Thank you for taking an in-depth look at our new lens, Leigh!
This lens is my next purchase since I’ll be shooting college football this season!
Sony should learn from your new DG DN OS lenses, it's crazy yours look more like FE lenses than FE lenses themselves.
Just wanted to say I appreciate your detailed, real world reviews.
Sony 200-600 also supports teleconvertes and gives you a higher burst rate on faster camera models, like the A1.
its also sharper and the af is better.
@@m2n213 yep. Sony is the way to go, unless you favor the smaller size and closer minimal focus distance of the Sigma.
@@edc641 you don't usually favor the smaller size, you favor the flexibility, close focus distance, stabilizer and color over the sony because the sony has the worse stabilizer and focal length flexibility, plus sony's famous focus breathing akin to all their $1000+ lenses.
Comment was delayed so I could visit B&H website and order this lens. Now my L-mount covers the entire range of my Fuji setup. Between the RX10iv which covers the entire range in a single camera/lens for hiking and quick trips, and my L-mount for more serious photography, I am covered. Thanks for a terrific review.
This is a must have for my Leica SL2 and my Panasonic S5. I ordered one today after watching your review.
I haven't used this lens for L mount but I do own the full frame Sport model. I love the Sport lens but I'm getting older and as I have discovered and you will discover, things tend to get heavier over time, not lighter. I do own a Fuji camera and it would be nice to have a Fuji mount lens such as this in our lens purchase arsenal.
Would love to see this lens for Canon EF and/or RF mounts in the future.
Great review, thank you! I have an older sigma contemporary on my bottom-of-the-line nikon and it takes amazing pictures. Over 100,000 photos and it's still working perfectly.
Sigma just killed it with this sports lens for $1500 wow instant buy. Wonder how much the contemporary will be.
I’m getting this for my Lumix S1, the only thing I’m worried about is the focusing speed and if it can zoom and focus at the same time… not all lenses can do this. That was one of the advantages of my Fujifilm xf100-400.
I didn't do a dedicated test of zooming and focusing at the same time but I can say the lens kept up with me (and the camera) in terms of focusing speed.
I would be curious to know how it manages with the Af on the S1. Just because I only had bad experiences with Sigma lens and the S1 in terms of AF.
The Fuji 100 to 400 is a incredible lens ! And yes it's autofocus is superb even with the 1.4 teleconverter !
I bought the S5 and the Sigma 100-400 mm lens last September plus the TC-2011 teleconverter. It looks like I will trade in my lens for the 150-600mm lens. I wish I had an inkling that such a lens would become available.
I did the same thing. The 100-400 works good, but that extra 200mm is too good to pass up. Looks like I’ll be trading too.
@@Challengerscatpack50 same issue here...
Nice lens but for me as a Sony user the native 200-600 is the best. At 150mm the Sigma is smaller but when you begin to zoom the Sigma gets way longer and also the balance changes. Plus the amount you have to twist the zoom ring is to much. On my 200-600 I can zoom from 200 to 600 within 1/4 turn of the ring and the weight/balance never changes because the zoom is internal. Lastly having the zoom internal makes the Sony version alot more dust and rain proof.
Nice glass. Love the smooth looking bokeh. I’ll be sure to pick one up as soon as my kidney sale goes through and I get a Sony camera
Nice review as always. I bought the Sigma 150-600 for my Nikon Z 7 ll. It works great with my FTZ adapter. It was on sale at B&h Photo. I got the contempary So sharp.
Thanks, I'm a Sony shooter with the 200-600 Sony lens, so it's probably not for me, but does look relatively good. Eventually I can see me buying an a1 body and wonder how well this lens works on the a1 body for speed of focus vs the native Sony lens that I already own. I know you weren't able to look at that but wondered if anyone else had experience or a perspective on this?
Thank you for your calm unhyped review. Refreshing. I plan on purchasing the lens for a Nikon D500.
Do you like animals? Follow us 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
I saw it well. I recorded jet ski with this lens and it was a great lens.
i think the biggest draw to the sony 200-600mm g oss will the the autofocus. For sports or birds there should be noticeable differences and the native sony G lens should be able to have better tracking, acquisition and maybe framerates
I'm glad that you shot this on the r4 since that's what I currently have and really helps with the comparison. With that said, did you find the Sony lens to be faster and or more accurate than the Sigma? It seems that other reviewers have praised the Sigma across the board but it did miss more shots and was a bit slower due to the non native connection and I was wondering if this applied to you too. Thanks for any response.
