  • Just How Good Were the Good Ol' Days? To find out, we've gathered three modern high-spec ponycars and matched them with their glory days ancestors. We're pitting a 2011 Camaro SS against the '69 Camaro SS396 that inspired its design; a 2011 Challenger SRT8 meets the '70 Challenger it so faithfully resembles; and a freshly minted Shelby Mustang GT500 convertible meets its '69 forebear.

    As much of a fan of Dodge that I am, I've got nothing but love for the mustang and camaro. What other 3 manufacturers on earth can give you 400 HP and bone crunching torque for less than 40k? Not to mention the looks and style of these cars.

      There needs to be more people like you in the automobile world. I'm a die hard Ford guy, also love trucks so I drive an F-150, but I'm sick and tired of constantly reading comments from fanboys who rip on anything that isn't their go too. Chevy, Dodge and Ford all make and have made beautiful trucks and cars.

    I always get sad when I think about Pontiac, olds and Plymouth. gm and Chrysler axed then all as soon as these muscle cars were making a return to glory, imagine reimagined firebird, road runner and 442, they'd be amazing.

      These companies had a better performance line up than their parent companies. Plymouth had the cuda, Pontiac had the trans am, Mercury had the cougar.

    I prefer older to modern, The reason is if a classic broke down on you it's just a matter of pulling it to the garage and finding the problem fixing it and your off again.
    With the modern equivalent you would need to get it to a mechanic and pay them a ridiculous amount of money just to look at it.

      that and modern day car engine bays are so compact than a classic. with a classic car i can probably fit all the way in the engine bay and have someone close the hood. and im 5foot 2 inches!

    The new gen muscle gives the same feeling for a generation that didn't experience the 60's and 70's muscle car culture first hand. Both are worthy of dream car status for the generations they represent.

    Those old cars are cool. Forty years from now the new cars will be cool in comparison to whatever anti-gravity warp-speed hovercraft pieces of crap that they will be selling in 2055.

    that SS396 was beautiful, and you absolutely cannot beat the sound of solid lifter cam's, and the look of shaker hood scoops.... no matter how much faster a new car might be, the old ones have personality.

    one of my pet peeves: Plastic covers meant to dress up the engine (usually covering up the entire engine) such as the one on the new Camaro.
    I understand why they would do that in cars like minivans, family sedans and compacts where drivers may be intimidated by all the complex systems when simply checking the oil level, but in cars like THESE?!

      Agreed. First thing I do whenever I get any new car is take off the plastic engine covering. I see no reason why whenever I open my hood I should see a huge black plastic slab with the manufacturers name on it

      Frandy Hernandez 2 seconds is huge as time to distance is always closer than time to speed. About 400 feet difference in the quarter.

    Of course the newer cars are going to perform better; they've got a 30 year technology edge. But there is one area where the new cars are always going to come in second place, and that's style points. The old ones are always going to be cooler...they will always have more cache.

      zyrgle No style? Are you high? Even though I grew-up in the '60's & '70's, and I LOVE those old muscle cars, I think my 2014 Dodge Challenger R/T is absolutely gorgeous...and many others agree.

      Ok, so some new cars have a LITTLE style... but can we agree that the new Camaro is just butt-ugly?

      zyrgle I love the late 60's to early/mid 70's Corvettes. My first car was a '71 Firebird. I wish I still had it!
      I have mixed feelings about the new Camaros. I think they look good from the side & back, but look bad from the front. And I'm not a fan of the huge 20+ inch wheels. My Challenger came with 18's, which I think looks better. Muscle cars should have big fat tires, not rubber-band tires.

    I just recently sold my 1969 GTX with a 440 for financial reasons and I must say whenever I pulled up beside any of these modern muscle cars It's them that are staring and giving the thumbs up. As for the comparing of the era's, it just doesn't seem right. That's equal to comparing a ford flathead v8 to my GTX.....back in 69 muscle cars were way more affordable to the ones of today, even if you figure in what the dollar was worth back then. and those cars only needed a set of headers and better tires and a little tuning to get most of them into the mid 12's.....to each his own though.

    The old cars are always better to me because of the style and better protection mad out of real metal not recycle coke cans my cousin had a 2013 mustang I leaned on the door it dented it and I leaned on my friends old mustang it didn't even dent and actually my arm hurt after a while on leaning on it

      Exactly the point. With all that hard stiff metal the energy is transferred right into your body which will give you more severe injuries at low speeds. Newer Cars crumble to distribute the force and energy of a impact throughout the car and its frame so you can walk away. It isn't my opinion, its a true fact.

      I love the old cars, they style, the brashness, awesome... However, if you think those big steal tanks offered more protection, your seriously delusional. Read up on kinetic energy transfer and acceleration principles, and that's not even considering collapsing steering columns, 8+ airbags.

