Just one important tip. Never use "fabric" inside the shelter. Fabric will hold water/moisture/snow and the cats can freeze to death because of the cold blanket/fabric. Instead, always use straw. Straw is hollow and won't hold water or moisture, any snow will fall beneath the pile of straw and sublimate away. This is particularly important for shelters in very cold climates in winter. Straw will also hold the animal's heat much more efficiently than fabric but the important part is that it won't stay wet.
rofllol255 you’d still put the shiny insolation lining but all the tutorials from shelters say to use the straw in between the container and styrofoam. I believe the straw will also help keep things cooler in the summer.
My cat. I make her toys that smell like catnip, and guess what? All she wants is the string. I try making her beds and stuff but all she wants is to scratch cardboard. I think she would like the tree stump scratcher, because she already has one that's worn out.
Recently, a stray cat has been wondering into my backyard. Well, for about 7 months. At the beginning, I tried being friends with her and I knew it would take time. My family never wanted me to feed her, because they just didn't want a cat. I secretly brought her milk and bread. One day when my dad was cleaning the pool. The cat rubbed against his leg and my dad is very allergic to cats. He gave her a pet and fell in love! His allergies never reacted to her and he was fine. Now my whole family loves her and we just started letting her inside the house!! I've never had a cat, but I want to give this kitty a home :) that was my story. Read if you like!!
Such a nice haert warming story. Thanx for sharing. I think that half of the üeople who say they don't like cats wpuld convert onto cat lovers, if they only had to live a week with them. Cats are so convincing...if a cat is purring, I'd do anything for her/ him
If you want to make a stray cat shelter, but live somewhere that gets ice/snow, don't put fabric bedding inside. Instead, use straw or other loose material. If you've ever left a towel or shoes outside, you know why :P
It’s not that, your cats love the things that you get along with like your bag, play with your cats toy for some days and watch your cat get along. It’s just like the favorite ball that we have and play with, our cat will always go for that ball only
2:08 This is a petpeeve of mine .... In several of these diy videos people are cutting in middle.. MIDDLE OF THE FABRIC. Why not few mm away from the seam or Something?
As one of several scratching posts I keep around I made my own out of a piece of ash branch left over from tree trimming. Just attached it with screws to a piece of wood for the base and then secured the top end to the overhang of my kitchen island for added stability. It goes with the rustic decor of my kitchen and is easily and easily replaceable (I cut that branch into several pieces to keep) and plus it's kind of cool to see my indoor cat claw the heck out of an indoor "tree". Next I am thinking of making an indoor cat perch made from real tree branches.
That window tray cannot be safe. I get that it holds 15 pounds, but if that suction comes loose, the tray, cat, whatever comes with it, potentially breaking your window also.
Ahhhh my parents just surprised me with an adopted cat for an early Christmas present, while I was at my friends house they got her and all of the supplies from her, we named her Luna and she's so sweet!!!
Did the stray cat shelter during winter bc I know a certain stray that I feed. She had babies in the shelter (I made it bigger by adding some extensions) and she and her babies all have homes now. Most of them with me. Okay, fine, all of them.
Hi Patty, so that you don't end up with the original cat's grand-kitties and great-grand-kitties, etc, call your local animal shelter and your county's domestic animal services to find out if they offer low-cost spay and neutering for feral cats. I do TNR (Trap, Neuter [or spay], Return [to the person feeding the cat]). My local shelter charges only $35 for sterilization per cat which includes a one-year Rabies vaccination. The very tip of the cat's left ear is cut off while under anesthesia in order to identify that cat as having been sterilized. I live in Florida.
Made the Cat Tent from 3:10 for my cat Sox. I put a towel in the bottom as a comfort mat and sprinkled a little catnip over it and then put a small pile of food in the inside corner to make her feel welcome. She seemed a little sketched out at first, but I gently set her inside and now she loves it in there.
I have made the cat tent before and finally had to call it a disaster. My cats only got in it a couple of times and for all of 10 seconds. They mostly liked playing around it, jumping on it, and sitting on it; causing it to be squished and go flat.
I live in Michigan and have made many stray cat houses, some similar to what you showed. The problem with a blanket in cold weather is that it will retain moisture then freeze, maybe to the cat's fur. Use straw, not hay but STRAW, (around $4 per bale) straw does not hold moisture, hay does. Pack it full without compressing it too much and the cat will burrow in and make a warm nest. Straw is also good to pack between the two coolers as it is good insulation. I'm going to try a couple of your ideas, probably the scratching post first..
The ladder at the beginning needs a board attached to the top for support of kitty laying in the bed!!! 😕🐈💖💖....Other than that....I really like these!!! Especially shelter for strays!!! 😎🖒🖒🐈💖💖
Ok, I only got as far as the ladder one and have to call shenanigans. The ladder alone is like $50. Rope is also expensive. The cat bed is another $15 and that lamb's wool thing doesn't look cheap. The rug might be cheap if you live by an ikea. So all the materials would be over $100. Why DIY something if you could just go out and buy one (and not have to reglue your freaking elmers glue constantly...)?
HOLY SHIT. I did the first one with a larger stepladder for my 3 cats and they love it SO SO MUCH. My smaller cat, Dolly, likes the blanket hammock between the steps while my two larger cats, Frederick and Thomas, sleep in the bed above all the time. THANK YOU!!
Use straw instead of towels if you’re going to put the shelter outside and don’t plan on cleaning the towels every week :) towels hold water and the cold
All really good ideas, one thing though, don't put any fabric in an outdoor cat shelter. They will track in rain or snow & it will stay damp or wet all winter & cause respiratory illness. Put straw ( not hay), it will not hold water & is porous so it will hold body heat as well 💖👍
