Barr I have not driven a hydrostatic, what don’t you like about it? Pros, cons?
Is it hard to mow a yard with 3 speed?
@@jimmielittle877 no
@@curtcmiller I test drove one, you don't get the speed, and you lose HP to the wheels and pto, you can feel the slippage, if you do a ton of hard back n forth then yeah a hydro would be a plus because its faster and you're not burning the clutch, but if you need torque gear seems better, just saw a vid where a guy test pulled both and the hydro just slipped internally, wheels did not turn, gear drive ripped out
Hi Neil Messicks first I would like to say a big thank you, as your brilliant videos persuaded me to buy a new Kubota G26 mower and a used Kubota B2530. They are great! I am now saving for a 9 tonne Kubota excavator. My question is can the sway bars on this B2401 fit onto my B2530 (instead of the turn buckles I have now?) if yes would you mind giving the part numbers or if it’s a kit the part number for the kit. Many many thanks and keep up the great work Kubota should give you Social Media Salesperson of the year 2018 to 2020!! You are a real asset to them. Kubota’s own RUclips video are shockingly bad... they need to take lessons from Messicks. Well done
I have heard they do, but can't say for sure. Not sure ok the UK models, different than our stuff
Messick's Equipment hi Messicks please can you send me your email address to order Kubota parts from you as I cannot find the parts/part numbers on your website for the B2401 and I would like to order a kit or selection of parts for the stabiliser bars that effectively replace turnbuckles on older models . Including the brackets and nuts bolts washers etc . If you email me I can discuss with my requirements as phoning you will be very difficult. Your help would be much appreciated

Can you do a more detailed review of this machine, and it’s quirks? Thinking of buying and having hard time deciding on 2401 or 2601.
Kubota is Killin it.
That’s a cute little tractor. Kubota tractors without a loader look so good.
I call that "running stubby" when i take my FEL off for mowing duty with my 2650. The cab really adds to the effect in this mode (tall height, shorter front)
Their cool without one but its always nice too have the mount option just "in case" you need or want one then again their are box blades
Do they have telescoping arm on the lx 2610. If so will those arms fit a b2601 if so how much are they
I looked at the Land Pride quick hitches. All I can say is Kubota is pretty proud of them given the high price.
Loose, they are expensive. Need to remember most are sold with implement discounts often making them nearly free
I have an 8N with a loader. If the damn thing ever broke in half it sounds like I would be right at home on this and get 4WD and better PTO and 3 pt control to boot.
Compared to an 8N this is a luxury machine. The L2501 is also available in a gear drive.
could not be happier with my gear drive l2501 it's a awesome tractor don't like hydros so it was a easy Choice
@@lowermichigan4437 Compared to an 8N a seat with padding is a luxury machine.😀
Be tough to part with my BX but if I had more room...
Why are rear remotes offered on the B2301/2601 & not the B2401 or is this merely an omission on Kubota's site?
Also, why is the 3rd function on the FEL no longer listed as an option on the B01 (it used to be)?
I just bought an L2501 HST from a local dealer new. It did not have a loader so they have to install it. Is it bad to buy a tractor without loader and add it? Im sure they are all put on at dealer but just a thought.
Geared tractors can be great, but thanks to Father Time, I now have five I can't use. My brother bought a geared one for his retirement present and now wishes he had gone with HST; just something to consider.
Love the Gear drive! Less fuel used per hour vs HST.. Less heat and works ten times longer then HST before you need a rebuild.
Efficiency for sure, but i would say the HST is more reliable overall
@@MessicksEquip Is that because of the need to eventually replace the clutch or is there something else? I'm definitely considering a B2401 (& even more so now that you clarified that it's the same engine as a B2601) so this would be VERY helpful to know in making the decision.
Trying to narrow this down & honestly I was 95% sure I wanted a hydro. Was down to a B2601 vs. 2025R & wanted to check out a B2401 just to make sure I didn't prefer the gear drive but the more I think about it the more I like the idea of the gear drive - I am new to equipment (have run forklifts) but have always had manual transmission cars & pickups (bought a new automatic truck once & sold it w/in a year). Even pushing snow I've never burned up a clutch (about wore out my left knee after 20 straight hours:)).