    I have owned: 70 mach 1 mustang with a 351C and top loader 4 speed, 84 mercury capri with swapped sorta built 351W and 5 speed, 94 mustang gt(current, mild mods) and last year bought a new '13 charger r/t/awd. The charger is the fastest(that capri would smoke it off the line but I never went over 110mph because of safety concerns like no abs and the speedo was already wrapped back around) as it is simply tuned with new tech and feels safe enough and has enough power to exceed the top speeds of the older ones. The 94gt is almost as quick to 60 now that i have changed rear end gears, but lacks the power to keep up after that. it is still immense fun to drive, though I almost cant compare it to the new charger, the driving feel is so different. Going back farther, that 70 mustang, that car was a blast. quick, but in reality compare to the others not as quick. It's just the feeling, the engine power is just RAW compared to anything new. Responsive to say the least, and you are in control. Sure my new charger is more powerful and quicker, but I know in the end the car is doing the control through my inputs- as in, I stomp a gas pedal, and the computer decides to make the car go fast, but not so much as to break the tires loose or whatever else it decides is too unsafe. I love my charger, but in the end, the Capri and the old 70 mach were hands down winner if i had to choose a car "just to go romp around in". My 94gt is a close 3rd, maybe once I do some drivetrain work it will take the top spot. That Capri will be hard to beat though(sold it because wife was too scared of it to ride with me lol) if you have never been, a early 80's fox body swapped with a 351(not some tweaked out stroker 302) in a streetable form is about the most fun you can have in a car on the cheap. There is a reason Ford did not put a 351 into those cars(fears of insurance, likely deals with GM to not make chevy boys cry) In the end, comparisons of new to old fall flat because of the drivers feel the older ones can do and the new ones just dont even try to create.

    I loved the old challengers! Old cars are still my favorite. But that is one reason I like new dodge challengers

    I think the camaro and the challenger sounded the sweetest. I was expecting a little bit more bark from the Shelby.
    I still do not like the interior in the new challenger. plus it weights in at 4450 or something like that, and the old 68 charger i had only weighted 3850

      Challenger interior is not new. Same as it has been, basically since 2008. Next year, 2015, is a new model with new engines, etc.

    See, you can get technical with specs and whatnot, but you can't get technical with the feel that classic cars stimulate. Put it this way. Tomorrow, some kid's gonna get into their mom's/dad's charger rt, and it's gonna feel like they're blazing through the street in a god-like chariot, feel me? They're going to grow this love/nostalgia for the car. This will become their classic. Time will progress. That car will evolve. It'll get meaner, but the kid, now an adult will still have love for his parents' 2016 charger or whatever. I sorta lost the point I was trying to make haha. Anyways! For us, it's the ones that started it all. I'm 20. I'm not /that/ old, but I did grow up in a household concentrated around classic American muscle, because it's what my father loved. From the '69 charger rt to the '69 mercury. '55 bel airs and all. Growing up around those machines is something I just can't let go of. Me, personally, I love trucks. I see modern 2016 1500 chevy's and 1500 rams drive on by. These things look great. I won't lie. I'd love to drive one, but if someone asked me to choose between the 1950 dodge power wagon or the 2016 ram 1500, 1500 can go take a hike. It's just the sentimental value that I hold with classic vehicles as opposed to these modern ones. These are disposable in my opinion. It's all about power and speed and competition. I don't even feel like some people can enjoy all cars without going at each other's throat about horsepower and junk like that. That's just me, if any of that made sense.

    why has nobody mentioned you could actually work on the classics yourself and make them your own - not to mention you didn't run the real risk of blowing some onboard computer if you needed a boost - the new clones are just pale imitations when it comes to pure fun (and gas was 40 cents a gallon back then with full service everywhere and every gas station had an air pump when your tires ran low - try and find one now)

    Even though modern day "Muscle" cars have more power on average, nothing beats getting in a 60's or 70's Tank. Anytime I sit down on the white vinyl covered bench seat in my Dad's '70 Chevelle SS 396 I start shaking. I know my limitations with any vehicle I have owned in my 24 years(I've had quite a few cars I've built up). That Chevelle literally scares the living shit out of me. Nothing beats those days. Big lead sleds, with big blocks and throaty exhausts.

    I really love the older muscle cars but prefer custom cars of any kink and I like to see them being used doing donuts and burnouts in the middle of the road instead of being a complete concors restoration and never being used because owners are to scared to damage them.

      +Jay Bareham Yes. I agree completely. I hate seeing awesome machines just set in garages because people are afraid to scratch them. They are meant to be used and played with. Even a rare classic needs to be opened up from time to time. Why buy a cool toy if you aren't gonna play with it?

