    Things don't always go as planned. Here is an example of why you should always test your cameras and equipment. Luckily, that's exactly what I was doing here.
    If you have any ideas as to what may have happened, please leave me a comment and let me know. Thanks!

    same happened to me a year ago with a bauer 3xl small. I guess that the light meter failed although the night shots were incredible ! Night shots in a room with light . I used a 500t so .... in that situation worked so good because it was overexposing all the time but in daylight no ita was a disaster

      Yep, I love this little camera for old, expired film, it over-exposes just about right. At least we know the issues now and can use these cameras accordingly. Sounds like you have yours figured out for night shots!!

    Great footage in the end, though you say you had to fix it a lot in post. I read in the comments that it could be the speed is being affected and hope you get it sorted. I have been very lucky with my finds. I actually have spares of most of my Super 8 cameras just in case!

      Thanks, and yes, very smart to have backups. This was actually the first time I've ever used this camera. In fact, I'm not even real sure where and when I got it, I just happened to dig it up while doing some re-organizing. Probably going to try and open it up, will update if anything comes of it.

    Many of my cameras overexpose too, at least on those who have some exposure indicators you can see it in advance. At leat this one would be good for shooting very old film, who needs 3-4 stops overexposure.

    I shot my first cartridge of Super 8 early this year. It was Tri-X 200 iso and my sankyo camera was metering for 100 iso the whole time. Didn't notice the mistake until I had a 80% ruined developed roll in my hands.

    Maybe the Iris/diaphragm is not responding and is stuck. An easy test is put the camera in telephoto and then place it in your lap with the lean pointing up towards you. Run the camera and then shine your phone flash light into the lens. You should see the iris or Aperture close up

    • @Filmboy24
      @Filmboy24  3 года назад

      Excellent Idea! Thanks! I just did that and it appears that the iris is opening/closing properly to light and dark. Or maybe I shouldn't say "properly" as it may not be closing enough. Great tip by the way, thanks again!

    • @alexinnewwest1860
      @alexinnewwest1860 3 года назад

      Hmmmm does the camera have an F-stop read out in the view finder.? Another quick field test is to look thew the film gate as best as possible while the camera running and again shine your flash light in the lens and you should see the light dim in the film gate.

    • @Filmboy24
      @Filmboy24  3 года назад +1

      @@alexinnewwest1860 No, no f-stop readout at all, and it does appear that the light dims properly. One thing I am curious about, and maybe you know...If the torque (due to worn belt, etc.) isn't quite enough to advance the cartridge at it's designed 18 fps and it's moving much slower, it would seem that a whole lot more light would be hitting the film than should be. Does that sound right to you? although most of the movements seem about right after scanning, so I'm really not sure...ugh...

    • @alexinnewwest1860
      @alexinnewwest1860 3 года назад +1

      Yea that would definitely have that effect. Maybe perhaps have your wife help you with a stop watch and run the camera and count how many revolutions the sprocket turn in one minute. Then compare it to a known good camera. I suspect all cameras won’t be exactly the same but if it’s a massive difference. That could be it.
      No f stop read out makes it difficult to compare it to a known camera

      @@alexinnewwest1860 well, as luck would have it, I popped in an old Kodachrome K40 cart and did some timed tests with it. Yup, pretty far off. Pretty sure that's my problem, it's exposing each frame way too long. Thanks so much again for chiming in and for the tips and suggestions, much appreciated!

    Is this the type of camera you would recommend getting an ND filter? It seems like no matter what film you use other than Ektachrome 100D the meter will over expose by 1 full stop.

    • @Filmboy24
      @Filmboy24  3 года назад

      I would say this particular camera would be a great candidate for an ND filter but it would probably need closer to 2-3 stops. I've since reassigned this camera as my Koda-Cam 40, meaning I only shoot Kodachrome K40 in it now, with no filters. Since old K-40 film usually needs a minimum of 2-4 stops (open), this camera pretty much does the trick for me.

    Hey Mike! Once again I went on another eBay camera bender lol! I bought a Chinon 133p XL claiming to be in good working order (we will see about that!) what’s the difference between the 132p and the 133p? I also bought a Canon regular 8 + bag accessories including a light meter and a dummy roll of Kodachrome 25 for less than $20!! I get since Kodachrome is useless in today’s world, I’m gonna keep it to test any new cameras when I get them. It’s gonna be an exciting summer this year!

      @Filmboy24  2 года назад

      Great idea to keep an old roll of Kodachrome for testing purposes! Congrats on your camera purchases. Be careful...it's addicting 🤣.
      The only difference between the 132P-XL and 133P-XL cameras is the lenses. Essentially, the model numbers simply describe the lenses. The 132 has an f/1.3, 2:1 Zoom lens, while the 133 has an f/1.3 3:1 zoom lens. That's the only difference. Have fun with it, they're great little grab and go cameras, if you get a good working one.

    • @Filmboy24
      @Filmboy24  3 года назад +1

      @@asaking5795, my pleasure!
      Your Back Light Compensation button essentially opens up your aperture about a stop, thus letting in a bit more light. Its original function was for scenes that were more lit from behind than in front and you would hold that button down while filming that scene.
      The Fade control simply opens and closes (slowly) your camera's aperture, which, in turn, fades your scene in from black or out to black. You have to hold it down while filming.
      I hope that helps.

      @@waterdrinker8554 Not a stupid question at all. With mine, I didn't find out until I processed my first roll of film shot in it. Everything was completely blown out.
      Your camera's meter is powered by the same 2 AA batteries that power the motor. With batteries in, you can look into the lens and shine a light at it. You can see the iris open and close as the light hits it. There is also a sideways triangle in the viewfinder (right side) that will come in and out of frame as the camera is pointed at light and dark. This won't necessarily tell you about the meter's accuracy, only that its responsive.