I'm about 90 min. away and was NOT impressed w/my local dealer (Gateway) so was going to stop up - Hopefully this week as online shows you have both a B2401 & B2601 in stock and I'd like to compare the two. Atlantic Tractor in Oxford has a 2025R so was going to make a day of it and do back to back comparisons as I'm about ready to order something & if Kubota I'm inclined to buy from you - I've enjoyed & learned so much from your vids (thx!). Of course there are things I like more about both Deere & Kubota but definitely need to be sold on Kubota's belly mower attaching vs. Deere - I know you're not a driveover deck fan but the Deere system looks so slick.
See you (well not you per se:)) this week! In the meantime if you could reply regarding the reliability comment that'd be great! Thanks.
@@danielsharon524 HST is not more reliable and much more expensive to fix. HST is for lawn mowers, gear drive is for tractors.
@@SCDeerAddict The vast majority of people who are running tractors this size, will need to replace the clutch way before a hydro needs rebuilt
Good move by "Bota". Will help them compete with lower cost brands. I personally prefer a hydraulic shuttle in a synchronized gear tractor but I understand the need they have. This can get you a lot of tractor for less money with the quality and support of Kubota. This will increase their sales dominance in the compact line even further. The king continues to improve.
Mikey likes it!!!
Man I want one of these SOoO bad
Can you do more videos on the 2401?
Enters: Vin Diesel. "Did someone say double clutching?"
You not supposed to Granny shift
Nothing but an HST for me especially with a loader🙂 OOPS still in gear Neil 🤔
That's my dilemma. I like the idea of the gear shift trans & wondering how it'll fare w/loader work.
How wide with R1 ag tires?
needs front brakes and a line lock for proper burn outs
Does the b2401 have any sort of shuttle shift type feature that offers synchronization between forward and reverse?
No
Do they have a foot throttle on this machine as well? Really looking at one of these to step into and out of a bx.
Yes
So double clutch just like in a road tractor?
I noticed the shift pattern is opposite of a car (3rd gear closest to driver, 1st further away). Is there a reason they do this?
Because they can.
I was looking between the l and bx. I found the b would be a better fit for me. I like the 3 cylinder diesel and the option of a gear drive transmission and a mid mount mower deck. And kubota is far superior from john deere hands down. And i own a kubota zg20 zero turn.
Good Stuff Neil... Thinking about a New/Basic Kubota BX with a Center Mower Deck to replace my Husqvarna 2010 GTH27V52LS with 450 hrs on it, got anything?
BX, or this...
@@MessicksEquip BX Neil... i already have a B2650 that I use for the back property with a LA534 Loader and a Land Pride 60 inch Brush Hog... Need to replace the Husqvarna some day though!
I grew up on gear drive transmissions
In 1st gear low range is perfect for a lot of different task whereas 3rd gear high range feels really fast(18 mph?)🌻
Now I’m really torn Neil. I could get in this tractor b2401 tractor swift tach loader ssqa bucket with 60” mmm for similar price as a Bx setup the same way. But I’m just wondering would I wish I had a hst for my loader work? I really want a B2301 but it gets somewhat pricey. I’m concerned with ground clearance if I go Bx, when I start to clean up my woods otherwise a Bx will do everything I need. With a B you get that real tractor feel. Just really torn. But the price of this B2401 has my attention at the moment
I just bought the 2401 with loader and grapple, waiting on the mower deck to come in. It reminds me of the old sears lawn mower I started out with. Its really quite compared to the HST. but if loader work is what you buy it for I would recommend the HST. I wish it was more like a shuttle shift because the shifter is on the same side as the loader valve and you will wear your knee out with constant clutch engagement
I also have a B2401 with a loader. I will say that you will be more productive doing loader work with the HST in the BX, but I enjoy operating a manual shift, so that makes up for it to me.