    Yay, the 1972 Pontiac Firebird SD-455 was my favorite muscle car ever, and I was so sad to hear when Pontiac had gone bust. It's so nice to hear it might come back.

      id imagine 11s or high 10s for a 440 6pack when i was a kid my dad had a 70 challenger r/t with a 383 and with minor mods it was doing 12s in a standing quarter

    My dad bought an 1989 Oldsmobile new and ran it for 460,000 Km before the rust killed it (since we live in Canada and they use a crazy amount of road salt in the winter). In the entire time he owned the car, no work was ever done to the engine, in fact the valve covers were never even taken off in the 13 years he had the car. We then inherited a '94 Camry and that had 395,000 Km on it before I got into an accident with it and it was still running strong then too.

      Chrysler had a reputation for engineering in the 50's...
      but by the time the 70's rolled around, they were just making rust-buckets.

      NO, they made junk.Fomoco and GM outsold them. Only 3 guys knew how to make a 426hemi run,and 2 of them were on the same team. I'm a Chevy guy because I have had to actually work on these old cars. I put a Charger 500 convertible on a lift and the doors opened,factory lift points...lol Small block Fords,they changed the flywheel balance and pushrod lengths 30 times...Chrysler and Ford ignition,starting and electrical systems...Nightmare!

    Three of my absolute favorite cars, new and old all compared, sweet! There is more than just raw performance to these cars, the sound, the looks, the way that peoples heads turn when they drive by. Respect given to all three (or six actually), with my preference towards the newer GT500 that I currently drive.

    One thing that might be in the latest generations favor is that in 20 years there won't be many nostalgia buyers left so prices might fall.

    Last time I checked fox body mustangs had metal intakes.
    They are also simple, still have a distributor, based on the Windsor small block that dates back to the 221 in 1962.
    I love my 289 with the 600cfm Carter AFB 4 barrel, No pain whats so ever, installed the right jets and metering rods, set the two mixture screws and I was good to go.
    Simple, reliable, proven.
    will last another 50 years till its time for another rebuild, then 50 more years, and so on and so fourth.

    i have a 1977 camaro. im 18 and honestly getting in my car and turning it on doesnt compare to the newer cars. theres just something about it that makes me love and appreciate my car more than those who have the new cars :)

    The 69 camaro is amazing I AM a chevy girl! But when it comes to drag I have to give my fav to a Subaru sti!! Still amazing build on all the old cars I love old muscle cars!!

    I think they were the good old days because the old cars were alot more affordable to the average 20 something back then. So people enjoyed the power and style when they were young, thus the great memories. These new cars are priced for late 30-40 somethings with deeper pockets who have a little more money to blow. They are nicer cars, but the memories can't compare to when you were in your teens/20's. I think that is the major difference between the generations.

    I'll take the old everyday of the week and twice on Sunday! New cars may look, ride, be faster and stop better but, they can't compete for style, feel and character. Anyone that has ever been behind the wheel of an old car knows they have their own personality. It also doesn't take much to bring them up to today's standards either. Might cost more for some than others but, you have the coin to buy some of the new ones you'd still come out cheaper with the old ones.

    When I was a senior in High School in 1977 the school parking lot was filled with Muscle cars. Even though I like the styling of the old cars my 2015 Mustang performance package Will walk circles around anything of that era let's get real.

      Yeah I mean, if you were talking 70s or 80s cars I would disagree highly, but car companies since have had 40+ years now to develop high performance engines under choking emissions law. The 70s and 80s were terrible times for oerformance, and anything pre 70 could smoke basically anything until the 90s.

      John Mcclain​ yeah maybe not unfortunately, but we have 2 other things I haven't really seen imagined in old sci Fi. Electric and now hydrogen powered vehicles. Though I'll be honest, it would've been interesting to have a car powered by garbage like in bttf last year lol.

    nothin' like the classic stuff! My dad has a collection of old-school Muscle cars, and im going to be fixing up a '70 Monte Carlo, its big, has a bench seat and a 3-speed slush-o-matic, haha, ultimate cruiser!

    What made "muscle cars" of the '60's so satisfying is their performance compared to the average car on the street in its day. Also there were relatively few high performance cars around. If you had a Ram Air IV GTO, Hemi GTX, 375 HP 396 Chevelle, or Boss 429, chances are you had the fastest car in town.
    Now days cars that go 0-60 in under 6 seconds and a 14 second quarter mile time are common place.
    Current "muscle cars" would be the GT-R, ZR1, and the new ZL1 and Shelby GT500

    I have to agree the classic muscle is a better cruiser because face it 40 years ago the mechanics were no where near perfect. But the one thing I really love about them is they're versatile not only do they look better and no matter who the person they'll love to drive it, but they can be upgraded to compete if necessary. Of course that throws away almost all of the classic feel but at the same time it pushes them over the limit to be able to conquer any race.

