Every time I received something nice today I stood up and did a Jim Baird “yeah”. Wife and kids had no idea where that came from. Gave me a few extra laughs today. Looking forward to your next adventure.
This was a pretty cool video to watch. I've always kind of thought , logically speaking, it was possible. It made a dramatic difference to see you actually do it. Thanks for sharing!
Jim, you make this look so easy....but we know it isn’t. The Baird Boys don’t do anything easy. But, you are both really cool and great woodsmen. Great carving.
Big thanks! You basically take a log and carve away everything that's not a paddle. If you don't have a heavy-duty knife, you really gotta use two smaller wedges and lay the log in its side to split. I actually don't know if the way I do it here is any faster but it works.
Yes, 14-days wilderness camping in the Northwest Territories ep. 2 it’s at the end of....a shorter version if this paddle crafting but I always wanted to do a video just in this with some more details on how to do it so this is that.
Yup! Just kidding, no actually both of the people in this thumbnail are me haha. And I’m actually three years older than my brother Ted who I was in Alone with but a lot of people ask if we’re twins.
@@JimBairdAdventurer Ah yeah even on the show is shows your age difference, don't know how I got in my head that y'all are twins. Probably because you both kept doing the same excited yell
Nice job on a functional item. I have a 4 in one rasp in one of my kits for some ease in finishing bushy projects in the field. Not sure if it helps since I have never tried it in the field. It works well in the shop. I would say yours turned out at least as functional as Ray's and is much better than a spatula. Merry Christmas, More good times to come next year.
haha, I saw that one was Ray Goodwin with Ray Myers. Definitely not as pretty looking as Myers' paddle but I suppose with some work it could get looking nice. A pocket plane / rasp would have been perfect for this
I have been looking for that knife for years. If its a Gerber, it's the same one the DEA issued us around 2001. CCould you please post a link. I would love to get another one. Thank you very much.
Cool, ya I imagine building a Greenland stick could actually be faster than this with potentially less material to remove and a similar process. Glad you got out okay, sounds like a good adventures
dude. You are like two of me. I really enjoyed watching this, but I might not be able to do it. I say that after editing my response for words like "never" and "no fucking way" and Far too weak.' PS: I love your channel!
Thanks a lot! It’s not as hard as it looks, it just takes tome. You can also lay the log horizontally and pound wedges down in from the top which is easier
Been tuning two series with the canoe poling and fly fishing trip in Gaspé and the Arctic watershed solo one as well. I’m getting one or the other up every Friday. They’re super tome consuming to edit. Now, I’m trying to also get a Monday video up when possible so I’d have two vids per week. Usually my missy vids have to be something that’s faster to edit than the Arctic Watershed Solo or the Gaspé Adventure vids because I don’t have enough time in a week to get two of those more complex edits done.
That is a bit of a trade off. If we're just scraping off some bark, a spine works wonders. For larger amounts of material it would definitely mean more work. So the right answer becomes situation dependent - which is more valuable at that time, the calories from the work, or the sharpness of your blade? No universal "correct" answer there.
Kinda true, I included a short run through of this paddle carving in episode 2 of my 14 Days Wilderness Camping in the Northwest Territories video. This is a re-edit where I show it into more detail.
Thanks a lot, for the last two or three vids of mine, I’ve started going in to the back end and removing two commercials from every video after YT auto places them but this one I didn’t.
Not too many big logs..... as he stand in front of a Large log..... I don't always but could bring along a draw knife or spoke shave for finish off such a on site made paddle, the spoke shave would just about bring it to finished shape.
@@JimBairdAdventurer If you have a saw big enough for that log, and more wedges. I have a nice little hand plane its like 2.5 inches long and the blade is inch wide, makes great shavings for fire, it would do a fine job of shaping the handle. bit of a job on smoothing out the blade though. I have a few paddle making videos. and don't forget that pole. so easy to make a pole off the river bank and it will move that canoe too.
Hi Barbra. I’d be interested to know what your paddles are made of and what you’re house is built with. Is this any less noble of a use of wood than yours?

Haha, awesome man...glad you had a good Christmas
Nice job on the paddle still waiting for the escape the bogg swamp video series? Cheers Merry Christmas to you and your family.
Great job 👍👍 Merry Christmas to you and the Family
Me: Oh shoot! We’re in the wilderness and we lost our only paddle... Jim: hold my beer
Hahah, exactly
MERRY CHRISTMAS have a wonderfull holiday
Great job Jim Doug Linker would be proud. Merry Christmas to you and yours.