Thanks for sharing... always enjoy your comments and reviews... looks a great lens however in Australia they cost over $2000 new & at the moment I cannot justify buying... maybe I can look at the s/h market..
Keep up the good work... cheers 😀
Hello Leigh! Thanks for that video. I’m going to pre-order it for my Leica SL2-S !
I am definitely buying either the sigma or the sony in the near future. I've owned third party lenses in the past and was always a bit disappointed with them over the native glass. Considering that I'm just a hobby photographer, the Sigma is probably "good enough" for my needs. I wonder if I should just spend the extra $500 and get the sony...
Get the Sony. It is not a pump!
Probably the best review I've viewed regarding the two lenses. One question I have, however, is how bulky the Sigma is when extended to 600mm handheld?
Great video!! I've been doing tons of research on this lens I'm going buy it soon, But I'm just curious why is your ISO so high for the sample photos? Thanks
I have already ordered this for my Lumix S5 in Australia. $1999.00 AUD currently at Camera House. Great review.
I've been waiting for a lens with this range since I purchased my Lumix S5. I'll definitely be saving my pennies for this one.
I've been waiting for this for L mount too! Love it!
Me too! I'll gladly sell my 100-400 to get this!!
@@LeighAndRaymond Leigh any chance Sigma would let you review their L Mount version seeing you are likely to purchase one. Look forward to your subsequent review after you receive it either way. Thanks
I don't think I'll have it again until it's my own copy. I don't think my thoughts will be much different than my thoughts on the E Mount version though - it's a great lens. :)
@@LeighAndRaymond I'd be interested to know if you have purchased the L-mount version of this lens. I would really like to see a real-world review after several weeks or months of use. Mount it on your Lumix S5 and let us know what you think! ;)
Thank you for the review, of the Sigma Lenses. Love the build quality of them. Really heavy built. Have the old version of Sport 150-600 . Will look into this one and other sport lenses that you will review..
great review! been taking a hard look at all these lenses
Hello great video as always. Just wondering, would this work on a Nikon Z6/7 using the Techart TZE-01 adaptor? I believe you have reviewed the adaptor before, but how would it work with the new sigma 150-600? Would be a great option for Nikon users if it works?
Just picked up the Sigma for e mount, thanks for your wonderful review 😃 I use a Sony a7siii
Looking forward to getting this lens for my S5!
Being not a pro, where my primary concern is portability, I’ll go for the Sigma (vs the Sony) for my A7r3, given image quality is comparable… Features, like arca plate and accessories (bag…) are on Sigma side as well. Thanks!
With constant zooming out and in with a matte box at the front the extendibility can be extremely bad. Also the 200-600mm fast 200 to 600mm quarter twist can be crucial for birding and sports. Actually I would rather go for the Tamron 150-500mm as a secondary lens with another body but of course all of them seem to be very good and one should choose due to his/her needs.
Thank you ! Great review of the Sigma 100 to 600mm lens ! How would you compare this lens , to the Sigma 60 to 600mm lens ? Will you do a comparison of these two lenses ? Looking forward to using one of these lenses on APS-C and medium format cameras !
Another impressive lens from Sigma. I have the 100-400 for Nikon and it's pretty good. I'm very interested in the feature you mentioned for Sony where you could switch to APSC. Do all the Sony FF cameras have that? That's a handy feature.
You have me sold, thank you. Stay shooting 📸
Thank you for this very nice review. This lens completes the markets of affordable long zoom lenses as you mentioned.
I liked the R6, but skipped Canon, because their 100-500RF wasn't nearly as good as all this others and more expensive.
I may had kept it, if this Sigma would have been around at this time.
Thanks again, like your work.
Wonderful video and information there, Buddy! Thanks!
Like your review. I am using a A6600 and this is the best option. Will wait for your review of the tamron.
I just bought Contemporary version for my 5D IV havent tried it yet but the reviews are promising.
Hope it will work with some mirrorless body as well
On the comparison photo which is Sony image? As the image to the right is less sharp slightly softer. Thank for the review
Thanks for this cool review! I've been trying to decide between the Sigma and Tamron, and most of the reviews I've seen say this lens has a slower AF than the Tamron (and the Sony G). Did you felt it slower?
Love the review. Got mine ordered to be used with my Fx3. Yes FX3!
Great review! Hope a version is released for the Canon R mount. Would love to pair this with my R5!
I'll wait for the L mount version review, as these lenses work totally differently on the L and Sony systems
Oh man. This would be just the thing for my Sony a6600. Thanks for the review !
The big issue with 3rd party telephoto lenses is consistent autofocus, particularly when it comes to motion tracking. So if birds in flight are a priority I'd be a bit cautious. Maybe rent one first.