    xD Haha, I am a Ford guy, but all 6 of these cars are amazing. I love them all. They're amazing. But, just like MT said, you can't beat the vintage iron. Dad's got a '66 Mustang show/strip car, and bought it when I was 5 months old and restored it over the next 3 years. Still go to shows with it. Good times, good times. ;D

    Insurance companies happened. If you remember, insurance was dirt cheap for these cars in the beginning. Then the companies found that crash rates were higher with V8 powered cars and so rate skyrocketed. Then the the oil embargo came, after that the mass produced performance vehicles which were almost as common as hatch backs today slumpped. Low production numbers + high insurance rates + exspensive gasoline + lower competition = more exspensive performance cars

    I was born in 1991 and I love classics but Im a bit of a purist with them If you want lo-pro tires,sat nav,ABS,traction control,low stance,over done stereo system,goddy paint job,those new fangled fancy man 3 point seat belts then drive a modern car dont molest a classic trying to turn into something it will never be.
    I think somewhere along the lines something happened that all the "old" guys love the modern junk and us "kids" love the legendary classics.
    Ain't no school like the old school.

    Mopars were a nightmare to drive in the rain if you had any motor and posi. I had a Roadrunner and my buddy had a challenger that I drove home for him in the rain and had me shaking. The runner had a long enough wheelbase to be forgiving on straight wet roads but sucked on sharp curves. Given I didn't have the best tires for the duty...

    One winter I pulled my Challenger RT into the icy drive thru lane at the bank. With a light touch on the brake pedal the stock big block made enough torque at idle that the car started crossing up sideways just sitting there. Slipped it into park and the rotation stopped for a couple of seconds. The combustion was violent enough at idle that the car started rotating sideways again. *Said no late model Challenger owner ever.

    I still adore the classics than the new ones, no matter the performance. Although people have been known to put tuned up engines to classics to make them faster

    Sure the new ones are made to RESEMBLE the classics, they will never feel, look, or sound the same. Gotta love the classic American muscle. Even though I am a mopar fan I definitely respect any classic American muscle car.

    Ultimately, the classics clearly win because the whole reason for cars like these is the feeling and experience of driving them in a normal environment. The oldies win all of those categories other than slightly trailing in straight line speed. If you really want a "performance car" where the main criteria is braking, handling, lap times etc...you don't get any of these. You either get something European, Japanese or you go with the even higher grade track spec version like a new Z28 or GT350R or a Z06 Vette ...you don't even consider Mopar, unless you count the ACR, but thats cheating.
    So basically anyone who chooses one of the 3 modern cars in this video is getting it because they either can't afford the restored classic or they want a warranty. The difference in performance is irrelevant.

    I was thinking the same thing. And they had the stang and challenger w/autos. I understand it's quite difficult to be choosy with extremely rare cars such as those but they are from the times when a stick was a much bigger leg up in all out speed than it is today.

    I am not an old man, but I grew up in the cars of the 70's, 80's, 90's and 2000 on and I can tell you American cars are Faster, handle better and all around better built, more reliable cars then any time in history. Moreover, some models are just as good looking. With that said the retro cars from the 70's were pretty cars, but at the time people did not think much of them.

    Man, all I know is I love my Ford Mustang GT with it's 412HP coyote engine, 6 speed and 3:73 gears it is simply amazing. And I am a GM guy! All for 32K New with leather, brembos, and heated seats!

    before posting had to read the comments here. Well guys just give new cars a litle time. We are just not used to them, thats all. When it comes to looks well charger kept the looks more than others and it cost it speed due to weight. I agree classics bring us memories and thats why we love them but trust me we will have memories with new once too...

    I absolutely love the paint on the '70 Challenger. I think he said it was Charcoal Iridison. It would look great on my favorite muscle car, the '70 Cuda.

    The only thing safer about old cars is that they are so much more noticeable people are less likely to run into you since they will either see you or hear you coming. Face is right, old cars are deathtraps compared to new cars. The only thing is the heavy engines in the older cars are more likely to smash the newer cars in case of a front end collision. Still without any crumple zones, your car might not be as messed up due to momentum but your face will be when it slams into the steering wheel.

    You can resto mod any vintage muscle car to perform at levels approaching or exceeding their modern counterparts. Interiors are easy enough to fix, suspension is a bit more work but has been done.

    Great idea, bad vid. I'd love to see this re-done with real footage. Also a rolling start to get a real idea of which car is faster, not just which car can get traction. I have a 67'Stang w/ a 331 stroker, mounted to a AT 3 speed. (330hp/385trq) I've walked new Camaro's, and traded shifts with newest SRT8's. From a dig though, I just can't do anything unless I had some major DR's. It would be really cool to see.
