Geezer Butler (the most under rated bassists of all time) was the primary lyricist, Ozzy mostly came up with the vocal melodies.

Exactly. Lots of people, reactors included, assume that the vocalist is always the lyricist. Another incorrect assumption is that all lyrics are autobiographical.

It went like this, They would get to gether for a jam. Toni would come up with a riff, Bill would provide the driving force Gezzer with the bass, and Ozzy would sing any rubbish. But what all the band menbers all say, Ozzy was'nt given enough credit. He would come up with these incredible melody lines. Geezer would change the lyrics, but maybe use one word or a line Ozzy sang. But the 1st melody lines Ozzy sang were always what the band went with. In which world is Geezer underrated?

As much as I love Geezer's bass and Tony's riffs in this song, the part that stands out most to me is Bill's drumming. If you're wearing headphones, you can hear it pan from ear to ear during the song.

Symptom of the universe is very overrated, there's 40 hit songs off the first 5 albums without having to dive into that weak album. National Acrobat is my favorite sick Iommi riff, sick AF .
Sabbath was always a bunch of hippies playing the blues, all their songs were about peace and love. They were leaving a horror movie theatre and saw all the people, and Iommi was like 'all these people paid money to be scared, let's scare people.'
Geezer was into reading about the occult.
From what I understand from interviews I've read, bassist Geezer Butler wrote most of the lyrics during the Ozzy era.

Geezer (bass) was primary lyricist. Ozzy threw a few bits in here and there (according to Iommi's biography) Iommi's easily one of the most influential guitarists of all time and the only member to be on every Sabbath album.
I just wanna highlight Bill Ward's amazing drumming in this song (every song lol), those extra roto toms add richness to the sound. Bill Ward goes under-recognized in conversations of greatest drummers in history, a lot of people talk about John Bonham (deservedly so), but I think Bill Ward is better than him. That might be a controversial statement, sorry not sorry lol 😝. 🤘🤘🤙🤙

Bill Ward really was a great drummer and doesn't get the credit that Bonham, Peart or Moon get. Bill and Geezer Butler was an amazing rhythm section.

You commented on Bill Ward's drumming... it's always superb... one of the most underrated drummers of all time. Check out WAR PIGS live in Paris 1970... he's hitting those drums like they owe him a LOTTA money... it's a wonder the drums survived.

This was from the third album in 1971, Master of Reality. Music by the great Tony Iommi (eye-OWE-me), who invented metal, and lyrics by the great bass player, Geezer Butler, who wrote all of the lyrics during the Ozzy era.

My favorite Black Sabbath album with Ozzy is ''Sabotage'' the whole album keeps you interested and cool riffs everywhere, maybe some of their best songs are in it. I Recommend ''Megalomania'', ''The Thrill of it All'', and ''The Writ''

Sabbath singers...First Ozzy...then Dio...Ian Gillan(more famously known for singing for Deep Purple) for one album...Ray Gillan, Tony Martin...there were some singers who were temporarily with band but did not record on any albums...Ozzy and Dio had reunited with bands several times. The last time Dio reunited with band they went under another band name Heaven and Hell( title of first Sabbath album with Dio) just prior to Dio's death.

From wikipedia, On his last day of work in a sheet metal factory, as a teenager, Iommi lost the tips of the middle and ring fingers of his right hand in an accident, an event which crucially impacted his playing style. He briefly left Black Sabbath (then known as Earth) in 1968 to join Jethro Tull, but did not record any material with the band, and subsequently returned to Black Sabbath in 1969. In 2000, he released his first solo album Iommi, followed by 2005's Fused, which featured his former bandmate Glenn Hughes. After releasing Fused, he formed Heaven & Hell, which disbanded after the death of Ronnie James Dio in 2010.
I watched a documentary about a run down housing estate in Wales with a big drug problem. They used this as the background music. I couldn’t get the riff out of my head.
Children Of The Grave is from Sabbath's third album "Master Of Reality", released in 1971.
Geezer Butler wrote the lyrics, he's the bassist. Ozzy sometimes created the vocal melody, but his contribution is mainly his unique vocal tone. Sometimes despairing, sometimes distressed, sometimes demonic.

As for the guitar distortion sound, that was not on purpose. Tony lost 2 tips of his fingers and loosened the guitar strings to be able to play. The distortion came from that. It was never intentional.

