I had this lens also traded it for the canon 100x400 mark 2 it is a great lens but I wish I had my sigma back miss the extra focal length. That extra 200mm makes a lot of difference. Thanks for the review.
I purchased this lens after using a Canon 100-400mm for years, and I was blown away at the results in post! It’s so much fun to use, yes it’s heavier, but I’m getting use to it. I paired it on a Canon 7d2, with battery grip….so I’m sporting about 6 pounds, but I’ve decided the results outweigh the weight! Pun intended!
Thank you! I love Sigma products and have never been disappointed in one, if there is ever anything I can review in the future I'd be more than happy if you send it my way to do a review on.
With only having a 70-300mm lens its very difficult to get close shots and what not, but I make do. I've had my eye on this lens for a while now just have to start saving for the lens haha!
Got mine coming in 10 days using the same adapter as you on my Lumix s5 and I’ll be using it on my Canon m6 mk ii as well. I got into wildlife photography when I first started 5 years ago but when I stopped using bridge cameras and started using DLSR I couldn’t afford it. Luckily Amazon offered it at a monthly payment over 12 months ( I could buy it outright but prefer to pay monthly with no interest ). Thank you for the video, I wish you did state the camera and adapter as I have been looking for a lumix paired with these two things. Again thank you.
That’s awesome! I hope you enjoy using it! I use a Sigma MC-21 adapter for my EF to L mount translation, ive talked about it in a different video but not this one
Thanks for the review, as prime lenses are awfully expensive these days :). I've been using this lens for wildlife for about 18 months; like you, I've been happy with the results. I use a mix of auto-focus and manual focus, with manual necessary in low light. But on a sunny day, the auto-focus works well. I shoot on a crop sensor body (M6 II). With a 32 megapixel sensor and an effective reach of 960 mm, there's room to crop, and I've felt no need for a teleconverter. I've had no problems with edge effects, perhaps because only the centre of the lenses is seen by the crop sensor? Although I bought the M6 II mostly for video work, it's turned out to be surprisingly useful for birds, and I think I can comfortably recommend it. For larger birds or hand-held applications, I also use a 100-400 mm zoom (Tamron 4.5-6.3 VC). Thanks again.
That’s great! Glad you’ve been enjoying it ☺️ Sigma is known to build good corner sharpness in their lenses so what you’re seeing is true! And 960mm is plenty enough I agree, probably even more than needed in some scenarios haha
@@Ashikdepthfulframes_media I found it necessary, but mostly at dusk. I've since upgraded to the R7 with the RF 100-500 mm, and the autofocus is excellent even in dim light. I'm not sure how much of this is due to the camera body vs the lens.
I've had this lens for almost a year myself and I friggin love it. Low light is a bit of a struggle some times with an original 7D, but the image quality and length is amazing for the price. One of my personal favorite features is the ability to push/pull zoom - sometimes I prefer to push zoom if I'm trying to get in tight on short notice.
I mean no disrespect to anyone but it’s nice seeing a review of this lens from someone who is actually skilled in wildlife photography. I consider myself to be pretty good at this point but most of the reviews I’ve seen, I don’t think they do this lens justice because the photos taken are very mid. Thanks for showing us the true capabilities of this lens!
Let the work of others inspire you rather than discourage you. It’s because of you, I ended up getting the Sigma 150-600mm lens instead of the Lumix 100-400mm. I had also ended up getting the bag for it. I’ve already gotten multiple pics of a mating pair of Red-Tailed Hawks in the max 600mm zoom. Hopefully after the pandemic, I’ll be able to go to Hays Bald Eagle nesting site to take advantage of capturing freedom.
That's awesome Kyle! I'm glad you've enjoyed that Sigma and I'm glad I was able to help push you that way over the 100-400. Bet those were some fun moments to capture, hope you get to capture those Bald Eagles soon!
I just bought this lens for my Nikon D3200. It will arrive Sunday (allegedly) and I can't wait to use it. I live in Maine and there are plenty of bald eagles in the area. I am anxious to use the lens to try for a great shot(s) of eagles.
Definitely one I was looking at buying. Weight is an definite issue for me so this review was great info. I think I'll still rent it just to feel for myself
Most definitely, is a smart decision to do so! It’s honestly very light though for a FF lens so unless you’re going to a smaller mount it’s hard to get much lighter
thanks for a great review and I agree with all you ve said. Im loving this lens and the focal ring is really well placed and so smooth. I love the weight and the balance as I ve not yet used a tripod and yet have done some great photos and film footage. A cracking lens.
Cracking video Jeremy I also just purchased this lens for my Wildlife. I hope to do a review in the coming months after I beat it up a bit. It's also in my opinion the best Wildlife lens under 3k.