It would be challenging for you to make a good descision without being able to try both.
It is important to keep in mind that this won't shift like a car.
Are there other features that are lesser on the B2401 vs. a B2301/B2601?
Are the dimensions of the B2401 the same as the B2301 or B2601?
I downloaded the new brochure which answers some of this but generates even more questions. Also, based on MSRP, the B2401 is $3k less than a B2301 and $4k less than a B2601. Maybe w/discounts it equates to less, be still seemingly more than the $1500 you mentioned. MSRP on a B2401 is a few hundred less than a BX2301 and about $1500 less than a BX 2601. For that matter, MSRP on B2301 is only about $1200 more than a B2601.
Apparently the B2401 does not come w/the same highback/armrest seat or tilt steering as the HST models. I haven't tried to build a B2401 yet so not sure if optional but they SHOULD be! I should be able to get a gear drive tractor with all the premium features of a HST. Also the rear hydraulic options seem to be different on the gear drive vs. HST?
Even though the B2401 & B2601 have the same engine, the HP is lower (as you mentioned) but it says they're all rated using the same SAE specs so it seems the engine in the B2401 is actually a de-tuned version of the B2601's? Engine HP is 2.4HP less but PTO HP is only .3HP less (makes sense due to drivetrain efficiency of the gear drive). Maybe this is why they (if) they de-tune the engine - To make the PTO HP equal? Also, 3pt. lift capacity is about 8% lower on the B2401?
Dimensionally the B2401 is closer to the the B2301 & tire sizes are the same.
Not sure what the difference is between a B2401DT & B2401DTWO. Only thing in the brochure is hydraulic rear outlet on the B2301/2401DT/2601 vs. front & rear outlet on the B2402DTWO/2401DTN?
Awesome tractor for me it's gear drive or nothing
Is there a difference between 2401 stick shift and the L series stick shift?
Yes, its a more modern stick shift with synchronizers and shuttles.
Something for people to consider when looking at a machine like this. There are some advantages to a stick just like there are advantages to a hydrostatic trans. But if you are buying something like this because it is $1,500 cheaper just realize that when you are financing for 60 months that's only $25 a month difference.
I was wondering why he gave the "Woops!" look at 2:56, and found out why at 6:52. Another example of "Do as I say, not as I do!"
If the engine on the 2401 is the same as the 2601 why does the Kubota website show different hp for each? Has there been a change? Thanks for the video!
same engine, but rated with a different testing methodology.
HSTs use up too much HP. I prefer and will only buy a manual tractor.
Niel, could you do a pulling comparison between this b2401 and the 2601. Just like you did with the L series. I have an old land rover, and am no stranger to non-syncro boxes, and am thinking this 2401 might be the best for me. Thank you!
Planning on it. I do not have any 2401 in stock right now.
Does the tractor have live PTO? Is it mechanical, hydronic or electronic engagement?
It is not a live PTO, and it is mechanically operated. I have to stop the tractor with the clutch in to engage the PTO.
Interestingly, it has a two speed PTO (540, 1000), where I believe the HST's are 540 only.
Does anyone here know if manual transmissions are decent with snow blowers? I'm building a home in Nova Scotia, Canada and have a 411 foot flat gravel driveway. I was considering the bx1880 with rear snow blower or b2301 with rear blower. The 2401 has more power than those and I don't mind that it's manual( i've driven manual cars). However, I have only used small hydro garden tractors for lawns and I have never used a snow blower before. It should be interesting regardless of what I get :)
I would discourage it.
Thanks for the reply! That’s what I was thinking, but it never hurts to ask.
Does it have draft?
Kubota small tractor do not come with draft control. But this does come with position control for 3 pt hitch.
i am sure that as a dealer you know that a hydrostatic transmission is prone to failure and repairing one is next to impossible .i would always go for the clunky option.
I would not agree at all. It's one of the most reliable transmissions, and mechanically easy to understand and work on?