Third album, Master of Reality, was 1971. The first 2 albums were released in 1970.
When I was a kid no more tears was new and I was witching it on MTV (yes I'm old) and I said to my brother this guy is ripping off black sabbaths voice lol. He smacked the back of my head and called me a dumb ass it's the same guy. And yes smokey has a point. I started following the lyrics with some rap and I have to say a lot of rap songs lyrics are masterpieces. No all songs...... but a fair amount that I've listened to.
I mean I was in high school when No More Tears came out… and I’m not old 😩😆 Saw him back then on his No More Tours tour… which turned out to not be true haha. Thirty years ago he said he was done touring! And now he’s 470 years old like they said 😆

I believe metal heads generally get a bad rep as evil devil worshipers etc. It may be true- but we’re also nerds, gamers, outcasts and all walks of life that bond over our love for heavy music. I was born in 85 so I missed witnessing the heyday of Sabbath and Blizzard in person. Ozzy was my second music obsession after my love affair with Def Leppard was over. When I was 7, I "borrowed" my uncles copy of Tribute, put on the cans, and had my mind blown! I have been defending Ozzy's good name when it came to his music since that day. Keep slaying it Fellas, Horns up! \m/
Ozzy has long been known to his fans to be an extremely sweet guy. In the earlier years society went by perception and never bothered to listen to the words. Unfortunately not alot has changed.

Iommie’s guitar tone actually involves much less gain/distortion than you think.
The story I heard was that Who drummer Keith Moon created the appellation”Heavy Metal” when he said that Led Zeppelin’s music sounded “like heavy metal falling from the sky.”
The term "heavy metal" dates back at least as far as BORN TO BE WILD by Steppenwolf "I like smoke and lightening and heavy metal thunder"
When Zep was The New Yarbirds Moon said their sound sounded like a lead balloon and that's where Led Zeppelin came from.

The lyrics are from the bassist, Geezer Butler, not from Ozzy. However, the way Ozzy interprets them with his iconic voice!!
I saw Black Sabbath in 1978 in San Diego when Van Halen opened, and then again in 2013 at Tinley Park, Illinois. Unbelievable!!

Chunky. Smoking. Sludge. I mean that in the best way, lol! Lit the F up riff, AND enlightened lyrics--I was glad to see you guys picked up on the nature of the message here! I'm 57, so I can speak to what it was like to "live in the shadow of atomic fear," as Ozzy sings. Everyone sort of accepted IT could come at any second, but we sort of numbed ourselves to it. Now many think it is a Thing of the Past, but I hope ALL leaders keep in mind: In wartime, Mr. Escalation ALWAYS flirts with Miss Calculation.
Someone else has said it, but Geezer Butler on bass was the lyricist, Ozzy just came up with some melodies. Geezer did approach his lyrics from a good place like you said, his lyrics are great.

Parents had me @ 3 yo recorded on a cassette saying "LOUD" as this song began, on a record player!. Wish I still had it, Joan Jett's Crimson Clover was the next song (also my fave then). I wasn't talking well & sounded like a Lil alien! 🤪😂

There was an interview with Ozzy where he said him and Tony Iommi were listening to Led Zeppelin. Ozzy looked Iommi and said we're gonna do that but harder louder and faster.
Ozzy only wrote a few Sabbath lyrics, he mainly created the melody line. Ozzy would sing gibberish and word phrasings over Tony's guitar riffs. Geezer Butler would then take Ozzy's melody and add words for Ozzy to sing.

Are there any Black Sabbath songs that Ozzy wrote the lyrics.
Geezer Butler wrote about 90% of the lyrics to all black sabbath songs with Ozzy. That being said off the top of my head I know that (surprise surprise) the synthesizer driven “who are you” is an Ozzy creation as is the synthesizer driven “am I going insane” from sabotage. I know Ozzy and Geezer wrote the lyrics to fairies wear boots together when they were high. Ozzy never wrote any other lyrics as far as I know. Who wrote the music? That’s easy; Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler and Bill Ward.
The only song Ozzy can truly call his own while in Black Sabbath is Changes from Vol. 4. Ozzy wrote the songs, wrote the lyrics and played the piano. Is the only song he did this whole with Black Sabbath.
Children of the Grave (song)
The song is about the threat of a nuclear war and that the youth needs to stand against the corrupt politicians and just spread peace and love, or the wars will put an end to the human race.
White Zombie has covered the song for the cover album Nativity In Black.
Tarot has also covered the song for their album "To Live Forever".
The song has appeared on Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock as a playable song.
The title of the song is referenced in League of Legends as the name of an ultimate attack of the character Mordekaiser.
It's also used as the background music of the opening level of Brütal Legend.
