    “So be it, Jedi.”
I always think of Sidious’ response to Luke after the latter proclaims himself a Jedi. In particular how Palpatine says “Jedi” with such venom, as it disgusts him to his core.

It does. Most of the sith hated the jedi so much. I'm pretty sure someone like sidious would've thrown up after having his meetings with the jedi council when he was still hiding his identity.

I always felt that it wasn’t just Luke unleashing his Jedi fury on Vader during the last part of their duel but that he briefly did fall to the dark side and only regained control after he cut off Vaders hand and saw just how close he had come to following the same path and resolved himself back to the light side

    • @michaelray3865
      @michaelray3865 6 месяцев назад +25

Absolutely. George Lucas wrote it precisely that way. You can mark Palpy’s sadistic joy turn to fury by the expression on his face as Luke sees his fate if continued down the Dark path.

    • @minnumseerrund

Definitely. There's no such thing as "Jedi fury" - unless we're talking about Mace Windu's Vaapad, a style notoriously difficult to master to such a degree that every Jedi who used it, except Mace, fell to the dark side.

The ending is so good because several competing plot points built up over time (The Emperor's plan, Vader's plan, the Alliance's plan, and Luke's plan) converge in the throne room to create a moment of doubt surrounding the outcome of the encounter and the hero's journey. ... And what better way to resolve uncertainty on screen that with ACTION.

I did feel that Luke was in true danger of losing himself, of getting too close to the edge and falling into the void of darkness, and forever would the Dark Side rule his destiny, as Yoda had warned him
But in that critical moment, when Luke drew closer and closer to the edge as he unleashed his fury upon Vader, it was seeing his father's cybernetic hand and being reminded of his own, a physical representation of how alike they actually were and how dangerously close Luke was to becoming as trapped in the Darkness as his father had been
It was sympathy, empathy, and relation and understanding about his father in a way he had not been able to before, despite Obi-wan's journals and all the secondhand accounts he'd gotten of his father. This moment helped Luke understand father more than he ever had before and it was that understanding along with the realization that taking this path to the end would be the end of himself as Luke Skywalker, aspiring Jedi, Rebel Hero, and Hope of the Galaxy
Thus, he was able to regain focus and steel himself, cementing his adherence to the Light in spite of how closely he's skirted towards the Darkness and spit in the Emperor's face by his declaration that he would never turn to the Dark Side for he had become a Jedi like his father before him
And Sidious, infuriated yet focused with frigid hate upon this insolent boy, could only respond by acknowledging Luke's declaration to be true by addressing him as 'Jedi'

He tried to kill Jabba, the Emperor, and Vader because of a hypothetical future where his friends die or become monsters. Only when he stops this way of thinking does he realize that he's becoming a monster himself.

Great content. I feel that because Luke wasn't taken as a child to learn as a Jedi from a youngling after the Jedi Council didn't exist, Obiwan taught him realizing the mistakes of Jedi dogma. Luke was encouraged to reach out and search with his feelings/emotions allowing him to get opportunity not to be restricted by his emotions, but to embrace his personal intuitions to truly allow The Force to lead his own individual spirit to judge the situation with The Force. Not through the rules and regulations of The Council, but to experience the situations The Force allowed through his own eyes and with his own heart.

I love the dark empire series, this showes the enigma portrayed here perfectly.
You can sum it up to the point of contact when the empreor land luke’s mind touch in the force storm on corruscant, the mind of two, one in the purest light and one in the darkest of darkness.
Also it gives a good arc on how luke is able to walk the part between, so i belive luke at the end of dark empire is probably one of the most powerful of all times, also that he was closer to a grey jedi like mace windu.
Also that luke and leia at the moment of using the Power of light is as close to a full potensial chosen one we will ever see.
I could like parts of the last 3 movies as a close to the skywalker saga and new beginning with Rey, but only if they would make the dark empire series and let us see luke bloom into full potensial and going through and learning his fathers lessons.
I mean crushing a droid in mando is cool, ripping a star destroyer from space or just crushing a at at with the force like waving your hand well thats a statment.

