Awesome review. Been pondering the decision for the last couple of weeks whether I wanted to buy one or not, after having the opportunity to test one out for a day (shooting water bombers scooping on a lake, battling a wildfire). Watched your video just now and literally clicked "place order" online. Thank you for the honest and accurate review/video, cheers from Canada.
Thanks Liam, awesome subject to try it out on, although not so great that they are needed. Hope they got The job done and no one gets hurt. If your shooting aviation I would really recommend the hand strap, there is an affiliate link on my gear page. It make everything much more stable and takes the pressure off your hand. Enjoy the lens. Look me up on Instagram and expect to see your pics using the lens on there soon.
@@BrianNorthmorePhotography Many thanks Brian, I'll be sure to take a look at that hand strap. With the help of those bombers, they were able to put out that wildfire before it impacted nearby houses. Saved the day! Just followed you on Instagram as well.
I have the older one of these - the 150-500, but I like it so much that I'm ordering the 150-600 for another body as its also a slight step up from the 150-500.
Thanks for your practical review of this lens. Most useful suggestions for me were: Using a hand strap to spread the weight when using hand held. Putting it on a monopod when taking photographs of birds. Thank you.
I’ve had mine for about a month and once I got used to camera/lens settings and optimised focus etc I am extremely pleased with it.. Contemporary lens is adequate and is light rain proof.. the sport lens is heavier and costs a lot more! No way I’m parting with the lens.. any more upgrades are going to be camera based!
I do aviation and bird photography too and I recently bought this lens to go with the new Canon 90D body. Haven't got much chance to use it yet as it's been raining everyday here lol. It's monsoon season. I also have a second hand 100-400mm mark 1 version and probably will enjoy using them both.
It’s a great lens. Check out the link on my website, webpage. If the price is good it helps out my website with a small commission. Have a very Merry Christmas, and the enjoy lens.
I bought this lens before I went on a safari in Tanzania, and super glad I did. I got some amazing photographs, well at least amazing for me. Worth every penny for me.
Brilliant review - thank you. I guessed the answer to the 'shall I keep it' question during the last sequence of still bird shots - and I was right! I too, have this lens on a cropped sensor Canon camera and I wouldn't get rid of it either.
Thanks for the review Brian. I have been looking to improve my wild life pictures and been handicapped by the lack of reach. Your excellent review has made my mind up to get this lens.
Thanks Paul, I’m glad you found it useful. If your going to buy a lens please check out my affiliate links. Every little bit helps keep the channel going.
I truly enjoy mine as well. I was shooting it on a 7D ii, but I have recently purchased the 5D iv and I don't regret it in the least. Thanks for your thoughts!
Hi, Brian i am from Kenya and i do wildlife ... I just bought this lens a month ago and tested on my both bodies 7d2 and 5d3 and happy with images .... its a bit soft at 600mm but stopping down to f9 to 11 it gives good sharp images but only if the image size captured is aprox 70% in the view finder, .. one other focus problem I saw was it doesn't focus in haze if the subject is far due to compression. Otherwise it excels on both bodies. KEEP it.
Hey thanks for this amazing review. I went through the same thing you did. I was shooting crop sensor and upgraded full frame. I was using the canon 100-400 mk2 at air shows but when I can't get to the photo pit and am stuck further back I found 400mm was not enough reach. The sigma 600mm contemporary is a beautiful lens one of the best purchases I've made. It is idea for air shows and the small birds and wildlife, and at 600mm f/6.3 there is nice back ground blur as well. Nice prop blur shots by the way - hope you get to some air shows now in 2021/22.
I've had this lens for several months, and though the weight was somewhat daunting at first, I use a shoulder strap to help mitigate that. I can now shoot with it for a couple of hours without difficulty. It gets amazing shots of wildlife, which is why I bought it.
@@BrianNorthmorePhotography I ordered it at Amazon, and when I looked for the link, I was told it was currently unavailable. :( Just search on camera shoulder strap and you should find similar items.
Don’t bother going tomorrow to get one. Get one today! Struggled with a Canon 100/400 for ten years plus and never had a shot as good as this lens. The prime snobs will say it’s not so sharp but don’t listen to them because its nite and day better than the Canon. Trust me you won’t regret getting this lens.
Greetings from across the pond, Portland, OR USA. Thank you Brian, I was looking into this lens for that extra reach for Wild Life photography. Thank you for this video very excellent!

Very good review. I learned a lot. Delighted to become a subscriber and looking forward to more. I will now look forward to sitting quietly with my cup of coffee and missing all those great shots of the birds deeding in my garden. Then again I might hit it lucky and get a good shot now and then. I bought one of these contemporary lens a while back. Thanks for reassuring me that maybe I will get there if I stick at it.
Thanks, Brian! Glad you found it useful. I hope you do get the results you are looking for. I have a couple of videos going into detail how I did the garden bird photography so please watch these they may help. If you have any questions then please ask.

