I was lucky enough to test this lens few weeks back, and I too would prefer this over the 150-600mm.

I've been using this lens for a month. Very impressed with the sharpness at 600 hand held. I had a tamron 150-600. The sigma 60-600 is heavier, but image quality is much better. I traded the tamron in for this lens and am pleased with results.

I don't know if this applies to the 60-600 mm, but I have a 150-600 mm Sports and actually, it is possible to zoom in or out just by pulling or pushing the lens hood (also recommended by Sigma). This is much better than turning the zoom ring.

It's amazing how sharp the lens is at 600mm. Many zooms work the other way, they get less sharp the more you zoom in, but Sigma here did a great job in delivering the best quality at the focal length most people will be using this lens at, 600mm (you're never too close to the subject when shooting wildlife). Great job Sigma! I hope the AF is on par with the image quality

In answer to your question, I sold my Sigma 150-600 Sport and purchased the 60-600 Sigma Sport in early November and haven't regretted it for an instant. It's interesting that you can get sharp images at 600mm , handheld, whilst Dustin Abbott complains that he can't get sharp images at 600mm , even when using a tripod.I use the 60mm setting for headshots and landscapes and actually find that it works extremely well given those restrictions .In a funny co-incidence , I'm actually going to take my lens to Australia Zoo tomorrow on Australia Day and will be sure to get some nice shots of young Robert Irwin, even though he's a Canon shooter :-) .

I got a 150-600 sport by accident, thought it was a contemporary 2 months ago and wondered why it feels like I have been working out at a gym! Two months in and I can probably shoot for 20 minutes without arm shake and operate the Zoom. To Zoom out point camera down, Zoom in point upwards seems to help a great deal. Have to say it seems to lack the fringing at 150 you seemed to get at 60. I think this lens really comes into its own at 300 - 600mm and gives really nice background blurring (bokeh) on nature shots and wild life shots, with subject being sharp. I live in Central Australia, very hot with dust storms so the superior build and weather sealing is probably a good idea. I shoot hand held and the image stabilisation even at 600mm has not let me down. Also slipped the lens mount handle on top and found hanging the camera off one hand and operating with the other seemed to enable better use than having the handle under the camera. All in all the 150mm difference means you have to place yourself with fore thought not being able to rely on the 60mm which is not hard in a wide open county. The image quality is not the really the issue here it's definitely weight, some people will loose shots and find moving the 150-600mm a pain in the neck and if I drop it I reckon it would rip the lens mount off the Canon Mk III I use off. If you can handle the weight the 150 won't let you down.

@ Jared: For the stiff zoom, check the lens manual. If it's like the Sigma 150-600mm Sport, it's certified you can grab the front element and push/ pull to zoom.
And the shape of the front element is great for that.

It would be nice to be able to zoom back all the way to 60, but the extra weight of the lens (4.5 pounds vs 6 pounds) would be a considerable problem, especially if the image quality is degraded at 60.

Thanks so much Jared for doing this review. Frankly every review I've seen of this lens, even those that were lukewarm, are showing sample images that I personally like better than those from the 150-600 lenses. I've even heard people comparing it favorably to the Canon 100-400 L II in that focal range, which is really saying something. Like you said, for those really wanting 600mm (or even further equivalent on APS-C) , are pleased with the IQ, can live with the slower aperture and DON'T want to drop like $12 grand...it makes allot of sense. The built in arca swiss plate and lighter construction is much welcomed as well.

I feel like some people might be turned away from this lens because of the way so many people doing video's about it talk about the weight, like "If you don't have arms like mine" talk. When I was 62 years old, 165 lbs. three years ago, I hiked 11 1/2 miles in the Great Smoky Mountains NP with this lens on a D500 along with my backpack with my D850 and 2 wide angle lenses, filters, tripod, other accessories and snacks & water. By "fringing" you mean chromatic aberration? Usually in optics fringing is used to refer to band like interference patterns or when there is some aliasing effects for example when you try to photograph a curtain or a screen and the size of the projected pixels are very close to those of the sensor.

I'm really curious if someone can answer this for me. I will try to word this as best as possible:
How does the 60-600 perform, just at 150-600?
I'm debating on the 150-600Sport or the 60-600Sport. If these lenses are equivalent from 150-600, then Hallelujah, the 60-149 range is a nice bonus. However, if the 150-600Sport is the better performer, I'll forego the extra range for the sharpest of the 2.
    Thoughts?

on APS-C Canon bodies the Sigma "C" 150-600mm = 240-960mm, it's Pin sharp both ends and lighter than 60-600mm. Weather sealing, pointless as rain=clouds=low light, V bad for slow zooms as high ISO=loss of sharpness usually and bad cropped images, add that to most wildlife hides when its raining so why pay for weather sealing. I went for Sigma f4 24-105 "A", Sigma 150-600mm "C" plus 1.4x T.C. My legs fill in for the missing 100+mm. Other options spend tens of thousands on long focal length standard lenses which are faster and weather sealed and still end up cropping. My most bang for bucks was all pin sharp Sigma; 10-20mm f3.5 EX, 50mm f1.4 "A", 105mm f2.8 Macro EX (best out there), 24-105mm f4 "A", 150-600mm "C". I have the latest Tamron 70-300mm f/4-5.6 VC USD which has to be the worst lens I have ever used, slow, 200mm+ out of focus blurred images, PANTS!!!

