Folks! Prepping for the Roof Build! Next week Friday the Roundhouse Series will be back! 3pm ET (US) / 8pm (UK) & 21.00u (Central Europe) Enjoy!
Let the stone do the work. Best advice I got from dad when learning to sharpen a knife.
My grand father from Cornwall, England had a pocket knife with him for all occasions I remember him using it to cut off pieces of chewing tobacco, peel apples , clean his pipe & making cuttings in the garden. Now I still have the same worn knife in my pocket. Always sharp but with much smaller blades. My grand children hope that one day it will go to one of them. Stay Safe. Thanks for the video. Brian 80
That's a nice story, thanks for sharing:)
Nice to see you chill and sort equipment before the build.
"How many of you have a pocket knife and actually know how to sharpen it?"
Raises hand. Though I learnt to sharpen in the process of learning to make knives.
IPostSwords best thing about my opined is the steel is not super hard, so goes from super sharp quite quickly BUT it's equally quick to bring back to razor sharp, meaning it doesn't feel like a chore so I actually regularly sharpen it
Nice video again! Very interesting and entertaining content as usual, even if I already know how to sharpen my axe! :) 15 minutes seem to pass in a second this way! Keep it up with all the fun content and the great work, seems like you always know how to make a video to entertain me, whatever you folks do. Looking forward to the next Smooth Gefixt Friday!
Thanks for the supportive comment my friend!
Thanks for the advanced sharpening video. So important to have sharp tools. Makes life enjoyable.
Best part about being a blacksmith is I know how to make my own tools and yes I know how to keep said tools sharpened if required. Good stuff guys.
I'm over 70 and I wach this program. I live in the United States.
Waiting for the round house to be done. You're technique is very interesting.
highlight of my week
Been sharpening various implements since 1977. Good to see y’all know yer shit.
I'm really looking forward to seeing more of the roundhouse build, it's looking so good!
Hey hey, you're all back at it!
Can't wait to watch this video tonight!
Thanks for this interesting video again ☺
I love sharpening my tools but I remember wen I started sharpening I hated it but then I got really good at it and then I loved it ☺️
Nice build up and prep for the build and informative to boot
Love the vid man keep it up me and a couple buddy’s are actually building a European style log cabin right now ur vids inspire me to get out and do a lot more
nice one, guys. and sharpening is one skill that I rank among those of highest import. I find it surprising most don't know at least the basics.
Wonderful as always! Keep it up! I think I could watch you two do anything :D
my brother recommended you to me because we both like bushcraft, Hi Bro! :D
I have many sharp tools I know how to sharpen properly. I learned at culinary school. But you are completely right about why bother if you do not know how to keep them proper.
So many wonderful tools!
Great video guys keep it up
I have a Gerber "Gator" pocket knife that I've used for the last 30 years. It's maybe a 1/4 inch shorter than it was when I bought it but still razor sharp.
I love watching you guys and I was planning on doing what you guys are doing on
summer camp but it got canceled keep up the good work
Love watching these vids, cheers guys.
Also, I keep a sharp pocket knife and some other equipment in an army jacket I often wear.
Never know when I'll need em.
Sitting at the campfire after dinner sharpening your knife.. The survivalchill experience isn't fully realized without that^^
Haha, nice one Jornt!
I learned to sharpen from my father and as a chef. I also found the edge I like most and can buy then change a edge. Great video as always my friends!
Cool vid bros
funnily enough yesterday i was watching one of your older videos where you were sharpening blades , i paused video to get my bushcraft knife & my pocket knife & sharpened them while watching the rest of the video .. years ago someone told me a sharp knife is safer as it's less likely to slip ( i also learned a skin cut from a sharp knife heals cleaner )
A diagonal brace on your sawhorse will make it a lot more stable.
I use a lot of scandi grind knives, super easy to maintain
I recently started a channel. I have a few videos on sharpening. I agree with Dylan on both points. If you don’t know how to sharpen the tools, it really doesn’t matter how expensive they are, and also sharpening should be enjoyable, not frustrating.
Nice one Kevin! we seen you around for a long time, thanks!
