- Carving Canoe Paddles from an ash Log at the Bushcraft Camp. We use axe, bucksaw, drawknife, crook-knife and a carving knife for this project. Dylan also shows how to make a fire in wet conditions without making feather sticks.

Theres something realy satisfying about those long wood shavings...
I showed that particular part to the rest of my family and they loved it just as much as 👌

For real though. I wonder who came up with it originally and how they thought of it... We may never know
Still commonly used in carpentry, hard to beat it when you need a marking for a long straight line between two points, fast, easy and precise.
Its usually a spool of thread that you can wind up in a container of coloured powder, so no charcoal anymore. Easy to repair and refill, so it will most likely last a life time of even professional use. Just a great and pretty genius tool.
My guess it’s probably an old technique, hundred if not thousand of years old. I’m leaning towards thousands, but that is just a guess.
Whoever came up with the idea, hit the jackpot
I'd like to see you guys do some more chalenges. See who survives better etc.... may be with fishing. Cooking what you catch. And some shelter building from scratch. Love u r work

Interesting comment. I guess I agree but, seriously? From that whole video, the major thing you took from it was the 'slight hair on his face'... Kinda superficial if you ask me.

When you have watched these guys from the very beginning, you start to feel like they are friends and just like a friend you hadn't seen in a few weeks who changed hair styles, lost weight or started a beard etc that suits them, you would compliment them on it. Not superficial at all.

Nice one lads. I've made a few paddles over the years with my axe and knife. Must be 10 years since I made my last one and I still use it on occasion. Great film as usual. I like your films lads because it's not about kit and nearly always more about skills and what you can do with the kit you have 👍. Enjoyed that one fellas. All the best for the New Year 🔥

When I was a wee lad my parents took us to a theme park called timber town showcasing the early years of timber productions in australia.a man giving a demonstration on how to cut a railway sleeper with an adze used a piece of cordage to mark the straight lines ,he rubbed the corsage against a burnt eucalypt tree to cover it in char you took me back to my child hood when you used this method cheers guys and a happy New Year.

This is one of your best videos to date. There's no competition element which is good.
You should both invest in a ten pack of thin work gloves. I'm an almost 50yr old carpenter and only started wearing gloves at work since it became mandatory about 10yrs ago.
I'd only not wear gloves doing that kind of work, if for some reason I forgot to take a pair.
That injury looks like it's at that pleasant tingly stage of healing.
That injury will make you stronger.

Julius I predict that your paddle will get dry cracks despite keeping it moist. But I'm still surprised how a non-specialist can do such good carpentry. Of course there are ways of working that would probably have made your life at work easier.

I attempted a dug out canoe 2 years ago. I put 8 months work into it ( every Saturday ) it ended up failing. I would suggest doing all the research you can and to be careful not to let the wood check.

Very enjoyable video. I like that bushcraft vice/ work bench you made to hold the paddle. Also Julius is very good at the detail work with the axe. Both paddles look very nice. How long did it take to make the paddle once you had the log split?

Its called the BittyBigQ grill.
We got one sent over to us to use and review, we just started using it and so far it seems solid, functional and practical to use. i wouldnt call it very lightweight/small but those are all personal opinions. (bit more on it in our latest gear vid)
@@SmoothGefixt Thanks very much. I just had a quick look there and it seems a bit pricey as an import, but maybe it'll be cheaper once UK distributors get hold of it.
At the moment I just use old tent pegs balanced on rocks to do the job, but they're not great like! Thanks again.

I think Dillon is right about grabbing an insert from an old grill . I do most of my outdoor cooking on a Kelly kettle hobo stove. Big open fires use up way more firewood.
You've probably seen Alfie Aesthetics small grate on tent pegs setup. Or set it over a Dakota fire pit🔥

For all that splitting you should have made a wooden hammer first.

On another axe safety note; if you fit a leather axe mask before using the back to pound in splitting wedges then you remove the possibility of an axe cut like Dylans. In this video we see Julius repeatedly swinging an exposed blade towards his own face - That is not going to end well! Did we not learn anything this month? Please be safe!
During the making of this vid, Julius tried keeping the sheath on. he found that it would come off after 2/3 good hammer strikes so he gave up.
i imagine a little paracord lace over the original strap would go a long way on that, and i will do this in the future!! (learned the hard way!)