@@BrianNorthmorePhotography Hi Brian. Thanks. I’m looking at adding another angle to my channel and some wildlife photography should neatly slip in. I’ve been to many air shows but usually in the display seat (used to display the Hercules in the 90s)! Thanks for the links. Alas, like you, I’ll have to take advantage of an interest free offer and Amazon doesn’t offer that. I’ll look at your back catalog - I hope you do a tutorial on the lens settings/switches!!? ATB. Great video Brian , really easy to listen too. Ilike how you explain everything so simple . My passion in photography is Motorsport I have the sigma 150 500mm and it has served me so well the question i would like to ask is should i upgrade , will i see a difference in my photographs. Other than the extra 100mm . I have subscribed to your channel and lookforward to catching up on your previous videos
Richard, that’s a hard question to answer. Because without having both lenses to compare I would only be guessing. It also brings on other questions different lens / camera combinations work better than others. And also with 100mm more you may need to use a higher ISO to get the shutter speed you need. Higher ISO = more noise. Personally for motorsport ( and I have not shot a Lot of motorsport) I wouldn’t bother. I would also ask yourself is this something I need or want? What problem are you trying to solve? If you really need 100mm more maybe see if you can hire the lens somewhere. When I bought mine I did it with the view I could sell it on at the end of the year and claim back some of the money if it didn’t suit. If you do decide to buy please check out my affiliate links the small bit of revenue helps pay for the channel / web costs. Thanks for commenting.
Thanks, very useful video. I'll be getting one of these in January to compliment a new Canon 90D. Really looking forward to it. Mach Loop here I come! 😀
Enjoy! The loop isn’t as busy as it used to be. But I must return for a trip one day. Good luck when you get there, Bit of snow on the hills and an f15 low level I can see it all now!
Great review, and decision. I have two of the older versions of that lens. On my Sigma SD14 camera, I have the 150-500 lens. On my Canon 6D Mk2 I have the 50-500. Love them both, but the 150 to 500, I believe, is a little sharper. Would love to get the 150-600, but I already have a little over $1000.00 USD in these two lenses, maybe close to 1100. Bought them on ebay, they are both like new, and I would not even THINK of taking less than 500. for each if I sold them.(which I won't). I do the same photos as you, and use a gimbal (Sometimes). Mainly, hand-held. Use a window sill for most of the birds. Anyone thinking about one of these lenses, quit thinking, and just go get one. You won't regret it.
Thanks a lot for this great review! I've been debating between this lens and the Nikon 200-500 (which currently is $550 more), and you've pretty much convinced me to opt for this Sigma.
Works for me David! And the price difference is significant. Depends how much you will use it as well? My main subject is Landscape so it only comes out for the odd Aviation shoot.
@@BrianNorthmorePhotography I realized my 70-300 kit lens wasn't getting me close enough to capture the birds and other wildlife in my area, so I started looking for something that could reach out to at least 500mm. After many hours of research, I narrowed it down to this one and the Nikon, but as you said, the price difference is really big. I even found an authorized Sigma dealer in my city who sells a bundle that includes the USB dock and some other accessories for only $899, which was the final factor pushing me to the Sigma. Thanks again!
Fantastic Lens used on my Canon 5D mkiii, mainly used for bird photography, pinsharp images. Even got one of a hoverfly with wings open. Stunning lens for the money. Highly recommended.
good vid mate. I bought the same lens but for nikon. I absolutely love it. I get exceptional shots with mine, I have even got swifts feeding young on the wing with this. And my real pride and joy was a set of image I got of the ISS going over my house last june. I had to crop way in on the shots but I got images showing the outline of the body and panels of the ISS, It's amazing. I then create a GIF of the ISS moving front to back. I had seen shots others took of the ISS and never dreamed I could do this. I when out on my fitness walks the camera and lens always go with me, and yes its heavy after an hr on the shoulder, but its worth it. Its a MUST BUY for anyone that needs range.
I had this for over a year, sold it and got the Nikon 200-500mm 5.6. I had the Nikon until the end of July, sold it and I ordered another Sigma C because I missed that extra reach and the image quality wasn't any better with the Nikon than the Sigma. This is a great lens that I will stick with for a long time. I've even carried the Sigma on a 10.5 mile hike in the Smoky Mountains and it's not really that bad of a load. Great video Brian.
@@BrianNorthmorePhotography LOL I had the Sigma on a D810 on my Black Rapid strap, my 90mm macro on my D7200 with a backpack that had my 17-35, extra batterries, a tripod, ND and polarizer filters for waterfalls and a water bottle.
Hi, great review. I'm just an amateur. I was in the decision process, do I buy it or not. I like shooting nature, birds and wild life. I watched your videoS, really enjoy them. I'll be placing an order tomorrow for a Sigma 150-600mm. Thank you for this review! ps. your pictures are beautiful, wow!