As a user of this lens I absolutely love it, and when you buy it for £950 you get a 1.4x teleconverter which it. For wildlife it doesn’t get any better even by todays available lenses at this price.
Yes especially as most companies improve their products slightly then add a huge price increase. A back in the day DSLR vs a current day beginner mirrorless has huge difference in prices, phones are the same. Which makes such a lens so much more meaningful on a budget
Hi, Jeremy, and thanks for a great review of the Sigma 150-600. Your review has been helpful. I will be renting the lens before deciding to purchase. I enjoy wildlife photography, esp birding, and some sports photography. I will be using the Canon EOS R5 with the lens. Looking forward to more of your great videos.
iniatially check your video because i wanted to see how big the lens actually looks when is handle, but your explanation make me to stay. thank you for the time taken to inform us.
Nice review Jeremy. I’ve had mine since they first came out. I’ve never had a problem with mine, and it is well used. Great value for me at its price point. The only small con that I have is, I am prone to moving some of the switches when I am carrying it in the field. So I cover the switches with gaffers tape. It works for me. Have a good one.👍👍
Couldn't agree more, an outstanding value for the price point! And yea that's a clever move if you struggle with accidentally hitting them. Take care Terry!
Any insights on your IBIS settings in Lumix and/or Sigma lens would be greatly appreciated. It doesn't seem to be Dual stabilization, so, how are you approaching image stabilization? Thanks,
Hi Jeremy, thanks for the great review, I love your passion. I have the Canon EOS R6 and I can't decide whether to save for the Canon RF 100-500mm or to purchase the Sigma 150-600 C. I shoot wildlife and not much else so just wondered if you had the choice (and the money) what one of these you would get? I have been struggling with this decision for about a month now so any help/advice would be really appreciated. Thanks in advance
Thanks Kelly! Personally, if the price were the same, I would choose the Sigma 150-600 still unless amazing AF is super important to you, then I would maybe purchase the Canon RF 100-500 instead. However, since the prices are drastically different, I think it's a pretty big no brainer to get the Sigma but that's my personal opinion! Canon overprices everything (especially their lenses), and consumers often pay double the actual value. Choosing a third-party brand like Sigma which has a proven track record of great quality will be much more worth the money! Personally, Sigma is my favorite lens brand and I own 3 of their lenses, 2 Canon lenses, and 5 Lumix lenses.
@@JeremyNeipp Thank you for taking the time to respond it’s really appreciated. Looks like I will be treating myself to the sigma lens! Thanks again, have a great day and keep up the awesome videos 😁
Thanks, I’m looking at sigma an Tamron, I have a Tamron 100-400 mm , but I want my reach , my one drawback is weight, but I use tripod or mono pad anyway, I’m old Thanks
Hi Jeremy, thanks for the review I am looking at buying this lens, most reviews on it are with full frame cameras, I have a Canon 80D crop sensor, would you recommend putting this type on lens on a crop sensor
I would! With a crop sensor you’ll get even that much more reach out of it. It’s an amazing lens for the price and you really can’t get much better until you get in the 2.5k plus range
Definitely just depends on your budget! Bang for buck id say the Sigma C is definitely more worth it, but, if you have the money and want to get a tiny bit more quality, then go for the Tamron 🙌🏻
Glad you found it helpful! In terms of your question it’s honestly personal preference, I don’t worry about it and am just careful not to damage my lenses, but if you’re concerned about it then go for it!
Hey João! Thank you! I haven't but I did lots of research on it and for me, it wasn't worth double the price, it only seemed very slightly sharper from all the tests I saw and the only other bonus is that it's weather sealed.
@@JeremyNeipp Hi Jeremy, sorry to ask you one more question, but as I hold you in high regard so I ask you questions :) Do you know the Sony A7RIV and A9 cameras? Which of these would you choose for wildlife, macro and landscape photography? Best regardes
No problem! Personally, I would go with the A7RIV almost always. Really the only perks in my opinion to the A9 is the rare occasion where I would need incredibly fast burst rates (but I’ve gotten along with lower for a long time now) or if I really needed just a little better low light performance. Otherwise in my mind, the A7RIV wins in pretty much every other way and is cheaper by a decent amount too.
How do you use manual focus on wildlife? I thought about it the other day but when a bird is flying towards me and I start shooting how am I supposed to focus it so quickly for each shot?
Which category is best for wildlife whether sports or contemporary . Please guide us . And another one Sir . One dought is this Sigma both lens are compatible for EOS R series . Another one it's compatible means for which body is compatible and best . Can you guide us Sir
Sports is definitely better, but the real question is what is better for the price. In my opinion, the contemporary is far more worth its price than the sports.
