There is a school of thought that unless you are a single-digit handicap, there is no need for you to be on the range and try to shape the ball left to right, right to left, low or high. The main goal should be to make repeatedly good contact with the ball and have a golf shot/shape that you can reasonably rely on. I am a decent golfer (single hcp) but when I play in tournaments I have learned not to try to hit a fade for that one pin that is tugged in the right corner of the green, when 90% of my shots before were just straight or draws. I think a lot pros tell their amateur partners in Pro-Ams to stick to one shot shape. I rather try to work on controling trajectory based on wind or obstacles on the course. Remember, something like 80% of all golfers are around 15 HCP or worse. There are other struggles than fades and draws on command to get to a 10 HCP.
Great video, Peter! I prefer to start my practice at the chipping range, much like Tiger Woods. Once my short swing is in sync and my shots are consistent, I move on to full swing shots and finish with the putter. Additionally, I make sure to stretch at home and on the way to the range. To prepare my back, I turn on the heated car seat. 50+ years routine. Cheers!
Love the fact you channel people towards your club pro for help before pushing out your advice. Yes your help and advice helps many. Your club pro knows the swing and how to tweak it. Pete you are the best people person. You’re a great human. One of my favs 💚
Hack motion sent me a set of videos for drivers that struggle with a slice for free and it absolutely changed my game. I am not very good, but it literally added 30-40 yards on every club and got rid of my short slice (when executed, still needs lots of practice). I am 100% ordering a hack motion now, I never knew how much wrist angles effected my game.
Thanks, Pete! I have a GC3 and hit 150+ balls everyday at home, I have been trying to get a more smooth/consistent swing like yours. I defiantly think only working on one change at a time, is so important. Trying to change to much at once only leads to frustrations. Thanks
I prefer time sessions rather than number of balls and to work on specific clubs I.e. yesterday 1 and 1/4 hours with 5w that I was struggling with and driver that all of a sudden started going wayward off of the tee the day before. Can’t remember how many balls I hit…but feel much better today!
Hi Pete. Perfect time for this video!! I haven't been able to get to the range recently but I am going on Saturday. So will definitely look to bring these tips into my session. Then playing on Sunday so look to take what I am working on to the course
If you don't have all the tech... something I've enjoyed is going to the range with a golf buddy. Literally a friend who firstly simulates conditions because you'll always be chatting on the course. Secondly instead of reviewing video constantly instant feedback from the mate should help and thirdly it stops you from rushing through the balls and challenges each other to focus on the pre-discussed routine. Finally it also gives you someone who helps you grow your game especially if they're better or in the case that they're not better than you teaching them helps you enforce your own fundamentals. Thanks Pete!!!
Great video Pete. Really useful. As I (slowly!) Get better at the game, the benefits of a structured session at the range (particularly in winter when courses are struggling) is vital. More like this please 🙏
Watch golfsidekick breaking series... how to read lies.. pure gold..i went from 120s for 18 holes to mid 80s in a four years.. like pete says, what you practice.. Putting is the easiest to get good at, and slashes stokes. Best of luck..
The #1 flaw or mistake I see in the USA, is guys who pull out DRIVER and hit the first 10 balls from the bucket expecting perfection. This is complete insanity. Start with PW, then 8 iron, 6 iron, a few 5W/3W's, and then Driver. I hit 4-5 shots with each iron before touching a wood. (This is advice I acquired from Mr. Jack Nicklaus in the mid-1980's.)
I never use tech.. find a ball which you believe to be a 9, 8,7, wood distance and so on. now hit at it..watch that ball flight, to help you aim.. you will get great at it in a few times out.. best of luck...
Two things I like to remind myself when on a range, 1. Don't focus on distance with range balls. Studies show that range balls do not fly as far as a new quality ball, so don't worry if your 7 iron isn't going as far as you know it should. The balls are hit 1000's of times and they are usually reconditioned and refinished old balls and in some cases, they are limited flight. 2. spend more time on my short game than on your long game unless you're working on a specific thing. Short game is 50% or more of my range practice. 30, 40, 50, 60, 70 yard shots.
How does your first point not impact and contradict with your second point? If range balls don’t go the right distance, what’s the point of dialing those sub70 10 yard gaps with shit balls?
It's about rythm and timing. At a 60 yard shot the loss of distance on a range ball is only a couple yards. At 30 it's negligible. But at 130 with a wedge it could be as much as 10. Focusing on short game to clean up the strikes and consistency will carry over onto the course much easier than it will trying to force a range ball to get your normal full wedge orn7biron distance. Plus I bring my launch monitor with me.
150 yard gap wedge....in winter, stuff of dreams....not sure I've got enough energy or discipline for all that but hopefully I can try a few things from that absolute treasure chest of good advice!
For a beginner, the tip that worked for me the most is don't hit irons off the mats. Only wedges and woods. 1. Mats are bad on your body. 2. Realism off the grass. Get into real grass as much as possible because the sight, feel of stance and turf interaction is just so much different than on a mat. You could crush it at the range, and once you hit grass you just fluke. Keep it in grass and aim shots as if you are looking at a pin.
I understand this , but I’ve been playing around 5 months . My only aim right now is trying to just hit the ball in air. I understand I come over the top and mess 80% of my shots , really struggling of the feel of coming from the inside
Mate, Rome wasn't built in a day.. you can play with a slice shot shape and still score.. set up position, and body position help a ton.. watch golfsidekick breaking 100,90, and yes 80 as well..maybe keep 4,5 iron,3 wood out of the bag..loft is everones friend. Get a 9 wood or 7w?you got this..
Great vid, as a golfer tying to level up my game this type of video always gives bits of advice that help me out! 👉(Plus the swing quest channel) 👈 had to!! Thanks Peter
How do you deal with failure on the range, like you try to work on you technical change but it's getting worst, or you try the tik take toe but you can't even hit the ball. what do you do? do you go home ?
-If you don’t want to waste money- Get a bag of golf balls (150) and a pitching wedge, and a 7 iron go to your local field. If they have goal posts perfect, walk 50 yards away from them drop half. walk another 50 yards, repeat, chip to the goal posts, aim to hit the cross bar do fades stingers draws the lot, keep yourself engaged an having fun, Do this regularly and your short game will be deadly. Range balls🫥driver and putter is dependent on the weather and season, you can’t master them in non course conditions. Practice in awkward positions(out of the thick rough), not ideal positions (teeing off/ off mats)
Very good tips but my guy I just want solid contact every time I don’t care where it goes or how far I just want to hit it pure every time lol no way can I make a pressure practice yet because I would still be chunking half of them
Just finished smashing over 2 thousand balls in the last 4 days. I have not been focused bc I don't remember what worked and what did not. Lol😅 this is why im stuck at 9 handi
One really important thing that's been missed here is that range balls are in a lot of places, a percentage of a real ball. So, don't use them for distances.
Also, and this works for every type of handicap : get yourself an Ogio bag. I mean, come on. Life's too short and the british weather too gray to not grab one.
Do you not feel too many people focus on swing technique and body position and too few (like Jon Rahm) focus their efforts on outcome? Is the ball going where you want it to go? Make that your priority!!
One of the biggest mistakes is hitting too many balls before a round. Just hit 20 balls or so balls your not looking at diatance just make solid contact and now your ready!!
😂😅 warm-up... indeed. This without ball 10% of total training time. 30 balls warm-up and just getting contact and timing in check. But merely 100 balls total for technique and pressure training is way to little. There is one area that needs volume and that's automation. Getting something ingrained in the neural propreoceptors. Any pro in any ball or puck sports would go for 200 balls or more. Check NBA or tennis or Ice hockey. Power or speed training is something completely different ball game. Love the channe 🤘🏻😎🤘🏻