I've had mine now since late last year (2021) Here in Australia the Sports model was going to be around $1000 more so I stuck with the Contemporary version! I was at first a bit disappointed with the Auto focusing but now I have made some changes I am quite happy with it shooting Birds! I had started using it on one of my Full frame Canons but have since been using on one of My Crops for that extra bit of reach! And yes it is a heavy lens to be hand holding for long periods at a time
Hi John, Thanks for the comment. Glad you got your focussing issues sorted. I use mine on the Canon 5D me iv and I set up a custom autofocus profile in camera for mine. If your interested in landscape photography I would love to have you comment on a few more videos.
Great stuff, Brian! Having just added a Canon 100-400 to my kit bag, I had been thinking of getting the 70-200 f/4, and in fact had convinced my wife to get me one for Christmas (I'm getting her a new bathroom for Christmas, so the negotiations were pretty easy). However, since I have the 55-250, the 70-200, even though of admittedly much better quality than the 55-250, would have been redundant. The only lens remaining on my wish list therefore was a 500mm, which would have been a little ways down the road. However, I saw a bunch of reviews for the Sigma 150-600 Contemporary here, read a bunch of reviews of the lens, and posted a few questions on the Canon forum. In short, I've revised my Christmas request. I believe the 150-600 C will be a really nice lens on my 1DX3, and also on my 7D2, once I get the hang of calibrating it correctly.
Yes it’s a great lens. You may not need to calibrate it. I never have but, maybe it’s something I should look at doing. I did think about getting the focal software so I could do all my lenses. I have an affiliate link on my website if you purchase through this it helps support the website. Rgds, Brian.
Hi Vimal it depends on what you want to use it for. If you just need to pan or tilt one axis at a time then it will be fine. But if you need greater freedom wildlife, aviation etc I think a gimbal would be better.
Great video thanks for the review. By the way, I found it pretty funny that, in a photography video, the focus was on the background the whole way through. ;)
😂 an early video of mine, if you could see what I was shooting video on back then you would understand! I have a Sony ZV1 fir vlogging now. Hope it didn’t put you off too much.
It’s a great lens for that, and a good price. I’ve used it a few air shows and it’s performed really well. Check out my affiliate link in the description if you are looking at buying
Great assessment of the lens Brian. I'd not seen this evaluation of it, but have watched, and read all the reviews of it before I committed to buy it 3 days ago, still awaiting delivery. I'd owned the 50-500 'Bigma' last year, but found it was not a good performer and promptly sold it. So, your review makes me feel better about my recent purchase. I did however go buy the hand strap, and while at Amazon, grabbed a shoulder sling as well. Thanks for the work you put into making these videos. Regards, Dennis
Dennis so pleased you found the video helpful. I hope your experience of the lens is the same as mine. If not don’t give up, experiment a bit first try lens calibration etc. I found the hand strap very good. I upgraded to this lens from a Sigma 150/500 which was a superb lens for my wildlife photography used on a Nikon D500. The Sigma 150/600 is so much better and that surprised me. I dont have any problem with the weight and I go out for 6+ hours at a time. Dont think about getting this lens just get it,you wont be disappointed.