Benadryl. Or just be around cats awhile and you'll get over the allergy. Plus if you bathe them once in awhile it makes a huge difference. I dont bother with a tub bath, just a wet cloth with a little pet mousse, scruff their neck and wipe'em down does the trick. Its best to sneak up on them while they eat 😻🛁
Have these people ever even owned a cat? You can’t use nails for the first one because it’ll hurt their claws when they scratch, and cats like to stretch out when scratching so the stump thing won’t work. Those catnip biscuits aren’t really healthy either.
That first one had other issues too- what about the ladder hinges? Um, ouchie? And you should probably cover the top in padding (corners = ouchie too) just to be safe
Idk, my cats have a little cardboard scratcher on the floor that they love and they don't really stretch out on it. We do have a cat tree that they stretch up on to scratch, but I don't think it's a requirement. I think they just like the texture of the cardboard
There’s these two stray kitties I always see running around my neighborhood. Now that it’s cold, I’m definitely going to make the shelter and hopefully they can stay warm😭 There’s also other small critters that hang around, so hopefully the cats get to the shelter before they do
You'd really only make one for a specific cat, I imagine. Like there's a stray you've been feeding, but winter is coming and you want somewhere warm for her to stay. The cat's presence would keep other critters away. Ppl shouldn't just set one out, hoping some random cat will find it XD
My garbage bags are mint scented to ward off critters so I suppose mint essential oils could work possibly but I suppose a fox or stray dog could still move in
true but if there are 2 exits it won't be that warm, also as the others said as well, if there is a second opening other predators might come from behind.. and also yea.. the opening is too small.. maybe there could be a second opening where it won't be cut from the upper side so it can close a bit but in an emergency the cat t be able t get out
Wow some of them are really nice! I especially liked the tree bark scratcher, the food tray hanging thing and the tent made out of tee-shirt. The stray cat shelter is nice too, but instead of clothes, hay or straw should be used so that moisture isn't retained inside.
I really wish I had a kitten or cat. I really want one. You’d think by searching on my iPad I have a cat but I don’t. I already had the kitten that I wanted picked out (shelter cat), and I even have a whole online shopping cart with all my “kitten’s” necessities...PRAY FOR MEEEEEEEEE! Unless your non-religious or other reason 😊
i think my most favorite was the last one for stray cats. that was a really cool idea specially for during the winter months. it makes for a GRATE little hiding place for them AND there kittens. specially if there looking for a place to HAVE them. its small and comfy and WARM. maybe a bit snug but it will work non the less sill there 8 weeks old or so.
The only thing I’ve “made” for her that she actually gives a shit about is this: I found a random cardboard box, put all of her toys in it and she takes the toys out, plays with them, and then leaves them all over the floor
I watched this video 2 years ago when i had my first cat and told myself that im going to try this next week. 2 years later, im watching this again and told myself that im going to try this next week. Will edit this comment 2 years from now that im going to try this next week.
These are all great ideas. I can see how you could easily repurpose items I already have for most of these. I think my favorite is the Tree Stump and you can get cardboard free any time. Thanks
It's not fur that people are allergic to. It's the dander (skin and oils in the skin) that contain a protein that people are allergic to. The protein is also in the cat's saliva so they spread it every time they groom.
Safety tip re. the cat shelter. Make sure the styro is lined completely so that the cat can't eat it. (I know of a man whose dog died after eating the inner styro lining of his dog house.)
If you're going to make a stray cat shelter you should use straw not a blanket, that's what the humane society suggests. Don't use hay but straw is good
uh hi if you're making the cat shelter (or any house for cats) i have a protip for you: make two doors, the cat feels more safe if it has a back door to escape from if someone tries to attack it the cats will more likely use the shelter/house if it has two doors
I hope you’re joking about that... Some people build cat shelters for people who cannot have cats inside their homes (allergies, cat supplies like litter, etc.) and the cats can have some shelter from the cold.
For wetter colder climates, it would be better to use straw for bedding instead of any fabric bed. As once the bed got wet and cold it would freeze and not keep kitty warm. Straw would drain the moisture and act as insulation keeping kitty warm.
A lot of that seems like more work then is beneficial. Plus side, you reminded me cork boards are a thing I can make a semi enclosure for the litter box two sides and a base for the cat to clean his/her claws. My last cat would scratch the wall beside his litter box.
A stray cat shelter, if left outside, should have two openings so the cat can escape if danger approaches, such as a coyote or an unfriendly other cat.
That stray cat shelter warms my heart
Me Too!
Same! It's so cute😻
i cried thinking about all those stray cats
Same here, oml 😸👏🏻
Only thing about the cat shelter is that they didn't cover the edges of the outer plastic container, so the entrance might hurt the kitties!!
So, between the storage bin and the styrofoam box you should put straw as well?
rofllol255 you’d still put the shiny insolation lining but all the tutorials from shelters say to use the straw in between the container and styrofoam. I believe the straw will also help keep things cooler in the summer.
Little Blizzard ohhh ok, thank you!
In the southern states they tell us cedar shavings to help repel pest. Ours don't all die in the winter/ leave or sleep
Thank you!
I did the stray cat house DIY, and got a box full of raccoons instead
XD but at least your helping someone:)
The technical term is "Trash Panda".
free raccoon
Raccoons need love too
😅 you helped them
Who else has a cat that ignores all the fancy things their owner buys for them and only loves cardboard?
My cat
Cats are... simple creatures...
mine only likes those dangly toys at the store, a bunny-kick thing, and yarn. He doesnt even like treats
My cat. I make her toys that smell like catnip, and guess what? All she wants is the string. I try making her beds and stuff but all she wants is to scratch cardboard. I think she would like the tree stump scratcher, because she already has one that's worn out.
Omg me
The catnip biscuit was basically the equivalent of weed brownies
Lol Lord lol
Yup
Hahaha