Merry Christmas to you, Tori and the little one!

Well done. Thanks for sharing. Keep your paddle in the water.
Nice Paddle Demo, and I like you did it while you were waiting for Lift.
Nice work👍
Thanks!
Right on Jim 👍

Very cool! The wedge was neat! Fun to watch! ❤️❤️
Thanks!
Merry Christmas 🎄

You’re welcome!
Merry Christmas Jim and Torri!
Just a suggestion, it would be nice if at the end of the video you mentioned how long it took you to complete the paddle.
Nice job.
Now I'm going to watch this backwards and see you make a log from a paddle...
Have a good Xmas big fella and family.
haha, that's awesome. thanks a lot and same to you!
Hi Jim I left a detailed comment in your previous video in an effort to help you improve your fly casting I hope it helps
. Enjoy your holidays
Thanks a lot, I believe I read that.

Oddly satisfying.

Merry Christmas! to you and your family Jim!
You don't want to find your self up a creek without a paddle! Merry Christmas to you and family 🎄

Boom 💥. Awesome. Very cool

Indeed it is and you kinda just want to star at it afterwards.
impressive Jim!

This is sooooo good.
Thanks a lot!
I love your stuff. Keep up the great work!!
Great video as usual.
The SP8 is the greatest big survival knife/chopper I’ve ever owned! It’s way more versatile than I imagined it would be
Yup, couldn’t agree more. This one is my brother Ted’s. He’s had it for over 15 years easy
Wait until you see what he can do with a tooth pick 😁😂😂 Happy holidays you guys!!
lol, you too
Yooooo the canadian twins from Alone!!!

Haha, probably. Funny though because sometimes in the show they even mixed us up, adding the subtitle Jim when it was actually Ted.
Merry Christmas and a happy new year to everyone there and thank you for sharing
Same to you and thanks very much!!
Great video, thanks! I was wondering if you bought or made your machete. Looks like a really useful tool.
My brother bought it well over 15 years ago, it’s great!

Really cool. It would be fun to try to make one at home. I hope I never have to make one.
Agreed, good yo know incase and a fun project but I would want to have to do it in an unplanned situation
While you made that, I found three boards on the beach. I think I'll try to make a paddle.🤣🤣
Nice, ya you could make a really nice one with scrap wood for sure.
Oddly enough, I would love to be in a situation where I would need to do this... does that make sense? lol!
It does! Lol
I hear you 👍
You can, just go out in your back yard.
I made one on the banks of the aniak River after capsized and lost a paddle, using a folding saw, a file chisel, a rock and a knife.
True story.
Awesome, ya I think it’s a good thing to know how to do when you’re paddling remote rivers.
I have been looking for that knife for years. If its a Gerber, it's the same one the DEA issued us around 2001. CCould you please post a link. I would love to get another one. Thank you very much.
Its not a gerber. The gerber golok machete is kinda comparable though but this knife is better.. it’s an SP8 by Ontario Knife Company
Just longing for my time to explore the wild
At first I thought you said logging and it was a dad joke lol. I hope you get out there before too long!
Ok, I have to try this. I wonder if you could rip the log. Not with that bow saw though.
I made a paddle it of one piece of Ash (“T”handle to pull things in) that is quite thin and silent. So far it has lasted 45 years ago.
Sounds like a thing of beauty, the T-grip is great for that for sure.
I had to build a kayak paddle to get out of the Alaska bush. We used a folding saw and fixed buck knives

learn to use your machete as a draw knife, better control and shaping. works!
Funny, I am also building a paddle right now (Ottertail)
Nice!
When are we going to hear about the rest of the Artic Watershed adventure? I'm guessing you made it out of the bush?
No, I died, just kidding lol. In due time I’ll get a bunch more eps out!

If you have a 90 degree spine on your knife, you can do the scraping with the spine and save the blade.
Interesting. Would help in the smoothing but would it remove as much material?

So the right answer becomes situation dependent - which is more valuable at that time, the calories from the work, or the sharpness of your blade? No universal "correct" answer there.
Making a paddle? Oh you better believe that's a paddlin.
Lol
I’m just trying out