@@BrianNorthmorePhotography I'm a commercial photographer so mostly people and businesses. I have canon 400mm prime but the limitations with a fixed focal length has meant I haven't used it as much as I wanted. I am going to be working out in Botswana when I can get out there so the extra reach out there will be handy
Hi Brian, I enjoyed your review and likewise my main hobby is aviation photography but during 2020 I tried my hand at wildlife in my garden, I get squirrels and numerous birds. I have the Canon 7D mk2 with a trusty Canon 650D as backup. My main long lens is the Canon 100-400L mk2 so I wondered if it would be advantageous to add the Sigma 150-600 to my lens arsenal ? Subbed you btw.
Ducati SupersportS First off thanks for commenting, and subscribing. You all ready have a fantastic set up. I’m not sure you would gain much by getting this lens unless you full frame. For aviation the equivalent of 900mm! focal length would be hard to control, and get sharp images. Now wildlife I guess is a different matter. If you find yourself sat for hours tripod mounted waiting for your subject maybe but bear in mind to get sharp images at that magnification you will need a much higher shutter speed, higher ISO and more noise. Sorry can’t help more. I have a 7D mki maybe I will give it a try.
For what it's worth, I shoot mostly birds, and I find it useful to have both this lens and a Tamron 100-400 F4.5-6.3 VC. Although there is some overlap in zoom range, I use the Tamron for hand-held shots, since it weighs almost a kilogram less. I keep the Sigma 150-600C on a tripod, for when I really need the extra reach. Both are fine lenses, and I've wondered about selling one of them , but I think they fulfil different roles.
I found my Canon 100-400 was not long enough for my bird photography so when the Sigma Sports 150-600 came out I bought it. A fantastic lens but I find it difficult to hand hold due to the weight so use it on a monopod or tripod. I have recently purchased a gimbal head but not yet used it. Focusing is lightning fast and it’s very sharp. I had sold my Canon lens but regretted it so bought the Tamron 100-400 which is also excellent but lighter for hand hold shots. I use the 7D mkII and 5D mkII and both lenses work well with them but the 7D II is my preferred wildlife body for distant subjects.
Tony, It’s a great lens but like you say very heavy. When I use this a for aviation I can be Hand holding for a good 5 hours or more with a few breaks but its still tiring. I found holding the weight in my hand and wrist was the worst part. This hand strap really helped. This is a link from the gear pages on my website. www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B07BJ6J7Q9/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1634&creative=6738&creativeASIN=B07BJ6J7Q9&linkCode=as2&tag=bnima-21&linkId=7946ef161206e016c08935942e6f9eaa
@@BrianNorthmorePhotography I have a similar hand strap but not tried it yet due to Covid. I also like aviation photography and regularly went to air shows throughout the country with my late best friend but unfortunately he passed away from cancer so I don’t do so much of it now. The Tamron 100-400 would be my choice for it as it is much more portable and taking the crop factor into account it works well. My trouble used to be carrying too much gear. I can also highly recommend the Sony HX400 bridge camera with its 24-1200mm lens. I have been a passionate photographer for 50 years and my personal standards are very high so when I bought it as a take anywhere camera I didn’t think it would be as good as it is. It surprised me how sharp the lens is. I can fill the frame with the moon and it’s very sharp. You can also take it places where a large DSLR’s would not be allowed such as football at Wembley Stadium.
Decided to buy the lens, probably with a 1.4 converter since that only costs another £100 if bought with the lens from some dealers (compared to about £250 if bought separately).
Peter Brackenbury Thanks for the info Peter. Did you buy it through my link? Maybe you could share some info on the converter and I can include it? And thank you for subscribing. 😀

Hi Mark, no I haven’t calibrated it. I have thought about it but I would probably tune the focusing using the adjustment in my camera. I haven’t noticed any Sharpness issues. But who knows if I calibrated maybe I would get better results? I am shooting on a 5D mk 4. Thanks for the sub! And glad you went for the lens. Wow with a 1.4 converter? Thats link 840mm !! please don't tell me a cropped sensor field of view would be equivalent to 1250mm. You shooting Moth on Mars LOL!!! New video out tomorrow!!
Nothing more than I would expect of a lens of this focal length and price range. I’ve not had any significant issues. But I guess it also depends how you are using the lens. Most of my images with this lens are aviation based. I am sure if I decided to shoot landscapes with it I would notice the issues more.
Great Review. Im a wildlife photographer and I use a Canon SL2 with Canon 70-200mm + 2X extender. It's sharp but just not enough zoom for wildlife so I'm looking into this lens. How do you think It would pair with my "beginner level body" canon sl2? Do you think I should get this new lens or get a sharper camera body? Thanks!
Beautiful video, I also an aviation photographer, I got Canon 5D MK IV and Sigma 150-600mm contemporary, I wonder, I getting something rejection from editors cause they claim that the subject is out of focus. Do you have any recommendations please? Settings on Camera or lens? I already did a calibration (from a RUclips video), it was hell, I had to do a restore to default. Thanks!
Anthony Thanks For Your Question. It's not just about setting up the lens. It's also about the camera, what settings are you using on your camera? This is a big heavy lens so shutter speed needs to be as high as it can be ideally 1/800s or faster. With the 5 Dmkiv don't be afraid to push the ISO up to get that shutter speed. You should also try and shoot between F8 and F11 most lenses will perform better in this range. I Set my camera AF up with AF point switching at 0, and Accel at maximum, can't remember the rest right now. If you are shooting prop aircraft and need a slower shutter speed I have sharp pictures of helicopters at 1/50s using a monopod. Most of my shots are handheld. try this hand strap, it makes the camera far more stable in your hand: www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B07BJ6J7Q9/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1634&creative=6738&creativeASIN=B07BJ6J7Q9&linkCode=as2&tag=bnima-21&linkId=7946ef161206e016c08935942e6f9eaa
Todd Wilhelm Thanks Todd, very kind. Are you an aviation photographer? I mainly show landscapes on my channel, but if that’s your think I would love have a few more comments from you on other videos. And if you like them thumbs up and new subscribers are always welcome.
Brian Northmore Photography I can’t say that I am, although I am an aviation fan having spent 34 years as an air traffic controller. I shoot mainly wildlife and landscapes.
I came in luck at my local camera shop 2 days ago 2nd hand/used but luckily enough the camera shop owner told me teh previous owner hardly used it its completely fresh no scruffs or scratches and proper clean the black is all really shiny new still the previous owner wants £795 for it thow plus the other reason why its more expensive because I have the converter with it which is included I think i have a good deal I will possibly hardly use the converter unless I am at a huge lake and they are far way
I have the same camera as you and the canon 100-400 mk 2. It’s a really great lens, but I often wish I had that bit more reach. Can’t afford it right now, so decision made, but something to think about in the future and your video is really helpful, especially the comparisons between contemporary and sport, weight being such a big factor. I do like bright days when I will use my 1.4 extender for the little birds.
Deb From what I have read and seen if you have the 100-400 I wouldn’t bother. It seems that the 100-400 is a cracking lens so good in fact the results may equal my 600 when zoomed in. I would guess if you use the 1.4 and push the iso up a stop or two it would match the 600 sigma. This is also unproven of course.
@@BrianNorthmorePhotography that’s good because the Sigma looks longer and even more difficult to cope with when extended. Size and weight really are an issue. My good too lens is my 24-105 for that reason.
Glad you found it useful Mark. But don't keep us all guessing you didn't say which I made your mind up!! Im guessing though you bought it? Sorry about not replying sooner... New video out tomorrow if your interested.