Welten Bummlerin you are so right! They are very good companions!!
Wait what
Aww this is like my stray kitty’s
Tip: milk and bread is very unhealthy for kitties, stick with water and meat
The stray cat shelter melted my heart it was the cutest thing i’ve seen anyone do for cats ❤️❤️
i did the stray cat shelter for a class project last year! some of them even got homes :-)
omg that's so sweet
I wish I can do that too
marley michelle aww thx for helping them
Slender Miao At least you did it!
gonan cray that’s great!!😻

Ashes B Or hay,It's best for things like that.
comb rider Do not use hay. Never. Look it up.
comb rider hay can rot, get moldy and wet
Can't she just take the stray cat to some place we're others can adopt the cat so that way it has a better home/ food
comb rider Hay gets wet and holds moisture. Educate yourself and stop giving people such silly advice!
Finally a video for my best and only friend
My literal Life Lol that’s so relatable
Yaaaassss
Emma Willis right😂
I know damn well i can spend like $40 on one of those cat diys and my cat will still prefer to play with wrapping paper and a grocery bag
Alex Grizz SAMEE
Same, i buyed a 200$ cat tree and he still preffers a cardboard box (sorry for bad english)
It’s not that, your cats love the things that you get along with like your bag, play with your cats toy for some days and watch your cat get along. It’s just like the favorite ball that we have and play with, our cat will always go for that ball only
much like kids who often have more fun with the box the toy came in then the toy itself
Lol! So true!
This is adorable but I know my cats would still prefer a box
Same
Why wouldn't they boxes are awesome
Same
@@nemi7578 omg yasssss I like cardboard

Use the scrap fabric to stuff a pillow
PET peeve ;)
Niqchu thank youuuuuuuu
Window perch diy
*cAn hold up too 15pounds*
Me: well my cats too freaking fat
cierra rayne okay but same
I said the same thing! My cat is 22 lbs! lol
cierra rayne
Your cat: sees this comment “Gasp how could you”
My cats are only 8 and 9 pounds but they like to share perches :(
cierra rayne yup. My one cat is 22 lbs. my other cat would be fine at 11 lbs, but my chunker wouldn’t let her have it for herself.

