Ronnie James Dio was never a guitarist, though he did indeed compose on guitar. He was, however, originally a bassist, and a very good one. On the eponymous debut album of his first hard rock band Elf, released in 1972, Ronnie was both a singer and a bassist. After that the band was augmented with a young jazz virtuoso named Craig Gruber (RIP) on bass, who later followed Ronnie to Rainbow and was even a contender to replace Geezer Butler in Black Sabbath in 1979, when Geezer very nearly retired permanently from the band. Ronnie's very first instrument as a child, however, was the trumpet, which would explain his amazing lung capacity! Jimi Jamison (RIP) of Survivor fame had the same background, and also lost very little of his vocal capacity before his untimely passing in 2014.
Another fun fact: before Ronnie joined Black Sabbath, he was actually approached by Sweet to replace Brian Connolly (RIP). Now THAT would have been a bizarre lineup. (If anybody's interested, after Ronnie picked Black Sabbath over them, Sweet dedided to move forward with only their three remaining members.)

Another great song off this album is "Neon Knights". It's a nice and fast jam. Tony Iommi mentioned in an interview (not that long ago) that his favorite solo to play is from "Neon Knights". And Dio is in top form as well.
    Great vid as usual, guys!

I think that Geezer stands out more when playing with Dio. Dio's voice allows Iommi to go harder with solos and play more dynamically, which gives Geezer more room at the bottom of the sound to show off. 'Master of Insanity' off of Dehumanizer really stands out as a Geezer showpiece.

  • @metalguru85

They released a compilation album, "Black Sabbath: The Dio Years" and a studio album, "The Devil You Know" with a really heavy sound. Later same year (2009) Dio was diagnosed with stomach cancer, and less than a year later he passed. I was devestated when it happened, I love Dio! Dio rejoined Black Sabbath in 2006 but they went out on tour under the title of "Heaven and Hell" for legal reasons. That lasted until Dio's death in 2010. There's concert footage from their Wacken headline show in 2009 where they did a 17 minute live version of this song. It's not easy to find but if you can find it..... it's 17 minutes of beauty and genius.
Many of the comments here will fill you in on more Dio and Ozzy tracks to do but I'd like to suggest 2 Sabbath tracks with neither Dio or Ozzy.
"Zero the hero" with Ian Gillan on vocals and "Nightwing" with Tony Martin on vocals.
Yes all the original 4 members played an important part in the band but Tony Iommi is regarded as the driving force behind the band. Many people say "Iommi is Sabbath, Sabbath is Iommi". As a Sabbath fan for over 40 years I find it very difficult to argue with that statement 😎

You should definitely check out the latter Dio era Sabbath stuff when they went by heaven and hell (band name) the song Bible Black is a great song and sadly one of Dio's final songs recorded before his death. Great song and show Dio was a god all the way to the end. Definitely worth checking out. RIP RJD 🤘

It was the first album that went platinum for Sabbath since 1973. Fans dug it and Ozzy's record. It worked out well for both.

Dio came back to Black Sabbath under the band name Heaven & Hell (different name for legal issues) in 2007 through 2009 before Dio passed in 2010. Check out their song "Bible Black", great song from a bunch of 60 year olds. That's going to be the closest you get to a reunion with Dio and the Black Sabbath. The 2009 Wacken concert has some great footage of the song "Bible Black", "I", "Falling Off The Edge Of The World", "Die Young", "Children of the Sea" and "Sign of the Southern Cross".

In this constellation B.S. sadly made only two studio albums.
Years later they reunited with an other drummer under the name "Heaven and Hell", because Ozzy's wife Sharon did not allow to publish it as Black Sabbath. They made one studio recording and one live album at Wacken.
    And I was there !!! 🤘🥰

The opening riff is possibly one of the most iconic in the history of metal. You know what's also iconic?.... Rivers of Nihil and Polyphia! Rivers of Nihil released Where Owls Know My Name and it quickly got a lot of attention. And Polyphia is well... Polyphia. Come on, guys. Go react to Rivers of Nihil - Where Owls Know My Name (official video) and Polyphia - Goat (official video). Please please please do both songs. You'll regret not doing them earlier. I'm serious.

I was fortunate enough to see them perform this live in 1980 or ‘81 (I forget!) during the “Black & Blue” tour with Blue Oyster Cult, I couldn’t hear properly for 3 days after the concert.

I saw Black Sabbath when they reunited in I think 2000??? This was at an Ozzfest. I was about 13 or so. I'm pretty sure Marilyn Manson played right before. But in any case... It was pretty awesome and I was witnessing something special. Seeing Ozzy perform live is absolutely bonkers. I've seen him 4 times. He's a legend and it's so upsetting that his health is declining.

You don't know who Boris Karloff were, guys? Forshame :-) He is the actor best known as the iconic Frankenstein's monster himself.
And yes, Dave Walker did indeed replace Ozzy, briefly in 1977. Ozzy was however reinstated shortly afterwards, to be more permanently fired in 1979 and replaced by, in turn, Ronnie James Dio, Ian Gillan, Dave Donato (no album), Glenn Hughes, Ray Gillen (no album), Tony Martin, Ronnie James Dio again, Tony Martin again, and finally returning to the band in 1997 and remaining until its final disbandment in 2017. Whew, right?
I strongly recommend you check out every lineup listed above, since they're all brilliant in their very own, significative way. You're doing a great job, by the way. Your enthusiasm and instinctive astuteness serve you well in your studies at the school of hard riffs :-D

Guys when Dio was alive after Ozzy came back if you got tickets to a show and the band was heaven and hell that was Sabbath with Dio and if it was Black Sabbath it was Ozzy singing they were both singing and the band name changed depending on who it was. Peace from Stan the Alaskan.

Your curiosity about the classic artists and wanting to know more about them is cool to watch.

I saw Ozzy right after Randy died, months later, but the tickets were still good. Anyway, it was funny, Ozzy "hung" a monk, a midget in monk's clothes, which was supposed to be Dio.The guitarist at this concert was Brad Gillis of Night Ranger. It was a good concert.