No one knew but the Sigma 60-600mm Sport is a "Parfocal" lens this allows one to zoom in to focus, then zoom back out to compose an image. This is sort of operation is absolutely crucial for camera operators, for whom manipulating focus manually while zooming at the same time would be almost impossible. Photographers almost never need this kind of functionality, so manufacturers make varifocal lenses, which are far cheaper to construct. But most photographers are shooting both photography and video nowadays so this Sigma 60-600mm is a steal Cine lens at this price point. Also no other Super Tele can come as close to focusing at 600mm.

Color fringing on OOF elements is common. You had to zoom WAY in to see it. That’s how many lenses work, although it can be corrected with additional lens elements. That fringing can also be removed in post. For me, it is not a non-starter to have such minor fringing in the OOF back ground because I can remove it post.
I would not want carry that around all day. Give me a monopod. The lock switch on the 150-600 Contemporary and Sport lenses let you lock it every 100mm, from 150, 200, 300, 400, 500, and 600. Does the lock switch on this lens work the same way across the entire zoom range?

    Hey Jared,
I bought one of these and within 30 minutes the Auto Focus crapped out. I had to return it but I have to say the $2K for me would have been worth it. I miss it so much even though I only held it for about an hour. When contacting the vendor they had never heard of the problem and called it a fluke but over time I found 3 instances on B&H reviews that had the same problem. For whatever reason the AF just died. I used it on my Canon 80d and the pics were amazing. Just felt I should warn folks if they are on the fence. I so wish I could bring myself to buy it over but I am scared to take a $2K chance. Since your video have you or anyone else run into this? Thanks Tom

The good news is that Sigma claims to have fixed the autofocus problem with a firmware update. The bad news is that you can't install it with their dock, and have to have done by a "qualified repairer". Newer samples of the lenses (as of about the 2nd week of June, 2019) have the newer firmware.

This lens and the 150-600 Sport both have very stiff zoom rings as you said. It does get slightly but not a lot better over time. But Sigma built these to also be zoomable using a simple push/pull and they are much easier to zoom that way. I actually use the lens hood knob to give me more leverage to accomplish that.

    • @sarahellis6947

Is the 150-600 image quality just as good?

    • @ejpeiker
      @ejpeiker 2 года назад

@@sarahellis6947 Actually a bit better. Either lens will need an AF Fine tune (Nikon) or lens microadjust (Canon) to get the most out of it and it is best done with the Sigma dock - a pretty laborious process for a super zoom like this to get it totally dialed in to your camera body. Of course if you are going to use this on a mirrorless camera with an adapter than you do not need to calibrate it due to the way AF is done by a mirrorless camera compared to a traditional DSLR.

  • @2losersPROD

Hey Jared, a bit late on a comment but for handheld this lens is awesome to use the kind of shotgun pump style of zooming when you grab the lens just below the hood and just bring it closer or further (you even gave a smooth grove for that to hold it nicer - just like the 150-600)

I know this is years after the video was posted, but I'm hoping to get an answer anyway. I have a chance to get this used in the $1200 range. Is that worth it over the RF 100-500, which is more than twice as much? I already have the R6 and the EF-RF adapter. I'm not sure if they autofocus can keep up with erratic movement as well as native RF glass can. Thanks!

I'd like to propose an additional use case - I recorded a series of (amateur choral) concerts (with a pickup pro orchestraas) last june from the back of the hall. Usually, one of the members, whose day job was doing documentaries videos would shoot one of the concerts, but she was need to sing all 3 this time. I'm the audio recording guy and had gotten a panasonic S1, which is a full frame mirrorless camera which shoots decent video. It is not unusual for dedicated camcorders to have a 20x ratio of widest to tightest focal length, but just about impossible to find a full-frame lenses with that much. 60mm was almost but not quite wide enough to capture the entire width of the stage from the back of the hall, but 600mm was terrific for zooming in on the vocal soloists from the back of the hall. I gave the the footage to the aforementioned singer/videographer who will decide whether any of it should be publicly posted. If she OK's it, I'll post the link here. For definitiveness, it was the Brahms requiem, as sung by the Berkeley (CA) Community Chorus & Orchestra, in the recital hall on the UC Berkeley Campus.

I paid $1899 CDN back in 2012 and bought the Sigma 50-500mm to go with my Canon 5D Mark ii. I still have it and it takes amazing pics. I have notice lately, that sometimes when I try and autofocus on something, it moves back and forth. Not sure how I can fix that.

I bought the Contemporary and regretted not getting the Sport on my 5D Mark IV, but at the time it was all I could afford. A year later I bought the Sport version with the intention of selling the Contemporary. Glad I did not sell my Contemporary, because I sold my Sport version, only lost $50. The Sport version is awesome , great lens but I could not see any difference. The C is a bit faster focus on the Mark IV and lighter. Either one of these lens are sharp and excellent quality.

I am waiing for the L-Mount version of this lens with maybe with a few tweaks alongside the 70-200mm f/2.8 & f/4, maybe a lighter version considering it's for mirrorless system. Good range of Tele on L-Mount Alliance will boost it's capabilities even more as opposed to using MC-21 Adapter and be limited with AF-S only.