You know I don’t know! I think its an old Jessops one within a UniLoc ball head fitted on top bit of mashup, but to be honest, a monopod is a stick with a head on top! As long as it’s stuff enough it will do the job.
Great review. Im not really interested in photographing planes, I was more interested in wildlife. Seeing just how cumbersome this large lens is in a real life demonstration is very eye opening. Thanks for showing that. Also the single point focus is a good tip. Im new to interchangeable lens cameras so doing a lot of research. Is there something you’d recommend if you were carrying the lens hand held? Ill be using a crop sensor mirrorless camera. Great bird photos! Forgot to say that.

LtDan61350 Now that not easy to answer! It’s bit of Heinz 57, the monopod itself is about 30yrs old, and was the cheapest own brand Jessops on the shelf at the time, the ball head appeared about 15yrs latter and came off my old uniloc tripod. Well you did ask! It’s yours for £599.00 😂 It works very well I would never spend much on a monopod after all it’s a stick With head on it!
Thanks for the in depth review. I bought this lens in January and used it on birds this spring and summer and it turned out some sharp photos. I did have some photos that were not sharp so I decided to do a calibration and at 100 ft it was out of focus at 250mm, 400mm and 600mm. So i was looking for some videos that would give me some idea why this is happening . I'm wondering if there is camera shake even though i used the timer on the camera to activate the shutter. If you have any ideas I would love to hear them. Thanks again for the video.
Camera shake is possible even with the self timer. It depends on the whole set up not just one element of it. You need a good sturdy triood, locked down. Make sure you mount it using the lens collar. Turn off image stabilisation, use mirror lock Up or live view. Be very precise with your focusing depth of field is tiny at 600mm then give it a go. Maybe start shooting at 1/600s or closest above this and work your way down. Keep aperture and focus the same so correct exposure with ISO and see what you get. Off course very high ISO may soften the image. Good luck let me know how you get on. Rgds, Brian.
Great review. For some time I was thinking about this kind of lens within this focal range to try some wildlife photos, which I normally don't do. I didn't want to invest in a really expensive lens only to use sometimes and so I was thinking about this Sigma or the Tamron 150-600 G2. For the moment I've put this idea aside because I'm thinking about changing or buying another camera to carry around every day, I would use it more than a lens like this. We'll see :-)
Yes indeed when cost and how much you would use it a super telephoto is an expensive investment, that’s what I went for this lens - no regrets with my purchase. But if you have other things to buy that may use more, then possibly you could consider hiring a lens for Those one of events?
@@BrianNorthmorePhotography Exactly, that was my idea as well. Maybe I can just plan a weekend of wildlife photography and rent the lens, saving the money for what I know I'll use more.
Lee you would be horrified. It’s a real Heinz 57. TBH I don’t bother with expensive monopods it’s basically a stick with a head on top. I use old probably 30 year old Jessops own brand and a ball head from a 20 year old uniloc. I’m looking at changing my tripod at the end of the year and like three legged thing products at the moment. If you want to go cheaper maybe look at K&F concept. Personally I like to use a ball head to give me some freedom of movement. Sorry I couldn’t be of more help. Enjoy the lens and hope you find what you are looking for.
Do you find it’s sharper if you back it off a bit to say 500mm? I have the older version of the Sigma 150-500 lens and that seems sharper If backed off a bit!
To be honest, Lloyd I have not done any comparisons. But I would expect to find the same, a large number of lenses would work in this way. the only thing I would say is at 600mm compared to 500mm a slightly quicker shutter speed may help if what you were seeing was induced by camera shake.
Thanks for the review. I have had this lens for about 2 years, I have had some good results, but the weight kills me every time, not just when you are using it but also in my kit bag. Have been debating what to do next, gimbal head, monopod or trade-in for 100-400mm or similar. Your advice has really helped. Definitely going to try the monopod..! :)
