  • Do you still have a stash of VHS Video tapes cluttering the place up? Do you never have time to watch them or you simply cannot watch them because your new TV does not support the out of date SCART socket?
If that's a Yes, then there is a good chance you will want to preserve those recordings and the best way to do that is convert the VHS Tapes to Digital...
In this Video, I will show you the easiest way to convert your VHS Video tapes to digital format. Once converted to a mkv/mp4 file, you can play them back via PC/Laptop or even your TV if it has a USB Slot which can play movie files.
I will cover the hardware aspects, such as SCART to HDMI converter, Video Capture Card and also the Software used to record your VHS tapes and save them to your PC/Laptop
To save you the hassle, I've tested a couple of SCART to HDMI Converters and also Video Capture cards and settled on the following reliable setup:

Many thanks for this. I managed to purchase the Scart to HDMI converter and the HDMI Video Capture units for £22-00p from Amazon and thanks to your advice and guidance through the OBS Studio program now have my personal VHS Video tapes all backed up on my computer. If I had paid someone to convert them for me they would have charged £14-00 per tape. By my reckoning this has saved me £258-00 so far !! Once again many thanks, your guidance was spot on.

The Scart to HDMI converter cannot do SD or interlaced out, Elgato and OBS cannot do interlaced.

Hi, fantastic video! I’m in the process of trying multiple methods of digitizing the hundred or VHS tapes in my family’s collection. I’ve tried using AV to HDMI upscaling and recording with an external capture device to a jump drive, i’ve used the Elgato “dongle” made specifically for digitizing VHS tapes and the Clear Click video to digital converter 3.0 and preparing to try your method shortly. Before doing so, do you feel there would be any noticeable difference between using a Scart to HDMI vs a similar device that uses Composite cables to HDMI? I thought I would ask before searching for this converter. Any help would be greatly appreciated 🙏🏼

Hi, Scart will always be better than Composite when going to HDMI. The method in the video is probably the best within budget solution for achieving the best resolution to digital. Do let us know how you get on

Do you still need the Il Gato capture card if your computer already has an HDMI port?

Yes you do, the HDMI port is just where the cable plugs into. It's the Elgato capture card that is the brains of the operation

On the flip side, you don't necessarily store movies on computer, most people store then on USB connected storage and keep backups for added security. While VHS degrade over time, digital content does not. But either way, its commendable that you are rocking the VHS flag