I bought a 2020 b2601 and HATE the treadle pedal I like this machine Its good. if you have to get USED to it something is wrong, plus the heel/leg muscles are not design to press down directly down and slightly back like out front and forward its just a bad idea. The reality is not getting used to it but rather living with it.
Thats the problem I'm having. Im thinking of a b2401 or b2601... rear PTO HP is a .1 difference between the two... and a 4500 difference...
What is the list price for B2401 with 54"deck?
Kubota has a build and price tool on their website that you can find this and see how the options impact the price.
B2401 is $11,900 with 54" deck $1700 thx
I’d take this over the LX just because of Gear drive. But I’m 28 and act 68 lol
as my friend just found out, geared tractors move at a certain speed and can't go slower, whereas hydrostat can go any speed depending on how much you press the pedal,, this comes in handy when plowing or mowing in tall grass. his tractor can't move as slow as he would like when using a rotaty hoe.
I can't imagine any tractor in its first gear would be going too fast. They're just geared so low. Especially that 1st gear
@@jthomp997 Depending on what you are doing 1st can still be too fast, especially when working in very tight quarters like in a yard. It seems like only very large tractors have a dedicated creeper gear.

Awesome! Do you mow with it? How do you mind doing front end loader work with the standard transmission?
Its a shame everything has to dumbed down for the masses nowadays, years ago when I was shopping for a mid size tractor I wanted a stick shift. I looked at all the big names and the only one I could find was the Kubota MX 5100. I am still very happy with it, no DPF nonsense on it.
I grew up with stick shifts. The first car I really drove was a '49 Willys Jeep with a stick, first tractor was an Yanmar with a stick. Since then, I've owned 4 or 5 vehicles with a manual, 1 currently ('96 F150). Two motorcycles currently as well.
And I'm glad manuals are dying. They're simply a part of the past that I'm happy to walk away from. It's not that I'm bad at driving them, I have just really come to appreciate how much more capable automatics (or hydrostatics in this case) are.
My BX1880 is so much more productive than that old Yanmar just because you don't have to shift. My '89 F-250 (auto) is so much less of a hassle to tow the horse trailer because you can just release the brake and go, and handles heavier trailers much better with the same engine thanks to the torque converter. I rode a Zero SR (electric motorcycle) and it will be my next bike.
I agree and have a similar experience. Manual transmission is not for me either. However with tractors & farming if I needed a tractor for mowing or ploughing I’d consider getting a tractor with manual transmission. Manual transmission tractors are quieter than ones hydrostatic transmissions.
@@supersnot4 hydrostatic transmissions in tractors still haven't outpaced manuals in almost every way like automatics in passenger vehicles. They don't deliver the power to the wheels as well(especially noticable when running ground engaging implements), still are much more vulnerable to overheating, have lower PTO HP for the same engine(though not much less on modern ones), and are more noisy. They remain primarily a convenience(and safety for inexperienced operators) feature, but one that is useful enough that the vast majority of buyers want, despite the added cost and downsides. This is especially so if they plan to do any loader work or work in tight spaces.
@@supersnot4 I just prefer the simplicity of a manual trans, on a tractor the learning curve is really small because your not shifting it like a car. You get more pto power and its all mechanical and easy to work on if I ever have to, which I highly doubt.
I agree they dumb everything down for people that are lazy or don't understand how crappy hydros are and can't run a manual I won't own a hydrostatic tractor just a waste of power and hate the need for high rpms to actually do work since the beginning of time diesel have been lower rpms lugging engines that last forever hydros have changed that with there demand for rpms
Question: why the 3(or 4) forward 1 reverse (* ranges) transmissions on this and the L-01 series instead of a shuttle shift? I'm not talking about a power reverser or anything, but just a synchronized shuttle like some companies offer on their competitors to the L-01 series, and iirc was on a mini articulated wheel loader you showed one time?
Side note: Last I looked, one of the spec pdfs available on the kubota website claims the L-01 series has synchro shift as an option instead of the manual 4-1 that everything else claims.
Cost. Shutting transmissions cost more.