Ray Clarke I think it depends what you use the lens for. Monopod is a good cheap option as a starting point though, And not to heavy to carry. Hope it works out for you as it is a cracking lens and it would be. A shame if you couldn’t get the use out of it. Good luck.
Monopod works well. I have the sports version which is even heavier which I bought for my bird photography . I sold my Canon 100-400 but immediately regretted it. I have since bought the Tamron 100-400 which is much lighter and still an excellent lens for hand held shots.
I used this lens with a canon 7d mkii for a year and just sold it. Photographing wildlife it is a great lens with the 600mm reach at this price however it just wasn't super sharp fully extended at 600mm which drove me crazy and ultimately caused me to sell it. Just picked up a canon 100-400mm mkii to replace it and while it's 200mm shorter, the extra sharpness more than makes up for it in my opinion
It’s a shame you had a bad experience with the lens. I have not tried it with mine, so interested to see if you have calibrating it a go before you sold it. I guess you also get what you pay for and as I said in my video, I use it for aviation but that’s not my primary subject. So I can’t justify spending more. To be honest on a crop sensor camera I wouldn’t have bothered with this lens for aviation. Glad your pleased with the canon. I have the 75-300 which I carry for landscapes and love it!
It's ashame Canon raised the prices on the Mk II because they released the RF version. It's hard to find used under $1500 now. I've heard sharpness is inconsistent, but for under $900, I'm ready to pounce
derbagger22 . Yes indeed a big shame! But you know this isn’t a bad lens. I think you’re probably right that people are getting mixed results. But you have to be careful I helped a photographer out a few weeks ago with this lens who was getting bad results. Nothing wrong with the lens, just needed a little help with his technique. So some reviews are a little unfair, careful which ones you trust. I get good results but I’m still thinking about calibrating the lens, this would probably sort most peoples issues.
@@BrianNorthmorePhotography yeah, that's what I've seen in reviews, too. Seems to be a question of technique, although quality control could be an issue. I saw one reviewer who had a sharper upper left corner than the right on a test pattern. I see Adorama is packaging the port for free so you can update. That and with filters for the same $899.
Rey Gab yes it is. As you are using a cropped sensor the field of view is effectively 1.5 x the focal length of the lens (225 - 900) that’s huge. Depending what you want it for.
Hi, yes it should be it a standard Canon fit lens. But I’m not a rep for canon or sigma so you should contact them or a good equipment retailer. Rgds, Brian.
Hardang Singh To be perfectly honest I have not compared them. I doubt very much if you would notice a massive difference. To do a fair comparison you would need to set sigma at 300mm and try it through the aperture range. If only needed 300mm I would use the canon anyway. It’s rare I use them both at the same time. There are other factors to consider like the weight of the lens I use the canon for landscape photography but I wouldn’t take the 600 on a hike and it use it for landscapes. I’m sorry I can’t help you more precisely with your answer. But it would be very wrong of me to draw a comparison on something I have not tested.
I think sigma could have designed a better mounting bracket with stronger materials. Heck, it may as well have been made of tin. I sold mine because of this and that the release/locking pin seemed to have expanded the recessed, alignment hole in the mounting bracket of the lens.
Joshua, I would love to be able to help you. But as I have not tried the other lens then it’s impossible for me to comment. Maybe there is a review comparing both somewhere? All I can say is that this lens is sharp enough for me.
What’s it like at the long end in low light ‘ ide say it as soft as butter ‘ get yourself a 600 prime ‘ it will cut your fingers is so sharp ‘ at the end of the day u want razor sharp photo
I’m not entirely sure. I have had a look and can’t find anything, I would say probably not but if you contact Sigma they should be able to help. I think maybe it we possible using some form of adaptor, but there would be something me drop in performance, thanks for watching and commenting
@@BrianNorthmorePhotography thank you Brian for replying, actually i have to purchase both , nobody is using this combo & dropped an email to sigma thrice but no answer , thats is the reason to ask you & others who has good knowledge & experience about camera & lenses 😊😊😊