Hey Jeremy, thanks for the great review! I just purchased a Sigma 100-400 with a native L-mount but now that I've seen your enthusiasm, I think I'll also get this one and send the other one back. Have you tried it with autofocus on your Lumix S-body (via the MC-21 adapter)? I have an S1H and want to use the lens for stills and video and was wondering if autofocus is any worth. I'm a manual focus shooter mainly but since I'm just getting into wildlife photography, I'm wondering how one manages that without mega fast autofocus. Any tips and comments are much appreciated!
Hey Ivan! I have and my Panasonic S1R with the Sigma 150-600mm is actually my main wildlife photography setup now. In all honesty, with the adaptation that I use between the two with the MC-21, the autofocus is still slow. However, if you are already used to manual focusing, I would say just put in the little bit extra work to learn it in wildlife photography as well and you should be golden. I only shoot manual focus with my Sigma 150-600mm, and because of that, I think undeniably this lens is the best bang for you buck, but the AF is the only part that doesn't hold up to the standard. I think if you got the Sigma 150-600mm and went out in the field practicing MF you'd probably get it down pretty quick if you are already used to it. If you decide to go for it let me know!
Jeremy, Thanks for the highlighting the key factors considering for buying a super telephoto lens. Would you recommend it combining with Canon EOS 90D? What’s your thoughts?
@@JeremyNeipp I got the lens and its insane! the build quality is way better than I expected, and the autofocus is ridiculous fast. and ofcourse I came from a 300mm lens and now I have 600mm so I can get the birds and animals way bigger in frame!
Hi Jeremy. was it the sports version of Sigma that you tried? Did you also try the Tamron 250-600mm G2? of these two lenses do you prefer Sigma? Its better for wildlife photography? I'm doubt in this two lens what i buy Thanks a lot Best regards
Hey João! The one I reviewed was the contemporary lens, you can see the link to the product in the bio to see more specs on it. In terms of the Tamron or Sigma, the Sigma 150-600 beats out the Tamron 150-600 anyday in my opinion! The IQ is distinctly sharper on the Sigma and in my opinion, the color accuracy is better too. Hope that helps!
I haven't tried the sport, but from the reviews and comparisons I've seen, the sport is most definitely even a little bit better... however, its also double the price, so for me it was too minimal an upgrade to spend the extra money.
Great review :) TY. I did get mine for $899 Dec. 21.... Oh, and I don't think you said, "This is the "C" contemporary version. They also make a S sport version, which is quite a bit heavier, and a good chunk more expensive, but I'm not sure that it makes better images. Many reviews say it doesn't.
Thank you! Glad it was helpful. I have the new Sport version too for L Mount and it's quite a lot better (but also pricier), however, the Canon EF Sport version is not that much better in what I've seen you're right.
I might have missed it, but I don't think I did. You don't say if it is the Contemporary or Sport model, other reviewers have done this as well. I checked out your link to purchase it and my suspicions of it being a Contemporary was confirmed.
Amazing review!! I got this lens since 2014, I wonder the OS should be on off or on 2? I shoot aircraft and something military vessels and the Moon. Thanks!!
To be honest it’s a little overkill for portrait photography! Unless you are talking about animal portraits then it’s perfect. But for people it’s not a great choice, it’s a little too much focal length
Would you be able to get hold of the Sigma 60 - 600mm lens and compare the 2 on FF & the G9 for a video? both are Canon EF mount so I'd like to see the 60 - 600mm on the G9?
If I ever get the chance to get my hands on it I'll definitely put one up! Unfortunately the local camera shop I rent from doesn't carry the 60-600mm though.
Hey man ! I have a Sony A33 and this is my dream lens do you know if they possibly make it in an A mount or if there is some sort of adapter out to there to convert my A type to a canon ef etc ...
Hey Shaun! Unfortunately I don't know of one that does A to EF... There are plenty of Sony E mounts to EF or other types but I don't know personally about an A adapter.
That’s awesome man! A plethora of tips and tricks but like anything else just commit yourself to learning the ins and outs of your gear and where it’s strong and weak and everything else you should continue to grow in! Hope you enjoy it! Let me know how you like it when you get it!
Interesting that you are fine with the focus ring, i think its much too stiff and too small. I am used to the RF 800 F11 and EF 100-400 II focus rings, these are GREAT and big with nice grip, the Sigma is horrendous to manual focus, also much too sensible to nail focus good enough. I am also wondering how you can see this wobbly clip as "good stabilized", coming from RF 800 F11 i was used to very good stabilizer already with IBIS, even the adapted EF 100-400 glass is MUCH BETTER STABILIZED than the adapted sigma. At least on the R7 the stabilizer is bad and i really have to rely on a tripod with this lens (but the optical stabilizer compensate the rest of the wobble and movement very good on a lightweight/crappy tripod at least, but unusable for video handheld in my opinion, probably 120fps+ slow mo is usable but thats it)