Interesting review and promising lens! One question - do you expect the same autofocus performance on L-mount as you got with a Sony-body?
Hi Leigh..
Thanks for this nice video .. as usual..
The combination of Sony 200-600 and Sony a7r4 was not good enough. What do you say about Sigma 150-600 and Sony a7r4 combination?
Also, I'm not sure if you have mentioned that or not, but how to compare the weight of the 2 lenses?
I recently purchased this lens to use on my Panny S5iiX. Do you have any suggestions on best body/lens stabilizations settings? Thanks!
You have John Berger's "Ways of Seeing!" +100 bonus points! 😀 That book packs so much into such a tiny form.
Love this!! I'm very disappointed with my sigma 100-400mm contemporary lens which I use on my a7riii. Is this a worthwhile upgrade? I just want better image quality when doing full moon shots! Thank you!
How do u customize the buttons? Would love to do what u do with APS! Can u update?
Great review. Have you tried this Sigma with Sony teleconverters? After watching this video I am thinking more on getting the Sigma over the Sony, but my plan is also to get the Sony 2x tele-converter
Im so confused... Idk which one to buy.. I mainly do wildlife videos.. Idk how's the video stabilization on sigma 150-600?.is it better than sony?
Great video Leigh. Looks like an attractive alternative to the Sony 200-600, which is a fantastic lens.
I really like the element coatings on sony g lenses, almost dont need a cpl. but for the price difference I could get the sigma and a decent color and still come out ahead. I love my sony 35, so sharp, I’m a sigma fan.
Thanks for a good review. I recently got an S5, and I've been eyeing the Sigma as my tele lens for it. I'd be doing both nature and astro with it, if I get it.
Also, I didn't know about the short near-focus limit - that was really good news, and made me more convinced to get this! Almost in the regions of macro, it seems.
Do you like animals? Follow us 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
Thank you very much for your review.
I love sigma lenses, and have owned multiple both for Canon and Sony , the quality is very good, and performance is excellent. My biggest problem has been the resale value. Once you buy a Sigma lens you might as well give it away. Meanwhile the Sony lenses tend to hold value a lot better.
But I do like the fact that the Sigma lens has has a much closer a minimum focusing distance.
one thing not mentioned is that for fast moving sports or wildlife you're limited on the number of frames per second that you can get with the Sigma compared to the Sony. 10 to 15 with the sigma and if we're talking A9 or A1 20-30 with the Sony. the zoom pull is also much longer on the sigma lens if you're not experienced this can affect getting your shot in time.
There's also only 15 gram weight difference. So carrying it around does not seem to be that much of an advantage
Hello, could you please enable subtitle (also automatic on the video?)
I'm interested in a telephoto lens, I'm in trouble between this and tamron (more oriented on tamron). Is the tamron af better/equal on this sigma? (there's a new firmware, 3.0). Does it works well on a7r3?
Thanks for that review. I had been awaiting the Tamron’s availability (it’s currently only on pre-order in the UK) and, whilst waiting, along comes the Sigma. The two seem to be extremely similar and, of course, cheaper than the Sony. Therefore the extra 100mm on the Sigma has me tempted. It, too, is on pre-order only, at present, otherwise I would have bought the Sigma. I am using a Sony a7r3.
What would be a good starter lens to upgrade from the kit lens that comes with the a7iii
Hi Leigh,
you say @ 10:50 that there are the Sony and Sigma 100-400 lenses for eMount and both has optional teleconverters. I know that there is one by Sony for Sony Lenses but i didnt know there is a Sigma tc for eMount?
As far as i know Tamron and Sigma are currently not allowed to build a tc for eMount. It would by really easy for Sigma to do it (the L mount Mirrorless pendant proofs it).
Please correct me if i am wrong or there is more you can tell me about it. Thx
Hi which one would you recommend Sigma 150-600 or Tamron 150-500 where I live Sigma is 150$ cheaper than Tamron but I hear sigma's af is slower than Tamron
Very detailed and friendly review, thank you very much !
Wonder if you have an opinion as to which way to go, comparing the 100-400 with the 2 x teleconverter to the 150-600, without the 2 x teleconverter.
So this is the more expensive S version lens. I wonder if they will also have the cheaper C version ?
I have the same question. I currently have the Contemporary version in the Canon ef-mount. It works great on my hand and bodies and also works well on my email two bodies with the sigma mc-11 converter. I would love to have a native amount version but don't feel the extra $500 is worth it to me for the sport version.
5:02 I don't know why I thought this was so funny. "My subject (The moon) was all but still."