Just like Yoda warned, Luke started down the Dark Path when he first went to Vespa. His choices were driven by fear, which later turned to anger during his duel with Vader and finally hatred upon discovery of their relation. And, just like Yoda warned, it forever dominated his destiny. Only it wasn't how Yoda expected it would. Luke's second confrontation with Vader on the second Death Star brought him to the brink of falling to the Sith and it was through this that Vader was able to finally fulfill the prophesy of bringing balance to the Force, not by killing Palpatine, but by Luke learning to balance the Light and Dark in himself as he stood over his defeated father and saw their true resemblance for the first time. Also, stop calling Disney 'Cannon'. It's shitty Fanfics with a billion dollar budget.

I always felt that what Palpatine felt was that because of Luke’s inexperience he was a great candidate. Unlike Anakin Luke went most of his youth ignorant of the force and the dark side, he didn’t have years to repress his feelings etc. So to that end there was no indoctrination to the Jedi for all those years. That to me would make him especially not only easily to convert but because of his emotions would be more easy to push to use them to great effect in the dark side.

I don't think it was wrong for Luke to just stroll into Jaba's and use any force abilities that might seem to be rooted in the Dark Side. He did attempt to use diplomacy by sending 3PO and R2D2 to negotiate. Arriving at Jaba's and finding out that Jaba wouldn't see him told him there would be no negotiation with him. Luke already knew that Jaba would kill anyone he didn't agree or was willing to deal with. Plus, he most likely was able to sense that Jaba was going to give the order to kill him, so what Luke did was self defense.

So, not something they actually did then. Mace windu literally being a prime example of that. Juyo itself has a dark origin. Some stuff was restricted, but not that much was genuinely forbidden. Additionally, it was restricted because dark sided artifacts and knowledge can, with their mere presence, corrupt those not prepared for them. And dark sided knowledge is more likely to turn an unprepared jedi or padawan too quickly, and as evidenced by how often Luke's jedi fell to dark artifacts, the jedi of the prequel era were exactly correct in that concern. Legends wise, Luke's jedi had a TERRIBLE track record for going dark sided compared to the prequel era of jedi. It was an extremely common occurence that one was either turned dark sided, or mind controlled by someone or something. They also fully showed they existed, they just restricted access to them. So....what any rational person would do with stuff that can turn an average padawan into a knight or master level threat.
But they didn't ignore emotions. As mentioned, there's literally a jedi known for his love of fighing, and not only do multiple jedi explicitly (and openly) express friendships and even familial or cultural connections. They also encourage enjoyment of things, many jedi drink and eat well, young jedi play games and have friendships, many jedi have had pets. The acceptance of the existence of emotions, but refusal to bow to them, both existed during the prequel era and in Luke's. Luke was more lax on formal and more permanent attachments like Marriage, but even in that area the jedi were not all encompassing on their strictness over it. The idea jedi tried to pretend emotions shouldn't exist is basically a fan invention, the films directly contradict that with obi wan, nearly the most traditional jedi imaginable, flat out saying he loved anikan, and how often jedi just full on ignored or encouraged the relationships people had only warning about being attached, but not about being friends or enjoying company. Jedi's usage of attachment is pretty clearly more specific than just 'oh you like person BAD.'

    • @flyingwambulance

@@firstnamelastname9237 The whole point of Anakin falling to the dark side is because he had to hide his attachement to Padmé and couldn't be open about it. Yoda clearly tells Anakin to let go off everything he fears to lose, we only fear to lose what we're attached to. The whole reason for the Jedi's downfall was because they were too dogmatic about these views. Even Yoda came to realize this after the fall of the Jedi.
Qui-Gon was what a true jedi should be and not even Yoda realized this until it was too late. I think you missed the point of the prequels.