but despite the heavy downsides for handheld video and the "bad" focus ring, its also my favorite widllife lens, too versatile on APS-C with its 240-960mm at Canon bodies. The 100-400 II 5.6 is often too short, even on APS-C, but a lot better for macro (0,9m MFD vs 2,5m), lighter, very nice stabilized (nearly or at panasonic level) and the 100mm on the short end are especially a charme on full frame. But the 150-600mm are a pretty much unbeatable focal lenght range, only the 60-600 is better but lets be honest, that is again about 2x the weight of the 150-600, just NO (beside the high price) Funny thing is... basically ONLY Sigma lenses were the best value for its money in my collection, the 150-600 is absolutely no exception, probably even the best value sigma lens beside some smaller macro primes.
I have!! I’ll include a link to a video I did below on it... honestly it turned out amazing results. And the adapter I used to get from the G9 to the Sigma 150-600 is all included in links in the description, they adapt to the specific type of Sigma that I linked.
@@JeremyNeipp I found your G9 Sigma 150 600 video, thanks. I understand the benefit of the almost 2 stops with the speed booster, but I have that covered with my Lumix 100 400. I am after a longer focal length. I was wondering how it would fair with the Metabones Smart T adapter. No gain in f stop but you keep the full 600 mm. With the 1.4x converter, would this be practical? 600 X 1.4 = 840 mm (1680mm equiv) lens at f. 9. . Would this be practical?
So the Sigma 150-600 with the speed booster adapted goes down to a 4.0 f-stop, so it gets lower light then your Leica 100-400mm which I why I recommended it that way... however, doing the smart adapter wouldn’t be a bad option at all either! Personally, since MFT struggles a little more with low light I like the idea of getting two extra stops of light but that’s my opinion. I would say however, that if you keep the full 600mm focal distance, I wouldn’t get the teleconverter cause you are losing just too much light at that point. For the MFT line, you start to really limit your low light capabilities once you’re over that f/8 line in my opinion.
@@JeremyNeipp yes, I did have this lens with the GH4. It worked okay ish with the GH4 and the 1.4x converter (f9) Auto focus was a bit slow. But I can work around that. I chopped it in for the Lumix 100 400, but I am thinking of getting it again. They are selling it here for £949 with the 1.4x converter included. So I just wanted to check that it worked okay with the G9. If you have the 1.4x converter could you please do a quick check for me to see if this works on the G9 with auto focus? Thank you.
If you are not travelling then you can have all you're kit with you. But if weight is an issue then the Sigma 600-600mm really makes sense. But where the 60-600mm Sigma really shines is that it's one the few camera lenses that is "Parfocal" meaning it retains perfect focus at all zooms levels. A necessity for shooting high-end video. The Sigma 150-600mm sport is NOT PARFOCAL so if you shoot video this is not the sense for you. All Cine Lenses are par focal but Cinema lenses are quite expensive for this reason. Understand that more than 90% of the photography lenses by Canon, Nikon and yes Sony are not parfocal because the cost to make it that way. Some lens come close to being parfocal but be careful because if you are not paying attention you can get burnered by that almost perfect focus. For critical work keep it parfocal. Also even if you are not much of a videographer having the focus still perfect even though you have zoomed in and out is a boon for nature photographers.
In my opinion it’s not unless you really need it! You’re paying double the price compared to the contemporary lens, in terms of Image Quality, it’s a very slight upgrade, and the only other big change is the weather sealing... personally, I’ve taken my contemporary version out in the rain multiple times and it’s always been okay, however, it’s never been heavy rain. So don’t take my word on it, that’s just my experience
@@JeremyNeipp Thanks I have been reading other reviews since posting and they agree with what you say so will stick to getting the Contemporary Thnanks for a very informative video
You use manual focus so the auto focus is not a big deal for you but at times you have has it been a problem because that seems to be the biggest issue I've heard. I uesa canon t7. For me living on pension even a 1000 dollars is a big thing and I really would have to be very sure before even considering any lend I have to longer lenses a canon 75-300mm and a Jintu 420 800 8.3 manual
Most definitely, it’s because I shoot all manual focus so I tend to not review AF in some of my videos... the focus speed is relatively slow you’re right, but I don’t ever use it so it doesn’t matter to me. Hope that helps confirm your question!
I’ve bought a lot of Sigma lenses and every single one has been tack sharp in its IQ, I also like how they build lenses extra wide for good corner sharpness. I’ve bought Tamron lenses that have disappointed me greatly and had bad experiences with the IQ in sharpness and fringing