@@ThomasSielaff happy to see this comment 😎 I have the D7500 as well and Just got this lens in addition to the 100-400 Sigma, which I like very much. Any tips?
Please share your opinions Should i buy Sigma 100-400mm contemporary lens for Sony e mount or Sigma 150-600 contemporary lens with Mc11 adapter I'm planning to have wildlife pictures videos and also some of the other things from the real life please guys also share your opinions thank you so much And thank you for the video before that i was planning to buy sigma 100-400mm but after this video honestly I'm little confused lol .....
This is a really difficult question. And as I’m not a Sony user I hope some others chip in. I think maybe for wildlife the 600 would be better for you with the extra 200mm reach. I’m so then it will come down to the adaptor and if that has any impact on optical or focusing performance. Sorry not really an answer but hopefully others can help you more. Maybe it’s possible to hire each for a weekend and try them out?

@@LiamPattisonPhotography that’s good news!
Excellent lens at least the Sport version, heavy but quality for a decent price, just wish the aperture was a bit faster and constant.
Yes indeed. But that’s where the price trade off comes, you can almost add 1k per F stop at this sort of focal length.
I have the older one of these - the 150-500, but I like it so much that I'm ordering the 150-600 for another body as its also a slight step up from the 150-500.
Thanks for your practical review of this lens. Most useful suggestions for me were:
Using a hand strap to spread the weight when using hand held.
I also have a second hand 100-400mm mark 1 version and probably will enjoy using them both.
ive been looking into buying the 100-400mm mark 1 but after some research ive decided to go for the sigma 150-600mm instead!
Glad you like it!
I just got My copy....been crappy miserable weather this week but next week looks to be ideal for initiation time!
Have fun!
Brilliant review - thank you. I guessed the answer to the 'shall I keep it' question during the last sequence of still bird shots - and I was right! I too, have this lens on a cropped sensor Canon camera and I wouldn't get rid of it either.
Wow cropped sensor! That’s about 960mm equivalent field of view
Thanks for the review Brian. I have been looking to improve my wild life pictures and been handicapped by the lack of reach. Your excellent review has made my mind up to get this lens.

Thanks Jeremiah, it’s nice to know that other photographers have had similar experience and come to the same conclusion
I've had this lens for several months, and though the weight was somewhat daunting at first, I use a shoulder strap to help mitigate that. I can now shoot with it for a couple of hours without difficulty. It gets amazing shots of wildlife, which is why I bought it.
Theo Fenraven Thank you for your comment Theo maybe you could share some details on the shoulder strap?
@@BrianNorthmorePhotography I ordered it at Amazon, and when I looked for the link, I was told it was currently unavailable. :( Just search on camera shoulder strap and you should find similar items.
Don’t bother going tomorrow to get one. Get one today! Struggled with a Canon 100/400 for ten years plus and never had a shot as good as this lens. The prime snobs will say it’s not so sharp but don’t listen to them because its nite and day better than the Canon. Trust me you won’t regret getting this lens.
Thanks for you comment Tom. Indeed it is a great lens.
Greetings from across the pond, Portland, OR USA. Thank you Brian, I was looking into this lens for that extra reach for Wild Life photography. Thank you for this video very excellent!

Great video Brian , really easy to listen too. Ilike how you explain everything so simple . My passion in photography is Motorsport
I have the sigma 150 500mm and it has served me so well the question i would like to ask is should i upgrade , will i see a difference in my photographs.

Thanks for your comment input Chezler. Glad you are enjoying the videos! Maybe think about subscribing?

Thanks Ross glad you enjoyed the video and your lens
good vid mate.
Thanks for your comment. I may have try the ISS at some point.
Thanks Dennis. Im not sure I would carry it 10.5 Miles, but I guess that depends what else your carrying!

I liked this video as it was informative! I intend to buy Sigma 60-600 sports lens. What do you think about Video-Head instead of a gimble?
Hi Vimal it depends on what you want to use it for. If you just need to pan or tilt one axis at a time then it will be fine. But if you need greater freedom wildlife, aviation etc I think a gimbal would be better.