    • @firstnamelastname9237

@@flyingwambulance No it *isn't* because he had to hide, he CHOSE to hide. He could legit have just left the order, numerous jedi of the past did so. THE PREQUELS THEMSELVES involve a jedi who not only did so, but was widely respected before people realized he was sith. His fall is because he was possessive and narcissistic. And also monumentally stupid but I don't think that part was intentional.
And it's not because they were dogmatic, if they were too dogmatic, he'd never have gotten in. There was no actual rule that the chosen one needed to be a jedi. It's because they were, themselves, failing the attachment issue. Not with people, but with the republic. They should have been more independent.
I mean you're right, but you did miss the why of qui gon. Qui Gon Jinn does what he thinks is the most likely will of the force, the jedi have grown attached to the republic and so instead of trying to follow the force properly and acting indipendently, mistake their duty as being to the republic. Qui Gon Jinn consistently acts independent of outside influence, he's clearly jedi, but you could toss him into any era, and his actions wouldn't change. Someone like Mace Windu, who is extremely attached to the republic, would likely be wildly different in the era of the empire.
The idea that it was because they were too dogmatic (while somehow missing them repeatedly NOT following dogma) came from the fans, not the actual stories.

I knew Luke was close to the dark side, as he was to the light side. When we judge Luke, we do so with the notions of the Jedi in the Republic. That's not who the Jedi were when the order was formed. They've evolved and as the dark side left it's mark on the light side, so has the opposite happened. Luke is of the new and improved Jedi, not shunning the dark but accepting that there must be a balance and I knew that's how he acted. He brought balance to the Force.
Palpatine wanted to see what he wanted to in Luke; Vader was likewise blind to his son's force choice. They were both thinking in paradigms of the past. Yoda and Obi-Wan made the same mistake and underestimated Luke. It was Luke who evolved.

Luke was more like an original Jedi than like a "modern" Jedi. Original Jedi weren't "just" light side or dark side and they encouraged relationships.

  • @Edward-nf4nc

Yes I did notice. I was relieved to see Vader block Luke's attack on the Emperor. The way Luke slammed his lightsaber down on Vader's was scary. However I liked the way Vader held up his remaining hand in a way that was saying 'enough, enough'. The mighty Lord Vader was pleding for his life!
However, I always thought it was the Emperor who stopped Luke from killing his father. It caused Luke a distraction from his emotions of anger towards Vader and allowed Luke to calm down.
It also showed Vader how different Luke was from Anakin. Anakin would always kill to bring peace and protect his friends and loved ones, but Luke showed he would rather die as a Jedi than kill to save his friends. This showed Luke had what Anakin had not, limits, and knew when to fight and when to stop.
This is what Sidious feared. Luke had proven he could over come his fears whilst Anakin could not. When he realised this, he realised the spirit of the Jedi was not dead and Luke's death could inspire others. The hope the Jedi brought in dark times had returned! And Luke's death would not stop it!
It was here he realised he had failed as a emperor and would have to become a Sith Lord to deal with this...."Jedi"
And as Anakin carried Sidious to the shaft he realised Yoda and Luke were right! "Faith in your new apprentice, misplaced maybe. As is your faith in the Dark Side of the Force" and "your over confidence is your weakness". The Dark Side blinded Sidious and his faith in Vader was misplaced and he died for it!

And this is exactly why we need a Rogue Squadron series in the Clone Wars format set between A New Hope and Return of the Jedi. Star Wars: OT OG's. Written by Filoni, with folks like Famuyiwa, Howard, and Favreau contributing. Luke's character development was great in the movies but you have three years between IV and V and one between V and VI and there's so much more to expand on for him, Leia, Han, Chewie, Lando and even Vader.