Seems like i need this. For my full frame cam
As a user of this lens I absolutely love it, and when you buy it for £950 you get a 1.4x teleconverter which it.
For wildlife it doesn’t get any better even by todays available lenses at this price.
Glad you could agree! Still holds up to today's standard on a budget which is crazy

Kudos for the great video!
Thank you!
Any insights on your IBIS settings in Lumix and/or Sigma lens would be greatly appreciated. It doesn't seem to be Dual stabilization, so, how are you approaching image stabilization? Thanks,
Great review, thank you Jeremy
Thank you so much! Glad it helped.
I love Sigma Lens, I have been using this one to take photos to hummingbirds, and, I was surprised how well this lens performed.
It’s a great lens on a decent budget! Glad to hear you’ve been loving your experience with it!

Haha for sure! Thanks man ☺️
Hi Jeremy, thanks for the review I am looking at buying this lens, most reviews on it are with full frame cameras, I have a Canon 80D crop sensor, would you recommend putting this type on lens on a crop sensor
I would! With a crop sensor you’ll get even that much more reach out of it. It’s an amazing lens for the price and you really can’t get much better until you get in the 2.5k plus range
Between Sigma 150-600 c vs tamron 150-600 mm g2 lens, which one you will recommend?
Definitely just depends on your budget! Bang for buck id say the Sigma C is definitely more worth it, but, if you have the money and want to get a tiny bit more quality, then go for the Tamron 🙌🏻
@@JeremyNeipp thank you for you advice

