  • I finally purchased the Sigma 150-600mm Contemporary lens! I went out for a nature photo walk with this beast of a lens and captured some photos of wildlife. I also give my first impressions of this lens: the negatives and the positives. If you have this lens, definitely comment your opinion on it and your experience with it! Paired the Sigma with my Canon M50 and my Viltrox Adapter.
    Don't worry, the Canon M50 is still a lens I will continue to use frequently but I am loving using that longer range and sharpness with the Sigma.
    Thanks for your support and hope you enjoy!

    I have this exact camera and lens combo! I would suggest to use the lens at f/8 and set the focus distance switch on the lens to 10m-infinity. This will give you sharper images and faster autofocus performance.

    • @shaydlens
      @shaydlens  5 месяцев назад

      Thank you for the suggestion. I will definitely try it out at f/8. Appreciate that.
      With the focus distance switch I’ve toggled sometimes between all of them depending on the distance of my subject. However I found full easier as sometimes the subject may move back farther. I will give it a try with the 10m-infinity again!How are you liking the lens?

    I contemplated for 2 years about buying this lens, and then I saw one-second hand for a great deal and a 2year warranty and I do not regret buying it one bit. The image's sharpness is outstanding. Agree that it can be a bit annoying to carry around for 3 hours or more, also the minimum focus distance is a pain sometimes. But what it's intended for it does exceptionally well. Birding, Moon, Wildlife I did buy a tripod and that does help, but I am a bit lazy to carry it with me. Look forward to your 6-month review of this lens.

      Love to hear it. It’s great you finally purchased it and at a good deal!
      It’s nice to hear of other people’s experiences with this lens. I’m excited to play around with this lens and see what I can capture.
      Yep, my tripod usually doesn’t come with me unless I absolutely have to use it. Which isn’t often. Although I can see myself using it more now if I’m gonna be out for a very long time.

    ive had it for a year now, the only thing to do about the weight is to find a comfortable strap. im happy with it, theres no cheaper alternative for 600mm

    Can I just say that I wholeheartedly appreciate you letting the lens speak for itself for the first couple of minutes of the video. Your shots are absolutely amazing, and I like that you even included your "mistake" which I thought was pretty artsy too, but it also just shows what it looks like when *that* happens. Specs is one thing, but seeing it all in action that extensively is another, and that's something a novice like me really appreciates :D

      Nice, I considered the 100-400mm, it seems like a fantastic lens and lighter than the Sigma. But I worried it still wouldn’t be enough of a range. I also liked the affordability of the Sigma.

    Relatively new subscriber here, and I was wondering when you would get something longer. Congrats! (Even though you have great images with the 55-250mm) I recently got into birding this fall and got the Nikon 200-500mm and the thing weighs 5 pounds! So I know that's a lot to get used to. Because of that, I also bought my first gimbal as well. Focusing has been a challenge with the long focal length and hand holding. It takes practice. You have some great shots here. Keep it up. Nice to see someone else going through the same process!

      5 lbs is heavy when you’re used to shooting for hours with light lenses haha but definitely easier as we build up our biceps 💪🏻 How are you liking using the gimbal? Which one did you end up purchasing?

      @@shaydlens Nothing too crazy, I got the Oben GH-30 Gimbal Head. I haven't tried it out in the field yet but setting it up in home was easy and it's really smooth. Should be a good shooting alternative once I get back out there. Eagerly awaiting the spring birds...

    bought this lens together with a R8 as i had to retire my M50. tried using this lens with the M5 and the auto-focus did struggle. with R8 it works well. mostly shooting handheld. only mount it on a tripod when shooting the moon. definitely a step up after spending about a month with the TTArtisan 500mm f6.3.

    • @shaydlens
      @shaydlens  Месяц назад

      Too bad but nice that it works with the the R8. I haven’t had too many issues with the autofocus with my m50 luckily but I find it is better to use for bigger subjects. I find it harder to focus on the smaller birds if they’re moving super fast.
      How do you like the R8?

    • @JoshRoamingAround
      @JoshRoamingAround Месяц назад

      Love the R8 considering it feels lighter. I think its tad lighter than M50 also. hardly use the M5 nowadays. i still carry it with me though as back up just in case its drizzling. rather have the M5 get slightly wet than the R8.

    Ohh you really got that dream lens. Almost jealous with my 250D and 55-250mm lens. That's one of my most wanted lenses, but just too espensive even second hand. But for sure will get it in the future when I can. First have to put all the little extra money to my upcoming therapy anf stuff. Have fun and good times with the 150-600! May I ask how much you paid for the lens?

    • @shaydlens
      @shaydlens  5 месяцев назад +1

      Yes I am so grateful for it! I’ve been wanting it for a while now. Hopefully you will get it in the near future, it’s definitely one of the more “affordable” lenses in that range. I got it new for $1100 Canadian. You can definitely find some used ones for a lower price. You also can usually rent the lens from your local store to try it out.

    I wish Sigma and Tamron would build a super telephoto zoom with internal zooming like the Sony 200-600. I don't like how the barrel moves in and out and the wear and tear that goes on inside the lens to move the barrel. Not having to force the barrel to move is very nice. There is no effort, but with this Sigma, there is a lot of effort. Also barrel creep may set in eventually. Sigma did make a 70-200 with internal zooming, they need to do that with superzooms.

    I have this lens for 2 years now, using with R6, and I have similar thoughts. It's a great lens for not so packed matrix, for example 20mpx in FF. I didnt try it with R5, so Im not sure if stays as sharp as with R6. And yes, external mic doesnt reduce noise of AF, this is to be removed in postprod, or, if object not moves that much switch to MF. I plan to replace it with 400 2.8 with TC at the end of the year, but it's hell bunch of money. I wonder what else Canon release this year. 100-500 or 200-800 are not in my area of interest, they are to dark and to expensive for their capabilities. Also wonder if there will be Sigma RF lens like this any time soon. Anyway, enjoy your trips for wildlife :)

    I thought long and hard about which lens to get as an upgrade from the 55-250mm. I ruled out the Canon 100-400mkii due to cost and weight. The Sigma and Tamron 150-600mm were heavy so that left the Sigma and Tamron 100-400mm. On paper and a couple of reviews the Tamron was better but I bought the Sigma as it was cheaper and as I already had a few art lenses decided to buy the dock to update the firmware. For the majority of photos using a crop Dslr 77D it works well except for smaller birds at a distance where even cropping results in poor IQ. I am now trying out changes to the OS and AF using the dock to see what works best for birds in flight especially landing and taking off.