My tip advice is to hit the driver as HARD as possible for an hour then count your furthest as your average, go to the club house and buy a pint x
Do not think of the money, do not think of the money .... ;o) mental game

Pete am from Liverpool mate if I do them lunges in the range am getting golf balls threw at me head😂😂
😂
I can hear the scouse in this classic comment
Best to do them before leaving the house 😆
just warm up by nicking the wheels of a car in the car park. (just kidding - up the scousers! :-) )
@@andrewhoughton2617 If he is from liverpool, his bird will fill him in as well! 😂

I cant do that.. if i try to take range to course my head is a mess..

If only this video got released earlier today before I went the range myself. Thanks for the tips, Pete.
Just what i have been working on - focus per shot (15 shots per minutes or so... :)
Thanks for the supplemental tips! Let it rip!
I find one target, and work all the styles to it, different clubs for the same shot, really helps on the course given the situations.
Thanks Pete, I admit I had to look up the word "Practice" (new to me) but thereafter good stuff 🤣 Appreciate all the input as always 👏
I love warming up on trackman courses. It makes me focus more on proper setup and aim, and every shot is important.
I'm still happy if I hit the ball.. and when I do, every club I have goes 100 yards. Love it.
Finally someone who starts the practice session with some warm up.... thanks!
Quality video! I struggle with how to practice properly. Cheers Finchy 👍
I just do the, play my holes i am headed to, so tee ball and than 2nd shot, miss the green so chip.. always practice set up for me..
Good video. I’d like to see similar but focused on warming up at the range before a round. What shots/ routines do you hit then?
The #1 flaw or mistake I see in the USA, is guys who pull out DRIVER and hit the first 10 balls from the bucket expecting perfection. This is complete insanity. Do you have any advice on the best way to work on distance control on the range without trackman? My range doesn't have that or any yardage markers.
I never use tech.. find a ball which you believe to be a 9, 8,7, wood distance and so on. now hit at it..watch that ball flight, to help you aim.. you will get great at it in a few times out.. best of luck...

1. I go though 2 buckets sometimes because it’s just fun to hit at targets or challenge yourself
2. I hit balls as the warm up
Great practice video.
ya this was a great video! I'll add music and a whiskey reward for goal attained
Love your cap…🇳🇴
150 yard gap wedge....in winter, stuff of dreams....not sure I've got enough energy or discipline for all that but hopefully I can try a few things from that absolute treasure chest of good advice!
Also don’t go crazy at the range on the day of a round. Do all your work the days before so that you’re able to enjoy the round!!
Yep, set up, and what shot shape do you have that day.. than just go play
some great ideas there Pete, ta mate.
Twisting that shaft round your back gave me a stress rash. 😅

I imagine the tic tac toe thing to be Celebrity Squares and every seat has Les Dawson gurning in it.
-If you don’t want to waste money-

Are all UK ball machines square baskets? I've never seen that in the USA. I've been given bags of balls.
Next minute…. He’s at my local ha ha ha
Peter teach me your ways
I have a strong preference for the venue to be renamed The Knuts, Beechford
Very good tips but my guy I just want solid contact every time I don’t care where it goes or how far I just want to hit it pure every time lol no way can I make a pressure practice yet because I would still be chunking half of them
Great vid. Right, off to the range for 30 minutes to smash 100 balls with a driver.

I can play 9 holes in an hours, surely that is better…
Driver max swing first shot and then same every other shot untill basket is empty lesson over

Why do you speak so slowly and unnaturally on video?
Poor advice with the block practicing. It’s trash practice and leads to really bad, over thought, weak shots.
Great video Pete well explained practice session, 👌🏌♂⛳
