Buying Gold Coins for Profit

  • Well, that's the plan anyway. Buying certain gold coins have an upside others simply do not. It's possible to hit some big wins with collectible gold coins if you're willing to take a bit of risk or just buy what you might otherwise pass on. Like anything, hoping for future numismatic value is a gamble, but in certain cases the risk isn't that crazy. Some gold coins with potential collectible value are released for premium similar to basic coins like American Gold Eagles or Gold Buffalos. So the downside risk is right around the spot price of gold. The upside is the interesting part.

    I rolled the dice on 4 of the 2023 High Relief. Will grade them myself and if they pass muster (SP 70) I will send them in. If not, I'll keep the best one and send the rest back (no questions asked 7 day return). Did the same with 2016 Gold Centennial Quarters and Half Dollar (bought 24 total). End result after selling? The profits paid for a bunch of SP 70 Quarters and a single SP-70 Half. Free gold ;-) Key is obviously knowing what to look for under a 4x and 10x glass. Of those 24 Gold Centennials I purchased 22 were sent in. Two were a little funky and I sold those privately for a small profit. 19 of the 22 I sent in came back SP 70 and the other 3 were SP 69.

    Ebay is a terrible place to sell these days. The fees are massive, holding your funds for a month after a sale even if the buyers recieves the item and gives you positive feedback. Taxes are BS. In Canada, we dont pay taxes on 99% silver and gold but on ebay, they take the taxes anyway. Ill never sell on there again unless it's worth less than $1000 US and im desperate. Many long time silver/gold sellers, including stores are choked at ebay because sales are drying up. No one wants to buy or sell on there anymore

    • @2is1gold
      @2is1gold  11 месяцев назад

      Yeah, I'm not a fan. It's funny to me that the prices of auctions there are used as the accepted value of a coin, though. People reference listings all the time.

      True. The reason prices are so much higher on ebay is because of the heavy fees and taxes. People have to price items higher so they don't lose money on whatever it is they are selling. If you dare to want a profit, the price is unreasonably high.

    Low mintage is one aspect, average mintage quality and grade is another. Of the mintage how many or what percentage grade out. Also what is the market. What I have found success with is to by based on your experience which is a gamble. The safer bet is buy graded and search for the deals, like chasing the years that are just starting to rise.

Well for one, we cant spend gold on gas, house, bills etc. Two, whats the point of having it if you never want to get its worth at a later point in time after some appreciation? I understand holding, which i intend to do and hopefully pass to my son. But it is also there for a stash i wont recklessly spend unless truly needed.

    As many have previously said, bullion is insurance and a hedge; collectables are investment. A notable economist once said, "more is better," but that also depends on the utility you get from adding "more". I also saw the U.S. Mint released some more Bristlecones this morning. Regardless, if one's utility for an additional Bristlecone outweighs the opportunity cost associated with its acquisition over a 1oz gold eagle or buffalo, ... there's no correct decision - it's just personal. 😎

    In a movie awhile back I heard the phrase “…a shoebox full of Krugerrands.” It was a throwaway in a conversation between minor characters, but it stuck like an ear worm, and though my preference is American and Canadian, and my shoebox is plastic, that’s sort of my goal (this time around).
    Over the years I’ve been deeply involved in narrow esoteric markets, professionally and as avocations, and have usually done OK or better, but the depth of research, the complex logistics, the risk itself, create so much work, and “work” is what I retired to avoid.
    So for now I’ll keep it simple.

    Give it time. The banks are manipulating the price to accumulate. Then the price will increase, IMHO. Remember Jamie Diamond of JP Morgan Chase said they expect the price to reach $2,175. When he said that, I bought $1850 Puts to hedge against my physical gold. I have paid attention to every time he or some other high tanking financier says something like that, and the price of whatever market they mention goes the opposite way. It's their way of getting more volume to dump on...