I realized that SOMEONE was sure to say that both the Earth and moon are moving through space, hence the qualification! ;)
I've heard other reviews on these three lenses, nice job btw. I haven't preordered there sigma only because I haven't heard anyone mention if this new sigma can use both or either of the 1.4x or 2x teleconverters. Do you know if the sigma is compatible to?
to what level it is weather sealed? i had 100-400 , it was splash resistant, but not effective enough. i am scared to buy sigma for this issue. i stay in rainy & humid place lot. dont have dry cabinet. please suggest
Knowing the A7RIV has an issue with the 200-600 leading to inconsistent focus, did you happen to notice that in your testing of the sigma? The RIV is a great camera when it hits, but I know many people that have tried to combine with 200-600 and ran into issues.
I wonder how the usability of this lens would be with respect to the aperture / required ISO-settings / autofocus performance on a Leica CL (APS-C) ?
Very interesting review, thank you!
I have Sigma 60-600mm sports lens . Amazing one!
Leigh hopefilly this lens comes out in Z Mount one day.. I hear its great to 500mm and quite soft to 600 ??? What did you find
Great looking lens, but for the love can they make a 70-200 f2.8 art lens for e mount?
Ok, looks like I will be getting my first Sigma lens
I want this lens for S1R.
The close focusing distance sounds awesome.
Can you obtain a 1200mm full frame reach with the sigma on sony cameras as you can with the sony 200-600 / 2x teleconverter combination? This wasn't mentioned.
No William, there is only TC's for L-Mount not for E-Mount.
Yeah , what would the focal length be ? With a full frame or medium format camera ?
Leigh, great review. I am a Nikon user, so this lens won't work for me. I wish Nikon would release their Z mount specifications to Sigma and Tamron, so they can makes lens for the Z mount. Leigh, I've notice you been shooting a lot with Leica (sprinkle in Sony), is your Nikon gear gathering dust?
What do you thinking, what Autofocus is better, Tamron 150 500 or Sigma 150 600? I heart, the Tamron is faster. Thank you
Great review thanks I own 3 sony bodies and the 200-600mm I am interested 👍
I need this for my Nikon z camera
I wish Sigma could or would make such lenses for the Nikon Z mount
The Z seris has been out for 3 or 4 years, and no long lenses yet!
Hi Leigh, I read a news text about this lens and it said that the lens has a choice to zoom either by rotating or pushing. Is this true? Thanks a lot in advance! KR Ralf
Would love to see it for Canon; R5 and 100-500 great lens so far…
I want that for the Z-Mount (D*mn Nikon, I need Tele-Lenses!)
If you want many 3rd party lenses options shouldn't haven't gone with Nikon. They specifically try to prevent 3rd party makers. So 3rd parties have to reverse engineer the autofocus.
That was an excellent and well detailed review. I'm torn between the Sigma and Sony for my Sony a7 ii. But after this, definitely swaying towards the Sigma. It would mainly be used for nature and airshows. Thanks again.
Hey, did you get it?
How good it is?
@@juandyaristy2000 Sadly, with the way things are at present, costs continuing to rise, I had to put the money saved for this towards the household bills. But I will get this lens at some point.....I hope.
I’m curious how it works for sports and bif?
Is the tripod arm standard or do you have to pay an extra $200 like you do with the 100 400
im really wanting to buy this for my a6400
Great review! Thank you.
Thank you for your review. I have a A7R4 body, and was thinking of getting the Sony 100-400 GM telephoto, and use my crop function to get to 600 mm, I wonder whether doing this on a "GM" lens will still produce a "sharper" pic then FF 600 mm with the Sigma? The advantages are more compact with the 100-400, still better image quality because it is a GM level lens. Any thoughts on this comparison?
@@michaelbuddy its 950 for the sigma 100 400, $500 less
One correction: Sigma 100-400 will not work with teleconverter on Sony body.
Thanks for the review. I’m keen to watch your Tamron assessment..
Sony Xperia 1 Mark || is the winner of the camera business because he uses the best Zeiss lenses at the moment
Hmmm....wondering what Sigma and Tamron will do now. Their lenses dont give you 30fps on the A1. Not good.
How is it for sports?
What about focusing speed and tracking between the two? I would imagine, like normal, the Sony is better at both.
Seems good for my A6400; however it will depend upon their India price. Price advantage of Sigma lenses have been very small in India in comparison to Sony OEM lense. Sony really provides a competitive price in India.
The Sigma is a good lens, but the auto focus on the Sony is fantastic!
Gonna put this in my cart