When I watch Luke enter Jabbas castle dress in all black. I was concerned for him. Yet I wasn't convinced until he forced choked the guards. I said to myself as a young person oh no he turned to the dark side to save his friends. Dag, Yoda warned LUKE!!! ABOUT GIVING IN TO HATE, FEAR, AND HIS ANGER. However, as the movie played on I saw he was still good and pure at heart ❤️.. But I noticed he was different than the Jedi that came before himself. And I said this is the change the Jedi order needs. The ability to love someone other than their self would help teach them early on in life how to coupe with their feelings and keep them from turning to the dark side. This was amazing!!! And may the force be with you all.

You know what I found interesting is that I believe Darth Vader purposely stopped Luke from striking palpatine down because in his vision he wanted Luke to strike him down so they can take his place but I believe Darth Vader AKA Anakin did not allow Luke to do because he didn't want Luke to go down the same path as he did

The redemption of Vader was so beautiful and well done. It sucks that seeing Palpatine (one of the coolest Sith Lords) again in the new trilogy felt wrong because of the original storyline. I love the cloning concept and that whole plot line is pretty cool, it still feels bad that Vaders redemption just slowed down Palpatine rather than destroy him.

I would argue that Luke's actions with the force in the chamber were a ruse to lower Joba's threat assessment of his power to further his real escape plan.
I could be wrong but I doubt Luke's plan from the start was to "kick down the door and fight everyone at such a strategic disadvantage.

Interesting view on Luke. I like to think his actions with Jabba etc. were different from Jedi during the Republic because they were being weakened by the Sith then. It’s very nuanced for sure, but it seems that the Jedi could and should have been more “aggressive” in protecting the light of the force. They tried to balance but for too long…Luke may have determined this error of the past and corrected it. He was to “bring balance” to the force as they say. True balance…

I think it should be noted that the dark side is a mental path, and a choice that you make, just like the light side. It's not necessarily something that defines your very being, and it's that mistake that made the Jedi mostly unable to redeem their conterparts.
It's not because you did something bad with the force / as a force user that your entire life will be in the dark side. Everyone slips up at some point, but you still have the choice of not going further, of being selfless again after letting out justified anger.

Luke was tremendously powerful in the force but he was not truly a Jedi Darth Vader was a Sith Lord but when he saved his son he became what he wants was a Jedi so once Anakin Skywalker came back there’s your return of the Jedi because Luke technically wasn’t fully trained well enough yet to really be considered a Jedi but Anakin Skywalker absolutely 100% was a Jedi return of the Jedi Anakin Skywalker turned away from the Darkside to save his son

Filoni describes the Luke of the OT in that scene, and how Lucas wanted to the audience to perceive it. Ryan’s Luke was a guy, ruled by fear and limitations that never really evolved from the Empire Strikes Back. Note how he highlights that Luke believed throughout that there was still good in his father and uses selflessly casts his lightsaber aside forcing Anakin to choose to be the father. Ryan’s Luke would’ve believed him to be irredeemable and try to kill him just to get away, if he ever even managed to crawl out from under the stairs.

You're wrong. It wasn't done as a moment of passion for his friends. It was planned out, every move. It had to be in order to end up on that plank on the Sand Barge which is where Lukes plan came to fruition. You see Dark Side use in a moment of passion, I see cold, calculating precision, (and more than just a little plot armour). Palpatine thought Luke was stronger than Anakin because the Force is manipulated by living tissue and Vader didn't have as much as Luke did at that point.

Problem is that over time, Palp's "join the Dark side" sales pitch and skills got pretty awful.
To Anakin: "Those jedi hate you and don't respect you and are hiding stuff from you. Join me and I'll show you the lot. Oh and you get the weekly bonus: I'll stop your wife from dying."
To Luke: "Heh heh. Young fool. I corrupted your dad and now I'm going to murder your buddies while you watch. Join me."
Luke: "Uh? Why the heck would I want to do that?"
Palp: "Um. Heh heh. Good question. Dunno." "Uh. It's your destiny? I didn't really think about it and George didn't either."