Thanks Damien, your subscription is very much appreciated. I’m also on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter, if you would like to see a portfolio of my work check out my website.
Rgds,
Brian.
Thanks for sharing glad you like the lens
Great review. This lens is on my list (to pair with my mk4 so exactly what I needed)
Gavin Forster Hi, thanks for watching and commenting. Not sure what genre(s) of photography you are into but would be great to see you around on a few more of my videos. I’m always keen to answer questions and reply

Excellent review, thanks!
Thanks for watching and commenting!
@@BrianNorthmorePhotography thanks Brian it’s a big help 🙏
Pleasure. Great to have you on board with the channel. Did you watch my videos on Garden bird photography?
For what it's worth, I shoot mostly birds, and I find it useful to have both this lens and a Tamron 100-400 F4.5-6.3 VC. Although there is some overlap in zoom range, I use the Tamron for hand-held shots, since it weighs almost a kilogram less. I keep the Sigma 150-600C on a tripod, for when I really need the extra reach. Both are fine lenses, and I've wondered about selling one of them , but I think they fulfil different roles.
Wonderful review. I am considering this lens. You may have convinced me!
Oh Crikey!! I love it. Now Im feeling the pressure 😂

Haven't got the lens yet, hope to get it within the next few weeks. Will let you know how the converter performs.

Thanks for the review...1) did you buy the sigma doc and calibrate your lens? ( mine seems soft) 2) can you post some bird pictures you shot with lens? thanks for you help...I am just struggling with sharpness issues-tripod, 1/1000 @f8 canon 80d crop sensor
Hi Mark, no I haven’t calibrated it. I have thought about it but I would probably tune the focusing using the adjustment in my camera. I haven’t noticed any Sharpness issues. But who knows if I calibrated maybe I would get better results? I am shooting on a 5D mk 4. The pics in these two videos were shot tripod mounted in the second video I go through my set up, maybe this will help you

And glad you went for the lens. Wow with a 1.4 converter? Thats link 840mm !! please don't tell me a cropped sensor field of view would be equivalent to 1250mm. You shooting Moth on Mars LOL!!!
New video out tomorrow!!
Superb video thank you so much! But i wanted to know, is there any chromatic aberration issues? Thank you for this video!
Nothing more than I would expect of a lens of this focal length and price range. I’ve not had any significant issues. But I guess it also depends how you are using the lens. Most of my images with this lens are aviation based. I am sure if I decided to shoot landscapes with it I would notice the issues more.
@@BrianNorthmorePhotography i shoot birds on flight so i guess its pretty much similar thank so much
Great Review. Thanks!
Thanks for watching. I can’t see any reason why it wouldn’t work fine. Obviously without having used this combination, this is only an opinion.
@@BrianNorthmorePhotography Ok. Thank you!

Great review Brian and after watching many reviews you've just mad my mind up for me..Many Thanks

Had this lens for a bit and trying to get better at using it, this was a great video, which monopod are you using out of curiosity ?

@@sergiomesa555 Gracias Sergio, entonces ya compraste el sigma 150-600mm, que tal es la nitidez a las diferentes distancias focales?
What monopod do you have? I like the look of the vertical movement that one has.
Turn off image stabilisation, use mirror lock
Up or live view.
@@BrianNorthmorePhotography Thanks Brian, I will give those ideas a try. I am going to try a remote release also. Great Channel
Thanks Mike, very kind. Glad your enjoying the videos. Any more questions ask away. I prefer remote releases.
But if you have other things to buy that may use more, then possibly you could consider hiring a lens for
Those one of events?
@@BrianNorthmorePhotography Exactly, that was my idea as well. Maybe I can just plan a weekend of wildlife photography and rent the lens, saving the money for what I know I'll use more.
Hi what monopod do you use I’ve just purchased this lens so just would like to know if you don’t mind
Nice video !
Thanks Derek
Bazooka!! Enjoyed that Brian 👍👍- cheers, T 🙂
Tony Noble Thank’s... It’s bit of a weapon, nearly taken a few spectators heads out at airshows lol. Great Lens though love using it.
Awesome video! Thank you!
No problem a pleasure glad you enjoyed and hope you stick around for some more
Do you find it’s sharper if you back it off a bit to say 500mm?
Thank you..nice job.
No problem always a pleasure, glad to have you on the channel any questions ask. And hope to see your comments on some more videos.
Thanks Brian..I have just ordered a used 7D2 and new Sigma 150 - 600mm C lens. Looking forward to using them.
Hi Brian ,does this lens compatible to Canon 90D..???...thank you
Rey Gab yes it is. As you are using a cropped sensor the field of view is effectively 1.5 x the focal length of the lens (225 - 900) that’s huge. Depending what you want it for.
Hi Brian I need to know if this lens is compatible with canon 6d mark ii
Hi, yes it should be it a standard Canon fit lens. But I’m not a rep for canon or sigma so you should contact them or a good equipment retailer.
Rgds, Brian.
@@BrianNorthmorePhotography thanks a lot for replying 🙏🏻
How does the sharpness compare between the canon 300 and this lens?
Hey will that’s a shame you had so many problems. Mine is still going strong.