That window tray cannot be safe. I get that it holds 15 pounds, but if that suction comes loose, the tray, cat, whatever comes with it, potentially breaking your window also.
How would that break your window? Windows arent made of paper right?
Exactly! Agree! Not the window one please. Doesn't look safe. If window breaks, kitty can fall or get cut.
i’m gonna use heavy-duty suction cups and drill in 5 eyes instead of 4. My cat is only like 4-5 lbs so it should be fine
@V Stormfeltwitch Tbh i just thought about hooks on the window frame, like when people hang potted plants.
Ahhhh my parents just surprised me with an adopted cat for an early Christmas present, while I was at my friends house they got her and all of the supplies from her, we named her Luna and she's so sweet!!!
Lucky!
My mum has a kitten named Luna and she is a buttmunch
Sarah tennant lol tf is a buttmunch
You had to make a fake account for attention?
THOSE CATS ARE SO CUTE!! my cat would love these

I have like 2 cats so uhm,
I don't have a cat...in fact I'm allergic to their fur...but I do love them, and that's why I always scavenge RUclips for videos like this...
I read this comment and in my head I was like “I have a cat tho...”
I like the way on how you appreciate stray cats ❤️🙂
I have made the cat tent before and finally had to call it a disaster. My cats only got in it a couple of times and for all of 10 seconds. They mostly liked playing around it, jumping on it, and sitting on it; causing it to be squished and go flat.
Tiffani Erickson as cats will do, of course
I have a young indoor cat and I am always trying to change up things he can do. Love these ideas. Making it myself doesn't make me broke.
One time I went to the dollar store to buy wire coat hangers so I could make the cat tent, and I found an already made cat tent for $3.
Suchnothing but you missed out on the fun of making it
I live in Michigan and have made many stray cat houses, some similar to what you showed. The ladder at the beginning needs a board attached to the top for support of kitty laying in the bed!!! 😕🐈💖💖....Other than that....I really like these!!! Especially shelter for strays!!! 😎🖒🖒🐈💖💖
The stray cat shelter made me so happy
I want to make this but it takes too much :c
The shelter for stray cat's is the best cat diy I ever saw. 😻😻😻

It’s so kind how they made a shelter for strays😍
I loved the stray cat shelter the most
HOLY SHIT. I did the first one with a larger stepladder for my 3 cats and they love it SO SO MUCH. My smaller cat, Dolly, likes the blanket hammock between the steps while my two larger cats, Frederick and Thomas, sleep in the bed above all the time. THANK YOU!!
After watching her make the cat tent i wanted a tent on my bed to sleep in.
Use straw instead of towels if you’re going to put the shelter outside and don’t plan on cleaning the towels every week :) towels hold water and the cold
Stray cat shelters usually need entry and exit points in the event something else wants to get in. Nicely insulated though.
All really good ideas, one thing though, don't put any fabric in an outdoor cat shelter. They will track in rain or snow & it will stay damp or wet all winter & cause respiratory illness. Put straw ( not hay), it will not hold water & is porous so it will hold body heat as well 💖👍
when you are allergic to cats but still watch
EXACTLY!
Jezz how is this connects? u allergic to their smell not to their appearance
I am allergic but I have 6 cats! Nothing can stop me from my love to cats!😂😂
That's why u get a hairless one like I did 😂
The stray cat shelter was an adorable addition!
Have these people ever even owned a cat? You can’t use nails for the first one because it’ll hurt their claws when they scratch, and cats like to stretch out when scratching so the stump thing won’t work. Those catnip biscuits aren’t really healthy either.