I could’ve watched Dylan sharpen the knives forever with that editing 🤯that was awesome
Thanks Halia!, nice to see you and your interest in bushcraft around:)
Julius builds intricate and beautifully shaped baton...
Me: " I think i need a baton" pulls out log
Let's see how long it lasts;)
Great episode. I was hoping you would show how to sharpen that auger.
How I would love to be able to do the things you guys do
Also maintaining my blades are fun😉
Very true. I'm no expert. The best way to learn is practice. That's what I do. Always learn something new on every trip. I set up a channel to show this exact point. You dont have to be an expert to enjoy being outdoors. Take care guys. Si
@MarkisTG sadly I don't have woods or large forestry near by so I sadly can't really. You would think that since I live in South Africa we would but we mainly have nature reserves and game parks so we cant really do that but I see your point 😊
Even if you have to look you can find a place to go out and do this, it's worth the effort for the lovely fun
Although I live on a large segment of property it's mostly fields so I go and camp out and do Bushcraft on other properties {Usually with permission}
@@jamesmoreland7569 cool man
i'm an ex butcher and learnt how to sharpen knives whilst butchering.
I love Japanese wet stones.
I have recently taken up whittling and are learning a whole new set og skills with knife work and sharpening.
Hi I really like your videos. I think you should make video about
The gransfors bruks carving axe it looks interesting
Great video guys!
I learned to be into sharping by being into cooking and food.
You need to be able to keep your knifes incredibly sharp in order to have any sort of control and efficiency in the kitchen.
I started with those V sharpeners that make the angle for you.
Then bought two dubbed sided Japanese wet stones (incredibly expensive things, but an amazing investment that I’ll probably be able to use the rest of my life), and a few super cheap knifes from a second hand store and started practicing (gave the sharpened and restored knifes to my younger sister who just moved into her first apartment).
For people who are not into sharpening, ask you local cooking specialty store if they do knife sharpening and if they would consider sharpening an outdoors knife.
The sort of store where you can buy like a +150€ chef knifes from, doesn’t need to be too fancy. Many of them offer a knife sharpening service.
Some have their own sharpening machines in the backroom or have a contact they send them too. You’ll probably get the knife back either right away or in a couple of days.
Getting it sharpened isn’t too expensive, around like 6-12 euro per knife in my experience. But it adds up over time.
So if you have a few nicer knifes with pretty rough and beat up knife edges, and you don’t have the knowledge or the energy to bring them back, then maybe it’s worth getting it professionally done like once or twice a year.
I’ve bought back a few friends knifes that where just filled with deep jacks and nicks for practice, and even with a 240 grit stone it took a lot of work to get them out.
In the future I might consider paying someone who has a machine that can cut that work into a few minutes pretty worth it.
I just saw this is fresh from July!
I keep a sharp knife. Nothing quite like sharpening your knife while quietly sitting by the campfire. Backwoods meditations.
Love it !!
Great aflevering guys! I loved it.
Nice work and good information.
"Rewarding" is a good word to describe sharpening a knife. It is monotonous and frustrating to learn, but once you shave hair the first time it makes you feel so accomplished. I'm still learning sharpening but I'm very glad that I am
Its so cool to see your video filming and editing skills getting better and better with each video.
Keep up the good work! :)
Nice one thanks a lot! but let's not underrate the older work:P
Try some diamond stones . They are used in tool and die /machine repairs . Always flat and cuts all blade metal . Three different grits rough / medium / fine down to about 3 microns . Love mine . I have 6 and use all the time . "Deeds not words "
Not sure how long they last? The diamond side on Dylans dc3 is proper worn out
I keep a sharp knife, There is very little difference between a dull knife and a stick.
there is one important difference: even the most careless person isn't gonna try to cut with a stick. no, they'll just ignore their dull blade slipping until it slips and cuts them. and fuck, 80% of them won't learn from that. >.>
Good work I like your character
Yo, I’m got here so EARLY, now I feel like a true subscriber lmao
New video yay
Edit: yes I know how to sharpen my equipment duhhh
I have a lot of knives😂 I love them all and they are all razor sharp!
Love Dylan's Religions of the World T-Shirt!
It's great you got the two of you to do these life activities working together. I have tried over here in the states but everyone is so Goddamned Lazy to learn Real Life Skills but while they whine and snivel they work too much in a shit job.