Thanks for this review. Do you recommend using a UV or any other filter to protect the lens?
Glad you found it helpful! In terms of your question it’s honestly personal preference, I don’t worry about it and am just careful not to damage my lenses, but if you’re concerned about it then go for it!

Hi Jeremy, great video? Have you tried the sport version of this sigma 150-600 lens? What is your opinion?

Hey João! Thank you! I haven't but I did lots of research on it and for me, it wasn't worth double the price, it only seemed very slightly sharper from all the tests I saw and the only other bonus is that it's weather sealed.

@@JeremyNeipp Hi Jeremy, sorry to ask you one more question, but as I hold you in high regard so I ask you questions :)
Do you know the Sony A7RIV and A9 cameras?
Which of these would you choose for wildlife, macro and landscape photography?
Best regardes
No problem! Personally, I would go with the A7RIV almost always. Really the only perks in my opinion to the A9 is the rare occasion where I would need incredibly fast burst rates (but I’ve gotten along with lower for a long time now) or if I really needed just a little better low light performance. Otherwise in my mind, the A7RIV wins in pretty much every other way and is cheaper by a decent amount too.

@@JeremyNeipp I pulled the trigger on that lens. Can't wait to get my hands on it and start practising. Keep being an inspiration!

Its better for wildlife photography?
I'm doubt in this two lens what i buy

@@JeremyNeipp thanks a lot
You did try Sigma 150-600 Sport?
Whats your opinion the version Sport its better than Contemporary?
Thanks
I haven't tried the sport, but from the reviews and comparisons I've seen, the sport is most definitely even a little bit better... however, its also double the price, so for me it was too minimal an upgrade to spend the extra money.
@@JeremyNeipp thanks a lot 👍
what are you doing with this lens when it starts to rain a little bit?
Great review :) TY. I did get mine for $899 Dec. 21.... Oh, and I don't think you said, "This is the "C" contemporary version. They also make a S sport version, which is quite a bit heavier, and a good chunk more expensive, but I'm not sure that it makes better images. Many reviews say it doesn't.
Thank you! Glad it was helpful. I have the new Sport version too for L Mount and it's quite a lot better (but also pricier), however, the Canon EF Sport version is not that much better in what I've seen you're right.
Great review, I just check the price on Amazon $899.00 which is fantastic
Glad you liked it! You won't find better than that price that you mentioned, amazing lens!

Depends on if it’s working with your camera body IBIS or not and if not, which IS is better! And Thanks for the compliment!
Hello thanks, what about this lens for outdoor portrait photography? I currently use Canon 70-300 but I'm curious going this 150-600
To be honest it’s a little overkill for portrait photography!

But the 150-600mm are a pretty much unbeatable focal lenght range, only the 60-600 is better but lets be honest, that is again about 2x the weight of the 150-600, just NO (beside the high price)
Funny thing is... basically ONLY Sigma lenses were the best value for its money in my collection, the 150-600 is absolutely no exception, probably even the best value sigma lens beside some smaller macro primes.
Great info, thanks. Have you tried this lens on the Pan G9. Does it pair okay with it? And what adapter did you use please?
I have!! I’ll include a link to a video I did below on it... honestly it turned out amazing results. And the adapter I used to get from the G9 to the Sigma 150-600 is all included in links in the description, they adapt to the specific type of Sigma that I linked.
@@JeremyNeipp Thanks Jeremy. Where is the video link you mentioned please?
Thank you.
Can a pair this with a canon rebel t7?
I have this lens sigma 600mm with sony crop sensor can I use 2x teleconverter !?
Can we use sigma 150-600 contemporary with canon m50 mark ii ?
Yes but I believe it needs an adapter if I remember correctly!
Thanks for the review. Are you using this with the S1R ? I didn't know there was an L-mount version, or are you using it with an adapter?

Is the "Sport" version worth paying the extra for to get the weather sealing?
In my opinion it’s not unless you really need it! You’re paying double the price compared to the contemporary lens, in terms of Image Quality, it’s a very slight upgrade, and the only other big change is the weather sealing... personally, I’ve taken my contemporary version out in the rain multiple times and it’s always been okay, however, it’s never been heavy rain.