Now that it’s cold, I’m definitely going to make the shelter and hopefully they can stay warm😭 There’s also other small critters that hang around, so hopefully the cats get to the shelter before they do
Ugh *PLEASE DONT* make the cat treats, my cats hated them and I got them to eat a tiny piece which she then proceeded to throw up
yikes•jpg my cats didn't even eat them lol (one nibbled it then spat it out the other two just sniffed and stared at it)
Glad you said this. Was thinking about making them
@@kimberlyperkins2992 try using chicken broth in it or something, it'd make it more appealing to them.
The stray cat shelter warmed my heart😭❤️
That stray cat shelter is great and all but what's stopping other unwanted woodland creatures (like skunks, ew) from moving in?
You'd really only make one for a specific cat, I imagine. Like there's a stray you've been feeding, but winter is coming and you want somewhere warm for her to stay. The cat's presence would keep other critters away. Ppl shouldn't just set one out, hoping some random cat will find it XD
My garbage bags are mint scented to ward off critters so I suppose mint essential oils could work possibly but I suppose a fox or stray dog could still move in
Cute cat planters. I would avoid the toxic (to pets) rubber plants they used if you have cats.
cats hate the smell of minty things too.
stray cat and a skunk aren't that much different lol
i adore the stray cat shelter idea
The stray cat shelter NEEDS TWO exits! If a predator gets in with the cat it needs an exit
What?
it makes it more likely for a feral cat to use it if there's more than one exit.
And straw instead of fabric to keep the cat warmer and dryer
it doesn't matter what makes sense to us. Cats get freaked out by it. They don't like feeling cornered.
true but if there are 2 exits it won't be that warm, also as the others said as well, if there is a second opening other predators might come from behind.. and also yea.. the opening is too small.. maybe there could be a second opening where it won't be cut from the upper side so it can close a bit but in an emergency the cat t be able t get out
That log thing is clever! And the stray cat shelter is awesome!!! I would suggest straw instead of a blanket because of wet feet 👍
Yes straw is so so so much better
YOOOOOOO 4:03 IS EXACLY LIKE MY CAT EVEN THE COLLAR!!!!
Wow some of them are really nice! I especially liked the tree bark scratcher, the food tray hanging thing and the tent made out of tee-shirt. The stray cat shelter is nice too, but instead of clothes, hay or straw should be used so that moisture isn't retained inside.

People with anger management issues find it hard to resist the impulse to act out when they are angry.
I’m only watching this because on the 16th of December 2018 and I’m really excited. Less than 2 weeks!!
My cat would ignore all of these
The only thing I’ve “made” for her that she actually gives a shit about is this:
I found a random cardboard box, put all of her toys in it and she takes the toys out, plays with them, and then leaves them all over the floor
Awe. The strey cat one got me all warm insideee they insulated it and everything!
Most of these hammock’s won’t hold my chubby cats. 😂😭
whoever is willing to donate this much time to their cats is s true crazy cat lady

Also if you want you can try the stray shelter thingy! You don't have to try it if you don't have to :-)
Blankets (in cold climates) will not help. You should use hay or straw in those cases, as air is an insulator and would be just as comfy
This is PAWsome!!!😏😏😹😹😺
Grazielle Jie T that’s my cats name haha

Who doesn’t have a cat?? (I’m allergic)
TheEverythingShow
Me, can't get them cause my sisters are scared of em, that and I won't even know how to take care of a cat...
Yeah... I’d probably leave the door open one day and it would run out😓
You can always get a Sphinx cat. They don't have any fur.
Sphinx cats scare me🙂
It's not fur that people are allergic to.
My cats are too fat for most of these
emily sounds like you need to put them on a diet
If you're going to make a stray cat shelter you should use straw not a blanket, that's what the humane society suggests. Don't use hay but straw is good
time to make these for my dog
I was just trying to come up with an idea for this stray cat in my yard. I will be building that little shelter for it! Thanks for a fantastic video!!
really??? elmers glue!?!?!?
rachel may That's wood glue, I only know because I use it constantly when building things
That stray cat shelter was an amazing idea!

uh hi if you're making the cat shelter (or any house for cats) i have a protip for you: make two doors, the cat feels more safe if it has a back door to escape from if someone tries to attack it
the cats will more likely use the shelter/house if it has two doors

In areas where it has wetter seasons, straw is a warm alternative to the fabric in a stray cat shelter. It stays drier.
haha first comment
sfal are you sure about that?
Nope. Wrong.
Adorable, specially the shelter. I’m going to ‘copy’ your idea. 🙏🏻
The last one is for hobos who want a free cat
I hope you’re joking about that... Some people build cat shelters for people who cannot have cats inside their homes (allergies, cat supplies like litter, etc.) and the cats can have some shelter from the cold.
I wish I was more crafty, because these are adorable!
I'm only tempted to make the tent.....can't go wrong there and my cat would so 💜 it
Omg luv luv luv the cat tent and hammock ideas!!! Def gonna try tfp!! 👍👍
Those stray cat shelters are so smart!
#1 Box #2 Sofa #3 Box #4 Plant pot #5 Box #6 Window sill #7 Sofa #8 Anywhere other than that box.
A stray cat shelter, if left outside, should have two openings so the cat can escape if danger approaches, such as a coyote or an unfriendly other cat.
My wittle bitty kitty is a cross between Siamese and Bombay cat mix and she’s adorable