Hi guys, really enjoy what you are doing and your vids, yup only just realised you too are in Ireland 🇮🇪, 😀. Guessing your are deep in the south, anyway love the fun and the roundhouse
wet and s(ch)cuttery west ;)
Hi guys
SMOOOOOOOOOTH GEFIXED jongeeee!!!
Ok what the heck is a "gefixt" and why is it smooth?
First Comment! I cant wait for the stone house, love from Indonesia!
Just a matter of a good stone and proper angle and always checking your result you don’t want to over due and end up curling the edge
Great vid as usual, you might want to throw a #sponsored in the description if you have one as some countries are pretty strict on that now.
me: subscribes to see future celtic roundhouse uploads
celtic roundhouse uploads: aight im finna head out
When using that single bucksaw there should be a different bit of blade at the end, usually that is used to start a cut, you should start practising with that to make your life that bit easier
First time using the cross cut saw;) Think it also need more set
Something you should have mentioned, when sharpening DON'T WIPE THE STONE. The filings make it easier to get an edge and make the job quicker.
I sharpen my tools once a week
14:48 "Dydiówka" in Bieszczady mountains in Poland:D
It burned down;(
@@SmoothGefixt I know
I see the one guy doing the drill bits.
I have a mora companion and I can sharpen it!
Everyone should know how to sharpen 😉
there seems to be lots of resin in the log you are shaping.would you use the shavings to start a fire?
Should do yeah;) First need to make a basket to collect them!
Several pocket knives. And they are usually sharp enough to shave 😉
I have a whole system for sharpening in my mini work shop. But I wish I can have a bigger space but I am only 16 and the shop can't even fit a car so it is quit small. You should make an non electrical wood lathe search it up its so cool
A wood lathe! Yeah man! Definitely a project if the roundhouse is finished. Although might be handy for all the dowels we need for the build (?)
Where in Ireland are there huge open tracts of land? Like the ones you go out on survival expeditions in?
Not easy to find, you have to look well for it. we are in co. Galway
@@SmoothGefixt wow alright, thank you so much!
I sharpen my own tools.
What have you learned against foot fungus?
5:00 schuldig! I do.
Oil for tools : balistol
I want a big saw like the one you have! Where can I get one?
The sketchieness of a dull knife is real living boys, get a little rust on there for a 50/50 bet on whether u get a blood infection or not
i have a couple of knives. they are both blunt. tried sharpening with rocks... dunno wtf i am doing, so they will be forever dull.
You can buy a sharpening kit that you clamp the blade in to maintain the correct angle/bevel. My friend uses one and really rates it. Think you can find them online pretty cheap. Take care. Si
Can you sharpen the saws?
Have I missed an episode ?
Heloo! I have sent you guy's an email. The saw horse looks awesome!
Where do you get this hand auger?
I remember when I started sharpening. I thought it was fun because the results were decent from the start (had a good teacher) and in the end my knife was sharp enough to use it. So it was fun for me. But along the way I've ruined knives and learned alot.
Ok boys! Im 62 year old grandma. My dad died 42 years ago before he taught me! So teach me! I have many knives. I need to learn it all teach me!
Ye
Whats up with the roundhouse?
Next weeek!
@@SmoothGefixt yay!
How do you flatten, or keep the stones flat?
I don't see the point to spending all that time to sharpen that well. Use it once and that hair cutting edge is gone. Except for my straight razor. That I need a hair cutting edge every time.🙂
What about the shave horse?
Where is the new Roundhouse Episode?
This week they will upload on Saturday at normal Friday time
you can get 12 inch bench Arkansas stones from dans wet stone dot com they are not cheap but will last lifetime we have hapstone system but i like the Japanese wet stones the best. also have diamond stones
How many people have a pocket knife (case) from 1983 never sharpened?
Where's your pole lathe?
I used to be a chef my axe and knives are sharp as bleeeeeep
you asked for it so here we go:
I know how to sharpen:
(shaving)knives,
chizles,
drill bits,
and a pointy stick :P
Were did you got that hand auger?
Second hand site in the Netherlands
@@SmoothGefixt well I cant find any
But what about to sharpen from Natural stones?
